  • Fixed our John Deere rider that was surging by repalacing the gas line. The video does not show how to replace the line but it's not very difficult. Just wanted to pass along that sonetimes old gas lines can cause problems.

    You have decent trouble shooting skills, but aside from the outrageous expense of a new carb you now know what didn’t cause the trouble and any day we learn stuff is a good day !
    plus, you have a spare new carb that you will not be able to find when you finally need to change out the old one 👍🏼

    On an older mower, the fuel line can shrink, both lengthwise and diameter, especially if the line was put on tight to begin with.
    Best to hang the line a little loose when installing, to allow for shrinkage...it will only use an extra inch or so of tubing.
    I noticed on one of my Husqvarna mowers, the line near the tank connection is a little tight, and the mower has only been used for two seasons.
    The tubing could be a year or two older than the mower to start with.

    Happened to me once on my JD L-120. I found that dust had gotten into the little pinhole breather in the fuel cap! That's all it took to create a vacuum and caused the engine to starve for fuel and surge. The fix was to clean out the pin hole with a tooth pick!! Yup that simple... So now every once in a while, I'll stick a toothpick in the gas cap pin hole just to make sure it's clean.

    Had a 20 hp twin Kohler same problem from new, only happened occasionally, could not be fixed. Finally discovered it happened when gas was low. Running tank over half full no problem. Off season I installed a new gas hoses , found a plastic swirl from drilling a hole at the factory, in the tank fitting.

    I have the exact same lawn tractor and it's doing the exact same thing. It will run for about 30-40 minutes and start to sputter and then die. I just had $200 worth of work done on it and that didn't fix the problem. Just watched your video and will buy a new fuel hose and replace the old one from the fuel tank to the fuel filter. Question; how long of a fuel hose did you have to purchase and was it difficult to get into that tight space to remove the old one and run the new line? Thanks for the video.

    • @anthonya824
      @anthonya824 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this question is a little old now, but for the community's benefit:
      I have a Craftsman mower with a similar B&S engine and I needed about 5' 6" of fuel line.
      Also, I removed the body of the mower (foot deck? not sure how to refer to it) in order to take out the fuel tank and re-route the fuel line. I can see the Deere in this video is configured slightly differently; I'm also a novice, so your mileage may vary.

    My LA100 was surging, run maybe 20 feet, sputter, run maybe 20 feet, sputter, finally died and wouldn't crank again unless that battery was recharged.
    I changed the (1) fuel pickup (that thing you describe coming off the gas tank), (2) the fuel line from tank to fuel filter, (3) the fuel filter, (4) the line from fuel pump to carburetor. Having done all that, the mower ran beautifully for about 20 minutes. Then it started surging again, same old same old.
    So I did all you did and more. Any other ideas?
