Hey I just wanted to say thank for this video. I have actually been a professional appliance technician for 15 years and have struggled with these. Tried different kinds of penetrating oils to break it loose, use hot water/steam to try to break it loose. Even removed the whole transmission before to get it knocked out but I have never thought to try it this way.
I actually did it on a job today and it worked perfectly

This was the only video I found that addressed the “stuck “ agitator. Taking your idea I applied a little different method. I used a cargo strap. I needed a lot of pressure. As I tapped with a rubber mallet I kept adding pressure until it popped off.

I was having exactly the same problem when trying to swap out the transmission on a Kenmore 500 series. All the how-to videos show agitators/impellers lifting away like *magic* with no advice on how to deal with a stubborn case.
I used a ratcheted tie-down strap + 2x4, and it took more than a few mallet whacks. But after < 10 minutes I tugged on the top and it popped right off! You have saved us a lot of time and possibly another $70 or so for a new agitator. Thanks a ton, Rick!

It worked, but we added some vinegar about 45 minutes before we pulled, and it still took about 15 minutes of pulling and hitting until it finally broke loose. Now we're working to pull the drum out...

Outa sight! This video saved me so much time and trouble, and stopped be from cutting the agitator off with a hacksaw. I made a couple of modifications that may have made it even easier.
    (1) I used a ratchet tie-down strap with an S-shaped metal hook on each end. The strap was about 1 inch wide. I could have wrapped the strap under the agitatior like you did, but since the hooks fit, I just hooked them under the edge, and used the ratchet to tighten the strap over the board.
    (2) I used a hair dryer to apply heat to the top of the agitator where the splines are. That is the only place the agitator touches anything. I try to apply heat in any application where I want to get two parts un-stuck.
After about 5 minutes of heating and beating the agitator up and down and around and around with a rubber mallet, the agitator popped off. Great feeling! I think I'll go and enjoy me some Thanksgiving leftovers now!
Thanks for the help brother, and God bless.

I rarely comment on videos, but I just got to say: this is freakin brilliant! I had been straining and straining, and getting nowhere. I expected to throw my back out, as happens with me. I decided to check youtube and hope somebody posted a solution. I finally found this and it made sense. The mechanical advantage of the 2x4 twisting the strap (I used a 2x3. even better!) The tapping both low and high on the agitator. All perfect! This method was smart and simple. The agitator popped off with minimal effort. Much thanks for posting this video.

Once you loss the bolt turn on the washer for a while and open the washer and wiggle the agitator slowly and will come out easily. I spend more than 4 hours finally it came out easily.

Thank you! after several videos. I found yours. It gave me the confirmation I need.
I also found too. That if a 7/16" doesn't work. A 10mm does the job for that bolt. I let it sit over night with tension.
I had a 2×4 over the top of the washer also. But, I used a come-A- long strap with an old belt rapped around the agitator.😁👍

All the other videos we watched weren't helpful at all (they all showed the agitator smoothly lifting right out), after straining to get it out for over an hour and my husband worried we were going to break it, we finally found this video. My husband grabbed his rubber mallet, added some boiling water, and used a belt (we didn't have a strap near by) and after about 20 more minutes of messing with it, it popped out. Thank you so much, this video saved us.

Hey I wanted to thank you for this video. It did work for me but I was forced to do a bigger version. The 2x4, strap and rubber hammer didn't do it. I have an old mantle that's 4 inches thick by 12 inches wide. I ended up using that with an automotive floor jack on top of it and a tow strap. The jack was straining some but after two tries with that setup, the agitator popped off. That's the most stuck thing I've ever encountered! 😆

Tip: The reason the agitator won't come up easily is because of rust. Let the agitator soak in 3 gallons of white vinegar for 18-24 hours to dissolve the rust, then the agitator will come right out.

Ended up being able to use this little handheld garden claw to wedge under and after a few tries it popped off. Was the perfect size and angle to pry it off and i figured less likely to crack the plastic since pressure is a bit more evenly distributed among three prongs rather than the small pry bar i have. Couldn't believe it worked lol.

Thank you so much for this! I chipped and split the hell out of that agitator hammering it but it finally broke free. I can see exactly where it was stuck now from rust and decay.
Bad news though. I wanted to blame a kid’s toy or the wife’s bra so bad, but unfortunately it was my favorite tank top that got stuck under the agitator in the first place. Good thing I was home alone when I fixed it!

Great information. I used what is called pea line rope. It's a thin flat nylon style rope that boring crews use to pull wire through conduit. I used a smaller board and wrapped it like you did. I had also sprayed some penetrating oil in the center. I let it set for about 30 minutes and took a long 3/8 extension and placed it in the center, tapped it a few times with a hammer. It popped right up. I had been placing screw drivers under it, and some locksmith air bags. It wasn't budging. Thank you

I passed a strap through bottom of the agitator but did not board on top. Wiggled lightly from side to side while not trying to break the plastic agitator but had no luck. Got the idea to heat the top of the agitator with a blow dryer and then wiggled back and forth using the strap. It worked! The low heat setting will slightly expand the plastic helping it loosen a stubborn agitator.

Your video was great, thanks for the special note that a hammer might help to un-stick the agitator once the screw was removed. Our hearts sunk after the success of getting the bolt out with a 13" extension on the end of a drill. The agitator would not budge......until a few taps at the top with a rubber mallet. Yeah, saved us time & $$! Thank you so much!!

Just had to do this on my Maytag commercial washer. Ended up using two air wedges, a weeding tool from WalMart, a Rubber mallet, and a lot of anger.

I had to hit mine on the bottom to get it to come out. Chipped the top when I hit it at first. So definitely try hitting it on the bottom at first. But thanks for the help!

Thanks for the video! I simply sprayed some lubricant in the hole once the bolt was removed. I let it soak for about 20 minutes then tapped all around the top and bottom with a rubber mallet. It popped right out! Thank you sir!!

mine is the same exact unit and its stuck as well.
I will definitely try this method. And give a second comment on my Outcome

Well it worked after continuing to tap with rubber mallet around on the shaft of the agitator it finally broke loose.
I would have never thought to try a ratchet strap under the agitator with a 2x4 across the top.
Thanks so much for your EXTREMELY valuable video.

Mine was stuck as well, sprayed some penetrating oil (PB Blaster) in the bolt hole after removing the bolt, tapped the top of the agitator a couple times with a rubber mallet, let sit for about 30 seconds and it pulled right off. Hope this helps.

I also have a stuck agitator on a maytag a112 but my model doesn't seem to have a bolt in the middle of the agitator, unless I missed something major.
It does everything in the washing cycle except agitating. The belts seem fine but I can only turn them in one direction using my hand. And the agitator doesn't turn at all manually.
I hope I'll be able to lift the agitator off with your method.

My strap was too wide so I ended up using a shoelace tied to my strap and then a 2x3. That plus some WD-40 did the trick. Thanks!

We have been working on our Whirlpool washer for more than a week. Blood sweat and tears. Banged, Beat, tried trampoline spring tool, Citric Acid, Vinigar, Degreaser, tow strap as in the video more than a few time. It is still stuck tight. Not sure what to try next

Eventually had to use a 4 lb. sledge on the nut, but this method works. Be careful hammering the bolt, its aluminum and deforms. Put and 11mm or 12mm steel socket on it and hit that.

How do you keep the whole drum from rotating when taking the bolt out at the bottom of the Agitator? I don't have an impact driver, just a ratchet and extensions.

I had the same issue and used these steps. Unfortunately I got inpatient and put too much pressure on it and it cracked. It finally came out after beating it with rubber mallet. I bought the agitator on amazon for $60 and replaced it.

I’m glad this worked for many however we used this method and a piece of the bottom busted off. So be careful when trying this.
