Leo can equip things because he is set to the 15th character slot, the one that determines what items can be equipped when using the Merit Award ("Heavy Equipment" in FFusME). I suspect that Banon might share the Imp's equip list, though I'm unsure.
Good question, I didn't try that out. There is some code that can be removed so that Banon can die without triggering the game over scene.
apparently there is already a Playable Leo hack online. What it does is replace Shadow with Leo, and Leo is 100% playable, unequippable and also can use magic and espers etc Which is by far the best hack for the game I have ever seen. Well, that and the Cystal hack
Have you tried Return of the Dark Sorcerer hack?
You can play with them throughout the World of Ruin since the events are adapted to have any party member. I would worry about the colisseum, and maybe the event that activates when you go into kefka's tower once.
Issues more important to solve include how to properly equip them, as well as how to have their sprites being displayed in the shops when buying something. Oh, and maybe adding their names to the ending scene.
Where is this hack from? Is it available for download anywhere? Is it still being worked on?
I haven't found any hacks that are designed to actually add these two characters rather than replacing regular characters with them. This would be very interesting to play with.
This is a really fun thing to watch, I gotta say, Can't wait to see you iron out all the issues with it. One thing I wanna know, is it possible to hack the SNES version and place all the new stuff added in the GBA version over?

rest assured, i love ff6, on gba or snes, its my favorite game, but when playing it on the best system, you cant love it on others as much
Maybe the two extra slots are for Biggs ("Vicks") and Wedge. Or maybe not.
They get recycled for most of the guest characters of the game. They start as Biggs+Wedge, cycle through other guests such as Banon, and end as Leo+Kefka. I remember back in the 90s having a game genie code that unlocked the two slots, though Leo was restricted to his starting gear and no magic. Kefka would crash the game in battle since he had no battle commands.
I experienced the same thing and Kefka still crashed the game even if you gave him ability commands. I was fascinated as a teenager trying to figure out how to hack the game in the mid 1990's.
Very interested. I also wonder what happens if Bannon dies in the Colosseum. Is it a normal game over, or does the game wig out?
Using the unequip guy also does not unequip Umaro for some reason
in my ntsc north american version (there were multiple versions of the game), the unequip guy could only unequip Umaro of his accessories. I usually just kept the Rage Orb and Blizzard attached to him, but switched the Blizzard Orb to the Offering when I wanted to use him in the Fanatics' Tower.
i wonder what would happen if u took bannon and killed him like that but save it in the world of ruin before u got him because generally the game would think u would be before the world of ruin
Since these 2 guys are not the ongoing chatacters of the game, wud u lose all items equipped to them when they are gone???????

This is now possible as of Version 3.2 of Final Fantasy IV: General Leo Edition.
Well it is done differently though for that hack, as he sacrifices a playable character (Shadow) to make room for Leo. So it is much easier than this method, which aims to add Leo and keep all the rest of the characters, you see.
I've seen romhacks by fedorajoe where the only thing that is censored are playable ninjas.
i have to applaud the cactrot they have no feasible way of killing it same with the chupon because of sneeze cactrot just has a high evade

Someone should completely redo this game maybe as a Hack and that way you don't have to use the glitch to get Leo or bannon in your party. And make it available to buy as an actual SNES game
Imagine if the game allowed you to use Leo and Banon as playable characters in the same team at some point, so that you could spam Shock and Health;
that would have been freaking awesome.
