  • This was filmed with the Canon XF605 at UHD 4K All-I 23.98P in Clog3 color profile and edited in Adobe Premiere Pro using Lumetri Color.
    First I'll show the clips in their flat Clog3 color profile, ungraded.
    Then I'll apply the technical LUT provided by Canon with no other adjustments: CinemaGamut_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR
    And then I'll add "basic corrections", slightly warming up the color temperature, lowering the highlights a bit, bumping up the Shadow level and then boosting the Saturation just a little bit.
    I am not a professional colorist, but this is some of the basic adjustments I usually make to my footage when I'm filming in a Log profile.
    I have another video which just shows the graded footage without switching midshot you can watch here:

    I've had the XF605 for a couple of months now and absolutely loving the run and gun capabilities. I don't shoot in LOG as my turnaround needs to be pretty quick, but everything looks great out of the box (I must admit the new Lumetri Auto Color in Premiere does a pretty good job!)

    Really tasteful grades in my opinion, and the dynamic range looked fairly decent. Surprisingly the camera didn't feel 4K sharp to me though, even when compared to the opening/closing segments (and I have no idea what you used to shoot those with).

    I love the look of this. It reminds me of 16mm film. I am going to pick one up and save myself the headaches for some jobs using my frankenrig mirrorless setup. About time a 1 inch chip camcorder came with log. Can you confirm autofocus works with Clog3 setting turned on?

    • @FilmRunnerMedia
      @FilmRunnerMedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, I always use autofocus on the XF605 in Clog3. It's never given me any trouble. I can't say the same for my C70 which will always start hunting in low light. There are lots of advantages of using a simple camcorder versus a complicated mirrorless rig, like having the built-in superzoom lens, ND filters, lots of control over exposure settings but also having lots of automatic controls as well when you need to work fast in changing lighting situations. The BP-A30 battery lasts quite a long time, but if you get the BP-A60 it'll go for hours without having to change (I actually have the compatible Watson battery and a CoreSWX battery that work quite well). And being able to record up to 4 channels of 24/48 audio together is pretty nice too. So, it's a really great versatile workhorse.

      Thanks for the reply @@FilmRunnerMedia I started out many years ago on the AG-HMC 150 and still have fond memories of those days. As the years went on, I owned DSLRs, RED, Black Magic, Sony cine cameras, then the mirrorless came and it was attractive because it was small and autofocus was finally good. But the main issue is I am getting sick and tired of having a crazy rig just to achieve basic funcionality like a camcorder has. Now that we have 1 inch chip and log with a good lens, timecode etc it all kinda makes sense to loop back into the camcorder world. That and I think the shallow depth of field look is kinda "TH-camr style" which looks and feels amateur. To combat this, I had been filming at f5.6 or so on my full frame mirrorless for a bit more info in the frame - then it hit me - why am I doing this? Why not go for the versatility and ease of use of a camcorder.

    Great video! Any idea how the sensor compares to the C300MKII or any of the other Canon 4k cinema cameras?

    • @FilmRunnerMedia
      @FilmRunnerMedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a C70 as well and I think the images coming out of the C70 are much better, more dynamic range. The XF605 gets a lot grainier, but I'm not sure if it's really because of the sensor itself or the lens, because I always use the C70 at 800 ISO to take advantage of the DGO sensor in Clog2 with fast lenses like the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 or the 24mm f/1.4 with the Canon .71x adapter, while with the XF605 I tend to use AutoISO a lot, and the ISO can creep up and get pretty grainy. And I'm really not very good at coloring, but I've used the two cameras together to shoot events, using Clog3 on both, and they weren't too difficult to match in post. But, just recently I tried pumping the gain on the C70 to 1600 and I noticed right away how much grainier the image was. So, I've been using the C70 a lot more in most of my work where I have at least some kind of control over what's happening, but for events and stuff where things are happening quickly I grab the XF605.

    Footage looked more pleasing to me without the basic corrections, with basic settings I'd say a tiny amount of + contrast would help.
    I'm viewing in 2160p on my BenQ 32 sw321c switching between adobe rgb/srgb and rec 709, basic corrections look much better in rec 709 overall and better than rgb.
    hope that helps 👍🏻

I'm already sold on this camera because of the ergonomics, AF, zoom, IS and colour science. Thanks for posting, very useful to see just what can be achieved.

    hi there. This footage looks really good...I wish I could afford this camcorder. I have a couple of Canon XF300 which are HD only. I know this camera has a 1" sensor. Have you compared it to lets say a Sony a6400 with a decent lens? A camcorder can be so useful for live events etc...Is the 4k really good? Did you try recording in Wide DR which I prefer for simplicity....thanks for the video!

    • @TheFandangovideoguy
      @TheFandangovideoguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilmRunnerMedia Thanks a million for your response...it's so good to hear from a professional videographer...I have seen several videos shot with the XF605 on youtube...some shot in auto and looking so amateur...but I also found a couple of nice ones in which the camera's footage looks really good. I know that nowadays camcorders are not sexy! But they can be so useful not just for news but for live events -the footage may not be as sexy as the footage coming from a Canon C70 but very usable for sure.
      I think I made the mistake of buying too many cameras! I have a XF300, a XF100, then I got a Canon C100 mk2 with a sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens-the best 1080p I have ever seen,...then I got a Canon 90D for gimbal work and I was seduced by Sony into buying a A6400 with a Sigma 16mm f1.4....damn! The C100 mk2 and the Canon 90D are a good combo for interviews (1080p-not many clients "demand" 4k) and the footage is nice and "filmic"-nice bokeh etc but trying to use the C100 mk2 as a "run and gun" camera has been more difficult. The Xf300 is great but too big I think for a monopod (I have a Sirui one) and the footage is not as "nice" as the footage from the C100 mk2. But for live events-dance performances with stage lighting, the XF300 (and the XF100 as a b camera) is great and usable, just not great in low light...so...I'm considering the XF605. I didn't like the XF400 at all...too consumer like but it has a 1" sensor too...I really hope ths XF605 has a much better image quality in both 4k and 1080p-someone compared the picture quality of the XF605 against a pocket Sony camera RX-100 VII under controlled condtions and the video quality was pretty close, but it doesn't tell the full story. A camcorder is for run and gun mostly with all controls easily accessible. Your C70 must be an amazing camera...I wish my c100 mk2 did 4k...I use mostly WideDR-I'm not comfortable using Clog or Slog. Hard to find a good 4k Camcorder...I was looking at a Panny 4k camcorder but it has a tiny sensor-I'm sure it won't be great in low light. Is the 1" sensor in the XF605 good enough? Not in the same league as a 35mm or full frame but I hope is good enough. Did you find it a lot better in low light tha the XF300? The XF605 costs a fortune (here in Canada)- I may wait til Summer so that I get some contracts that can pay for it....Thanks again for the video. I like the LUT applied with basic corrections mostly...

      @@FilmRunnerMedia We sure like expensive toys! Must be nice to live in Florida and take a camcorder along! I think I should sell some stuff too to purchase this XF605...I don't see Canon lowering the price at all. The XA50 looks a lot like the XF400...too close! For Wedding ceremonies (my clients don't always want a 2 minute video but rather almost the whole ceremony) I use the XF300, XF100 and then I bring the Canon 90D on my gimbal...sometimes people block some cameras...I guess I could hire a second videographer but money hasnt been flowing a lot lately....oh well...for a one person crew I get good shots...I have even used a Gopro 8 near the altar...I want to use my ONE R in the bouquet next time! lol...but seriously 2 or 3 videographers would be awesome but not enough money to pay them. This XF605 looks good. I don't trust TH-cam because it degrades video quality but I think Canon hasnt marketed this camera properly. Even some official Canon videos showcasing footage shot with the XF605 looking just amateur...shot in auto and low fps...If I have to pay over $6k cdn it'd better be really good! I would be happy with the C100mk2 if it did 4k (for those occasions when I need it). The Canon 90D's 4k is ok...not great but nice colours for sure...the Sony a6400 has great 4k and it's great for gimbal work with the sigma 16mm f1.4 but not as useful as a camcorder-I need 15x or more zoom sometimes. For now I may just do my best with what I got...I just got a 16" M1pro Macbook Pro and that sure makes editing faster. My old imac 2013 was a bit slow. Good luck with your sale! Thanks for the footage. I'm interested in such a camera if I can use it also as B cam for interviews. Most of these are held inside with often difficult lighting. Do you have any experience with that? I know the camera is not a low light monster but I'm wondering how it behaves in low light.

      It's not too bad, but I wouldn't go above 18bd of gain if you want to avoid digital noise. I think others have recommended filming in Wide DR for low light conditions as the shadows can get rather noisy with Clog-3. There are some videos on youtube showing low light tests.

    The XF-605 is very overrated.
    The autofocus is random and the image stabilization does not work well.
    If I shoot a horse grazing, then the autofocus works but if the horse starts galloping, then, forget about the autofocus.
    My XA-20 from 2013 gave better results.
    For now, by Canon, the XA-50 is the one to buy but definitely not the XF-605.
