Girl we started our first year teaching elementary at the literal same time! I'm in CA, but I first student taught with high schoolers and taught full time TK-5 elementary music in early August of 2017. Everything you said I was totally remembering how I felt that first week of teaching. It went so fast that I could hardly think, the management was so tough and I was TIRED. Totally remembering all the feels just now. Crazy how time flies, 4 years already!

Thanks for this video. I'm trying to decide whether or not to transition to teaching music. I've been teaching grades two through six for 15 years. Music is my passion, and I'm hoping I can teach it.

Good luck! Start practicing piano and music theory, those were the hardest courses in college for most music ed majors!

It is so great to find your channel. I am a k-3 music teacher in IL that just started year 21! Kindergarten music is its own beast. Spending time going over procedures helps tremendously and is time well spent. Plus spending lots time on a song, cover lots of different elements with the same tune. We celebrated ending our first music class in k, 1st, 2nd with the If You're Kid Dance Around video on TH-cam.
Your ESL kids may actually be more comfortable in music, since all the kids are essentially learning a new language in music, reading rhythms is it's own language that doesn't require understanding English.

Wish I have found your channel when I was teaching elem. music. I had all the problems and more while teaching, and sounded like you did very well with them on your first week and first year with elem. music. Good job!

Great class room! I love your style. I am going back to school I find out that education is very important in this world we’re living in. I’m majoring in Education at a community college to become a teacher 👨‍🏫 . I learned American Sign Language in high school and I am so in love with it with kids. I can imagine how my class room looks👀

Ha! Kindergarten is like "herding cats" in the beginning of the year. First graders are starting to "get" school. Don't underestimate the "honeymoon". Know what you expect and make sure the kids know what you expect. Practice procedures then practice again until it's right. I'm starting my 25th year teaching elementary music on Tuesday. I take pics of each kid for my seating chart. Really helps learn names. What do you use for a "quiet" signal?
It's frustrating when classes that have music on certain days miss so many music classes.
Sounds like you're on the right track! Congrats for surviving week one!

thank you! and our school has a school wide quiet signal (zero level voices, so we hold up a zero) which is helpful!

What are "exit slips" by the mirror? How are they utilized?

I used them a few times for the older students to see what they retained from the lesson

I am struggling to make my music classrooms look pretty. I am a first-year traveling music teacher, teaching 3rd-6th (flutophpne, band, orchestra) at three schools! Lol. Any tips for simple decorations?

I would love to teach my students the "How Far I'll Go ". But it has to be an easy chord version. What arrangement did you use? Do you have a link or pdf you can share?

How do you set the students up for using the "Calming Corner"? You must have set it up for them for that student to go to the CC.

Yupp! I can do a whole video on it, but essentially it's not supposed to be a punishment. When kids are visibly upset I give them choice to go there and calm down or some will put themselves in it because they're better at self regulating

I've been teaching elementary general music K-6 for 17 years. The struggles you had this week I have had many years ago. Things will get better with those tougher classes. Check out we.wholebraibteaching.org. I think you might like "Scoreboard". I use many things from that website and they work so well!
