We used to camp at Miguel’s in the nineties. Now in our 50s, the wife I will be heading to the Red to climb at the end of the month. Such a great place:)
Love to see it! So awesome as a Kentuckian to see one of my favorite joints spotlighted like this. Miguel's is an absolute treasure and the perfect way to finish off a hike in the gorge
I’ve been a climber for a couple of years. The Red always remains my favorite place to climb, if not for the quality of rock for the people. The amount of kindhearted interactions I’ve had at the red is staggering. Finding people to belay you’ve known for less than an hour, people feeding others when they have a little extra food, people supporting you at the crag or wherever I’ve felt nothing like it
I've never climbed it, but I've camped in the gorge for years. I swear to y'all it feels like my brain and my spirit heal every time I go out there to have dumb rowdy adventures lol. Even my worst days out there are made better knowing they'll make the best stories. Red River Gorge is legit magical.
A couple friends and I heard that Red river gorge was a good place to climb so we drove over there from the middle of North Carolina with no plan. While on the way we realized we needed a place to lay our tents and googled around a bit, we heard that this place "miguel's pizza" is a local place for climbers so we decided to check it out. We thought it was gonna be a local pizza guy who liked to climb and sometimes let a few people crash in his backyard. We got there at midnight and it was pitchblack, so we set our tents up and bunkered down. The next day we woke up and realized the size of the compound! and how amazing it was. There were so many climbers and there was food and a small climbing store too! We were absolutely shocked. But the entire place felt like such a hidden gem. Like going to back to your childhood campground. A really special place.
I go to school nearby so the red is sometimes an afternoon trip for us to go climbing (don’t ask we how many times we’ve ended up cleaning in the dark). Sometimes i forget not to take it for granted until i see videos reminding me how cherished it really is and how lucky I have it to be right here.
Ive never been a climber. But miguels gorge is only 20 minutes done the road. Its an important landmark and an important place once met a friend in chicago that traveled to Miguel's every weekend in the spring and summer to climb, since i was from the area we were immediate friends.
Tbh I kinda miss the old days when Miguel's just had like, a basement with random boardgames in it and it was so tiny and hot you basically had to be outside with all the ale8 crates. I mean it's good that they've gotten bigger and are serving more people but it's def changed a bit over the past 10+ years.
one time me and some friends spent the day out sheltotrace and when we got back to the car the sun was already down. I hoped in my car. and boom.... battery is dead..... im slightly concerned at this point I have my girl friend and 2 other friends with me.... with no cell service ... thinking we are going to be sleeping in a car...my friends walk up the hill to the street. and wait for someone to stop. well like 5mins into waiting a jeep pulls up in the parking lot and my firends hop out and say hey these guys can help but they have to go pick up a pizza XD my friends rode with them while me and my gf waited in the car... they came back with pizza and jumper cables and got our car running and we made it home. the guys who saved us were climbers and I am forever gratefull because we could have been there all night. lost jobs been miserable... no camping gear... no food very little water .... "thank you random jeep guy" if your seeing this msg
Not a climber but I've put down a thousand or so trail miles in the Red the last 11 years. I probably also put down a few hundred slices of pizza at Miguel's. If you go to the gorge you're eating at Miguel's. It's a right of passage that has to be fulfilled every time lol
First trip to the Red was in 1993. Great to see that it still has a great vibe and Miguel’s after so many years. In those days, you didn’t toppings for your pizza. If you tried, you would get a blank stare for Miguel and your pizza would be served with whatever he had on hand that day regardless of what you thought you ordered.
Sit at the table to the right of front door at lunch time... you might get lucky and also have lunch with Mr Miguel!!!! A trip to the red is always an awesome time.
I feel that I be telling people all the time in the climbing community that I’ll see em in the future even if it’s 1 month or 5 years. One time I met this Bible boy in alamba in sand rock then 5 months later I met him while I was rapping time wave in Potrero. It was pitch 8 and I’ll never forget how he prayed for my friend’s arm. Shouts out to the Bible boys.
The gorge was my go-to college camping/hiking spot so imagine my surprise when I move to SC and people still know about it. I only worry someone will try to develop it too much and ruin that classic rustic dirtbag vibe
@@huntrayisabeast16 haha, that’s not what I’m saying at all. You think that school prevents you from exploring and interacting with the world around you?

I'm from KY near the Red and Miguel's is the only constant for the red, no matter the condies, the crag, or the group, Miguel's reamains.

Wow! What a great mini-documentary about a really friendly group of climbers.

As soon as I saw Nike, I thought "wait, that's the dog that wanders around barking at people!"
Nike is a nice dog! I’ve pet him before!
@@ethanbell6640her! shes the best
You gotta ask Zach about the time Nike jumped off the jump rock!

We worked really hard on this video, thank you for the nice comment!
Just got back from the Halloween party at Miguel's, and can't wait for the next trip. That place is like a second home to me!
So cool that Miguel’s is still there! I ate there about twenty years ago when I went on a college climbing trip to the gorge
The red will always hold a place in my heart

I’m literally from South Carolina and i drove all the way from South Carolina just to climb at the Red
It's already developed to that point lol
@@emoney116dude I’m a Floridian 😢
Great video! I looked at your channel and enjoyed the other outdoor climbing content too. :)
We’re really glad you enjoyed! We put our heart and soul into these videos. There’s more to come!❤
This is so sick!
Alright I’m invested when’s the next video dropping also gonna have to come by one day
red river gorge needs more videos like this !!!!!!!!!!!!
We plan on going back soon! were Florida Boys so its quite the trip out there lol
Dude looks like a young Tom Cruises.
The rock gym teacher at NYU (~2002) was from Kentucky, surprising and cool
Great video
Super glad you enjoyed it!
All of that and not a mention that Miguel's has quite literally the best rated pizza in Kentucky? C'mon now.
The Deli 🔛🔝 🤓👆
whenever i see the logo for this place i think of ballooney, it haunts me, i live in kentucky and ballooney haunts me
can i come live with you guys
The Red is so special :)
It sure is! We feel like Miguel’s and the Red don’t get enough love on TH-cam and we’re here to change that!
All climbers wish they were Will😂
yo i was here last summer
Cool video but the opening line is not true at all. There are many dirtbag paradises out west as well.
Where out west would you consider a dirtbag paradise? Maybe we can cover that too!
Common knowledge
The Red Sucks, tell your friends.
Stay in school kids…..it’s not that cool
booo
Yeahs thats good advice, tell young people to stay in institution an to not explore and interact with the world you live in.
@@huntrayisabeast16 haha, that’s not what I’m saying at all. You think that school prevents you from exploring and interacting with the world around you?
agree, make 10 dollars making crap pizza and climbing with hippies that have no health insurance if they fall and break themselves....
I live out here in RRG and a teensy part of me is sad that I’ll never be a true Miguel’s dirtbag 🥲
