    Hygienists make more as they are producers. Assistants are the backbone of the office. I am so happy I chose to be an assistant, even if I make less. I'd rather be busy doing different things than cleaning teeth or talking about OHI every day! Every person has different choices, however like you said, it depends on what you really want to be doing. I hardly ever sit down, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

      I agree! Great comment thank you. When I was an assistant I worked my butt off! If I was sick for a day..the office was a mess the next :)

    Dental assistants can get taken advantage of even when they are doing a great job and are good team players. Every doctor and every dental clinic is different and will treat you differently. Working as a dental assistant doesn’t mean you will be treated with respect every where you go. Unfortunately a lot of clinics in my personal experience will take advantage of your hard work and belittle you when they get a chance even infront of patients. There are many doctors who are rude and disrespectful. I know now why a lot of dental assistants are leaving this industry. Also there is no job security here they can fire you for no reason. This job needs to be unionized for our protection. Many things have been dismissed in this video. Once again just because dental assisting isn’t for someone, it clearly doesn’t mean they aren’t doing a great job and have all the qualifications that make a good dental assistant.

      Don't put up with that type of treatment. They can only do what you will allow. If you get treated badly. Walk out!!

    Think she forgot about the caring aspect of being a dental assistant. I've been told that one of the things a dental assistant needs to do is put patients at ease and make them feel comfortable, as many people are terrified to visit the dentist. So many dental assistants will just sit there and watch patients instead of trying to help calm their nerves.

    No hygienist had better ever EXPECT me to clean and set up their room, bring their patient back, etc. I am a team player, and assistant of 37 years, and I am NOT a hygiene assistant, I am a doctor's assistant. There are lots of hygiene assistants. I am not one. I have a full schedule myself. I see upwards of 10-15 patients a day, all on my own. You could not pay me enough money to take x-rays, and clean teeth all day long!! The office where I worked the longest, which was 20 years, the hygienists cleaned and bagged their own instruments, and we assistants did our own. We even had different ultrasonics. If hygiene needed help, and we COULD help them, we would. Likewise, if we needed help, and they could, they would. But, assistants were never EXPECTED to wait on hygienists hand and foot. That truly is NOT the role of an assistant...to be the hygienists gofer. If you, as a hygienist need an assistant, ask your doctor to hire one for you!

    • @dentalelle
      @dentalelle  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I respectfully disagree. The offices I've worked in, we all help out, even the dentist. It's not expected of anyone but we all help out. If someone flat out refused to help me if I needed it and they were the only one with down time, they wouldn't be seen as a team player in my books. I'm not expected to help anyone in an office being a restorative hygienist but I would in a heart beat. Although I'm sure a lot of people agree with you so thank you for commenting.

    It's not a good job if you ARE a team worker: your going to break your back and you will get taken advantage of. Your not helping your constantly picking up slack and keep in mind, most people are not team workers. SCHOOL: do not, i repeat DO NOT GO TO ASSISITING SCHOOL unless its short and dirt cheap. People talking about tuition over 15k... your not even going to make that back your first year! Find a short program where you can get your xray licence and find an office willing to train. Do not go into any debt to get into assisiting as your going to go into debt working a job that does not make ends meet. The problem is not the job its the dentist. And people in treatment coordination learn real fast when a patient needs something, just like a dds needs an assistant, they want to pay the absolute lowest they can. Assisiting is only feasable if you plan on being an office manager or if you will be in a hygiene program before you start to really assisit. But hygiene rules.

    I've been a dental assistant for 6 years and half time student. I recently finished all my pre reqs for hygienist. Like she says the money is good as a dental assistant when you are fresh out of high school. But now that I have to pay all the bills and rent then to assistant is not enough.that's why I pursued the goal to become a dental hygienist. And possibly further my education to become a dentist who knows.
    As a dental assistant for example in the Los Angeles area you'll make enough money to get by pay your bills and if you get lucky maybe save a hundred bucks a month.
    This is coming from someone that makes $24 an hour as a dental assistant.
    I know $24 an hour is somewhat a lot for some but life in Los Angeles is getting too expensive.

    I love my career dental nursing is an awesome career but I am emotionally and physically drained from working in a dental management where work ppl treat you wrong by not having to listen to you or not giving you a chance to explain yourself if somethings happens at work. This is when u as an individual feel trapped and leads to depression and anxiety. Being a nice person but ppl start taking advantage of your kindness by simply using you. I have started distancing myself at work and talk to those colleagues who are friendly to me and even if others are rude I do still talk but I do not have anything more more to say apart from hi how are you. Dentalelle ahhhh I had no idea. The hygienist here make at least $10 more than assistants. In some private practice here the dr will have their assistants full time and the Hyg. Part time or the Hyg. Will almost “rent” the space, like a hair stylist in a salon and may have to travel from Doctor to doctor. The Hyg. Field is a very saturated where I’m at because there are several schools in my area so it’s harder for new hygienist to get hired full time. Where I work we have full time hygienist because we are in a larger group practice.but That’s another reason why I choose asst. over Hyg. I needed job security and I like working with specialist too, In the group practice we have orthodontist,endodontist, oral surgeon, pedodontist, and none of them need a hygienist. Job security was most important to me.

      LPN route. But I'm in California so LVN/LPN gets paid between $37-45 an hour. I'm a rda and been in the field for 10 years. Max pay in the bay area is $35, but this is 5-7years under your belt. Rda hours are not steady at all. Most offices work 32 hours a week. Lpn/lvn guaranteed 40hours plus over time. I know this because I have family members in the field as a lvn/rn.

      @@djdjsvh7522 correct. I forgot to mention that in my post. Yeah usually LVN/LPN is going to be phased out in hospitals as the requirements are changed. The talk is been there the longest. I know LPN/LVNs working 2 jobs 60 hours a week and making $100+ k a year. Being an RDA and a dental assistant in the field for 10 years, it’s hard to make $60k because hours are not guaranteed when many offices close down early due to the lack of patients not showing up, etc. plus benefits are horrible. I wish I can go back in time to choose LVN/LPN because I had both choices on the table from my entrance exam.

I observed everyone's roles and after a while i knew it was what i wanted to do. I also know people straight out of high school with NO work experience and they jumped into becoming a dental assistant without realizing how hands on it is, the size of the work load, and the level of communication that goes on since you are spending a lot of time 1 on 1 with patients. I did not struggle with any of it because i came from a background of customer service and felt comfortable explaining and communicating effectively with the rest of the team as well as with patients. Everything you said makes no since to me. Your basically saying dental assisting is not for someone who refuses to be a freaking over worked under paid slave. Have you ever thought about the fact that it's just not fair for one person to work their ass off when everyone else is being lazy. That is what causes a person to burn out over time! I know personally from 17 years of both clinical and administrative work. Each Assistant should be cross trained, for front and back office, mandatory, no exceptions

    • @dentalelle
      @dentalelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for your feedback. I think it depends on where you live. Maybe the office too? Where I am, assistants love their jobs because they can multitask (I loved being an assistant personally!). It just depends if you like multitasking and helping others. If you don't, assisting isn't for you.

    I get what you’re saying, but to say that the assistant has no one to go to if they have questions is NOT true. You can always ask the dentist, so that is the worst advice you could possibly give. That’s how mistakes happen. Even if the dentist needed advice he would consult with other dentists. Just because you tried doing everything else yourself doesn’t mean that’s the right way to do it. Perhaps if you had asked for help you would not have felt like you were overworked.

      Runo U.R. Mm I didn’t realize I said that, I’ll have to rewatch my video so see what I meant. But, from what I’ve seen..it’s not always easy to ask for help, some don’t feel comfortable

      It's really not very intelligent to not ask for help. One of the smartest things you can do, is ask for help. Better to ask, and know the right thing to do; than not ask, get it wrong, and cause a catastrophe. Early in my career, one of the best dentists in St. Louis, told me this "There's no such thing as a stupid question. If you need to know something, you need to know." @@dentalelle

    The dentists are very rude, staff lack communication, they are very rude! This is an egotistical field.
    I’ve had cotton rolls thrown at me, called stupid, told I don’t fit the demographic criteria because I have tattoos

      @dentalelle that's really surprising but even when I get my title, I still doubt your right about me getting the job. I have a better chance in getting accepted into the Miami Dolphins organization before I get accepted into a clinic. It's like clinics always throw guys under the bus.
