@@inthetearoom a lot of things relating to time are arbitrary: the number of hours in a day, the length of a second, number of months in a year.
when counting years, it's best to have arbitrary starting point than nothing at all. or worse, competing calendars. i find time zones annoying as f***. wish we could agree to get rid of them and deal with Zulu time. or something else equally arbitrary.

This is actually a great piece of history. It captures the hope of the year 2000, and the 2000's from the people of the 90's. It's a dead shame they didn't get the perfect world they imagined, but this song captures that hope, and keeps it alive for us, to enjoy in their hope more than 20 years on.

    • @genericdude3554

@ag2407 dead shame really. Every generation thought they were the difference that needed to be made until the change was too late. Glad that we can all experience the music that our past generations listened to through their lives though. It'd be impressive if it wasn't terrifying

I was 15 when this song came out. I was in love with it then and I am still in love with it now that I am 37. The only difference now, is that every time Robbie Williams says "Youth is wasted on the young, before you know it's come and gone too soon", it hits me real hard, because I just realized how the years went by so fast.

Heard it at TJ's at around 830AM this morning, brought a tear to my eye. Thinking back for a second to when I was 11 in 1999 and first heard it and how simpler the world was, how provincial my life was, humming it to myself in the outfield at baseball practice. Couldn't even contemplate the way the future turned out. But hey, maybe the same applies for the future going forward.

British people can be proud for the creation of suicidal misfits. Don't get me wrong, it's not the suicidal misfits I'm at arms with, it's the so called 'proud' British people. You know, the ones that spite people behind their backs just because they're jealous of them? I kinda think Robbie was even more pissed off than I am about the lies. Wake up and see the sarcasam in my 'eyes'.

And though the song did NOT present it, the Fleming novel reminded us that we live the first time when we are born; the second time when we look death in the face. In my case that was true. That truth is part of the wondrous; divine truth of the song. Obviously, the Millennium also references the End of the World, and then many of us will hope and pray to live a second time, changed...

They said he was a big deal over there. While we were there Rock DJ came out and all over the radio they kept talking about how he was under fire for how controversial the music video was. When I got home to Canada and got to watch Much Music (back when they played music) I finally got to see what all the fuss was about.

I hope your little dude will forever know and LOVE this song, really! My son is 38, and I raised him on Gino Vanneli, and to this day he is still a fan. When I was pregnant with my daughter, now 43, I listened to Mozart constantly. She loves Mozart, but she is a big fan of Prince (modern day Mozart)) Music is sooo important in a child's life, even thought they don't know it. Both my kids, and my grandkids, are music maniacs. They love every genre of music, except jazz or country (they take after their mama). I used to hate metal, hard rock, until they started joining up with symphonies. Then all of a sudden orchestra and hard rock became a beautiful sound. Metallica for instance. .No Leaf Clover. Check it out.

@Amsterdam 2032 early Genzies were toddlers in 1998, people born in the late 90s cannot remember anything about the beginning of the millennium or the Y2K, even the last millennials were kids in that year, so this song practically represents the era of the oldest millennials (1981-1988). The Spice girls did something similar with the song Move over (Generation next). Musical era of genzies started with Ariana Grande, Fifth Harmony and the second wave of genzies is just starting in this decade with Olivia Rodrigo, etc. But if you like Robbie and you feel part of the Gen Y, no problem, we accept you.

That undernote which is a tribute to the notes used in Your Only Live Twice is part of the reason this song speaks to me every time.

Think the answer to why Robbie Williams never broke America is here.
At the height of Neptune’s, Dr Dre and Timbaland production, Nelle Hooper videos, and Nu Metal, Williams samples A 60s bond theme and does an ironic song and video that so specifically British - in its irony, attitude cultural references (Reliant Robin and ‘come and have a go if you think you are hard enough’)and self depreciation.

We got stars and we've got entertainers. Robbie Williams belongs in both categories...

I remembered watching this on TRL and MTV in the 90’s (late) and always fell in love with this song. The instrumental is so captivating. Oh yeah I’m a 80’s baby and I miss the good old days when things were slight innocent.

Yeah, it’s not that things back then were innocent compared to today. It’s that we’re more interconnected than ever before, as a result, the truth and its gory details are now known and there’s no going back or hiding despite various attempts to seal the Pandora’s box that’s social media.
