Stitt as per usual nailing every chord change with the most melodic and creative lines. The most perfect saxophonist of all time
Monk's solo's magnificent. Wow!
We have common ground there
Monk's solo is just magnificent
Serious props to McKibbon and Blakey here for their rock steady timekeeping.
Sonny stitt! Incredible! Everyone sounds amazing
Stitt's saxophone solo was truly incredible, definitely my favorite part. Truly admirable in every way. 🎉
I can't believe I never got to meet my grandfather!! Al McKibbon...if any of my relative see this please reach out :) This makes my heart warm!! :-)
The Great And Brilliant "Big AL MCKIBBON"!!
I think his was the best solo there -except for Dizzy himself
Hello, I'm Al Mckibbon great-granddaughter. I'm reaching out to you.
I did a lot of work on Al's house in Los Angeles. we were good friends. he called me his son. I had many great meals there. I have many memories. His daughter was 17 at that time. Rudy at 615 four 78 8five 84

Jeepers Creepers ! This is so good.
Well l have been in love (in my head) with Sonny Stitt for 45 years. LOL
I am Danish and I have been to Tivoli many times in my life, but I would happily trade them all if I could have been there on this very special night.
You will never, ever see anything like this, again, PERIOD!!!
monk without the Hat ,very rare :)
Yeah, I thought there was something missing ...
Wow, that was a time where you could still gather a handful of the absolute top jazz stars on the same bandstand in a rather obscure corner of the world, my hometown incidentally.
They have all passed away by now.
Marvelous solo's especially the trombone, I wonder why.
so near, so far... Giants for ever
No dislike! All right in the world
This lineup is seriously crazy. Absolutely as good as it gets. Somebody tell me there’s more from this concert or Tour or whatever it was…
There's a DVD of a concert in Copenhagen 1971 called (of all things) "Giants Of Jazz Copenhagen 1971", released in 2009.
Happy hunting; I myself am right now trying to track down a copy.
great tune
I sure have seen Dizzy live, but wow I never imagined Art Blakey looked like that... what a shock... I love it!
You should check out the documentry ,,straight no chaser,, , produced by clint eastwood.
@@marcelsperner8486 will do! Thanks for the tip
Blakey’s image changed a lot over the years. At some point in his career became a devout muslim (as did quite a few jazzers) and adopted a muslim name, although he didn’t try to change his name professionally. I guess this might have had an influence on his hair style snd dress sense in later life!
They recorded an album in England released in 1972. The Giants of Jazz. I bought it a couple of years later. Sonny Stitt is featured on Everything Happens to Me. Great performances by everyone. I was fortunate to have seen all of these guys, although not together.
I'm enjoying this teachers 😍✨
Sometimes I wonder "where will we end up in this world where there is no longer even a direction?" But I know that at some point they were change, a necessary and historic change. Although there is no fixed direction, I know that there is a future, and as long as the taste for good music and the feeling of it does not die. I want to continue in it. Greetings from beautiful Mexico.
Possibly one of the greatest bass solos I've heard! Never been aware of McKibbon...I'll look out
If you like that solo you should also check out Ali & Frazier with Oscar Peterson and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. .
Excelentes obras me encantó Gillespie
Music is universal, just needs an open mind 👍
The Trombone man is killing too!
Yeah man Kai Winding was amazing. Hes super underrated for what he did for jazz
@@icemann6017 he most certainly was underrated. Splendid player.
Thanks to the publisher for putting this musical treasure on youtube!
Thelonious Monk : finger nails like beautiful Pearls dancing over the Piano keys...Amazing!
This Giants of Jazz world tour was historic, the closing of an age, in many ways. An age when giants still walked the earth. Gillespie, Monk, Blakey, Stitt, each reaching their full greatness. Masters and griots. Truth is jazz was in such economic dire straights in the early ‘70s that each of these four all-time greats suspended his regular working band to fill halls with this all star ensemble. I cut my teeth as an adolescent listening to the live double album they cut. The greatest thing about TH-cam is being able to watch them too!
Can you imagine kids like myself growing up in and around this everyday ? And being a musician as well and playing what they did not want us to play Rock & Roll. Can anyone on this feed can imagine living and growing up everyday listening to this ? I never New what I was seeing until I got older and realize these are the same guys that play with the family the same ones who was just over at the house the same guys kids we were running around with. I my family are still friends with some of their kids, today. Amazing musicians.
adore this song!!!
For me one of the miraculous partnerships in jazz is that between Monk and Art Blakey. It seems to be generally acknowledged that Monk was fading by this period yet Bu is still able to set off enough rockets under him to rouse him to his perverse, acerbic former glory.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I had the pleasure of working with the bass player Al McKibbon in1994 in Pasadena /near LosAngeles in1994 . What a super gentleman. Al bought an incredible bass violin which had a lion curved into the top scroll piece of the bass . I played Sax with a guitarist ,as part of a grand opening of the Target Store on Colorado Blvd. At Hudson Ave. I wish I had a picture of that gig , Al was a blast to perform with
@@geminisax6115 ...I lived in Pasadena for eight years.
I like how Dizzy Gillespie saved his solo for the last, and the way he starts out especially.... Man, I wish I got to hear him live, maybe meet him. My number one favorite jazz musician probably, although I have lots of favorites.
Or second to last, my favorite solos are the trumpet and bass/ Gillespie and McKibbon solos
Saw him at the Boojum Tree in Phoenix just a couple of years after this was recorded. Hearing jazz live is the way to go, for sure.
I was lucky enough to see him in mid 80's at a Jacksonville Jazz Festival, best one ever in my opinion. Always wanted a trumpet like his.
David Nelms His trumpet sure is cool. Don't see people with trumpets like that often anymore, though Christian Scott is a great player who uses a "bent" trumpet
My younger brother recently passed and l used to love when he told the story of meeting Diz in passing at our Jazz Fest. Mr. Gillespie was cool, regular and funny 😄😄 They ending with a high FIVE.
The bass solo i funky as hell!
An Art Blakey press roll is like a cold shower, when you really need one.
Great. great piece! Real joy.
Jjjjjjjjjhhhhhhhhh
Está pieza musical me transmitió mucha paz y tranquilidad, excelentes músicos!!! :))
I was privileged to meet both him and Ella's Fitzgerald back stage in Berlin Germany. She signed a dollar bill for me with my name on it. ❤️ her
Me gusto mucho, muy buena interpretación
Good to hear this Dizzy's reworking of Harry Warren's great song "Jeepers Creepers".
Stitt is very close to Lester here, playing considerably simpler than his virtuoso alto solo on Dizzy's Modern Jazz Sextet version of that tune. I urge you to listen to that solo If you haven't heard it already. it's really amazing.
nice video !!!!!! real master of jazz !!!!! thanks !!!!!
Amazing!!
Thanks for sharing this momentous and historical video! For me this is very special because it is most likely Monk’s last live recording!

Music has no limit for them

This why they are JAZZ GIANTS. Thank you, gentlemen, for making our lives so much happier.

Just a couple of weeks before they came to Portugal for the First International Jazz Festival of Cascais

I saw them all
Dahhhhhhhhhmmmmm!!! Out of this planet!
Saw them in Melbounre that year 1971. As Giants of Jazz. There ws a 7th member after the interval, organist Jimmy Smith.
My most enjoyable concert.
Remembered Monk giving a solo rendition of Ruby My Dear. At one point he spaced out for over a minute, not a note struck. The audience was getting restless. Dizzy came back on sage, gave him a nudge, and Monk continued. He wasn't too well.
That's interesting; I saw them in Melbourne and the solo player was Jaki Byard
Me gustó mucho la música, muy buena. ❤
