Important Correction: EndeavourOS (Based on Arch) is known for it's awesome GUI Installer making it easy to get an Arch Based system setup (compared to the traditional way of installing Arch Linux via commands/the wiki). However, I failed to mention that these days, it's MUCH EASIER to install Arch linux due to the official Archinstall package since 2021. So no, Arch Linux is no longer as challenging to setup as it used to be and I was NOT AWARE of Archinstall when I made this video. Thank you to those who mentioned Archinstall in the comments!
In my experience I've found archinstall a little buggy and it doesn't seem to work when I try to use it :( To be fair, my standard setup might be a little more complex than the standard setup so I guess it might work better for more standard setups?
@@chonkydog6262 SerenityOS would be cool, but, its a tough one because there are no official releases with version numbers I can quote for the episode or mention well in the intro. a couple notes, KDE does also have multiple desktops, and most GNOME users add extensions to it, including the very popular "Dash to dock" which adds the dock to the desktop kinda like macOS!
EndeavourOS has a more visually appealing GUI for noobs compared the Anarchy Linux (she tried out 6 years ago) installer, so she prefers EndeavourOS's installer :)
Firefox wasn't showing in the apps list because for some reason, the modern version of gnome REMOVES apps from your apps list if you add them to your favourites (the bottom dock). I have no idea which developer thought that was a brilliant idea. Yes you can use a third party extension to bring it back, that's not the point. It shouldn't be counter-intuitive so as to need an extension in the first place.
I think the idea is that you're supposed to use the activity screen as an app launcher, type "fir" there and you should have Firefox showing. At least I think that's the idea. You shouldn't really need the apps list with how it's meant to be used. And that's the strength and worst flaw of GNOME : it's meant to be used a certain way. If that way works with how you use things, it's awesome. Else, it's awful. Hence why such a divisive feedback towards GNOME.
Smart lady! Love the way she handled the first exposure to GRUB... "If we've got gnomes we may as well have grubs because they are usually in the garden together" brilliant and so innocently funny! Also live the way she trashed your awful example of 3/4 people people coming in to borrow your computer and he came up with a sensible scenario of keeping an eye on the stockmarket etc. Hahahaha. Great Video! Usually a Debian based Mint Zorin PopOS! would be the kinder 'first experience' so she did an excellent job at having Arch thrust upon her. Well done both of you.
Thanks, Diana is known for her funny remarks in our videos. One time we did a video where we setup a fake virtual machine for a real hacker to connect to. If you want a graphical manager for packages on Arch-based systems, you can install pamac which supports both regular packages and AUR packages :] As for Gnome, there are extensions to modify the desktop behavior like keeping the dock visible at all times, or having a system monitor in the top bar, etc. The original idea is to have a sleek and minimal desktop environment without distractibles so that it allows you to focus on your work -- that's why the dock hides when you're not on the Activities screen, for example :] Great content as always :]
Pretty cool to see someone installing "arch" easily. A good newbie tip would be to install something like pamac, so the person can install packages in a nice Gui interface (even from the AUR)
"Imagine having to install Arch Linux using the text based method" she's literally done that very thing in the past 😭😭 by the end of that video Arch went from her "arch enemy" to the "Diana Perfect Operating System"
Ah nice OS its my daily driver.. I know how to install Arch the "hard" way but is just so nice having a quick installer to pop in to install on everything. Only two OS's ran in my house is Debian and EndeavourOS. Debian is my Home lab with docker and run my media server and home assistant and AI on and EndeavourOS runs all the other PCs in my house
It would be interesting to see Diana configure Hyprland to her liking, with Waybar or whatever. Might be pretty difficult though, but it would be very interesting to see!
3:01 I think the reason it didn’t save inside “Documents” is because you have to double click to then go save it there, otherwise, it’s not registered as saving it there and defaults to saving it to Where you currently are. I’m guessing that’s how it goes, since a few seconds back, you can see it deselects when she begins to type in “Saved File”
EndeavourOS is one of the best ways to try Arch Linux. I was able to install the EndeavourOS Cassini_Nova XFCE DE on a old laptop 2011 and it works really good. I run the KDE Plasma EndeavourOS on some newer PC's very good distro of Arch.
hey thanks for the hint on the Desktop Chooser window.. i will adjust the info text, and think about to make it easier to click on the Desktop with Icons .. also not sure if this is possible but should be ;)
About installing Arch. It's now a lot easier with the included Archinstall file. Granted, it is still a terminal script and it's a very technical installer, but you don't have to do it manually anymore. It's what got me to use Arch.
Plasma is always my way to go, it can be very minimalistic on the screen and it has a really professional touch to it, I think. On the other hand I hate Gnome for its waste of space.

I'll see how I go emulating them at some point further in the future, I was having trouble with getting Amiga setup recently in a cancelled video on Instant Music for Amiga from 1986 which put me off :P If only Internet Archive wasn't messed up it could be run right here with no setup: archive.org/details/Instant_Music_1986_Electronic_Arts
The camera filming us covered up the firefox icon in the dock, I couldn't see it from where I was sitting, editing this video I looked back and noticed how silly I looked :P
I hope EndeavourOS will come up with a GUI for pacman/AUR, because Arch suffers with GUI package managers, all of them either don't support AUR, or do it poorly with half of packages not being able to be installed, or UI is just more confusing than even CLI
Endeavour OS is my favourite, but i would not offer gnome vanilla to linux beginners. I love gnome but there are good reasons that ubuntu, Zorin and Pop OS do heavily modify gnome. Desktop icons and dash-to-dock are minimum for newbies to appreciate gnome. Cinnamon may be a good choice, as KDE large scale of settings may be overwhelming also.
