      becky, so right. and sadly so many doing that rudeness are some of the home soap makers i find. So many think everything has to be done their way or the way a company is training them to think that is the only way. OR they think one person only invented something new when in fact many of these things been done years and years that way or another way and worked long before they came along. lol and instead of allowing people to just share and enjoy, they find it hard not to be rude, trying to prove they know more. although safety is important of course, some people are just sharing what they do, not performing a college degree. Some can be just too rude and fussy. Their arrogance gets on my nerves sometimes.

    I just wanted to come back to say thank you for the encouragement you gave me, and for making soaping seem doable and practical. I will always appreciate the gift you gave a complete stranger you didn't even know existed. May God bless you always! ❤

    You can get lye cheap cheap cheap. Boil wood/ charcoal ashes with as little water as possible, strain it, and set it in the sun or keep it boiling until all the water evaporates. What's left is lye. It might be stronger than food grade, but the scent mixes with others well.

    Hi there! Just made my first batch of soap. It turned out amazing. I am never buying soap again. I used crisco instead of lard (it is more affordable for me) the only thing that happened with my soap, as I was cutting it, little bits would break off the edges. I guess it is because I used crisco... but I love love it! I also added a little of lemon scent. Thank you so much for teaching your secrets. Much love from Guatemala!

    Density and weight are 2 different things. Density is how close together things are smooshed. Weight is how much stuff there is. That's why when you weigh the lard it doesn't matter if it's solid or liquid.
    If you have 10 ounces of solid lard that means it's a tighter little ball of stuff.
    That same exact 10 ounces of lard melted hasn't gotten lighter, it just spread out like a fat cat on a sofa.

    • @untitled565

    The beauty of not adding "scents" and "oils" and nonsense to lye soap is the purity of it. Lye soap helps with poison ivy itch, etc. My husband works out in the sun all day and breaks out around his neck every year when he is in it too much. We normally purchase lye soap as he found out as a kid it was the only thing that would get rid of it. (I am not sure why and I am not trying to argue the chemistry, it just does) I wouldn't consider oils and perfumes in this soap. Just ordered all the stuff to make this myself since we do buy it all the time. Thanks Becky!

    Becky, your lifestyle is to be admired your and videos are quite enjoyable. I am glad I found you on youtube. FYI: Use of a lye calculator (google it) is useful in soapmaking and most soapers recommend cold process soap cure four to six weeks, just to be safe. I learned this from Soaping 101. I like to make soap too.

      +rksu747 so its not dangerous ?

    • @ronanbauer9954
      @ronanbauer9954 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strong bases can be just as dangerous as strong acids - ammonia is an example of a toxic base. One should not touch either lye or ammonia with bare skin, nor breathe too much of the vapours.

    • @rksu747
      @rksu747 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it is dangerous. You don't want to inhale fumes, get it in your eyes or on your bare skin. People tend to instantly recognize that acids can be dangerous, but the same is true of bases. When working with these materials, you want to be in a well ventilated space, wear goggles, make sure you are fully clothed and wear gloves. If you were working in a lab, these would be the most basic safety precautions.

    Rinse with water not vinegar.

    • @frozentootsiepop
      @frozentootsiepop 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The vinegar pH neutralized the lye pH. You would definitely want to use vinegar. She doesn't have vinegar to "rinse" but to chemically neutralize the lye burning the skin.

    Hi Becky, just found you. Love this video on homemade soap. I made homemade soap and people still ask me for it as gifts. As people said Lye is base and will burn. Vinegar is the acid. Enough said. I love how you made them look nicer with the potato peeler. Did you know you can take those shavings and put them in a dispenser jar with water .. leave it long enough with shaking that it breaks down and you have soap for hand washing. Also they stress never use the immersion blender for cooking after you make soap with it. I have one for cooking cause it works really well with soups that are like cream soup .. like pumpkin or squash for instance. In fact they say in soap making that you never use any equipment used for soap for anything you put in your mouth. LOL except soap. My mom had a soap bar she used to try to keep us clean mouthed.. no cursing. LOL. Thank you for your helpful informative videos. At 58 I am hesitant to embark on this for all the years it takes but I may be doing so eventually.

    Lye is not an acid!!! Lard is an acid lye is a base, they oxydise-reduce at somewhat high temperature an saponify... thus producing soap an glycerine... FYI!

    • @cuddles6938
      @cuddles6938 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      miagy420 Why not just buy Glycerine from people who produce Bio Diesel, Glycerine is a byproduct and they sell it to the cosmetic companies. I would think Glycerine would be better then using Lye. I see some making soap without Lye in it. I wonder how natural it is if it's as bad as she says.

    • @siirliusdk
      @siirliusdk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TekReview's Glycerin is the product of oils and lye mixed together....you cannot replace glycerin for lye....

    • @cuddles6938
      @cuddles6938 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sab's Soaps They make Glycerin soap, what does that have to do with Lye. Others make LYE FREE soap, as in they don't want to use LYE. If it aint Natural, it aint going on my body!

    • @Mitsubachi2529
      @Mitsubachi2529 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      TekReview's Lye is natural. Lye is made from ash in nature :).

      Zoey Olawumi ALL soap is made with fat. Soap manufacturers use both lard and/or tallow to make their soaps. Look for "sodium tallowate" on the ingredient list.
