    I had to chuckle 🤭 at your argument with your X11 instructor. Those of us who are real time pilots seem to all have problems flying “their way “ rather than the way we were taught and have always practiced the procedures at hand.Learning to fly their pattern drove me nuts 🥜 and I went back to flying my way (the proper way) as soon as I completed each segment.

      Being totally new (1hr so far ) agree that the landing tutorial is cruel, Also find the plane has a really strong desire to turn left and would like to see that mentioned in your video and how to counter that.

      @@PWingert1966 That turn is actually a real-world consequence of the non-compensated torque produced by single-engine aircraft. Flying something like a Cessna actually requires some continued rudder input to counter the torque forces of the engine.
      This is also why the rotors or turbines on multi-engine aircraft rotate in alternate directions. The torque forces are neutralized.

      Over 3 years later and the X-Plane flight school tutorials have not been improved or enhanced in ANY way. As a new player I think Jeff was completely reasonable in criticism and not "very hostile" at all. "lol" They are poor in just about every way.

      Jeff Favignano Hey nice video. To play the game and fly the planes do you have to have a joystick and that stuff or can you use your keyboard to fly cause I just got the beta today and I have no joystick. And I was wondering if could use the keyboard to fly

    • @JacksonLaRue
      @JacksonLaRue 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is technically possible to fly using only a keyboard and mouse, but 99.9% of simers use some sort of aux controls. This is because it's so much easier to control the plane and much more relaistic. Grab yourself a basic usb joystick and have fun!

  • @fordstar352
    @fordstar352 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    This was both an excellent vid and a frustrating one. Excellent commentary for the most part. Very good teacher. However I would like to give some feedback. Youre running through the tutorials for the game. I dont know how many times you had to advertise that you have had experience, and how wrong the sim was compared to real life. Tone it down a little and remember your audience. Sign out with a summary if you need to.

      From experience people who constantly tell you how much they know don’t really know much at all. I have been using xplane for ages but wanted to see if this would make me learn anything I missed. The guy has a thing for saying he knows stuff, but I’ve been on planes like this one in the real world many times as a passenger and never heard a pilot say stuff like that... they just fly the plane, if that would just explain stuff.

  • @MrD
    @MrD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for that, I was constantly messing up the landing tutorial, usually coming in too low and "landing" short of the runway. It would be better if, like you explained, they gave you air speeds to aim for to intersect the glide slope and then follow it down. There just isn't enough detail in the tutorials.

  • @tsebomoloi3410

    Jeff, be careful of your airspeed. So typically we put flaps 1 on downwind just before base, flaps 2 on base flaps 3 on final approach.

  • @jacklawrie2037
    @jacklawrie2037 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion for single engine GA aircraft, it's best to overshoot the glide slope to give ample distance in case of an engine out. There is plenty of runway length, so it's not really much of an issue if you overshoot the landing markers. However, your experience flying a lot of heavy aircraft has probably encouraged slope approaches, which by all means is correct but unnecessary for smaller aircraft.

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes that is true, depends on how you want to train for landings. We always shot approaches on the 3.0 degree path probably to keep that in our heads for moving to IFR and bigger airplanes.

    I have a lot of experience with tail draggers under my belt. First of, its not over powered. Its not a heavy aircraft and iy has a big engine for the size so of course youll have more power output.

    • @Ayeshteni
      @Ayeshteni 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm no expert (and I've never flown a plane), but a 'big engine for the size' on a plane that's 'not a heavy plane' that'll 'have more power output' is my definition of 'over-powered'.

    • @koshums8603
      @koshums8603 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering the same thing, but I found out what they were. They're called VASI lights, and they are the 2 lights on the green square of grass to the left of the runway. If you look closely the furthest one (the top one) turns pink-ish at around 14:40, which I believe is the 'red over white' he's talking about.

    • @cxzmyc
      @cxzmyc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RandeepB adding onto what Koshums said, white means you are too high for the approach and red means you are too low for the approach.

    Is there a basic explanation as to why the plane wants to turn left while on the runway when trying to take off?

    • @bulwinkle
      @bulwinkle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gamerx9191 Yes, the engine and prop are effectively a huge gyroscope and if you've ever played with one you'll know that they resist any change so in an aircraft starting to roll you experience that resistance as a push to the left. If the engine turned the prop in the opposite direction you'd feel a push to the right.

    • @NivekX602

      @charlesgrieves7847 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this article explains it pretty well. www.boldmethod.com/learn-to-fly/aerodynamics/4-left-turning-tendencies/

    • @jamesoren7238
      @jamesoren7238 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That great article explains it a lot better, this is just the way my instructor explained torque to me, and I found the analogy helped a lot: It's the electric drill. You pick up the drill and squeeze the trigger - the drill bit spins freely. Then you mark your spot and press the drill against the wall and squeeze the trigger again. This time the drill tries to twist your hand because the drill bit is encountering resistance from the wall. That's what's happening to the plane - the blades are pushing air out of the way, that resistance acts as a force to roll the plane in the opposite direction (counter clockwise from the pilot's view). Adding more throttle is like pushing the drill deeper - there's more resistance, so the opposing force tries to roll your plane harder.
      Don't get too caught in the fine print, it's just to help visualize what's happening. It helped me get used to the practicality of it when flying rather than just "learning it". :)

    Good vid Jeff, Subbed just for X-plane due to me training for my commercial pilots license. Few questions though. What the standard circuit height? Here in Australia is 1000ft. Also is the standard circuit pattern a right hand circuit? Here it's a left hand circuit with the turn starting at 45 degrees to the RW for downwind and base.
    Thanks for the content.

      I have always used 1000 AGL so if the field elevation is 532 ft we would shoot for 1500. I would use 1100 as the safety altitude before starting the crosswind of the the pattern.

    Hey Jeff, interesting look...well maybe XPlane 11 being in Beta they will get the feedback to tweak the flight school...when you were getting your Pvt ticket did your CFI teach you 1000 feet AGL for pattern or the 750 for recip & 1000 for turbine? (granted PAJN may have different Altitudes for local conditions but...) If it was me in the right seat I'd brief the objective PRIOR to activating the lesson (IAS on Climb-out, target altitude & power setting(s) so the student who is drinking from the fire-hose has a clue in case they miss a text box...too bad the virtual CFI doesn't have a "Say Again" key to display last text box...just my 2 cents

    I asked the same question on their forums and the say it isn't possible unless you are familiar with planemaker and placing 3D objects in the cockpit. Is this is what you did and is it possible to distribute this to tohers?

    My problem with your instruction style is you've assumed a bunch of knowledge, (which the game did not) so ailerons, and flaps were mentioned, but you didn't tell us how to do it, which differs from the first video. You also mention the glide slope but don't show us how to identify it.

    Your so right, My Dad lost oil pressure flying pattern for landing at Long Beach Int. if he'd done what they asked for, in thje tutor, he'dof never made touch down on the field. When I flew we always flew 1500 feet paterns and you turned from downwind much sooner. I once had a brake lock up flying into orange county it took fast reactions to keep it on the runway and turn off at a taxiway, my sister was riding with me at the time we came very close to doing a ground loop. but I added full power and full right rudder. a long with right brake control, to slow down the turn to the left. it worked out perfectly. on final the tower asked if I could safely speed up the landing because we had a twin coming in behind us.. if I'd of known the brake was going to lock up, I'd of said no.. oh well we made it. My Dad lost the 170 in the same type of accident I had, only the plane swerved to the right and he caught a landing light with the right wheel which tore it off the plane the insurance called it a total and replaced it with a newer 170 lucky pop. It seems the Government sent out a flier warning that a spring could come loose in the brake assembly and cause the wheel to lock up, He did what the flier said and had it checked off by a mechanic but later on that is exactly what killed the plane.

      No but I can no longer pass the health exam, so it's pretty much moot, I still have my lis but I can no longer fly. and my dad has sinced passed away. After the landing at Long Beach, he got the engine fixed and sold the plane, he was in his late 70's and it was time to stop. My dad flew in the Navy during WW2 and become an instructor for them, He taught Multi Engine Bomber Flight. He alway complained about how I flew, but at least I never wrecked the plane, was mostly luck I didn't, I did met several actors once, I was out flying with some friends when we came across a flim crew on a dry lake, The 170 is perfect for those types of landing, I circled about and made a landing from the far side and taxied over to them. it was a lot of fun. I used to love flying into Catalina Airport it was a trickies landing it was.

    Pitch trim set for take off? What's that?

  • @BlakeBigfoot
    @BlakeBigfoot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a 172 "should" do on takeoff is 74 kts. I have no idea where you're getting 80 from...

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am getting 80 from flight school

    • @BlakeBigfoot
      @BlakeBigfoot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Favignano All teachers teach it differently. I seem to remember 64/65 from my training..and technically, 65 is Vx, so you would use that in most normal climbouts. That being said, Vy ranges from about 69 to 79 kts, depending upon altitude, so if you're following that number, 74 would be the median.

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, we would use Vy when we were aiming for it but normal takeoff was always 80 knots on departure. Same when I flew the 182T.

    The most common thing I have heard from real pilots, priveate/commercial, etc are you wouldn't do this in case of failure. For all Flight Sims. Haha

    Why does it actually turn left when you apply the throttle?

    • @oskupelaaop8936
      @oskupelaaop8936 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremiah Jefferson Bunyan because the propeller is rotating to the left.

      Jeremiah Jefferson Bunyan It's called P-Factor It has to do with the angle of the propeller blade.

    When your downwind you make your turn to base leg when your 45 degrees to the runway, when do you turn to final ? is there a gauge for that?

    • @bruiserbrown9258
      @bruiserbrown9258 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you turn to final just before you cross the runway. picture the centerline of the runway going on infinitely, you want to turn final at a point where you won't over shoot or under shoot that line, it's really just a visual thing, no real gauge for it

  • @steve210sa

    You complain ALOT about the flight pattern, the altitude or the way they instruct you with their messages. You were distracted by the scenery when the message popped up telling you to climb to 1100ft.
