When I first tried Contra (maybe a few years ago, never played it as a kid) I couldn't even manage to jump onto the exploding bridges in the first level. I probably picked up all kinds of power-ups I didn't need. At the "running forward" sections, I didn't even think you could dodge those bullets by ducking. I always flailed around, jumping from left to right, getting hit by every bullet. And then Ryu shows up going "it's actually not that hard, bro".
This was your BEST contra video! No deaths, no 30 men code, no edits, controller cam! You made it look real easy. That was amazing! I have played this game for years and have never beat it without the 30 man code. #greatnessconfirmed
The S really makes all the difference. Losing that weapon to let's say to a laser crushes all hopes (if you could get the S back in time that is lol) Kudos though👍
The arcade version is also very hard, but far shorter and can be done in roughly 10 minutes. Getting used to the expanded quirks and difficulty of the NES version does make it manageable within 12-15 minutes. Great job!

Nice run! I finally beat this game solo and without the code/continues after being inspired by your debunking video for it. I've been attempting to beat it without dying off and on since then but usually get bored after a couple attempts. I'll get it one of these times. At 9:50, I'm pretty sure if you just keep running and immediately jump, you'll go over his first shot, then you can land in front of him and duck/shoot to kill him faster.

He could have two videos per game, one explaining his journey and the tricks he's going for and one for his fastest speedrun.
I remember a issue of Nintendo power where a game tester said his greatest achievement was beating this game in 10 minutes with a power glove. We had no power glove, and it took us years to figure out 10 minutes was impossible. Prior to the speed run concept, it was about how many times we could complete the game through with the original 3 lives. The 5th playthrough was as far as we could manage to go.

at the end of level 3, you can bypass killing the arms to just kill the head. stand just to the left of center and shoot up, jump to dodge when needed and you will save valuable time .

You would’ve had a faster time if you ran to the left after beating the stage 2 and stage 4 bosses, if you positioned yourself in the right spots after defeating all bosses so less time is taken in transition between levels, and at 4:05 if you took out two targets on the left and then right rather than taking out the two middle targets and then the ones on the very right and left.
I beat it in 22 minutes. You can find my video on my channel. And yes, i was not trying to speedrun it, i was just playing for fun and to beat it. And yes, i used turbo buttons, because i'm tired of mashing shoot button.

He means if someone were to be on their last life in that exact scenario, would it count as beating the game, or would it be a game over and they'd have to start over?
It would have been a game over. The game respawns you (costing a life) before it transitions into the ending. That being said, even if you do die on your last life, if you have any shots left on the screen that happen to kill the boss and score you the points needed to earn you an extra life, you can potentially save yourself in this way, as seen here th-cam.com/video/V8cNv7RD36s/w-d-xo.html
I never had too much trouble with Contra. As stated by many it gets much harder doing a co-op run. I'm not saying I can beat Ryu's time but I have beaten it at a decent pace before speed running was really a thing. Like 20 minutes.
Good job. If you want to spice the game up some, beat the game on one life while collecting all power-ups, even the ones that downgrade your current condition. It forces you to use some power-ups that may be awkward or that you might not be used to using. One missed power-up fails the mission.
Id suggest switching to laser or fire by the end of waterfall. Stage 4 boss isn't super fast with spread, I find, because spread dps is only significant if you can hit with every shot. You can switch back right after.
I remember when this game was new. Must of been 7-8 years old. Good old days of having fun games to play. Newer console games aren’t fun. NES and snes along with 25 cent arcade are where it’s at.
How are you picking up that Rapid fire, without replacing your Spread.......? I've played this many times, over the years, but never became very good at it. I remember that any weapon pickup, replaces the last weapon. Am I wrong, or are there discrepancies, between some weapons?

If you get the R power up AFTER you have the S power up, it makes the S power up better ( they move faster and do more dmg )
