We have a 3-week-old Maytag "traditional" washer that we paid an arm and a leg for back in mid-December, and just today a flat sheet got wound around and under the agitator, just like this. We were told that Whirlpool and Maytag are one and the same company. Repair person won't be here until the day after tomorrow, and although my husband was VERY impressed with your demonstration and how easy it looked, we're going to have them come and fix this, thereby lodging the complaint with Maytag. If we don't have the guy come, Maytag will never believe how early we ran into trouble if they end up having to replace the washer or something. Thanks again!

Trying to pull that middle thing, it hit me in the nose, because it was super hard to pull out. So lesson learned, be careful trying to pull it out. Lol 😂😂😂

My machine must be a newer model or something, I don't see that bolt. I had to pull on the item breaking the item (hopefully not the machine). That is horrible design, nothing should be able to be caught under there.
I used a handheld 3 prong garden rake thing. Fit under and ended up being the perfect size/angle to pry it off. Other videos i found said to use a nylon strap and 2x4. I had neither so i kind of improvised lol. Took a few minutes but eventually it popped off. Careful you don't let it pop you in the face though, cuz when mine finally popped free, it came off fast. If i still had my head down there it probably would've hit me.
So I just had a friend take this apart yesterday and once AGAIN I have a towel caught under agitator. I wonder why stuff is getting stuck under there? He specifically said it was a lil loose n he tightened it more. Any input?

Not sure. Mine slid right out. The clothes underneath may be holding it down? If you have the same unit as I do then it should come out pretty easily. good luck!
Try pulling up on the clothes that are stuck. If no clothes wiggle a strap under it, where the clothes get stuck, then pull up on the strap. Worse case, tie the strap to a 3 foot 2x4 and keep flipping it.
if its the same model, it should pop off with some wiggling...maybe its got some grime in there? if its not the same model maybe there is another bolt somewhere? sorry! hope that helps!

WHY is this happening ONLY to Maytag and WHirlpool? TERRIBLE engineering thats why. This happens to me ALL the time to bedsheets and I loose them to holes etc.... There should be a law suit. I will NEVER buy a Maytag again!

I was able to use a pair of vice grips. But it would have been much better to have the right tool. If you are using the right tool then it SHOULD turn. I wish I knew more about it to get it to work for you. Maybe spray a little WD40 on the nut. that might loosen it up a bit.

As a tip: The bolt is 7/16". 11mm socket probably works because it is close to 7/16".

Its a socket (7/16” is the standard size equivalent). It may work just using vice grips. I dont think i could get mine to fit.

Once the bolt is removed you may have move the agitator quite a bit to get it to break free.
