    Are photocells the same, my street light doesn’t turn off indoors, despite the lights being on.

    Very good video. Thanks for giving your thought process on the bulb's functionality regarding its response to IR light. Makes so much sense.

    I think the wisdom behind the infrared sensor is that when you use it with sockets that come with reflectors, it might detect its own light and not switch off at all.

      I guess that's one possible explanation/benefit :)

    Just sharing, at 2020, just bought mine at Handyman hardware for 220 pesos for a 5 watt bulb same Firefly brand. My observation, too bright for a 5 watt, almost as bright as our 1 year old 8 watt Firefly regular led. We use this at our open garage with ceiling, turns On mostly at 5-6pm, turns Off at 6:45-7 am. Sometimes turns On when its very cloudy like when its raining even at lunch time.

    these work great for outdoor porches and decks because the LED light spectrum doesn't attract any bugs

      So is natural life force stays away from them does that not tell you something about the hazard of using LED lights? There is scientific data at linking them to causing cancer

    3:16 Yes, different time, because of the clouds also and maybe rain dark clouds.

    Is it ok if i still use the on-off switch? Our dusk to dawn bulb switch on earlier in the afternoon & switch off a little bit later in the morning. Anyway we'll be doing this only when we are at our home. Thnks.

    Wow! I am so thankful for this video. Do you think the same technology exists on photocell sensors?

  • @vmaldia
    @vmaldia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Nice video. But it would have been better if you actually tried using it outside, in various outside light fixtures and actually watched it turn on/off as the sun set/rose. Although this would require a lot of observation time

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had tested it outside, although I didn't shoot any footage because the camera would have to be rolling for quite some time to capture it. It seemed to work fine. It just wasn't until I brought it inside that I realized the way it works is quite different from similar dusk to dawn bulbs.

    Question ! Maybe you can help me. I am simply trying to find a solar powered dusk to dawn (non-motion sensor type) light bulb to replace our "gas light" coach light pole light. We want to keep the pole lantern (lantern head has 4 sides of glass) but can no longer run it as a gas lantern as the "mantels" for the natural gas supply are no longer available. We will disconnect / decommission the gas line to the lantern. I simply need a bulb (preferably LED) connected to a small solar collector panel that would sit on the outside of the lantern head to collect the sunlight then supply the bulb with solar power via a simple wire to the bulb itself. Not a "floodlight" but just a normal lamppost yard or driveway light. I have been unable to find such a simple light. Do you know it that sort of thing exists?

    Blue light given off by LED lights as well as mobile phones is supposed to lower your immune system and increase your chances of cancer. A friend who had cancer told me her oncologist said most of us can get cancer a few times in a lifetime but I remune system normally takes care of it. Lack of Vitamin D from the Sun lowers your immune system as well. Are there any solutions to using the cheaper fuel efficient energy-saving LED bulbs with a blue light filter? Or an infrared element?

    This might be a dumb question but, when the bulb turns off will you still be consuming power since the switch is still on? Or is the base taking place of the switch inside your living room or where ever its located?

    Hello Gadget Addict - I bought a TCP dawn til dusk bulb (different brand), and your video was very helpful. I thought it would also be helpful to let you know that my bulb was flashing in the porch light - hence watching video - when I put it in just before dusk. That didn't seem right so I after watching your video we took the lampshade off - and it worked! The lampshade was frosted glass and was maybe too reflective? Anyway, thought I would let you know so you could add this as many people will have shades on their porch lights.

    May I know how much does this cost? And can this be installed inside a case? I mean I have LED bulbs on my gate post but they are inside a case. I need to know if putting it inside a case won't affect the sensor.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure about the cost but you should be able to see it in your local hardware shop. I think it will work fine inside a glass case because it can still pickup the sunlight.

    The only question is how far can you place this light so it can detect the sun?..

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd assume it's pretty flexible since it was able to pickup the small amount of IR from the remote control.

      93 million miles? Well that is how far the sun is from us. Oh wait you mean inside the house away from the window? Good question.

      Gadget Addict what's the second test? is that small flashlight? haha I'm try my flashlight but not turning off, unlike the tronix automatic night light..

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most automatic lights use light dependent resistors (LDR) and don't really care what type of light it is. But this Firefly bulb is using IR receivers to more accurately detect the sun. If your flashlight doesn't give off much IR, it won't be able to trick the bulb. The one I'm using is from Thrunite. A cigarette lighter would probably work since the flame creates IR.
