  • There isn't anything I won't try to paint. I've painted bathroom tile floors, chandeliers, fans, furniture, and more! I have some old cushions on my patio that have faded and decided to give Rustoleum's Outdoor fabric paint a try! I love Rustoleum products! I was anxious to give this a try!

    I couldn't help but notice that during the painting process you started on the actual cushion.
    When using spray paint it's best to start off the surface you are painting then continue off this makes the paint more even on the finished product.

    I pressure washed my outdoor patio cushions and let them dry in 100 degree heat outside(I’m in California so it’s very dry not humid) then I applied the paint as you showed in the video and I got perfect even coverage.

    I am trying the fabric paint this weekend hopefully it goes well and doesn't take too many cans. I wasn't happy with the coverage with the hammered paint. I used it on an umbrella base to match the patio set and the bottom took half the can.

      @@kimberlythomas7408 Yeah. That's probably a good idea. I used to live in Kansas and the humidity was awful. I used some fabric paint when I lived there and always had mixed results because of it. Where I live now though, I usually have better luck than not. So, I'm assuming it's gotta be the humidity. Good luck! I hope it turns out well!

    Dang! I really love Rustoleum brand. I don't think you mentioned it, but did you wash the fabric before spray painting or had the cushions ever been sprayed with some type of water repellant? I'm also wondering if more full coverage coats of spray paint would have helped? If Rustoleum's fabric spray is like other fabric spray paints it is actually a dye so multiple light weight coats can make it more blotchy.
    I have tried a different fabric spray paints before (Simply Spray's brand has been my favorite so far) and eventhough it's nice to change the color of a chair, it really is SUPER expensive. I think I used 3 or 4 cans for ONE club chair. I have never tried Rustoleum's brand before, but I am a HUGE Rustoleum fan! I was really thinking it was going to be a good review 😭

      She did not do a very good job painting the fabric the blotchy over sprays you should blend into the fabric so it’s not so blotchy another thing is don’t try to paint a white cushion dark blue although it will take several more coats it will turn out good I rubbed the blotchy areas blending them in to the cushion cover with a rough towel that blended the paint into the fabric. The rubbing with the towel also made the fabric very soft it’s not scratchy or crunchy or rough

    I've used these dyes (though not Rustoleum) to make a faded Red Umbrella look new again. Worked great and still doing ok halfway through its second Summer.
    Trying to change a fabric's color from White to a Very Dark Navy is asking a lot of any "paint" (or Dye). Do enough coats and the white would eventually get covered... ok maybe...if the dye doesn't build up in thickness which I wouldnt expect. The (spray) Dye I used was very "watery" and dried with no buildup at all, so build-up in the thickness of the "dye layer" isnt likely...but I only did 3 light coats so i dont know for 100% certain.

    Do you think it was blotchy because of the color change? I mean, going from white to that dark blue, general rule of thumb is to use a grey primer. Not sure if that is an option for fabric. Now, i know you didnt like the coverage, but how is the actual texture of the cushions? Id like to hear your opinion. I want touch up my red outdoor cushions, but in the same color. I'm just curious if this product does in fact keepimg close to the integrity of the fabric or if it hardened it a lot. Id love to hear your thoughts!

      Phew, I'm not entirely sure Lilian! My gut says painting it would leave the fabric feeling rough... Maybe check out some videos where people have dyed their slipcovers (or similar fabric) and ask them how it went/what they recommend! I'm sorry for not having a better answer, but I just don't want to steer you wrong and mess up your slipcover!

    Such a bummer the spray didn’t work, especially considering the brand. I have to say, your skin always looks so great, do you mind if I ask what products you use? 😊💕

      Well, gracious! You are super sweet. I have always used over the counter products until one of the girls that works in my store also sells Rodan & Fields. I started using it about 4 months ago. So, far I really like it! :)

    It looks like the color was flashing because of the humidity. Which gives it that white-ish tint:) I would Try using a blow dryer as you spray and see if that works better:)

    I want to spray paint a dress and I'm going for a watercolor look, so the uneven coverage doesn't bother me. My question is how does it feel? Would it work on clothing? Going through the wash?

    • @JenniferDecorates
      @JenniferDecorates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It did feel a little stiff, I would not use it on clothing.

    I’m wondering how the fabric felt after the paint ? You didn’t mention it in the video ? We’re they soft still !

    I’m curious about how it wears, does it transfer to clothes or rub off on hot humid days, how does it fair in direct sun over time? Etc would love to know!

    Thanks for trying the procedure ... darn, it didn't work. It very well may have been the humidity. because when I look at my hair (witch frizz) the humidity must have an equally strange effect on the fabric. You gave it a good old college try!

    I painted in a humid environment with chalk paint and it turned out off. Maybe the humidity effected the splotching.

    if done on a hot humid day you have to take into fact the humidity that will affect it and give your outcome. try again in the spring/fall once humid days are gone.

    Any paint will struggle in high humidity. I hope you’ll try it again w/ less humidity; you might love the results. 😊

  • @lindabarrow8

    It could just be something in or on the fabric. I believe that is the problem. I have a huge umbrella to paint, I hope it turns out!!!

    I noticed the comment below. I agree when painting anything always have your hand angled and locked and when reaching the edge of the material allow your nozzle to flow evenly for that 1 second. This avoid dark spots when spraying paint on anything. When pressing down on the nozzle again you'd be doing it on the cardboard not on the fabric.

    Just curious if the fabric was soft?

    • @JenniferDecorates
      @JenniferDecorates  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, they were outdoor cushions. I would say they were semi-soft? Do you think that would have made a difference?

    You mentioned how hot it was outside. That would be the issue with coverage. Drying too fast, making it spotty. Paint in a cool area without direct sun.

      Modern spray paint drip much faster than in the past. I have found that this can cause less than uniform coverage. Most spray paint also have a range of operating homily in the directions.

    Hi Jennifer, I was going to say the same thing as Chriselda said. Being a designer, I have an eye for that type of things. I just had some kitchen stools upholstered for a client and the upholster asked if I wanted new foam. I said yes, because the dirt and oily things could and do come through the new fabric. So, when I looked at your white cushions I saw a lot of splotches on them. I am sure that was the reason it didn't work. Try clean fabric for another test. Bet you will get better results. PS. • @JenniferDecorates

      It was fairly stiff, but it was also outdoor fabric which is already stiff.
