Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent Recipe

    Becky starts by answering some questions about homemade liquid laundry detergent. Then she shows you how to make it. First you start by grating the whole bar of zote into the 5 gallon bucket. Then you add 2 gallons of hot water and stir until the zote shavings dissolve. Then you add 3 more gallons of hot water to the bucket. Put the lid on and wait 24 hours.
    This makes a double strength soap, so before you use it, fill your gallon jug half way with water then fill the other half with your liquid laundry detergent. Give it a shake and it's ready to use.

    Hello. I'm Mexican and Zote soap (Jabón Zote) has been used for generations and generations (especially, washing baby clothes and cloth diapers). I'm happy to see how useful this soap is in other countries. P.S.: The white one leaves your white clothes super white and clean. 😀

      megan ochs Hello Megan! Actually, we use the whole bar, but this is when you wash your clothes by hand, but if you want to use it for your washer machine, it's better if you granulate it, just like in the video! I'm glad to hear that liked it! 😀

      Lucia Gave my wife is from Guatemala and she alsways uses it on her clothes. The only bad thing about the way the woman describes it is it's way watery. I wish there was a way to thicken it up like regular laundry soap.

    I made this about a year ago give or take I just finished up my first batch and I feel like I can give a good review of it now. I think it works really well. I have two teen boys who get really dirty one works at a mechanics shop cleaning lots of greasy things the other one practically lives in the woods lol. It works well on thier clothes. But it also doesn't irritate my skin or my daighters skin and we are both sensitive! Also I noticed my towels have never been softer and they feel so fluffy. And the biggest change I have noticed has been in my machine itself I use to have to clean my machine quite often because it always developed a smell after a week or two ( that's using tide by the way) my machine is so clean all the time and I havnt had the smell come back since I started using this. I would recommend

    Good morning Becky and all you do it yourselfers.
    I wanted to let you know that I just made my second batch of laundry soap per Becky’s recipe....however I didn’t wait until the next day to finish. While it was still warm I poured it into containers half full, warmed more water and filled the containers to the top. This morning the laundry soap is the perfect consistency. Saved me from having to do anything today. Perfect, on to other productive things. Stay safe and have a wonderful day.

      Hello everyone, I have been using this same soap since the first time I made it. I don’t think I’ll ever want to use store bought detergents. I love the fact that I have only spent a couple dollars on detergent in the past 3 months. Although I did choose to not dilute the soap as much as the first time I made it. The first time, I used the original recipe she demonstrated except I only added one cup of borax. The second time I made it I mixed 1 bar of zote soap to 8 gallons of water + 2 cups of borax. I can tell a difference in cleaning power although I still think I need to tweak the recipe a little more. My he washer is huge and I feel like 3 cups of the original recipe was not getting my husbands work clothes clean and even some of my kids really dirty clothes so that’s why I chose to dilute it less. Three cups of the original recipe works good if I wash like a small to medium load. I’m still going to work on changing the recipe until I make it to where it works for us. Has anybody had this issue?

The powdered version doesn't work well in cold water washing. I've not noticed any fading and I use my homemade soap in my HE machine, I just add it to the tub, not the dispenser it it gets gunt up.One more detail - Distilled or Purified water is best as TAP water has chemicals and may mold :( - Thanks for your version Becky!

    Thank you Becky for making this so simple. A year ago I tried to make laundry soap and mixed up the measurements. It was for a dry version and I put in one bar zotes and three cups borax two boxes of baking soda. To say the least I was disappointed. I have had this dry mixture sitting around since. I think now I might be able to salvage it. I didn't know what to do with it for the longest time.

    My soap is not only the best it costs pennies to make and it keeps my machine clean. Thanks for sharing your recipe for making soap. The only problem I had was that the soap was like jello. What I found was that if you add regular laundry detergent
    ( the smallest bottle of liquid soap) I use tide because I like the smell of tide and I use the one that has softener added to it. I make my dish soap the same way but instead of adding laundry detergent I add a large size of Ajax dish soap the next day because I like my dish soap to have suds and I like the smell of the lemons. I don’t use a full bar of soap I use half a bar to a 5 gallon bucket and it lasts me almost a full year. I also use this soap to clean everything even shampoo my carpets with it. It’s better than any soap on the market.

    200 gram Zote cost 88 cents here in the Philippines. 1 bought 4 bars. Noone does DIY detergent here so my family is really excited. Just got 1 question. What are the chances of the liquid soap gping bad because of storage temperature. Its very hot here and humid. I dont know if I should do the dry powder or this liquid version. I was thinking the liquid will work better since it will desolve bettter in cold water but Im afraid it will go bad in storage.

    there is an error with this video:
    the product made here is LANDRY SOAP while DETERGENT is totally different and much more effective. I have used the method described in the video for a year on my own landry. Its works somewhat but is only 50% effective at stain removal. I use 15 psi steam to clean stains followed up by the soap in the video else it will not clean the laundry.

  • @bethanieboo962
    @bethanieboo962 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hmmm, I made the soap EXACTLY how you directed. It’s not getting my clothes clean. Everyone raves about home made detergent but mine is somewhat of a bust. I do not have heavy soiled clothes and I work in a dental office so I’m not dirty and my clothes don’t really have stains persay. I do work out and I noticed a couple of my tops still smelled like sweat. I used a cup in a small to average sized load. Disappointed. What can I use to boost the cleaning power? To me it worked more like the cheap detergent that is all watery. Wonder what I did wrong?

    • @daydreambeliever6603
      @daydreambeliever6603 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bethanie Boo do you have hard water? That can make a difference. Soap doesn’t rinse well in hard water so the dirt and soap scum stay on your clothes. That’s why they add all of the surfactants and use chemicals in commercial detergents. You can try a cup of vinegar in your rinse water.

      This is as primitive as it gets. Like from the 1500’s. So what do you expect, especially when used in a HE washer? It’s entirety the wrong product. For people like her, who live in shacks in the woods, or for farmers, it might suffice because they don’t wear nice clothes.

    I make this recipe and it works well, but for ease, do not make it in a 5 gallon bucket. If you have a kitchen scale, weigh out 40 g or Zote (1/10 a bar), and add it to an old gallon milk container. Fill halfway with hot water and shake until disolved, then fill with water and add a few spoons of borax. No stirring, to transferring, no mess!

  • @maridigna6632
    @maridigna6632 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They say borax can be toxic. I believe this recipe turns out good because of it. Though optional, is it safe so far? Doesn't it burn your skin if I use this liquid soap for hand washing? Can you also make something for dish washing? Thank you

    I have been making laundry soap for years. My daughter is allergic to all store bought soap. I used to use Zote or Fels Napta, but now I make my own old fashion Lye soap bars with no added scents or colors, then use that soap to make my laundry detergent. I also use white vinegar as a liquid fabric softener.

    I have a question. On the video, you said you can make the detergent with just Zote without Borax or washing soda. If I want to do the powder version, can i just shred the Zote and put a little Oxyclean and / or baking soda? Mix them very well and put 1 or 2 TBSP of that mixture into my H.E. machine each time? Do you think it will work the same as the liquid version? If yes, it will save me a lot of time and money. Thanks

    Hello Becky! I followed this recipe and tried it, loved the process, citronella smell, and the price!!! But I noticed my laundry took a lot longer to dry (i air dry as i dont have a dryer), and felt residue on it...i really want this to work so i researched it, and found that this happens if u have hard water, the minerals will stick to laundry and build up over time. A solution was adding extra borax and washing soda to soften water. What do you think? Have you noticed this in your laundry? Is your water softer?
    Thank you!!!

    • @amariahg5450

      We have hard water where I live so I add 1 cup each washing soda and borax, and 1/2 cup baking soda. I also put a couple ounces of white vinegar in the fabric softener slot for each wash and it works really well, we don't have residue and our clothes feel softer than they did with conventional detergent.

      rednecktalkshow You can make it dry without water and powder it in a food processor if you dont want to use the water. you only use a table spoon at a time then. It is very concentrated stuff and you have to add that much water if you go liquid or it gels up to much to use. No issues with any smells in the laundry, gets everything clean every time.
