  • A few weeks ago, Roces rider Ilia Savosin released a promo video for his new signature "Heat" skate. However, this video has since gone viral, gaining praise and recognition well beyond the inline skating community. With over 111,000 views already and a unique story-driven approach, many have been calling this video a contender for "Video of the Year" . . . but is it really a masterpiece?
In today's video, we analyze the hidden meaning of Ilia Savosin's video and how the thematic significance, self-referentiality, and visual symbolism come together to create a truly artistic piece of rollerblading media. Don't be fooled, this video is much deeper than most people realize!
    Thanks for watching Roll Minnesota!

I felt like the ping pong metaphor was more directed toward the repetitiveness of the Traditional Skate Edit, where we see clip after clip after clip of the same moves done for years on end. The performative aspect of the Professional Skater drives you into this Path of Least Expression. Meanwhile, the journey of getting to that point of a career is more often filled with joy and expressiveness. It is about exploring and experimenting with new skills, new obstacles and new environments. The journey is yours to be had, but once you are in front of an audience and there are expectations to be had from them, you're encouraged to be boring.
On top of that, I thought the clown costume was a bit of a subversive (or maybe more of a direct post-modern interpretation) element to the story. Clowns are meant to be happy performers, but the happiness does not come from the performance. Without the drive of a personal interest in satisfying your own need for joy, you lose the heart of what makes a joyous performance - having fun. By demonstrating misery in his performance and joy in his personal journey, he reads as the opposite of a clown. He is effectively a failure at being a clown, and this is what I interpret the meaning of the video to be. By focusing on the external validation of judges who bring us no joy in their approval or disapproval, we fail to be what we want to be. 🤡

Another symbolic fact is that behind the wheel of the car that accelerates Ilya to jump onto the truck is a pro rider razors in the past (Spartak Alemasov)

Well analysed! I also liked the self-referentially of talent/uniqueness vs. being (perceived as) "just a clown" and the talent show being called "kringe" - it shows his awareness of how he is ambivalently perceived within the rollerblading community or a wider general public. After watching that promo you undeniably can't call him "just a clown". It's too clever and self-referential and his skating is just too good. It's really refreshing that he didn't just make a normal promo (not his style anyway) or didn't play out "just" the clown card as on IG or his first promo (which is great as well but lacks the self-referential twists apart from playing with Russian clichées).
PS: "popping" the balloon (or actually not) could just be a reference to Kings IT (or rather the movie version) and the evil clown. He doesn't actually pop it and remains harmless and playful. More of a jester and sad clown.

I really hope Blading can become really mainstream. I think it's really intimidating for newer people to get into it. I still can't jump that high, and I've been skating for a little bit, when I was learning to skateboard it took me a couple weeks to learn to ollie.

I think the gist of the video is even though he and stunt inliners are awesome at skating and but a "freakish clown" to the general public, he doesn't care, he just wanna have fun but in his heart he is just as ordinary as everybody.

For me, the plunge into the river signifies, "freakish clowns" aspires to plunge into a relationship too and can be an easy catch because they seek company too.

He didn't really prick the balloon of the little girl and she didn't appear to be frightened because skaters really watch out for every obstacle specially children.

I think your right in the most, but for me this video is about going against the mainstream, being good, making different things - but the grow never comes.. compared to sport "stars" this is low budget to do, but demands so much compared to other sports - go mainstream, earn big, go against the "Stream" keep it low and live life happy as u are, whatever u pick ur still a clown.

2:55 isnt that a bio540? He rotated over the shoulder and never was complete upside down. We used to call that bio540 in the 90's.

c'mon man that balloon scene is a direct reference to IT movie. this clip has a lot of references. like the dancing steps at the beging referecing the joker..... the audio transition in the water is a high cut eq, to really create release and build up tension. its a very common technique used in electronic music / film score but it fits amazing on the video

Very nice. Growing up rollerblading the group I skated with were all kinda considered the clowns of extreme sports. Especially when learning how to skate with style the road up to that point can look a bit goofy.

It's sad, because I think just learning the basics is the hardest of the four, with BMX, Skateboarding, scootering, Blading. I can bunny hope on BMX, I can ollie on a Skateboard, and I can do a lot on a scooter, but I still barely can just do a two inch jump on skates.
