    I must confess: I fold my kimono the traditional way, and then I roll them, Marie Kondo style

      I LOVE the idea of rolling kimono!! It’s definitely a good way to deal with no space ❤️

    Hello there. Just wanna say thank you so much for making an English Channel for Kimono. I know I can look up information in Japanese, but having them explain in English help me understand some aspect much better.:D
    I was also looking at some hangers earlier I think those trousers/scarfs hanger could be use to hang some Obi and/or Obi-jime too. (At least the ones you use often .)

    you can make your own tatoshi for the kisuri kimono from stiff acid free paper used for archival purposes. i found the price of the small amount of tatoshi to be shipped overseas was outrageous so i went online and found that large rolls of paper that is used for preservation of clothes and book were expensive but it was in bulk and i got an enormous amount of paper that i could cut to size and keep by to make more.

    • @Traeonna
      @Traeonna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here's a resource I had bookmarked from my historical clothing preservation group. www.si.edu/mci/english/learn_more/taking_care/acidfree.html Some may find it helpful if they wish to make their own tatoshi.

    • @Traeonna
      @Traeonna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh, you'll want Unbuffered Acid-Free paper. That's what's best for silk.

    Yay! My comment made it into the video! 😉 You have such a clever way of storing hanhaba and obijime. I never thought of it like that. And the idea for the labelling of the tatoushi is brilliant! Thank you for a super informative video again! ❤
    (Also, I love your watermelon socks! I 😍 )

    Hey Matsunaga Sensei! Awesome video as usual! Is there any way you would consider doing a video just on kimono and japanese dressing related vocabulary?? I think it would help so much to kind of have a show-and-tell resource that we can refer back to for studying the many many many many MANY *** names for all the items, accessories, and individual pieces, etc. Though I am learning Japanese, I am still a beginner, as I'm sure many enthusiasts might be so perhaps also showing the anglicization of words along with the hiragana would help too? I really think it would help me and many others keep track of your excellent teaching in your other videos as well more easily! ありがとうございました

    Thank you for answering so many questions Billy, this was a great video 🙌🏼 As you illustrated, Kimono storage is a very personalised and somewhat tricky matter, so it’s fascinating to see how you - a professional - manages it. As for me, well your video has made me realise that although I have a long way to go, maybe what I have now is not too bad either 😁🙏🏼✨

    If people live somewhere with high humidity, you could get some of those moisture absorbers that you just put on a shelf or on the floor of your closet.

    • @BillyMatsunaga
      @BillyMatsunaga  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately they are said to be not good for your kimono. Because especially silk needs some humidity and those are absorbing too much. Nothing is better than airing and ventilating your rooms properly 😉

    I love your beautiful organized closet. I need you to organize my fabric stash. I noticed the kimono fabric rolls at the side of the closet. I have two rolls and I take them out of storage box sometimes just to pet them and dream about what I will make with them.
    I would love you to do a Video on haori jackets. They are the perfect jacket to wear, even if one is not wearing a kimono. I have three of them and they are my favorite coverups for my western clothes.

    Hi! I just found your channel and I’m already in love with it. Congratulations on your very well made, educational videos.
    I’m a Spaniard living in the USA (30 years already! what am I thinking? Haha) and have been an admirer of the Japanese culture (and kimono) for many, many years. I would like to start wearing Japanese clothing, at least at home, but I want to wear the colors, prints and styles appropriate for a 60 year old, no-longer-married woman. Could you make a video on how to dress according to one’s age? (If you already talked about this subject, could you indicate when? I’m a new subscriber and haven’t had the chance to watch all your videos yet). Thank you.

    Thank you Billy for answering my question! 😘 What is the name of the Japanese bug repellent you use please? I just don't like using moth balls (naphthalene) because I don't like the smell of it and I've read that it's not good for small children (which I have). So I try to look for alternatives. Thank you for the paulownia wood suggestion! 😊❤️ BTW I love your outfit in this video, I've always wanted something with gold fish! The colours and the swimming fish makes one feel cool instantly! (although it's been pretty cold here in Australia❄️) ❤️❤️❤️

    I have two Yukata's. I like to fold mines back to how it was and put it back in the plastic it came in . They are cotton so I think I should be fine with not having to worry about mold. I should check on them though, it's been about two years since I worn it. XD

    Hi! What a interesting video again. I am grateful for your time and the details you add through the entire video! We get to learn both about your way a n d the cultural aspect of kimono (the part when you talk about the koromogae, the furoshiki to transport your items...). * ^ *
    Now, if I may ask two questions:
    1) How do you manage to sit / relax on western furniture? I always end up with a messy obi after reading on my couch...
    2) Is there a cheap way to buy tatoushi from outside Japan? Are there outlets / fleet markets for tatoushi? Five bags cost me 40+ USD ; __ ;
    お疲れ様でした ~~

    I need to actually find a better way to store the only one I have. It's a Yukata but it's also an Antique (around 1600s when I got it graded). I found it at a Antique shop and the poor thing needed a rescue. It's on a padded hanger but that isn't really ideal for it.
    Edit: Messed up. Not 1600s but late 1700s.

      The wood name is spelled paulownia and I think she said Mushuuda for the name of the synthetic product, but that one I am not sure about.

    • @Traeonna
      @Traeonna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know you asked for a specific name of the product she uses, but if you are looking for other things that may work, I have a few suggestions that I have learned from historical clothing preservation groups. Important things, clean your storage area regularly and inspect clothing. Humidity is NOT your friend (I keep silica gel packets in any storage boxes...change them out regularly). If you don't like synthetic things like mothballs (which are disgusting in my opinion), then there are natural things that help, but aren't 100% effective. Cedar contains natural oils that kill clothes-moth larvae, repels silverfish, but isn't effective against carpet beetles. You will need to replace these regularly as the oil will lose its effectiveness with time. Also, Lavender can be used, but will not kill eggs or larvae, however, it will repel moths. The most common bugs that eat clothes are clothes moths, carpet beetles, silverfish (and firebrats), cockroaches, crickets, and termites. I have not had any issues with my kimono collection using these guidelines.

    • @Traeonna
      @Traeonna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've been thinking about buying a tansu, but in Singapore, it's almost impossible. ;__; I've been storing it all in plastic boxes, but the length is much shorter than my tatoushi. What can I do in this case? Create a center fold in my tatoushi to shorten it?

    • @esnelisterces
      @esnelisterces 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omg a fellow Singaporean! I personally keep mine in a plastic storage box too, with the kimonos inside stored in the plastic bags they came in, but now I'm wondering if I should get some tatoshi? I didn't know silk was so sensitive to light so now I'm a little concerned...
