Great video! You drove by my house in Ballymun. Thanks for being kind, it's full of great folks 👍✨ My daughter had her 1st driving lesson today. I'll put her onto your channel and app ✨

The reasoning I've heard for Reverse around the corner, is that it's meant to simulate reversing into a parking bay, except you're not potentially putting other cars that may be parked at risk. Great content though, love your attitude!
They would just take you to a car park and direct you to an empty area for the reverse bay park. Reverse round a corner is taught so that if you have gone the wrong way and the road is too narrow to do a 3-point turn, you will know another safe method of turning your car around
@dorothrrystyles9403 Ireland doesn't do parking maneuvers, just hill start, turnabout and reverse around the corner. So it's as close as it gets anyway.
@@Pingstery yes true,, and while it’s def a good way to somewhat simulate reverse bay park, it’s not the actual reasoning for it being on the test. It’s just to learn another way to turn the car around. That’s why I responded haha

Good video. I passed my test in Ireland earlier this year on the second attempt. Failed the first time for coasting when cornering. Sounds like I would have passed if I'd been doing it in the uk. One difference between the video and a real test is that during the actual test there would be no chatting and the tester would not inform you of mistakes as you go along. But I understand that you formatted the video that way because it had to be watchable.
@williampatrickfagan7590 Yes, I have made a point of not doing that now that I know. Both in the second test, which I passed, and in my subsequent driving.

I'm from Derry city under UK law ( occupied Ireland ) and in your test your have to have 2 hands on the wheel, not allowed coasting at all just the same as this, a 3 point turn, hill start and parallel parking that's the north

A little tip for you is to make sure you have a good view with the passenger mirror of that rear lower corner of the car so you can line it up easier with the kerb or verge when reversing. Good luck on the day.
@@Sarah-pk1tw I did my test back in the late 70s and my instructor said if you can learn to be comfortable and relaxed in the car you'll find yourself driving better and enjoying it and being more aware of your surroundings.
Reversing into a parking bay is now part of the driving test in Ireland. Also, when opening the drivers door, use your left hand. The reason being, that you are automatically looking into the drivers door mirror, so you see any traffic coming up to overtake your parked car.
In the 25+ years I have reversed around a corner may times - in cars, tractors, forklifts (with a load) and more recently in our old campervan. Very handy skill to have. Also helps you with parallel parking.
I passed my test on the third try. One of the best things I learned before my 3rd try was that the tester isn't trying to find reasons to fail you and when you make a mistake (like slightly off position in a turn) the tester will try to give you a second chance to do the same manoueuver correctly to show that you do know how to do it. Sometimes you just stress a bit and over correct on a turn on the first try, but if you consistently repeat the same mistake 3 turns in a row, there is a problem with your driving and you need to practice and try again another day. One tip I heard (I dont know if this applies to all test centres but it did in mine), if you end up back in the test centre in about 20 minutes, there's a good chance you've passed because the fewer mistakes you make, the fewer manouevers the examiner will make you repeat (e.g. the off position turn example I mentioned earlier. If you clear all your turns flawlessly then the driver won't seek out an extra turn to see if you make that mistake a second or third time). If your test takes closer to 30 minutes then you've probably failed because the examiner has taken more time to give you a second chance to do a manouever. If its a grade 2 error and you make the mistake once, you can still pass, but if you repeat that mistake 3 times in a row, you're in trouble. Also, the longer you're driving, the more time for you to acrue mistakes. If the examiner finds no faults within the first 15 minutes, they're pretty confident in your driving and will just bring you back to the test centre rather than waste more time when you're unlikely to rack up tonnes of mistakes in the next 5 mins after clearing 15 minutes without faults. On my third test, I was back in the test centre within 24 minutes and I was pretty confident I'd passed because the test had gone quickly. I was getting tested in a town that gets pretty congested so the extra four or so minutes could be down to sitting at lights or busy junctions and I knew I'd driven well enough for the 20 minutes that the examiner didn't need to allow extra time for me to correct mistakes. I was a little nervous til he said "congratulations" because the 24/25 minute mark could have been a narrow pass or a narrow fail.
If either of you could get me driving, you'd deserve a medal! I drove this exact route on lessons, I remember stalling the car three times at the junction at 9:02 and getting blown out of it from the drivers behind. I also had an incident involving a red light breaker that scared me away ever since.
I agree. I did 2 test car in 1973 and h g v in 1983. Passed both first time. But, one never ceases to self admonish oneself for making errors. I told a driver once, to buy a car with indicators next time he buys a car. Over an hour following him in traffic, he never once used them.
I was taught push and pull 20 year ago in the UK. I don't see what the issue is. It teaches coordination. I was also made to do every type of maneuver even though only required to do 3 or 2 can;t remember. Was ex police officer was actively trying to fail me.Then gave me lecture after about people being killed through reckless/dangerous driving.
It used to be that when you were on your 2nd provisional license, that you could drive unaccompanied without a licensed driver (1st/3rd etc would recquire one). So you could turn up to your test with your 2nd provisional, break every rule and fail miserably.;Then drive off on your own perfectly legally.
Dont coast for long periods of time. The engine not being engaged in the transmission means the alternator is no longer charging the battery and you'll find out when you turn the key one day and find your battery flat
I had to do parallel parking back in the day which stands me in great stead these days. My sister never learned and can drive round in circles looking for somewhere to drive straight into.
22:00 is a sure grade 3 and fail unfortunately. In Ireland, many of the stop signs are extremely faded, and you have to stop completely on the line to pass.
I actually have reversed around a corner, mostly on country roads where it was too dangerous to do a 3-point turn. I think the rolling the wheel thing is from the days of mechanical steering where hitting a stone or pothole could cause one to lose the steering wheel. Interesting video.
The Irish test is a money racket made setup to make you fail. You need to take 12 lessons before you even sit the test at minimum €60 a lesson. Then you have to pay for test and licence
@@GodAmonstGamers it's all very expensive, but my examiner from the North when I did my test in Dundalk said drivers in the Rep. have the edge over them because of those compulsory 12 lessons. But yes, the whole thing is an overpriced racket for sure.
@DrivingSchoolTV don't get me wrong the place isn't as bad as some parts of Dublin, live there myself but it carries a bad neighborhood name from years ago. Also I did my reverse around the corner for my test at the exact same junction lol
7:07 that why in Ireland most drivers don't reverse or it takes ages for them to do so, because it is impossible with two hands on the wheel reversing proper way.
No idea why this popped up on my feed because I’ve had my license (Irish) for years! I really enjoyed it though! I’ve heard quite a few people saying they would go to the UK to get a license as it’s easier to pass than here? It’s not difficult to pass here, you just have to know what to do and what not to do. A good instructor can get anyone to pass unless you’re dangerous and shouldn’t be on the road anyway 🫣😂 Good luck to everyone taking their test 👍
Before doing your test, visit the test centre a few times, sit in it and observe proceedings. That way, when you are taking your test, you will be more at ease with yourself and more relaxed. You are more familar with your surroundings.
Reverse turning. As regards the mirror point, one can stop and adjust the mirrors and then proceed. When I did my own test over 50 years ago, it was a one piece manoeuvre.
Don't feel bad about the bus, they are tricky to navigate around, I failed my first test because I "failed to anticipate a bus would pull out" when his indicator was indicating opposite to the road and was inside a dedicated bus stop. Not sure if it's still a thing but some insurance companies allow you to take an additional "test" and if you're deemed safe you can save 20% on the policy. Regards to driving in the UK, you guys are absolute nuts, the amount of speeding / tailgating verges on American levels. Not as bad as urban Canadian drivers mind you.
Passed on my third attempt but should of passed first time. Fecking coasting he failed me for and I know I wasn’t but I did have a habit of hovering my foot over the clutch which I stopped after that test. I tried pleading my case but he probably needed his quota of fails that week. Second time was a disaster, I knew I’d failed within five minutes, had to borrow a car to do the test and didn’t have a chance to practice on that car, had never driven that brand before which was a stupid thing to do for your test. My sister who to this day can’t bloody reverse passed first time!
You’re in my neck of the woods Francis! Honestly I feel like they should take the reverse around the corner out and change it to bay parking and parallel parking. We also as learners do not go on the motorway. You basically get thrown in deep to go by yourself after you pass.
First thing that your man mentions is about reversing around a corner and when do you ever need this! I couldn't stop laughing as since I've learnt how to drive recently this is the one thing that I've questioned. We never would need to know how to do this. In fact the English driving test has parallel parking which makes far more sense! Also to mention Ireland and Australia have two of the hardest driving tests in the world statistically.
Doesn't make any difference anymore as a large number of drivers have never passed an Irish driving test. There are drivers from all over the world with little or no driving skills and they are driving on whatever licence they can get their hands on. Recently came across an Asian driver driving on a Romanian license, it's a free for all out there. I got a C1 licence about 20 years ago and the test was over 1 and a half hours long but what we were taught was defensive driving, I have carried that over to driving my car and it kinda works like the way you think when riding a bike, and that's everyone out on the road is out to kill you so 100% concentration and anticipation of others on the road making the most stupid manoeuvres and mistakes, it's kept me out of trouble and I have avoided many accidents by using a kind of spider sense, if you think someone is about to do something stupid, well hang back and then when they f up you're well clear of aftermath.
At 1:18 and 21:59, there is no Stop sign accompanying the road markings. I'm not familiar with the Rules of the Road in the Republic of Ireland, but in the UK (both Great Britain and Northern Ireland), I think Stop road markings without an accompanying Stop sign are *not* legally enforceable. You'd probably still fail a driving test, though (I'll leave it to Francis to answer that one). Also, I believe that the driving test in the Republic of Ireland still requires you to know your hand signals to indicate your direction or braking. How many drivers have _ever_ needed to use hand signals? Ross should have tested Francis on those; that would have been interesting to watch! 😄
14:18 That type of 3-point turn is highly situational though, I have done that exact manouver many, many times since it's one of the most convenient ways to turn around where I currently live. Either that or I have to go half a kilometer up the road (either of the roads to be clear) to be able to do another turnaround instead so I wouldn't call it a useless manouver to practice.
I failed my first test in Tallaght, which has about 14 roundabouts in the test route because I coasted to every one. My instructor never called me up on it in any lesson I took.
Only twice in my life have I ever reversed around a corner since I passed my test 1. I was trying to find a place in the middle of nowhere and was stuck going the wrong way on a country lane no wider than my car, I reversed into a side line so I could turn around and go back the way I came. 2. I was in an overcrowded retail park and had to reverse round the corner of one of the units to be able to get out
That was actually pretty interesting. I never would of thought it was ok to steer with one hand on an English driving test. I also thought he'd fail you when i saw you going around that bus when there was an oncoming car. Surprised that would slide in England too.
14:20 funnily enough I do this every single day, though my situation is fairly rare. Maybe its more useful in a rural setting than in the middle of London
When I did my professional driving test, it was at that centre. There was a near 50/50 split from those who failed as to if they failed at the first junction leaving the industrial estate, or if they failed doing the same turn back into the industrial estate. Probably the most unforgiving test centre around.
As an English guy who learned to drive years ago I was stunned to hear him talking about how relaxed it is in England now with the steering. There is no way on earth years ago you would have passed your test steering the way he was talking about. In fact it was stricter than the way the Irish guy said it was in Ireland. You had to use the awkward 'push and pull' method which everybody stopped doing as soon as you'd passed your test!! I'm stunned you can actually pass your test turning the wheel with your palm and the other hand on your leg. That's got to be a joke surely.
Loved this! I didn't focus on my mistakes, I was convinced I'd failed so I just wanted the feedback at the end, and weirdly enough I relaxed. I think that was key to passing for me 😂 I never said I was normal 😅
If only Ross was a driving tester, there would be fewer licensed drivers on Irish roads. Since the 2020/2021 lockdowns driving standards have deteriorated in Ireland. And it doesn’t help with some road users flipping between being pedestrians and back… and the number of motorists running red lights is shocking.
2:35 Fun fact about Irish traffic lights, yes they do go from red to green without the amber being illuminated. This contravenes Road Traffic legislation, were it clearly says the sequence in which the lights should be illuminated and currently no traffic lights in the Republic of Ireland comform to the Road Traffic Act making every single traffic light in Ireland illegal. Very common in Ireland, making laws that nobody follows or that are not enforced, with the exception of tax laws that are always enforced.
That's not true at all. None of the Road Traffic Acts define the sequence anywhere, only the shape, size, and number of lights. The sequence is defined in supplemental departmental manuals and IS EN 12368. "The signal sequence is: red, green, amber, red"
I have reversed round a corner, used to do it all the time when I stopped at the local shop as the road was narrow and there were always cars parked on the side of it so the easiest way to turn around was to reverse into the single track access road for a depot and then turn right 😅. Turning about would have been more of a pain, the side road wasn't wide enough to reall do a u-turn, you could turn into a carpark and do a lap but why? You were either going to reverse into the side road or out of the side road (if you were less sensible)
Start of the video I was thinking, why do I know all these areas. Realised I did some practice driving and manouvers in all those areas with my friend before her test! Loved the start on a hill on a flat surface there because technically there is an elevation :D
I reverse round a corner most days as it’s the easiest way to turn around in my road after coming off my driveway but I was never taught how to do it in lessons

So you could turn up to your test with your 2nd provisional, break every rule and fail miserably.;Then drive off on your own perfectly legally.
I got my driving test, no problem in London. I failed in Ireland twice after that!
Don't look at problem look at the solution. Amazing 👏
Dont coast for long periods of time. The engine not being engaged in the transmission means the alternator is no longer charging the battery and you'll find out when you turn the key one day and find your battery flat
What a good video! You 2 are unbelievably engaging!
I passed my test in ireland about 6 months ago it is nerve-wracking driving here for sure!
Well that deserves a huge congrats Anne 😄
Thanks so much!
Passing the bus you'd have had a serious in the UK. Forcing other traffic to slow or swerve, and the bus was indicating to move away too!!!
My lessons were 45, so not terrible
The reversing round a corner does seem pointless but the maneuver itself I found useful for reversing into parking spaces.
Mans driving through Ballymun and admiring how nice it is lol
@@Jetlis 😂 ok I’ve since heard it’s a bit rough but what’s actually not nice about the area?
@DrivingSchoolTV don't get me wrong the place isn't as bad as some parts of Dublin, live there myself but it carries a bad neighborhood name from years ago. Also I did my reverse around the corner for my test at the exact same junction lol
Reversing around a corner is to show ability in reversing and car control is at a high level
7:07 that why in Ireland most drivers don't reverse or it takes ages for them to do so, because it is impossible with two hands on the wheel reversing proper way.
No it is not. I use 2 hands and door mirrors when reversing and parking.
The reversing around the corner... after I past my driving test my instructor told me "you'll never have to do that again, cause its illegal" 😂😂😂
Illegal to reverse from minor road to main road, but not visa versa.
My instructor just said ‘well there’s the silly part out of the way’ haha!
9:38 Coming from Stockholm I felt the opposite, but I can see it as compared to London... There's a reason I moved to Dublin instead!
I’m delighted to see this collab! Ross is so knowledgeable and has helped me out when I started through insta DMs. His insta page is also great too!
Ross is actually so good! The amount he cares and the motivational nuggets are deadly
Ross is a very good driving instructor
Before doing your test, visit the test centre a few times, sit in it and observe proceedings.
That way, when you are taking your test, you will be more at ease with yourself and more relaxed.
You are more familar with your surroundings.
This was fun. Thanks guys 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Great content as always! Thanks so much Francis you absolute legend! Reverse round the corner ….. bruh! 😂😂😂 keep up the great work!
Haha exactly! Have YOU ever reversed around a corner? I'll have a tenner on no 🤦♂️🤣
Reverse turning.
22:01 Ops you didn't stop at the STOP junction
Wa hahahaha yeah he didn't clock it 😂
Passed on my third attempt but should of passed first time.
Im getting my D license with Go ahead and ISM, and i doing those roads every day, was so nice to seeing it on a video hahaha
You’re in my neck of the woods Francis! Honestly I feel like they should take the reverse around the corner out and change it to bay parking and parallel parking. We also as learners do not go on the motorway. You basically get thrown in deep to go by yourself after you pass.
I am! I loved it. You're very lucky to live in Ireland! Not so lucky with your driving test though lol....
@ I wouldn’t go through it again if you paid me I’ll say that much 😂
@ 😂😂😂😂🙈
In Northern-ireland you have to feed the wheel. Both hands on the wheel. You also can't coast in Northern Ireland.
I hate the reverse around a corner argument, it’s for reverse parking just without taking out cars.
14:33 I would hazard reversing around a near side corner is a vestigial common element from the rigid (HGV) test.
4:54 I don't see it, where is the road flashing?
There’s a flashing amber light for those turning left indicating they should yield to cyclists (so he said)
@@davidsmith3263 ah I see it now, i was focusing in the middle but the ground lights were on the left
Ireland is a tricky one! 😅
@@Wallfacer2306 oh trust me I KNOW!! 😩
I failed my first test in Tallaght, which has about 14 roundabouts in the test route because I coasted to every one. My instructor never called me up on it in any lesson I took.
you should do a driving in america mock test
Whichever state is 4 right turns and here's your licence.
Coffeezilla doing side quests
Only twice in my life have I ever reversed around a corner since I passed my test
1. I was trying to find a place in the middle of nowhere and was stuck going the wrong way on a country lane no wider than my car, I reversed into a side line so I could turn around and go back the way I came.
2. I was in an overcrowded retail park and had to reverse round the corner of one of the units to be able to get out
When you reverse out of a parking space, or into one, you are reversing around a corner.
That was actually pretty interesting. I never would of thought it was ok to steer with one hand on an English driving test. I also thought he'd fail you when i saw you going around that bus when there was an oncoming car. Surprised that would slide in England too.
I passed my test from that centre. Good memories.
14:20 funnily enough I do this every single day, though my situation is fairly rare. Maybe its more useful in a rural setting than in the middle of London
Do people not reverse into their driveways though? Wouldn't fancy reversing out onto a bussy road first thing in the morning
When I did my professional driving test, it was at that centre. There was a near 50/50 split from those who failed as to if they failed at the first junction leaving the industrial estate, or if they failed doing the same turn back into the industrial estate.
Probably the most unforgiving test centre around.
Great video, love it!
Damn that driving instructor is gorgeous.
Reversing round a corner is for parking skills without potentially interacting with another vehicle.
Awesome to see you do this in my area.
Loved this!
I didn't focus on my mistakes, I was convinced I'd failed so I just wanted the feedback at the end, and weirdly enough I relaxed. I think that was key to passing for me 😂 I never said I was normal 😅
Omg Samily, you passed?? 🤣😉 Yeah I really think the key is being relaxed but it's easier said than done when it means loads to you
If only Ross was a driving tester, there would be fewer licensed drivers on Irish roads. Since the 2020/2021 lockdowns driving standards have deteriorated in Ireland. And it doesn’t help with some road users flipping between being pedestrians and back… and the number of motorists running red lights is shocking.
the fact you said ballymun looks good is the funniest thing ever
Reverse around the corner is a stupid day to day manouver but it does show a good ability to control the car when reversing in my opinion
That was the exact place where did my reverse around the corner, but failed when over took two buses stopped one was already on the junction.
where is the link to Ross's Driving tips
I enjoyed this. I dont drive. lol. Still their banter was good, and was interesting hearing about the differences between the two tests.
I passed my test from that centre, ah memories!
I reverse round a corner most days as it’s the easiest way to turn around in my road after coming off my driveway but I was never taught how to do it in lessons
8:10 I have lost count of how many times he has chased so far as he mentions it.
Hilarious when I had to do a hill start with my EV in my test in Ireland
Think they're marking on observations for hill start with an EV...
@@eavannicgabhann Fair point but it was just looking at the mirrors and doing the signalling so it was similar to any other start off basically.
@@ShaneFagan yeah did my test in one too - easy peasy!
