- This run has really nice execution all the way through. The biggest time loss was the global timer on hangar. Although the snowfield boss spawned in a sub optimal location, it resulted in getting the good global timer for the energy zone flames. I might still try for a 9:47 at this point, but I'm very excited about this run. ( The mask is just for advocacy.)

Joined the stream during this run, on base1 boss. Seeing low 4:24 sensor kill followed by the glitch kill, that was something. And that energy zone, that JJ kill! Closing this run out after seeing that juicy -3.3 split, very impressive, congrats!
That was amazing. I have only managed to beat Contra once, and I died 100+ times doing so. You did an awesome job.

Wow. Great job! I've been playing Contra a lot lately. Trying new strats. Got my time down to 13:17. When I looked for the WR, I had no expectation of it being 3/5 minutes better ! I never knew about all of these briliant faster ways. Thanks for sharing!
This shows how well crafted this game is. There are no stage skips or similar exploits. Just high level strategies.

Offtopic: Can I ask, how do you setup your gear at home to stream your old NES games? Ive been trying to find some answers on Google, but without luck. Maybe do a video on that too? ;) What equipment is needed etc.

Yeah no problem. I just use a device called a gv-usb2. It has composite inputs on one end and just plugs into a USB port on my computer. I use a few sets of composite cables and splitters to get the Nes, and crt to run into the gv-usb2. This is also a very affordable capture device, generally at about $30. You could spring for nicer ones if you like, but it serves me well. It’s also in a different language than English, (Korean I believe) but there is a tutorial online for what to click and get it running. Super easy to follow.

This might be my 5th or 6th time watching this to get the new waterfall skips (I watched *aiqiyou's* tutorial, and the 2nd skip especially is being a pain in the ass to get, I dunno what I'm doing wrong, the skip seem to only work 50% of the time) and I can't help but be amazed by your consistency every single time I watch this. You'll forever be a legend among the speedrun community.
Also, thank you for everything you do for the community. From modding the Contra page at speedrun.com to making a full tutorial for speedrunning Contra (for the NES-cathlon way back, remember?). That tutorial was pretty much the sole responsible for me to try speedrunning this game, and I had no idea it could be this fun.

So that second skip is easy to miss because of the vertical jump where you have to also shoot at the guy in the water. The reason it’s messing up the skip sequence is because the jump to that ledge above is quite a bit higher than most of them. Due to this factor it’s very easy to move to the right too early because you want to shoot that asshole in the water. So what happens is the screen isn’t finished scrolling, and then your movement happens while the screen is just finishing scrolling, rather than after. I’d recommend paying extra close attention to that area, and make sure you don’t move right and shoot, until bill has starting his descent from that jump. The next two jump vertical jumps you’ll also want to keep this in mind, but since the ledges you’re jumping too aren’t as high up, you have a large window on the descent. I hope that can help your consistency in the second skip.
@@Angrylanks Ooohhh, that was it, I just tried it a few times with savestates, and I was moving right too early while the screen was still scrolling up, just like you said! I had a feeling it had something to do with the way I was dealing with the guy in the water, but since it was difficult to shoot him I decided to not shoot him, and instead jump before his bullets and their explosions could hit me. I also tried triggering him then waiting for the bullets to fall beneath the platform I was going to jump to, to avoid getting killed by the explosions, but it loses too much time too early in the run to not try the other methods. And even when I tried not to shoot him, I was still moving right too soon, which messed up the values for the skips.
But now I just tried waiting for the right moment after the beginning of the descent of the jump, like you said, and now I'm even able to kill the guy in the water consistently, since waiting that long also helps with my timing on the next jump, which triggers him. Imma practice it a bit more then I'll try to lower my time again.
Also, just fiy, the times I killed him and got the skip were the times when I could tell my jump height would be perfectly aligned with the bullets if he had shot them, but most of the times I managed to jump *beneath* his bullets I didn't get the skip, and the screen appeared to have scrolled less than it did at that same jump during the times I got the skip. It seems to be nearly impossible to jump beneath the bullets AND still get the skip, since the main reason I managed to jump beneath the bullets seemed to be because the screen didn't scroll enough. Therefore, if the jump beneath the bullets was easy then the values for the screen to scroll enough for a skip to be made were already messed up. Don't know if this is useful info or even how accurate my perception of this is, just thought it wouldn't hurt to let you know about my experiene with this method.

Africa By Toto yeah I also noticed some work arounds a with missing the shot. I experimented with those ideas of jumping in certain places instead to try and create a consistent way to take that damn shot out, but in the end it proved too inconsistent as a whole, and I decided the shot should be manageable. Once I understood the positioning, and later movement it wasn’t much of a problem. But there is a ledge if you wait and jump instead that will always cause the three way shot to spilt and explode at a lower point on the screen. So if you wanted to you could stay in that ledge without worrying about the shot, and lose (I’m guesstimating) about a half second. So it would still be faster than the old 2 skip routes. I’d honestly just go with the shot though. It gets more consistent. Which it seems like you’re already saying at this point for yourself.

Magnificient. Perfect execution on all of the stages. I've read the description and if that boss spawning works in your favor, could you push it to 9:47? Or maybe less?
Technically if he got a perfect boss spawn, perfect global time in hanger, frame perfect grenade jump in snow, and an extremely risky jump called the "leap of faith" past a randomized flame, the time could be as low as 9:44.
