    He and JJ were two of my heroes when I was in high school and college. I was a trombonist and just discovering jazz in the 1970's. Man, I miss those days.

      When you're missing those days you've got to pick up the 'bone, a little oil on the slide, and close your eyes and just play for yourself for a half hour or an hour and a half. It will be your own special time travel machine.

    I saw him at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney in 1972, the Giants of Jazz tour, with Barney Kessel, Jim Hall and Sonny Stitt & the Preservation Hall Band. I still remember the details of that night almost half-century ago.

    It is sad the Kai Winding died at only 60 years old. His collaboration with JJ Johnson was the best.

    I heard Kai play when he was with the Stan Kenton band. A great trombone musician!

    What a inspiration to others. Both he and surprisingly...Bob Flannigan of the Four Freshmen inspired me to learn trombone many moons ago. Many years ago I transitioned to organ, but I have fond memories of both of these artists.

    What a cooking swinging chart with a tight knit band! WOW! It goes without saying that Kai is at his usual superlative quintessential awesomeness! HE is gone BUT HE will remain in our hearts and minds forever!

    Excellent trombone solo! He was one of the all time best. (introduced by the great Sonny Stitt, wish he could have solo also on this )

    Is this the tour where Monk didn't talk to Blakey because he thought he was too ugly? One of those legendary stories.

    • @lacroixphilippe5433
      @lacroixphilippe5433 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw him in this tour 1971 in Lyon, with Art Blakey and Gillespie. I did not know anything about trombone. He made love this instrument for ever. Gillespie was tremendous. Monk obviously did not feel like playing...

    • @TheMikkelausen
      @TheMikkelausen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. He didn’t talk at all except for two words or so because he thought Blakey and McKippon was too ugly. Gillespie was a little jealous during the tour because Monk received long ovations and really good reviews and Gillespie had proclaimed himself leader of the band even though there was not supposed to be one :D (I prefer Monk over Gillespie any day).
