Just swapped out the anemic bar tape on my Wahoo Smart Bike. Even after watching this fabulous video as well as Calvin Jones from Park Tools, it looks fair only if you're standing at a distance. I went with the Supacaz super sticky kush (white galaxy) which was my first mistake. Lining up the white stars in some semblance of a logical pattern was frustrating enough, not to mention the direction change once I got to the top of the bars. If my OCD gets the better of me I'll simply order new tape, all black this time. Clearly my bar tape skills are a little lacking. However, this small upgrade makes a phenomenal difference more so than one would think. Thank you Shane!
Hi Shane, Thank you so much and I find the bar is really rubbish and would like to change to the aero bar. Please suggest if we can change the the stem as well. The seat post is also slipping. I've tried my other seat post, which is not slipping at all.
Seeing as how it's only a trainer and weight doesn't matter. Maybe go with a stronger bar, I dunno, do they make steel bars, or thicker aluminum? Then drill your own internal routing. I would think as long as you didn't go crazy and drill 1/2" holes thru everywhere, they would be okay... hmmm... just a thought. Good stuff as usual!!!!
I did this shortly after getting a kickr bike. The factory tape was very cheap and uncomfortable feeling and the bars were too narrow for my liking (I think they are 42's). I swapped them out for specialized hover 44's and specialized Roubaix tape with gel inserts similar to my road bike setup and it is a lot easier and more comfortable on the hands. The shifters were a bit tricky to get off as you noted. I like what you did with the heat shrink tubing. Is that hard to remove later if you decide to internally route the cables?
haha even before my first ride on the kickr bike.. i changed to 38cm bar and supacaz tape. Yes be careful when removing the shifters, i almost stripped mine. the bracket is cheap aluminum and plastic levers.
Hi Shane, i know this is old, but hope you still see the comments here. I tried to do the same upgrade but somehow for the life of me i can't get the shifters off. The fastening bolts are torqued so tight I just couldn't get the shifters off. Did you run into the same issue, or am I doing something wrong?
This is very helpful and I'm ordering flared Control Tech bars now. Does this remedy the stem slipping as well? My stem slips to the bottom no matter how tightly the clamp is tightened. Thank You.
Thank you for a great video. I just purchased the Kickr Bike and I asked the shop to reroute the cables. When I looked at the bike it looked that they need to drill through where they have the size numbers listed. How much drilling is involved? To extend the cables it seem to be a 3 prong male jack therefore an extension would be from an electrical store is that correct? What is your recommendation for someone trying to reroute the cables?. Once done hopefully I can forward the picks. The shop said they would be calling Wahoo and hopefully they will get more information than your viewer below with Wahoo support.
many thanks for sharing. first thing i will do once bought... btw, additional shifters in front of the triathlon handlebars would be cool, too. I haven't found anything about it yet. do you?
I would have thought that the original bar tape would have essentially been plastic to protect the bars from sweat and if you wanted real bar tape, which is more porous, you would double wrap it over the top?
Hey Shane, could you please tell me if the Kickr Bike has a replaceable drive belt? And if yes, what is the KM life expectancy and are these available to the public? The reason I ask is that I have just found out my Neo Bike has a rubber belt and is shredded after 3000km. They replace them under warranty. As you would know this is such a terrible procedure and some have had the entire bike replaced instead of bike. Thank you for you time and appreciate your sharing of your wisdom. Ride On!
Hey Shane. I’ve been thinking about putting aero bars on my Kickr Bike, but I was wondering if they would interfere with the shifting wires? It seems like the aero bars would have to be installed over the shifting wires, which could possibly cause some issues.
Sadly I reached out to Wahoo support about using an extension cable on them to do the internal routing, and they said that they can't support it, as it "creates more variables that could short the BIKE and cause damage to the electronics".
