I‘m a little bit sad, that I didn‘t discover your channel earlier, because I love your videos so much! Please keep making those awesome videos, I‘m really Looking forward to learning even more about kimono 🥰
Next obi video: finding a Maru obi, putting it on and then modeling the difference! In Kyoto, when buying a secondhand obi, the clerk referred to a full width ro obi as Nagoya. I was confused because I expected it to be partially folded. For awhile I thought she was confused and then I realized later that I was. Lol. Great job folding all those musubi!
Omg! I just bought my first set of pre-loved kimono and Obis. I’ve been scratching my head on what type of obi I bought and your vid just showed me that I have a nagoya obi with matsuba shitate! Thank you for explaining the different types! I also have the hanhaba obi type.
Thank you for this video! I inherited some of my great grandmother's obi and kitsuke accessories. There's a lot of Nagoya obi (in the modern sense) and they're beautiful but I was a bit intimidated about rules of formality and such. This broke it down really simply!
I'm so glad I found your channel!! My best friend is Japanese, and I've lived in Japan. I miss it so much. Wonderful to find such great information. thankyou.
Ah I didn't get a notification for some reason! Thank you so much for a detailed video. Could you do a similar video on types of kimono (houmongi, komon, iromuji, etc.)?
I have been trying to identify the type of obi I received as a gift and according to your video, I may have received a Maru Obi. And that's really crazy! I would love to learn how to properly tie a Maru Obi to match the kimono I bought in Japan a few years ago.
Thank you very much for this video. Also, I must say that that kimono, with this earrings suits you so well. The colours match perfectly with your eyes and skin tone. Lovely 😍.
I'm always so grateful for your videos! And if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have the confidence to challenge the old concepts about how to dress a kimono. (The old ladies from Nikkei community and Urasenke Chado way of thinking were my references for a long time)
Thank you so much for all your videos, I really love them. once I acquire some kimonos to actually learn how to use, which I am using your tips from the video about what my first kimono should be, I hope to find some time to also book a lesson with you butuntil then can you please please please also do a video about the types of kimono like you did hear about the types of Obi?! Like in some videos you use the terms for the more official kimonos or for the less official kimonos but I have yet to find a video explains the different kinds from the most official ones and for what occasion to wear them to the least official ones and for what occasion to wear each of them.I can basically now only tell that the strict black ones with a lot of family crest are highly efficient only for funerals and the parents of a couple getting married I think? The ones with very long sleeves are only for sleeves are only for very official not married women and I can tell the difference to a yukata. Please do a video about the types of kimono .
Thanks A LOT for busting a lot of misconceptions about hanhaba obi and heko obi! I think these obi must be considered more. Just two considerations about chuya obi... Chuya obi is also commonly called "kujira obi" since it resembles a whale (dark below and lighter above) and sometimes the motive on the lighter side are upside down, because you have to tighten it with a hikinuki musubi.
Hihi! Thanks for adding this in the commenst. I've cut that out because the video was already waaaay to long. But I'm planning in a history bounding style for kimono where the historical obi with more info will come back! :)
Thank you so much for making this video! Besides being fun and interesting to watch, it's so helpful to someone like me who is learning! I'm slowly learning as much as I can about kimono and kitsuke, and slowly adding to my small collection :) Also I love to see your beautiful obi! That blue fukuro obi is just gorgeous
Oh Billy, this is such a great video, thank you! I inherited my collection more or less in one go and have been learning about it while I go, so it’s been a long process of trying to figure out what’s what and what can be worn with what etc. This video helped me so much with identifying especially all the odd types of Nagoya Obi that I have, amongst other things. One question I do have however is about Fukuro Obi - I have a lot and very rarely any opportunity to wear them. Of course the heavily embroidered gold and silver ones are super formal but I hoped I could wear some of the less ornate ones with Iro Muji or Komon Kimono - from your video it sounds like I am wrong! Or could I get away with it? I have several that are quite plain, for example 3 of them are embroidered with the Hannya Shingyo in plain thread (not gold or silver) on a plain background, would it still be unsuitable for wearing in O-Taiko style with a more casual Kimono? Sorry about the long comment, lol 💜
Hi Billy! This video is very informative as I always had the difficulty of figuring out which obi to pair with what kind of kimono, and now that I have learnt more about these types of obi, I can have more choices for my casual-wear kimono! My first and only obi is a maru obi, it is 4 meters long and very stiff, I paired it with a furisode but it was so hard to tie the obi beautifully, now I kinda regret not getting a fukuro obi instead ;__; I'm also kinda curious to hear your opinion on how people style their kimono with corsets! Look forward to watching your new videos!
OMG!! You started with a maru obi. That was very brave!! Wow!! I LOVE kimono wuth corsets!!! I don't own one so I can't do it, but if I had one, I definitely would wear that!!
I know this is an older video but Orchard corsets are good for the price and are often on sale. They even have sales on their clearance. One can get one for 65 usd possibly depending which one. They have videos on YT and resources online to fit. I liked the black snail pattern off Etsy as my first steps in sewing them, if someone goes that route.
Bravo, Billy! Do you have plans to make a Wataire/dotera? I'd love to know how they're made. I'm a weaver and would like to make one with my own fabric.
i registered your channel. i love the way you wear kimono with dangling earrings. they sure match your eye color. my aunt in japan(mom's youngest sis) is a kitsuke shihan. BUT i live in the us so it's not helping.
Great video, like the others :D I have the same hiraki shitate obi, and was wandreing what it was called. Well had, have just given it away. Just fun, since its not so often I have seen the same products, even if they are mass produced :D
i've been wondering how to fold a nagoya with shitate ?? i really want to know how because my obi have this uglt fold in the center and i don't want it to be broken .
Great video as always! Im still not sure what to look for for buying a very first (and probably only ) obi. Like, what prices would you look for in a second hand store? Or the length you should look for to see if it will fit you. im so confused
I hadn’t known about the different kinds of Nagoya obi! It’s interesting that there are so many types of obi that we’re invented. As a video suggestion, I would be very grateful if you could make a fukura suzume tutorial, as the only videos I’ve found require special items like obi clips or only show how to dress another person in the obi. (Of course, considering the complexity of some musubi, maybe you need those to be able to tie it properly.) Anyways, thank you for making so many great videos!
Hi! When you mean tying a fukura suzume by yourself: that won't come without special items. Fukura suzume has to sit on your shoulders which means it's impossible to tie it on the front and then turn. My ultimate goal is always to look like someone dressed me when wearing furisode. That's not possible with fukura suzume when you don't use special items. Sorry!
Thanks for letting me know! (Yeah, I wondered if maybe that was the case...) Maybe eventually I will get a biyo-sugata so I can tie it on the ground and then put it on.
Great video! Thank you for the book recommendations! Two of them are also available for Kindle 🤓 Do you also have recommendations for Fukuro Obi knots?
Thank you so much for this lesson! I am still hopeless with taiko musubi, so I am interested in other knots. Is that okay to wear bunko musubi with non-furisode? Say, bunko musubi with houmongi? Also thank you for the hanhaba lesson, IDK that I could wear hanhaba obi with kimono! That is such a relief, because I love the easiness of hanhaba obi knots...
I have seen ppl wear bunko musubi with kosode, tho often with a slight variation to have a more elegant shape. It likely also depends on the type of function/event the outfit is for I think, as bunko tend to give a less serious impression?
I’m currently sewing my first kimono but as a plus sized woman I don’t know what obi I should use…or how to tie it given my size…help😅 Is the 3m length fairly common for obi? And what else do I need for a casual outfit
@@BillyMatsunaga Vielen lieben Dank.
Damn. I bought an Furisode (i didn't know anything about Kimono at that point) ...and I don't really like the Musubi for the Furisode 😅😅 I enjoy the Otaiko Musubi the most. Simple but elegant. The Furisode Musubi look like Bonbons/Candies
Another amazing video! I learned so much (and I didn't know there were 2 Nagoya!) I am absolutely in love with the hitotsu musubi and the Kichiya musubi. I actually think the kichiya musubi may be one of my favourites ever... Can people still wear that musubi today, or is it weird?
There are actually 4 different Nagoya obi shapes 😉 I’ve mentioned them all. And yes, you can wear Kichiya, too. Today you would calm it Bunko Musubi, they’re pretty much the same 😊
Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the Obi, why not use something small? It looks like a bag from the back isn't that a lot of effort for a casual wear? Excuse my ignorance but I need to know because I am looking and cannot find an answer Thanks
As elsewhere in the fashion history, more fabric = more wealth. As mentioned here, fancy obis were a status thing that folks copied from performers and Oirans, celebrities of their times. Similar to how youth today copy their idols and buy Louis Vuitton. Then they kinda stayed instead of the simple ties they use to use, because honestly you could bring more variation in your wardrobe by mixing and matching different kimonos and obis.
Thank you for an informative video! So ginza and tsunodashi are actually the same? I thought it was one of those that are tied differently but with a very similar end result. I really like your old-timely knots, they are so cute! Also bunko musubi looks similar to kichiya musubi, or am I wrong?
Yes, they are the same. Depending on the school they often change the name. It's super confusind. But they're the same. Anyway: yes, the kichiya and bunko just differ suuuper slightly. But they differ!
