How to Paint a Sun Faded Old Outdoor Patio Umbrella or Outdoor Furniture with Spray Paint DIY

  • This video is a DIY do it yourself tutorial to add life to and fix a sun faded old patio umbrella or any outdoor furniture or fabric. This video shows you how to simply spray paint a faded outdoor patio umbrella. The patio umbrella I am fixing is a Hampton Bay 11 foot Solar Umbrella that was several years old and had faded and gotten mildew stains from being used in the Florida weather and sun. You can paint your umbrella with regular standard spray paint. You do not need to use the more expensive outdoor fabric spray paint. I used Rustoleum 2X paint and primer spray paint in satin wildflower blue and dark walnut. I used about 5 cans for an 11 foot umbrella and its base. I got the spray paint a t a local Walmart for about $5 per can. This umbrella is $300 new and for $25 dollars and a few hours of work it looks brand new and matches my patio decor perfectly. This is a great cheap umbrella canopy hack that can get you many more years out of your umbrella or outdoor deck furniture. If you want to love your umbrella or outdoor furniture again refurbish it with a quick spray!
    UPDATE: I made this video three months ago and the umbrella still looks amazing and like it is brand new. The regular spray paint is holding up perfectly and has not faded or come off.

    Your video was wonderful ! I have an umbrella from Orchards store. It was dark green and the outside faded. I follow your video and used rust-oleum in hunt club green. I was amazed by the results. It looks like a brand new umbrella. I only paid $13.00 for 2 bottles of paint and $5.00 for the plastic floor protector. Didn’t buy the comfort grip since I only needed to paint one side of the umbrella and I kept it the same color. I did wear a mask protector for spray painting.😊

    I spray-painted mine but I left mine hooked up and I opened it up laid it on the ground made it much easier and more of a consistent coverage. But I bought red umbrellas from Sam’s back in 2009 and I still have them up in my backyard. I have spray-painted them once and then have taken them down and pressure wash them twice in that amount of time and you know they’re still holding up the hardware is starting to go, and the edges of the umbrella are starting to unravel, but the damn paint held up. And I use Krylon that plastic paint I cannot believe how well it held up and I even used it on my outdoor furniture. Everything was pressure washed first though to get it clean.

    It looked great when it was all done and it certainly an option when you’re umbrella is faded, but it looks as though you spent about $50 on paint and you can certainly get a replacement umbrella for less than that.

    I have a 9 foot faded blue umbrella. I changed the top colour to burgundy using the Rustoleum 2X paint and primer spray recommended. This took 4 cans to complete. Some of the burgundy paint seeped through to the underside creating a unique design of deep blue and burgundy. It is a fantastic improvement. Also, thank you for mentioning the comfort grip. This worked like a charm and will be useful for other DIY projects.

    I have been doing spray painting projects for as long as i can remember an have never seen that 6$ attachment gun.
    That's a game changer so thank you for showing that cool gizmo.
    I saw an add for Krylon fabric spray paint but $12 a can makes it cost prohibitive. I have 4 large umbrellas.
    I may try one of each product as a test just to see.

    • @sharonbunting5584
      @sharonbunting5584 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Crank the umbrella down so that the fabric hangs more loosely. Pull The fabric from the tip of each spine.... you will see how the fabric has a little pocket at the tip of each spine holding it onto each spine. Next, remove the cap at the top of the pole which holds the center of the fabric to the pole. You can now remove the umbrella fabric. Everything goes back on in the reverse order.

    • @erikamiglioranza1559
      @erikamiglioranza1559 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's most certainly made from a synthetic fabric and there are dyes for that (like rit dyemore) but the fabric needs to be boiled with the dye (in a pot, on your stovetop) for an hour or so, and if you don't have a pot big enough for the umbrella fabric, then it's impossible. I have not found any other methods to dye synthetic fabrics at home yet :\
