Thanks for the cameo Reed. This video is amazing by the way. Bizarrely I had already planned to do exactly this with all my smart bulbs, but now I've seen how well you did it I'm not sure I should bother... Except of course to prove that Hue is the worst bulb on the market! 🤣
Great video, and Hibbert cameo was priceless! Two of the most informative and amusing home automation TH-camrs in one video! One note though - you said this kind of comparison hasn't been done, but digiblur did a great (albeit older) video along the same lines. They're always fun to watch though!
WOW. it's rare to stubled across high-quality content in your first search. This video is nit only super well reserached, but so prfessional too, in every way (content, thoroughness, delivery, editing, even humour)! Now I might just stick around to check out your other videos, thanks for the top-notch video!
As someone who's now justs starting to go the smart bulb route, this was an amazing breakdown. Would you consider doing something similar but with LED strips?
Reliability, entertainment features and wide variety of lamps and accessories brought me back to Hue. I love how I can put Play bars behind my monitor, light strip behind my desk, a Bloom above my cabinets and control them easily from the Hue app. I used to have bulbs of many different brands, and I hated the fqct that the same color don't match on each other. And also, I loooove the Hue scene creator. I love that you can select an image and it uses the image palette to paint your entire room. Beautiful!
Thank you so much for going though the effort to do all this testing, you've helped me so much to make an informed purchasing decision! EDIT: Just got around to reading your comparison article and I love it. Seriously you really went the extra mile here and I love how comprehensive you were with everything, can't thank you enough!
The hue filament bulb is the first led I have found to dim almost as low as my incandescents. Of course the cost difference is $30 vs 60 cents per bulb!
@@dnoland77 I got the Hue and I'm glad I did. Yes they don't have the brightest color but when I use color I never want to be at the brightest setting. When I'm watching a movie I don't want aggressive red or green light in my eyes, just a light dim red/blue/green or what ever. As for the white, cold white is good enough when you need a bright light to search for something, the warm white is good when you want white but not aggressive one like cold white.
Well done comparison. I also enjoy Paul’s channel. You are spot on with Philips Hue. I started with LIFX because of their brightness and no hub needed. Reliability became a huge problem. Bulbs went offline. Resetting bulbs was a monthly occurrence and then trying to connect to them required multiple chicken sacrifices and chants. I just gave up after awhile and took the plunge. Now only have 1 LIFX bulb in my house. I previously had 7... well, I still do. But they are sitting in a closet. Philips hue works. I have yet to have a bulb drop off. I have over a dozen lights including sync and they all work. Every day. Yes, they are expensive but they work. I change smart home devices primarily for this reason: it has to work reliably. Keep up the posts and Ohhhhhhhhh the Zigbee!
Would definitely love to see an updated light strip video using this same rating system! New offerings from Nanoleaf, Vocolinc, Meross, Govee, and others mean it’s a great time for such a comparison!
Nice video and writeup Reed! I've already made my choice for bulbs, but your videos have helped me, and I'm sure other people just getting into the Smart Home game too, find exactly what they need.
Haven’t used their bulbs but their switches and plugs are great. Super responsive and makes controlling existing lamps and ceiling fixtures extremely easy.
I absolutely adore you and @paul hibbert! I am subscribed to several smart home channels, but y’all’s are the only two I actually look for every week. Thank so much for the smart bulb comparison. I still agree with Paul about Phillips....corporate greed! 🤣🙃
Great video very informative. I would love to see an updated video of the same topic, but I i think it would be beneficial to include the bulbs that are safe to use in an enclosed fixture
I have 10 LIFX bulbs in my house because I love the colors! The only thing I can complain about is the App. It’s just terrible! I’ve got all my bulbs on sale and I don’t regret it at all! Adds a calming feeling and atmosphere to my home I would miss terribly if I didn’t have it. Great reviews on all the bulbs!!
Hey, first great video! Thanks! I disagree with the power on state. I want that because I use smartthings switch to turn them all off and on, I like powering them completely off so they are not crapping up the network unless I am using them, among other reasons...
Have you reviewed the new Nanoleaf A19 Essentials bulb yet? We just put up a review of it on our channel this week, but would love to see/hear your thoughts in the future. Also, great work on all the comparison here, very in-depth!
Thanks, appreciate that! I mentioned it briefly in this video at 6:18. I like that it uses Thread, and the white colors/brightness. The RGB is definitely dim though.
Great video! Love it! Thank you very much! You didn't include Shelly bulbs because they are not accessible in USA or because you don't like them? I bought them because of Paul's video and love them. Their "dimminess" is great (I needed that) , high compatibility and power on configuration. Also, in your 10 categories I miss the "dimminess", it is important for me and many people in the bedrooms for the gentle wake up. Maybe you can include it in the future. Again many thanks for your videos!
Hibbert has a bug up his butt about the completely legitimate Hue Bridge changeover. Hue were one of the first options available, so it always made perfect sense that they would have to have a bridge update at some point - and since then, their new bridge has had a very long life. Hibbert needs to chill on the Hue hate :)
Good joke at the end with Paul :) And nice review, was ,missing the Ikea Tradfri lamps, since they are cheap and work also with a lot of platforms, have them connected to my Hue bridge!
but the colors of Tradfri E27 bulbs are terrible. I'm pretty sure they use Yellow-Green instead of green LEDs, so they can emulate warm whites with RYB leds, but the result is a bulb incapable of doing green, cyan, ocean blue and so on.
Thanks! Yes there's a lot to like about Tradfri, but I ultimately didn't include them because of the white temperature/accuracy. I did mention them in the article though: smarthomesolver.com/reviews/30-smart-light-bulbs-compared/#Ikea_Tradfri_1000lm
Thanks for putting so much time into this to compare the available options! I wondered if you might have a suggestion for the best bulbs to use as wake up lights? The metric being, how well do they light up a room slowly, going from dim to bright within a set time? I've been having issues with my wake up clock waking me up quickly rather than gradually because it pops on with a fairly bright light when it first turns on. I thought maybe using smart bulbs to gradually brighten up my room would be a good alternative.
I like Hue for waking me up in the morning. You want ideally the White Ambiance and Colour, or White Ambiance bulbs, since they slowly change colour temperature, with the Colour ones doing this the best since they can start with deeper reds. And since the bridge saves the wake up automations to it’s onboard storage, even if the internet fails, you will be woken up.
One thing of note regarding the wiz bulb you can group and ungroup bulbs by dragging them onto each other and when they are in griups the selectable mood light animations like campfire are awesome and can be bound to the remote for easy switching or night mode and or red light mode.
What an ending! That was the best bulb review I've seen. My house is filled with Wyze bulbs. All other bulbs here are dumb. I already ordered some Wyze color bulbs. These bulbs work with my Wyze sense, Wyze plugs and Wyze cam. One happy family. Their app is pretty nice too. I used to have Sengled here but I wanted the tunable white bulbs.
Haha I just pre-ordered my Wyze Color bulbs too, and when I saw the video at 2:05 I panicked because the colors look awful, but then I realized that Reed used a regular Wyze bulb not a Color one.
I got shouted at by Paul for loving Hue lights but my setup is Hue for white, TP-link for colour mainly because yes Hue colour bulbs are more expensive and TP-Link is half the price yet very, very acceptable. Hue is very reliable and is constantly being updated. I’m glad my choices prove themselves in your tests. I’m in the UK so a number of the brands simply aren’t on sale here. My next category of bulb, like you us extra bright (100W) bulbs and I’m choosing Hue for those too as they are a good price and do what I need.
Is the WiZ A19 the same as the Philips WiZ Connected A19? It looks like it might have just been rebranded but I want to make sure it still has all the same features
Literally, the only category that matters to me is how often it disconnects. I bought some Feit ones and every 40 days they disconnect themselves from the app/Google home and I have to set them up again. Drives me nuts. Started buying the C by GE ones and they work great, fast to connect to wifi once powered on, never disconnect from the app, but they're super expensive
I preordered the Wyze Color bulbs a few days ago. Definitely excited for those! You mentioned the wyze bulb didn’t work with smartthings but I’ve had no issues getting it to show up in home assistant.
Another awesome comparison video. I wish the Wiz bulb by Philips was Zigbee & worked with Hue App. The less apps on my phone to control my house the better, unfortunately expensive Hue is winning.
I just picked up a Sengled non-tunable, soft white starter kit for $15. It included a hub (bridge) and two A19 bulbs. Hopefully their product line expands so that I can get more stuff. Right now the selection of available products is less than stellar.
I'm looking for a tiny E14 bulb myself. Only thing I've found is a Hue that's 7.7cm, but it's pretty expensive and it doesn't even have colour temperature settings.

4:04 I would imagine last “ON” state would be more handy than simply stay off once power comes back on. Especially if you’re in an area prone to brown outs.
I think the category should've been about the light going to the last state when power goes out, either on or off. If you needed to turn on/off the light again everytime it losses power, it'll be a hassle . So it would be more handy if it remembers the last state rather than turning on immediately or even having a setting where you can set what each bulbs does.
As one with 41 smart wifi bulbs all over the house, I would hate for them all to come on at 1:45am following a brief power outage. I think that was the point of the category.
@@ZNotFound thanks for the info. I was trying to wrap my head around Power On State, for example, on the Cree lights. We experience blackouts a bit often where we live. Good to know my lights will go back to whatever setting was on prior to the blackout. Would be really bad if all the lights came on after the blackout. Much appreciated
For those looking into getting some smart bulbs, I personally recommend getting ones that are controlled by a remote and do not need WiFi so you can avoid the inevitable frustrating troubleshooting that will come with WiFi connected smart bulbs.
In his comparison he states that LIFX might be preferred over Hue because it doesn't need a bridge. Philips Hue doesn't require a bridge either, its only needed if you want to connect like 10 bulbs.
