1 zote bar 2 cups borax 2 cups washing soda 60 drops essential oil 😁 I've made this twice and always have to come back to hunt the recipe because writing it down would make too much sense for me to do. 😂
I have one of those portable washing machines that you can put into an RV which also has a spinner in it. we only use cold water. with this work in my small washing machine and if so how much would I have to put in there a tablespoon level or could you give me a rough idea. ??? Thanks If I only made half of this recipe could I take the other half make it up without the liquid and put it in a 2-gallon white bucket for next time...
We made this detergent and are very happy with results. The one thing we've found is it works best if we dissolve it in about 1\2 cup of water & then put it in the washer. Thanks!
i've been using this combination of ingredients for years, but I use a box of Zote--already shaved and don't use water to make a jell. The only reason for that is the weight of the finished product----had a fractured shoulder healing, so kept the combination dry until filling the washer with water. This cleans soooo well! Thanks for sharing.
The zote soap is so fragrant. Great for stain treating and handwashing. It helps repel mosquitos too. Fels napths is great for poison ivy oil in your clothes.
This is great, i've been wanting to make my own detergent. The only thing is I just priced all the stuff and it's expensive here in Canada. It's 29 for borax, 26 for the arm and hammer, zote bar is $15.99 and just for the glass jar that is 1 gallon is over $51. This was on amazon in Canada, such a huge price difference between the two countries. It still might be worth it to make it, not only that knowing that it isn't full of nasty chemicals is worth it. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe :)
Oh my gosh I had no idea things were that expensive for you guys! I thought our prices were expensive here in the US. It is better than store bought detergents but the Zote bar has some added fragrance. If you decide you want to make it and want to cut out more chemicals you could try the Castile soap instead of Zote. Thanks so much for watching!
I bought all my ingredients in Canada. Yes it slight more expensive but I was able to buy the wash soda and the borex for under $10 each. The bar of soap Zote I bought on Amazon. But they sell other castel bar soap for cheaper at the store .
I have used this recipe before, i saw it on tik tok but not the melted version. I am going to try this version dissolving the soap and ingredients in water to make a gel. I will get back to you with the results. BLESSINGS & THANKS KENTUCKY COUSINS!! 🙏🏽❤✝🔥 YOU WOULD MAKE MY MISSISSIPPI CHOCTAW GRANNY HAPPY with this information share. I just finished making this detergent, I found it very easy. My first load is coming out of washer now. I did add Laundry beads from Gain this time because I like that scent. Only essential oils I had were Tea Tree. Thank you for the easy to follow recipe. Going on the dryer with fresh washed in homemade laundry soap😊😊😊
I've made this or similar. The 5 gallons I make is a concentrate. I cut 50/50 for my laundry bottle. I haven't made laundry detergent for 2 for 2.5 years. I still have 3/4 bucket full.
I'm so excited about this recipe! I love the smell of the Zote bar and already have the ingredients on hand. Your instructions were so clear and simple and I finally feel like I can do this! Also loving the tips in the comment section, thank you all!
I found using boiling water breaks it down faster and to stir it a paint mixing attachment placed in my cordless drill saves my arm and time. Been making this for years and have saved big money. 👍
I made this and was freaked out by it being a jell and not dissolving in water and clumped in the washing soap container. Good to watch again for all the after making details 😅
Brilliant! I've seen other videos where they added all that extra water I didn't have space to store, and I wondered if making a more concentrated version was possible. This looks so much less messy and space efficient! I love it.
I just made this to try out. I recommend using an immersion blender once its set to make sure its all incorporated and it creates a smooth consistency :)
Very nice recipe. Im improvising with irish spring soap( I have some). Borax. I dont having washing soda, however heating baking soda to 400f will convert it to washing soda(youtube), and I have that. Technically it should all work :) Wish me luck! Thankyou.
Thank you so much for this! I don't know why people want to store a heavy 5 gallon bucket somewhere and keep refilling a smaller container....and having to shake it up or stir it each time you use it. I want simple and efficient and this seems to be it. I use the powder version and like it but would like to have liquid at times too.
Hey, I’m new here and yes I did subscribe because I was impressed by what I saw maybe about a month or two ago I was at Walmart and I noticed the ZOTE BAR and I was like I never seen that before, but my mind kept taking me back to it. I kept walking over there looking at it and I started to purchase it but after seeing this video tonight, it’s on the list. Thank you for giving the easy instructions and I will be trying it because laundry detergent is so expensive anymore. Thank you.😊♥️

I love the science behind this gel texture of recipe because powders don’t dissolve in our HE machine very well, even on HOT, we’ve been using a giant box of powdered Gain for quite awhile but I’ve been waiting to try to find the liquid on sale, no sales in months except tiny bottles when we usually get the GIANT liquid bottle at costco. With this recipe is it possible to skip the bar soap because from my research bars of soap aren’t detergent, when I tried it twice and even used vinegar as a fabric softener, the clothes looked and smelled clean, but I felt a soapy film building up on creases of jeans. Would it make it jelly like if I did all your steps but instead dumped like 3cups of gain into the gallon of hot water, dissolve and then like 1/2 c of borax and 1/2 of super washing soda? or would it stay a liquid? What makes it a gel? 😐
Typically you would use this in place of a typical laundry detergent. Some people put their detergent in the washer and then add this homemade laundry soap to make it stronger. I wouldn't recommend mixing them when making this though.
OMG I had a leftover container looks exactly like yours, assumed it was 2 gallons, made it exactly as you showed, only to find out I actually have a 1 gallon container... Should I just use smaller portions or is this stuff too strong to use lmao I feel so dumb 😅😅😅
Btw...Zote is made.from beef tallow, coconut oil, citronella, a fabric brightener and the colored ones have a colorant dye. It's gentle and strong at the same time. I make my homemade laundry soap from zote, water, baking soda, super washing soda and lemon juice.Just those four ingredients.
I can follow the process precisely and still have a problem with it separating sometimes. The soap fraction will collect at the top and water at the bottom.
I followed the recipe and instructions to a T, but with the white Zote soap bar and mine came out WAY THICKER than yours. I'm not sure what happened. I hope it's still okay to use.
I made this batch yesterday with boiling water. I made half a batch, because my container is smaller. It separated at the bottom and I have liquid at the bottom and the top is perfect. Any tips why? I’ve always done the dry method, so this is new to me. Please help!
The only time I have ever had an issue with mine separating was when I added oxi clean to it. Someone else said they had trouble with theirs separating also. I have been trying to make mine different ways to get it to separate but so far it hasn’t. Possibly try making it with just hot water and not boiling maybe.
I want to use this recipe but how do I do that if I am using a laundromat? Can I just put a cut into small pieces of soapbar and then toss it in the drum and add clothes??? What is the better way?
If it was me I would keep a big jar of it at home and each time I went to the laundromat I would put however much I need in a small jar to take with me.
I thought this was a concentrated recipe that you would mix it with water and put in recycled detergent containers then pump that into the detergent dispenser on the front load washing machine. I saw another similar recipe and they mixed the concentrate 50/50 with water
You can but I have found that when I add oxi clean it doesn’t allow the soap to thicken. So I add it directly to the washer instead of adding it when making the soap.

the zote bar in the video looks a lot bigger than the bar i have do you know how many oz of zote you used? Also i used the fels-naptha zote 5oz bar

Do you have to use the PINK ZOTE?
No, you can use any kind.
Hello how big is your zote bar ???? New Subscriber
Can i use this for do dishes?
No, it is only intended to be used on laundry.
@@LewisAcresHomestead thanks
How much do you use, what is the size of that scoop you use. To me it looks like a tablespoon size, is that correct?
Yes I used 1 to 2 tablespoons depending on the load size and how dirty the clothes are.
Will it lump up overtime or does it remain in liquid form????
It turns into a thicker mixture but it doesn’t get lumpy or get thicker over time. Once it thickens it stays at that consistency.
@@LewisAcresHomestead that's awesome and thanks for the video
I can follow the process precisely and still have a problem with it separating sometimes. The soap fraction will collect at the top and water at the bottom.
I’ve never had this issue before. Is it stored somewhere where it sweats and causes condensation in the container?
the zote bar in the video looks a lot bigger than the bar i have do you know how many oz of zote you used? Also i used the fels-naptha zote 5oz bar
The bar I used was a 14 oz bar.
I followed the recipe and instructions to a T, but with the white Zote soap bar and mine came out WAY THICKER than yours. I'm not sure what happened. I hope it's still okay to use.
About how many drops of essential oils do you use in that batch?
I used about 60 for 2 gallons.
@@LewisAcresHomestead ok, thx.
Question, not sure if it's been asked yet: is this a 7 oz bar of Zote or a 14.1 oz bar? It looks like the bigger bar, but I don't want to ASSume, LOL.
It is a 14 oz bar.
@@LewisAcresHomestead thank you! I’ll try it again next time. I’m going to use what’s on top. Which is 80% lol
Why the borax? I grate the pink zote and i use only that in the washing machine and it works fine.
The borax helps with odor, helps whiten clothes and overall amplifies the cleaning power of whatever soap or detergent you're using.
How much of the Zote bar? The ones on Amazon look smaller than what you are using
The Zote bar im using in the video is a 14 ounce bar.
Can I replace the borax with baking soda ?
You can, but you may need to use a little more soap each time because the baking soda is weaker than the borax.
That was interesting. Laundry detergent has gotten really expensive.
Yes it has!
@LewisAcresHomestead thank you!!!
Why must we add borax and washing soda? Can we use Zote alone?
They work together to create a stronger soap. If you just use zote alone it won’t be as efficient.
Has anyone tried this one in a front load.washer??
Does it remove stains
I have found that it can remove fresh stains but older stains need to be stain treated.
I thought this was a concentrated recipe that you would mix it with water and put in recycled detergent containers then pump that into the detergent dispenser on the front load washing machine. I saw another similar recipe and they mixed the concentrate 50/50 with water
You can do that if you want. I’m just showing how I use it.
So as the water starts to get cooler, it doesn't seem to be thickening up like yours is. Where did I go wrong? 😅
The only time I’ve ever had it not thicken was when I added additional ingredients. It can still be used even if it doesn’t thicken.
do you still use this?
I love this video!!!! Thank you so much! I'm totally gonna make this! (:
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Any reason why mine separated like oil and water? I did half the recipe…confused. Didn’t seem to happen to other people
The only time mine has ever separated was when I added oxi clean. Besides that I’ve never had an issue.
Can i add oxi clean?
You can but I have found that when I add oxi clean it doesn’t allow the soap to thicken. So I add it directly to the washer instead of adding it when making the soap.
@@LewisAcresHomestead thanks
I wonder how does it smell
If you put essential oil in it, it will smell like the essential oil. If you put nothing in it then it smells like the Zote bar.
