So I used to go to this summer camp when I was a kid, and they had a 3rd Strike arcade machine. And at the end of the year in a kind of celebration in the gymnasium they would hand out certificates like participation trophies highlighting an aspect of each kid. So they'd have the best stickball player, kick ball, dodge ball etc. but they also have ones for kids that weren't so athletic and I played SO MUCH Street Fighter 3 that two years in a row I got a certificate that said "Street Fighter Champion" and of course you know I absolutely mained Alex. Thought I'd share thanks Matt!
Plus if they included their Third Strike bgm (first, second, and final round) That would make it even better The SF6 soundtrack is missing that impact this game had. It tries, but meh
I think Alex's ending would have been way cooler if Ryu wasn't in sf3. This legendary encounter of the main character of III finding and fighting the hero of sfII and finding himself lacking.
I remember I was going through arcade mode for the millionth time after school in 3S and Gill pulled out wings of the seraph for the first time and when he rose to the sky I was like "what the..." And then the wings came out and I screamed so loud... Fun times man...
SFIII is a game I am not good at but have come to love its aesthetics and vibes. Ignored it at first, then playing the hell out of Capcom vs SNK 2 with my friend back in the day, gave it a second chance and liked it on the ps2 collection, and now just grooving on the vibes of the "dreamcast era" of late 90s and early 2000s stuff.
Agreed about the stages, the biggest omission imo is Necro's train stage. I absolutely love that stage, and the horror theme, and it is frustrating it's only in a game nobody plays.
I feel that this games presentation reflects the time it was made in, just how SF6 (I think) tries to emulate today's society. Speaking of Anniversary collections, I wish they included the music from the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection in this updated version.
I'd like to see Necro come back; when Street Fighter III first came out, I was working in a mall. I played it on all my breaks, and Necro was my main. I was the first in my arcade to clear the game, and there were a couple other regular folks who were a lot of fun to play against. Tons of memories with all flavours of this game, but while I'll agree 3rd Strike is the best to play, the OG holds the most nostalgia for me.
I first played this on the Anniversary Collection on the PS2. I didn't even know about the legendary EVO moment until later. A great Street Fighter game overall.
I'll always have a soft spot for old school sprites. Sometimes they just work better, like Alex looks great in 3S, but the design and stance doesn't translate over to a 3D model.
Same. There is something about the precision, flow of movement, and 🎵🎶 This is what SF has been missing for sometime. KOF XIII. Garou. Guilty Gear (cough hairball) Versus what we have now 🤔 No stupid dlc, no season pass, a full roster, a finished game
I feel werid about my fighting history because I remember street fighter from all the video game magazines and their guides but I swear all my local arcades had either MK or Virtua Fighter (VF Kids being one I remember the most because I played it after "graduating" to faster go-carts then promptly crashing into a wall because my small brain didn't comprehend breaking when in a race). So I ended up bloody knee-deep and playing VF kids in an arcade in Wisconsin growing up. SF just was something I read about but never played.
I’ve played 3rd Strike Street Fighter III once on Street Fighter Anniversary collection.Luv the music and the characters are cool..would to play this again in the 30th anniversary collection!
What makes Alex in III different than V, is that the ENTIRE GAME'S HIT REACTION SYSTEM responds to him. There's moves that turn the opponent back-facing, and variations of his stuff that focus on that aspect that, at least to me, feels like it's missing *entirely* from V, or is just really badly implemented at best. An Alex in SF3 with momentum has the ability to maintain and control that momentum, and it's just not there in the other two games.
My favorite fighter is garou but this is prolly 2nd. Garou, project justice this, mvc2 and cvs2 are the top 5. 3rd strike is just pure fighting game perfection.
As someone who remembers the era when this was shit upon, I’m glad it’s been vindicated and gets love now. I remember it every time someone complains about the latest game in the series.
Seems to happen with every fandom. If a thing released isn't looked upon very well for whatever reason, by the time a newer thing is released, the previous thing is looked upon better upon hindsight and in comparison. I think in this instance during this era, we were blinded by the obsession of the then-new era of 3D gaming... Best example of this was a videogame magazine snippet comparing two then-new Castlevania games ridiculing SotN compared to 64's cutting-edge 3D graphics.
@@SorcererLance the 2D/3D issue was definitely a thing, but more important was how different Street Fighter III was from Alpha or II. Most of the new cast seemed uninspired copies of characters from II and the hip hop music was an unusual choice. But now the music is considered one of the best things in the game, and Alex, Sean, Oro, Makoto, and Elena are some people’s favorite characters in the series. People just got over it.
It's cool scene Matt mcmuscles play the famous Street Fighter 3 third strike and as one of my favorite characters Alex. I do agree with you though that if Alex was like a playable character in Street Fighter 4, I think he could have got more love for that then in Street Fighter 5, which don't get me wrong, I thought he was okay especially with his move style but his design didn't fit the mold for him. I'm hoping that one day that they'll put them in Street Fighter 6 with a more updated version of himself. But if you wants to play some good competition then you should take on Maximilian Dood or Justin Wong in online battle.
I missed playing SF3 the first time round somehow as a young boy but i was super into Alpha 3 and EX plus Alpha haha. Soundtrack for this game is Goated though, I really need to play more
While Makoto's not a shoto in the SF terminology sense of the word, her Rindokan is technically much closer to actual Shotokan in style than the Ansatsuken that the "shotos" use.
Part of the reason i want Online Edition to be ported to PC is because i play Necro on the side and his and Twelve's theme's remix is like a thousand times more groovy than the original.
It is very strange to see that in the series "What Happened" the game tends to suck, but it is not true for Street fighter 3. Third Strike is the best fighting game ever made but it was still a disaster.
Street Fighter 3 didn't do well at first because it was a new cast of characters that people weren't used to. But as they added Ryu, Ken, Akuma & Chun-Li people gave it a chance
A little tempted to redownload but man I suck. The controls feel different than when I played 4 on 3DS. And I would look forward to more SF3 or SF content overall.
To this day, I still pick the fighter with the time of day that I personally would like to fight 😂, I don't care who it is, I'm not getting up at 630am to throw hands
Say Matt, how about a fan-game with SF3 characters only. Those guys should get the Alpha treatment and hold their own spin-off series away from the main SF line.
I liked 2nd Impact better. Didn't like the change in voices and especially the announcer. Plus as somebody else mentioned the backgrounds are a lot blander in 3rd strike
The only thing I dont like about this game is that they didnt do a great job with the stages. The stages are kinda bland and lifeless and some characters share them. Everything else is top shelf.

My favorite fighter of all-time just barely after MVC2
So fucking good, the animations still hold up beautifully.
Capcom animation is so darn good

Personally, I’d like to see Remy and Sean with Q as a close third. Sean could get a rework to incorporate BJJ with Shotokan.
Really cool to see fellow Alex fans, guys never been top tier or considered iconic but he's always gonna be my main n anything he's in
The music in 3rd Strike slaps hard
Yes, yes it does. Still does 20+ years later
Akuma's theme, Killing Moon, is the hotness
that shit goes so hard

One of the best fighting games, 2D or 3D of all time. Wasn't appreciated when it released but history has vindicated it
Really a letdown how the tag team fight was teased in SFV. Alex and Laura vs Zangief and R Minka a missed opportunity to showcase more of that match.
They better add Sean in SF6!!!!!
