There are some areas where I wish the Thai government would lighten up. Crime like theft, abuse, drug dealing, assault, etc. are not one of those. They are sending a clear message that the criminal laws should be respected. From another angle, I just can't fathom the mindset of someone visiting another country and stealing from and assaulting local people. Is it the alcohol? What's wrong with these people?

Chances are you will get away with it more in the US, but definitely not in Thailand.

The difference between criminal and civil laws are night and day. My friend as a waitress helped her ex when he needed to go for a life saving operation to the sum of 80000 baht on the promise of prompt repayment with interest upon the sale of a non existing property in Europe. He also begged for money to buy food and pay rent with the same promise to repay all he borrowed. He used her motor bike and caused panel damages bent levers etcetera. Total owing 126000. The cops aren't interested, the lawyer says even if she wins her case in court there's no guarantee even if ordered by the court that she will get her money back. I helped retrieve her motor bike because he wasn't going to return it. This man also has been kicked out of his rooms for running up unpaid rent. Thai law is weak in this area. This is the sort of dirt that needs to be sent packing. Three years later he still promises to pay next week. I think he should be charged with embezzlement.

Just got back from Thailand. I'm 66 years old and have to keep my neck on a swivel when I am in the USA. When I was in Thailand I didn't worry about being mugged or attacked at all. Spending my last week in Bangsaen it was wonderful, not many farangs.

Do you think it’s an increase in foreigners behaving badly or do you think it’s the same as it has always been but the Thai press seems to have an anti foreigner attitude which has led to all this focus? After all there is worse crimes than this being done by Thai people against Thai people all over Thailand.

I asked the same question. After 16 years here though, I must say: there is a genuine "spike" in the number of these kinds of incidents. Even prior to social media (which I was in Thailand to experience, albeit more briefly than I would have liked) these types of stories would have had a lot of traction, especially in the Thai press which would have bled over into the Western press. So, objectively, I think yes this problem has gotten worse. I think it stems from the fact that the governments of the world treated their people as criminals for at least 2 years by putting them on house arrest the ostensible purpose being "disease exists" and this is one of the byproducts of that incredibly awful practice.

@@IntegrityLegalThailand I agree with you here. The behavior of a certain percentage people en masse seems to have grown edgy.... post lockdowns. However, It's sad to see some level of declining respect for being a guest in The Kingdom of Thailand (and exactly what that means regarding observing laws an cultural norms) and this poor behavior.

@@IntegrityLegalThailand you make a good point on the byproducts of lockdown, and have read elsewhere that has been a huge increase in abuse of airline staff by passengers post plague lockdowns.

Too many tourists? I think you have discussed this before, how many are too many? AND, if there are too many and there's an actual criminal toleration point, then why are we building more in tourist destinations that are already overcrowded? What is "overcrowded", is this what it looks like, aren't these the symptoms? Bad tourists are a tax burden needing to be paid for by someone.

Thailand has a robust tourism industry if that's what you're asking. What's happening here is Thailand, like many developing countries with robust tourism often attracts sexpats.

People come to Thailand, look around at the seemingly anything goes attitude (that you can witness every day in person or in the news) and start thinking they can do the same. It is a bit foolish. In regards to the subject at hand, stealing is still frowned upon in Thailand and you will held to account if guilty.
