Thanks for this review. I have been using the XF605 for only one month and I enjoy its possibilities and its user interface. This is the first time I've shot in 10-bit and I still have a lot to learn about handling this format with Adobe Première. Just a critic at the level of the shutter. Difficult and long to use on the field. 25 years ago I used an analog soviet camcorder with a ring to adjust the shutter and that was great. After two months of use, I'm very disappointed with the XF-605. The AF is random, and the image stabilization doesn't work. I regret having bought the XF605 and have sold it. I wouldn't recommend this camera to anybody.
Looks like a nice camera. I use the XF405 and love the picture quality. I don’t really see the Hugh difference between the two for my uses. That is mostly interviews. The only drawback I have is lack of depth of field. However it does everything else great. My next step will be the C70 so I can use my current canon lenses. Great video, thanks
same here, Xf405 user. i was thinking between R6 or C70.. and now with the XF605, i'm thinking i should just go and get this. saves a lot of bag space!
I really want to know what is going on with the high sensitivity mode. Is it just a gimmick for quickly changing the gain settings, or is it a change in the noise reduction processing, or is it actually a new base iso?
Every time a new camcorder comes out, we start over with the same song: "oh, what a small sensor", "oh my DSLR has more dynamic range", "Oh, why a camcorder in 2021? Well, maybe because 99% of what you see on television is still using a 2/3 " camcorder (or studio camera) that is worth about 30 of your beloved DSLRs or mirrorless. if you do not know what it is used at a professional TV production is not our problem. And yes, you won't get the shallow DoF eithe ...
the dynamic range is just greater in such cameras than in any dslr and mirrorless cameras where it is simply terrible and more or less normal only artificial in log where amplification is simply applied to highlight shadows
That explains why 99% of what you see on television looks like bollocks. And what doesn't look like bollocks is shot on Canon and Sony cinema cameras with Super35 sensors, up to Arri Alexa and Amira.
@@raksh9 This camera shoots no worse than Canon super35mm, only it is much more versatile and more convenient, it can simply take more interesting shots and scenes, it is much better and more interesting than all super35 and FullFrame cameras

Literally bought a used XF300 a couple months back and am really loving shooting with it, the quality to my eye is excellent. It's good to know that Canon have bought out a Camcorder in the XF605, that I might one day be able to afford to upgrade to. The XF705 for me is waaaay waaaay waaaaay too expensive to even look in the direction of. Question: Will there be a cheaper Canon XF600 version without all the BNC connectors like the XF300? Some of us ENG and run-and-gun shooters don't need all that stuff. 🤔
Yes, there is now the XA70/75 cameras. The 605 is a great update to the XF300 which I also owned (and still love). But the 605 is cleaner in lower light and has so many updated user friendly features like SD card, awesome AF, dual SD recording, the list goes on and on. BUT, I still use my XF305 in multi cam shoots where the output is 1080 25p.
I own and shoot on the URSA 12K and Pocket 6K Pro. I still find these so incredible! Looking at picking one up in the next few weeks. Keen to see what NAB introduces in this space. But definitely keen on picking up a Pro Camcorder again. Awesome tools!
I would use the XF605 to film freight trains in 4k for my youtube channel. Trains usually travel at high speeds, so follow focus is essential. I film from sunrise to sundown, so low-light capability is a must. Is the XF605 for me?
these 1/3" to 1" camcorders are still wonderful when filming a documentary in underdeveloped countries. an integrated camera system like them can be useful and more safe in harsh wildland, while extreme weather, and from theft. Also only few lightweight accessories needed to stabilize it more. for example, with a monopod and proper knowhow about steadicam, an operator can use them like a pseudo-steadicam. with arri or red this trick certainly will not work
I have the xf305 and 105 cameras for house of worship live stream. They are decent but the 605 looks like a great step up.. I think the c70 is better for creative uses, but the xf series is a really nice form factor for run and gun a large zoom range.
I too own a XF300 and a XF100 and they have been great for live events and some concerts. I wish they were a bit better in low light etc but great cameras...of course that for corporate videos I have used a C100 mk2 with good lenses and a Canon 90D for b roll but those are more creative uses...run and gun is harder with DSLRs etc...the XF400 looked ok but lacked many controls...the XF705 was too much money....this 605 looks promising...I real upgrade from the XF300 and it looks to share its dna! I hope to see some hands on indepth reviews soon...
@@TheFandangovideoguy Great explanation. They do struggle in low light and pushing the gain up past 6db is basically unusable for me. Another odd problem I have with the 300 and 305 is they will only connect to my blackmagic switchers in 60i. won't work in 24 or 30p. Id rather get a c100 0r c200 with servo lenses, but the budget just isn't there haha. And you're right, the 605 looks promising at this price point.
Thanks for the review. Been looking at the XF605 for a while. For a lot of things, camcorders make sense and I've been using them for a couple decades. May end up getting some Panasonic HC-X2 to either suppliment or replace my HC-X1 / UX180 cams since It will be costly to move to Canon whereas I already have Panasonic batteries etc.. I love Canon color science
You can't beat a decent camcorder for any occasion. I've used various DSLRs for video which have a great choice of lenses and large sensors able to ruse v-log, HLG etc but they are uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time, lack power zoom, built in ND filters, limited zoom range etc, the settings have to be accessed via the screen
Great intro! You absolutely have to have an LCD shade. That monitor is tiny! In log and sun, you won't be able to read it. eBay JJC-S35 is perfect for the 605.
Great video. Do you have any suggestions for reducing the rolling shutter? I shoot a lot of live events and performances so reducing the rolling shutter that comes from overhead lights (like fluorescents and LEDs) and projections it's really important -- thanks in advance :)
@@raampen hmm so I have heard that doubling up the footage and putting the top layer one frame ahead or behind the bottom layer might help (but doesn't work well for dialogue scenes)...been a while since I tried it too. Rolling shutter caused from lights can often be reduced by knowing the Hz of the bulbs and calculating your shutter speed around that too. There are some helpful tutorials on TH-cam :)
Greetings Friend, could you make a comparison between "Canon EOS R5 C" vs "Canon XF605 UHD 4K HDR Pro Camcorder", what do you think of the price of the Canon XF605 UHD 4K HDR Pro Camcorder, is it worth it? because the Canon EOS R5 C, has better features for the same value...
Amazing value! I got rid of the xf705 because of the HVEC. I wish they kept their dual-side monitor but I guess there has to be some reason to buy the 705. What is the actual “street date” though? (Canon only mentioned “mid-October” in their initial press release but camera shops are indicating November). Any word?
Thanks for all tthe great information - only the rolling shutter and your mention of gain getting immediately noisy sound troubling. Can you share any more insight re: the gain & noise side of things please?
The media for this camera isn't that cheap if you want to shoot in XF-AVC. You need to choose H.265 or compressed options for most of situations that you''d choose this type camera.
Just seeing this so forgive me… I notice that with the sample images they have a considerable amount of greenish blueish tint to it. I assume these are images right out of the box, auto white balance on. By comparison the Sony z90 has a much better auto balance. This limits post adjustments. How do you feel about it today? Would you still recommend it today?
The XF605 is IMHO finally the proper successor of XHG1 (and XHA1) camera twins! After Canon 5Dii changed the budget filming and started DSLR-mania for budget video, quickly following Panasonic and than Sony, pro-sumer camcorders suddenly being neglected. Canon did put out the successor XF300/XF305 pair, but I've seen price cutting measures as market was shrinking with those models. While before Canon offered both larger XLH1 camera with interchangeable lenses and compact twin XHA1/XHG1 (the "G" version had pro connectivity), the XF300 replaced both in one. Even the "broken/slanted" design suggested so. I saw XF300 too bulky and too expensive for being true XHA1 replacement, despite having better lens (with less zoom!) and better 4:2:2 codec that was BBC approved. Also I missed that pro connectivity from XHG1 and XF305 was even more "too expensive". While my higher level production friends missed lens interchange with it. It seemed XF300/305 made no one happy. People chattered around upgrading to whatever (even later Canon C100 and other brands. Than Canon released "one ring" XF100/XF105 that were old XM2 replacement and that was it. For next six (6) years no new model. They only kept "XA" line alive, that replaced previous "HV" line. In 2014 Canon released a "two ring" XF200/XF205, which gave hopes, but one ring missing and camera too small. Not a XA, not a XF ... than they released XF400/XF405 in 2017, again same small form factor. I lost hopes to ever get modern replace for camera as was my beloved XHA1 form factor - perfectly balanced and handling with proper three rings for manual operation and not too bulky. I hide camera under rain coat when filming in wild and torrential rain started. F**ck me, camera was saved and seconds after it showered last drops I was filming again, where others were only crawling out from shelters. I thought form factor is dead and than Canon kicked out the XF705 in 2018! The XF305 replacement! Not only that, Canon decided to ditched the "00" skimmed version and just give out the "05" version with all the connectivity. So format is alive at least. And FFWD to 2021, they put out the mighty XF605! It is the most resembling XHA1/G1 even by the price! Finally a perfect all rounder again. Is it perfect at IQ? No, as XHA1 was not, but it is perfect at versatility. Thank you for such a great representation for all those "hybrid shooters" that think they held God for his beard with those awkward still cameras that can shoot video. I see it as taking stills with iPad or even better comparison: To take stills with XHA1/G1 that had that option, even dedicated SD card and no-nonsense features, including flash hot-shoe option!
I was hoping for DGO to compensate for Canon sensor limitations but this is not and Like most things Canon, Dynamic Range is ssub par. Also, it’s a shame this still suffers from bad rolling shutter even with a tiny sensor.
Yeah i think camcorder still got their fair share of market. We used 2 sony MC88 for almost all video coverage in church activities. And usually me and my friend gonna use our own mirrorless to complement the footages.
Thank you for this review. I am keen to see more of the IS quality of this camcorder. Did you try the 'walking test'? Do you have any more input on the IS quality of this camera? The AX 53 BOSS works really well, but the image quality is better on the XF605. Is the IS on the FX605 as good as the BOSS on the AX53, or on the GoPro9 (all in 4K 30 fps at least of course)? Thanks, Paul
Looks so great, and the price is a little lower than I thought it'd be (I was thinking $5-6K). I've had an XF405 for a while now and while it's far from perfect and isn't as sexy as large-sensor cams, it is still very useful and puts out a nice picture, even more so with the recent addition of CLog3. It's super useful for interview setups because it records 4 tracks of audio. I do wish the 605 was a little smaller, closer to the 405 than the 705. And I reallllly wish they kept doing the rotating side grip the XF205 has.
And the Image stabilisation on the xf205 worked better on a tripod. No slight lag when going from a static shot to a pan like with 605/705. But overall it's a wonderful camcorder with a slight cinema look
I'm amazed at how much shoulder-mount camcorders have disappeared from the market. Even if you were to add a shoulder rig to the XF605, the viewfinder placement doesn’t work. At least give people the option by placing the viewfinder on the side of the camera instead of at the back. I know shoulder-mount camcorders still exist, but you almost never hear about them. Shoulder mounting keeps a camera steady!
Last time I used a camcorder was back in 2012 when everyone was in LOVE with the dslr full frame look and companies like Letus and Redrock Micro had “cinema adapters”! I had the M3 from Redrock Micro and used it with the canon XH A1s and that thing looked like a rocket launcher! But was really fun to shoot with.
I’m roughly in the same boat. I had twin Panasonic HMC150’s for weddings and man were those things absolute workhorses. Then I got a GH1 for the artistic shots. I kinda miss these prosumer camcorders.
Thanks for the review. I do regular TH-cam vids and look more and more into camcorders. I did start with DSLR´s and shoot currently on a Canon 90D. This is OK but i think, especically for Events and Interviews and as well smaller presentations and Exhibitions this could be a great alternative. Low light could be sometimes and issue but normally I am also equiped with good lighting. will look a bit more into this one.
does this leave any advantage whatsoever to the xf705? I can't see a single reason why you'd spend so much more on it, unless they plan to upgrade the firmware to allow for H.264 recording. have they decapitated their flagship with this?
I'm wondering, if the XF605, like it's smaller Legria/Vixia equivalents, is locked fps wise to the region, it is bought in. The issue I'm having with Canon camcorders, is that a Legria only offers 25 and 50fps, while a Vixia offers 24, 30 and 60 fps and can't be switched.
My issue is that I can never tell the visual difference between a camcorder vs a camera in video. But I could always see the diffrance between still images. Given they're not being heavily edited first. Really feel like the value of camcorders are only at the $1000+ range. Since I haven't seen any camcorders for less then that, that can also outperform a camera in that price bracket. And having really good phits is really important. More so then video if you ask me.
If you're shooting in manual exposure and zoom in, will the image darken, or does the iso/gain compensate for the variable aperture? Never shot with a pro camcorder, but seems like it could be a real problem if you zoom during a take.
Very useful video, thanks for sharing. As a photographer I understand exposure, depth of field, composition etc. I love video, but when it comes to all the codecs, file types and resolutions etc, I have a lot to learn! I desperately want something better than a camcorder on auto, DSLRs and Mirrorless have restricted running times due to overheating when recording video, so the XF605 is on my radar. My question is, where do I learn all the 'tech stuff' involved with shooting video in manual mode. I recently had to shoot a dance show that lasted nearly two hours, so aside from B-roll a DSLR was out, so I hired a Sony video camera. It did the job OK but was only HD. Any advice on good resources to learn the 'tech' stuff? Thanks in anticipation.
I’ve been shooting with a mirrorless slr… I want to make narrative films and do client work on the side… I’m sure I can make this camera work for creative stuff but I’m not sure if I should sell my kit right now and go for this…!?
Please advise if the Push AF/MF button toggles between AF and MF or if it is a PUSH AF button that engages AF only while the button is kept pressed. and reverts to MF as soon as it is released. Tnks

@@daniellove162 just like that, I shot a wedding video with camcorders such as 605 canon, only much lower level, as with many mirrorless cameras and even movie cameras such as Black Magic. It is video cameras that are out of competition, and it's not just easier to shoot, but the video looks more interesting to the viewer, there are much more beautiful moments and frames. Shooting with mirrorless cameras looks dull and primitive.
Awesome review, thanks and a great price. I currently use an XF200 but would love to upgrade to this.
That was very enjoyable to watch. Thanks CVP for providing these videos for free!!
And yes, you won't get the shallow DoF eithe ...
daddy chill
the dynamic range is just greater in such cameras than in any dslr and mirrorless cameras where it is simply terrible and more or less normal only artificial in log where amplification is simply applied to highlight shadows
@@raksh9 what's on TV looks 10x better than all the cinema wanna be's with their full frame cameras. Canon is only present in the broadcast industry through their B4 lenses. You won't see any canon body on a studio.
What color profile were you using at 12:38 and 13:57? Any color grading in post on these shots? These two shots sold me on the cameras potential. Thanks Jake!
can you put a fisheye on this camera? will the xlr hub be seen in the shot with a fisheye?
I still use my xf305 on a weekly basis. It is an absolute workhorse. Hopefully will be upgrading to this soon.
I don't know why other people bashing this camcorder, it does look pretty solid and good to me.
Who is bashing it and with what rhetoric?
I own and shoot on the URSA 12K and Pocket 6K Pro. I still find these so incredible! Looking at picking one up in the next few weeks. Keen to see what NAB introduces in this space. But definitely keen on picking up a Pro Camcorder again. Awesome tools!
I would use the XF605 to film freight trains in 4k for my youtube channel. Trains usually travel at high speeds, so follow focus is essential. I film from sunrise to sundown, so low-light capability is a must. Is the XF605 for me?
of course
Fantastic camera 🎥
This looks beautiful and fun to work with!
If you're gonna buy one, might as well buy two to take advantage of the timecode in/out. Such a good feature on a camcorder to go to waste.
What a great review, thank you 🙏🏻
Honestly I am extremely impressed with the image. I have always hated camcorders but this has made me reconsider
camcorders are ideal for video and they always have been, and fireworks are also more convenient and best for filming
these 1/3" to 1" camcorders are still wonderful when filming a documentary in underdeveloped countries. an integrated camera system like them can be useful and more safe in harsh wildland, while extreme weather, and from theft.
2:18 one wrong move and the camera is in the water. The XF605 looks great but would love to see how good it does in low light.
In log and sun, you won't be able to read it. eBay JJC-S35 is perfect for the 605.
great video as always❤
Great Video! Any new canon camcorders in 2022?
Great video. Do you have any suggestions for reducing the rolling shutter? I shoot a lot of live events and performances so reducing the rolling shutter that comes from overhead lights (like fluorescents and LEDs) and projections it's really important -- thanks in advance :)
Hi! Did you get any solution or advice for this? I'm looking for a camcorder for sports events
@@raampen We shoot sport. Long days with AF always on. 1080 50p. The X30 advanced zoom is pretty good
Can we see the different between the XF605 and XF705?
A parfocal lens as standard is perhaps the biggest reason to buy a camcorder rather than a DSLR.
Yes, that is a great advantage.
I’m currently using the Canon XA50, do you think the XF605 is worth the upgrade?
Amazing value! I got rid of the xf705 because of the HVEC. I wish they kept their dual-side monitor but I guess there has to be some reason to buy the 705.
What is the actual “street date” though? (Canon only mentioned “mid-October” in their initial press release but camera shops are indicating November). Any word?
Kind of annoying when folks say "filmed" when digital cameras have nothing to do with film ! That said good review
Very comprehensive. I didn’t catch any review on the inbuilt sound recording? Is it any good?
Hi, do you think it's possible to use an anamorphic adaptor in this camera? Thanks for your time and congrats for the great work.
Thanks for all tthe great information - only the rolling shutter and your mention of gain getting immediately noisy sound troubling. Can you share any more insight re: the gain & noise side of things please?
The only thing I see missing is the electronic variable ND found on Sony FX line.
Sony Z280
@@csamd9049 True. FS line has it too.
The media for this camera isn't that cheap if you want to shoot in XF-AVC. You need to choose H.265 or compressed options for most of situations that you''d choose this type camera.
How does this stack up against the less expensive Panasonic HC-X1500E / HC-X2000E?
Dude, I just realized, have you lost a lot of weight? Looking at your old videos compared to now, you look awesome dude.
Just seeing this so forgive me…
I notice that with the sample images they have a considerable amount of greenish blueish tint to it. I assume these are images right out of the box, auto white balance on. By comparison the Sony z90 has a much better auto balance. This limits post adjustments.
How do you feel about it today? Would you still recommend it today?
Perfect camera for those who shoot documentary most of the time.
The colors are gorgeous. This camera is a monster
What color profile were you using at @ and @? Any color grading in post on these shots? These two shots sold me on the cameras potential.
Excellent review.
Ha! Until almost a couple of years ago, I was still using my Sony Ex-3 for pressers, plays, and riots. I would love to have another camcorder.
EX-3 Is my favorite camera of all time. it was so great.
Sony Z280 is a great option
What about using the Canon XF605 in independent film production?
Hello, does anybody know, at what focal length the lens changes from f2.8 to f4.5, and in which steps?
As a casual windsurfer - damn, those are some high winds!
@@DuffTV Huh??? Tripod-Stabilization?? You use IS when you don't have a tripod.
Great video and explanation!
Me while watching in 144p: I don't see any difference, what's the fuss about
Last time I used a camcorder was back in 2012 when everyone was in LOVE with the dslr full frame look and companies like Letus and Redrock Micro had “cinema adapters”!
Oh man. Imagine a XC15 style camera with 1-inch DGO 4K sensor and a nice bright screen and internal ND. Canon please!
Nice review anyway, what type of shooting to use this camera?
eg.. News, broadcast, live or any other??
Yes 😅 - literally all of them
Hi Jake
How does this compare to the Sony nx3 for low light and picture quality please?

Great camera. Thank You for this video. Best regards, Kai the bee filmer ;)
Thanks for the review. I do regular TH-cam vids and look more and more into camcorders. I did start with DSLR´s and shoot currently on a Canon 90D. This is OK but i think, especically for Events and Interviews and as well smaller presentations and Exhibitions this could be a great alternative.
Low light could be sometimes and issue but normally I am also equiped with good lighting. will look a bit more into this one.
what about a relevant choice in 2024 - 2025 thinking of buying this for next year for our school so we can record sports.
12:43 De highlights on skin seems very different from the two sensors. I don't like it on the XF605.

@@brmoogma it can be easily removed in the settings
@@brmoogma That would explain...
does this leave any advantage whatsoever to the xf705? I can't see a single reason why you'd spend so much more on it, unless they plan to upgrade the firmware to allow for H.264 recording. have they decapitated their flagship with this?
Wondering the same thing. I always felt the XF705 was priced a bit steep at $7000, but at $4500 this is very compelling.
The LCD is smaller at 3.5 inch. I wonder if the VF is also smaller?
It’s already mentioned in several videos that the XF705 will most likely become EOL this year. So the XF605 is a perfect successor.
I'm wondering, if the XF605, like it's smaller Legria/Vixia equivalents, is locked fps wise to the region, it is bought in. The issue I'm having with Canon camcorders, is that a Legria only offers 25 and 50fps, while a Vixia offers 24, 30 and 60 fps and can't be switched.
do you think there will be a new model coming to replace this soon ?
My issue is that I can never tell the visual difference between a camcorder vs a camera in video. But I could always see the diffrance between still images. Given they're not being heavily edited first.
Really feel like the value of camcorders are only at the $1000+ range. Since I haven't seen any camcorders for less then that, that can also outperform a camera in that price bracket. And having really good phits is really important. More so then video if you ask me.
Will this be good for documentary?
I would like to know which camera would be good to start my own talk show in my house.i know I'm going to need two camera's
XF605 is already a global camera or there are PAL and NTSC versions?
Yes you can change the system frequency in the menu. You can see full formats here - www.canon.co.uk/video-cameras/xf605/specifications/
The camera looks soft???
Hi, is this footage raw, i have a panasonic HC-X1 and footage is too grainy. I was wondering how grainy this one gets on low light
