- The Tusk 2Track adventure bike tires. Building a strong reputation is a good and inexpensive tire for your adventure bike. However, they are also known for being very difficult to install on your rims. Watch the video and see for yourself whether that's true or not.

those rim protectors are getting in the way
It's true those protectors make it a hassle, and they make the tire even tighter going on the rim. However, if you even look at those blue anodised rims wrong, they get scratches in them. My bike only has 300 miles on it. So I'm trying to be nice to it, at least for now. I'm not sure how that's going to work on the trail, though.
But worth the protection.

I use cut-up pieces of windshield washer fluid bottles. Just thick enough to protect the rims, but not impede the tire bead. I use 2 or three and move them after i get that section of bead over the rim edge.

Everyone and their dog puts tubes in the hard way lol.
Put a little air in the tube then put it in the tire before you put the first bead on the rim and the first thing you do mounting the tire is get the valve stem through the hole in the rim. After you get the valve stem in the rim with the nut loose on it start prying the tire onto the rim. This saves a ton of time and aggravation.

Mine separated on the inside and caused me quite the ordeal. At about 3,800 miles all on road at 35psi road pressure. They just gave me a refund and they are sending me $100 visa prepaid card for my trouble. Your fight with the tire was what i experienced. The tire did awesome on the road and they were doing great for wear also. I was really excited to see them offroad but it didn’t work out. The limited height of the sidewalk makes it like a dirt bike 19” rim with the stiffness of an 18” which makes it a bear. Unless they redesigned the sidewall I won’t repurchase. I had complete confidence in my self rescue ability until this tire. Regardless, RockymountainMC took care of me and I will continue to use them. I’m just Leary about using that specific tire on the rear of the T7. I have used Motoz Adventures and Rallz and thy have been great. If it weren’t for the mounting issues I would buy the 2 track in a heartbeat even with my issues.
How would you feel when you completed the fit you realized you fitted it in the wrong direction, I've done that before!

That would be catastrophic, probably have to walk away for a while. I've done that too, but not on such a difficult tire. I triple checked this one! Thanks for commenting from down under.

Ran into the same thing. If it goes out in the wild, it would be a miracle putting it back on myself. But, conversely, it may be stiff enough to limp out a few miles. Guess we will find out.....

LOL i have done that on mountain bike tires, then took it off then did it again. Its kinda funny with mountain bike tires, if I did that with this thing I would be devastated lol.
Just got these installed on my T7. What a pain. I didn't want to deal with the changing tubes on the trail so I converted the rear to tubeless. Hopefully it holds up.
Yeah, I hope the tubeless system works out. I just put the stock Pirelli tubes back in. I'm crossing my fingers 🤞
Yeah my buddy and I installed these over the weekend and we’re such a pain! But, there’s no dealership to help fix a flat on a BDR. 👍👍
True that! My rear tire was on the recall list. They sent me a replacement, but I don't feel like changing it because of the difficulty. I have some ideas on how to make it easier in the future. 🤔
@@CrustyCycle9317 yeah same here. It “could” loose some knobs. We off road with a group of 12-20. No problems with it. And it’s 4500 miles deep with some of these guys!!
@rockmanADV My buddy and I both have the recalled tires, and yeah, we're just running em. Only 400 mi deep so far.

@@CrustyCycle9317 yeah I read the comments on your recall vid. China, CHYNA, I just want a good tire. Two guys we ride with have over 4K miles on the rear and it’s acting like a Motoz!!! Yeah they’re recall tires but it’s holding ground.
I have a rear 2 track this spring to mount. Will see how it goes !

@camerontrudeau4974 hopefully the sidewall softens as you get some miles on them. It's all about the drop center. We can do it 💪

Key to getting the stiff sidewall tires on, is to let them bake in the sun for about an hour if you have warmer sunny weather. They go on much easier. Also Yamaha tire lube works wonders.

How confident would you feel about doing that with the spoons and tools you carry on your bike?
I tried mounting a set with my trail tools and decided they're not doable. I'm giving them away to one of my friends that has tubeless rims which I'm sure they'll be perfect for.
Yeah, I don't know. Hopefully, I don't get a flat? Definitely a legitimate concern...
You talk about drop center but you don't use it, get a bead buddy

Clamp to put the bead in the middle of the rim and Baja tool no pinch.

Still need to put tire in drop center across from where you are working.
Yes, on the underside of the tire. One viewer commented that he uses 1×2 blocks between the tire and the rim. Another said he held the tire in the drop center with a ratchet strap while he pulled it onto the rim.
Completely Agree.... a couple more clamps across from where you are working to put the bead in the drop center. Is this the first time you changed a tire?
@blairweiss I know it doesn't look like it In the video, but the tire is completely in the drop center all around the top side of where i'm trying to spoon the tire onto the rim. The trick is keeping the bottom of the tire in the drop center while you're trying to install the top because the tire bead is shipped to you stretched to about six inches wide, and very stiff. Had you been standing there at the time, I would have been more than happy to let you demonstrate your tire changing prowess. 😀
If these tires didn't have a reputation for being extremely difficult to install, I wouldn't have made the video. Buy a set and give it a go!

What if you use c clamps to keep it in the drop center?
I tried that to get the bottom of the tire back in the drop center while I was spooning on the top, and I couldn't get it to come off the bead, dang it. I did another set on a 950 KTM about a week later and it wasn't much smoother. I guess i'm figuring out my technique.

You're not the first person to say that. Hopefully, the carcass will soften up after some miles?
My front was way easier than the rear. I ran ratchet strap through my rear and tightened it down so it would hold both sides in the drop center. worked pretty good. My rear tire is the 150 on a tubeless wheel.

the front was so much easier than the rear, the worst part about the front was getting the tube in and through the valve hole. I have yet to get the rear installed lol. still fighting it.
@Jacksquatch69 maybe stuff a couple pieces of 1x2 on the bottom side, between the tire and rim, to keep the tire from climbing out of the drop center while you spoon on the top side? I don't know if that makes sense, but it was a suggestion from Kyle Bradshaw that he left in the comments. I haven't tried it yet.
@@CrustyCycle9317 I got it installed I cut a bunch of little strips of wood and rammed them between the tire and the rim to hold it in the rim center all the way around ( on both sides too lol ). I have no idea how I would change this thing out in the woods haha.

What a pain in the ass this tire was to mount! It was tough on my Rabaconda too... I needed two levers at the end. Man they are stiff! 9:00 "make your life easier"... get a different tire ;)
I did a second set a week later, and it was quite a bit easier. But I still ended up using clamps to manipulate the bead into the drop center. I still haven't ridden on them much, but hopefully, the performance is decent. Then yeah, maybe different tires, next time .
@@CrustyCycle9317 overall they perform really well on smooth pavement and all types of dirt. Only downsides are the hard non-flexy sidewalls transmit road imperfections through the chassis and they are slippery in cold wet weather. Overall, great value tires.
@manybikes Thanks for the input on their performance, that's encouraging. And I have heard that they can be a little harsh. My initial impression in my backyard trails, was that they packed easy, and we're all over the place. Gotta give them a chance, though. It was greasy out, and i'm new to riding a 450 lb street bike in the dirt! I think you're right, though, they're gonna be just fine.
I just mounted the front getting the tube in was the worst part that took me 2 hours screwing with it. Finally I put the tube in with the tire but even still got the valve stem in crooked and it tore and is leaking after I got the tire on... sigh...

I've got two more to mount, the recall replacements. I've got some ideas how to make it easier, but not for a while. My buddy and I are gonna chew up those recalled tires for a while first. Glad you got it on there though!
You’re having such a hard time because you need to keep the other side of the tire in the middle not up on the bead
You are absolutely right. The tire is shipped to you extremely wide at the bead and super stiff. It's very difficult to keep the bottom of the tire off the bead while mounting. One viewer suggests placing 1×2 blocks underneath to keep the tire from jumping on the bead (like it does).
@@CrustyCycle9317 yha I just bought one for my 2023 wr250f and I already know it’s going to to be a fight I was just looking to see how hard of a time others have had I think I’ll just take my wheel off the bike and take it to my buddy’s garage at least he’s got better tools then I do to get the job done
@rezkidgamingyt4725 For your 250, you probably have the D Sports. But i've heard that those can be a bugger also. If you've got a guy, definitely use him!
Use a bead buddy
I absolutely need one of those, It will take the third tire on out of the equation. Thanks for the suggestion.
I used one when installing these tires on my T7 and it started to scratch my rims, had to use a rubber piece under the bead buddy. Might 3d print something similar that won't damage my rims.
@minds4game yeah, some type of bead buddy set-up makes sense would help.
