It is. I bought a cheap chinese carbon frame and converted it to integrated hidden cables and I love how to way it looks. Worth every penny. Just make sure to find a mechanic who knows how to do it.
I thought it would make a good video I knew it was possible but at the time I posed that comment it wasn’t being done. I see now there’s headset and bar kits that you can buy to covert to integrated cables
I'm going to do this on my gravel bike in the next few days. It's a nice instructions video and in the video it looks pretty easy, so I hope I can make it without bigger issues, my local shop didn't want to do it because of lack of experience.
A video on internal routing hacks for mechanical shifting and di2 when the cable/wire gets lost inside the frame. Along with general di2 routing for all types of shimano junction box in their various locations
I have a 22.2 bar I love on a vintage Univega. Only problem, the stem is 25.4 😭 For about 10 years I've had a jank electrical tape shim in there that needs replacing much more often than the tape does, but it's worth it. Tiny bullhorn bars! Came here looking for advice on finding the right size bars for replacement bc it varies so wisely.
Good video, very useful as i was recently given an the halfords 13 innate alpha cyclocross bike. (I know its not the best) but as someone who had cheap mountain bikes growing up its a huge leap forward. My plan is to slowly replace the not so good components on it for much better and lighter used components from ebay etc. Alot of people will choose an entire groupset like dura ace for example but the alpha starts life at 12.2 kg so alot lighter than the bikes i had before but not as light as i would like. I dont care if all the components are from different manufaturers or groupsets as long as they are able work together. I want the lightest i can find or are willing to pay for. With a rule, no 1 part can cost more than 120 quid. 2nd hand, thats not impossible. I'd love to see a series on individual components swapping with lightness in mind and various options. Focussing each video on one specific component, what makes are the lighteset 10 say and how much you can pick them up for 2nd hand compared to the sometimes ludicrous new prices.
#AskGCNTech how about a show on the way our bike computers work? Explain the Satellite Constellations; how the head unit gets its signal; accuracy; how sensors are paired; etc.
So with the proliferation of “integrated bar-stem design” and hydraulic disc brakes on high end road bikes, this simple swap may be the thing of the past. Not to mention the availability of replacement part if it were damage in a crash, and the part cost (unless manufacturers can agree on standardized design).
Nice video! Are those carbon wheels on an aluminium frame? Was wondering if you can tell me something about the ride quality/performance with an aluminium frame and carbon wheels
I would like to know how to change a flatbar with Hydraulic discbrake and normal shifters to A dropbar with gravel Shifters. For your reference I'm thinking of putting a dropbar handlebars on a CUBE SL Road gravel bike
Can I upgrade to bars with integrated cables? For example with a bike as in this video with partialy integrated cable routing or is the headtube closed of from the rest of the frame?
They did an interview with a Sky mechanic who did it the opposite way to Ollie. He had an equally rational reason why it should be done as those who favour Ollie's method. It's about personal preference and there are probably bigger things to worry about.
I've changed my handle bars from aluminum to carbon. I thought I saw someone use a carbon adhesive tape not the grease. Would you know if that is something I can buy or was I just hearing things?
This should be pretty simple. Generally, cables are cut to extend about 3 inches past the brake's pinch bolt. I have this issue every time I switch between road wheels and mountain wheels. I simply loosen the pinch bolt. Put the wheels on and then adjust the positioning of the cable for the new wheels. Tighten down, and you're good.
Oh no, chicken and egg! I can't build my own workstand until I've taken the handlebars off my bike, but I can't take the handlebars off until I have a workstand! 😉
I am thinking about converting my flat bar to a drop bar (plus the bike has disc brakes too), so yeah, this video is not particularly helpful... Looking forward to that future one!!!
Anybody know about a handlebar shifts I switched out my cruiser bars for another set and now the gear shift is it's rolling around it's not fitted how do I fix that?
#askgcntech Hi Ollie & Manon I’m a big and heavy rider (1.92 and 85kg), and on my Tarmac I have rim brakes with carbon wheels. On long descents I sometimes find very hard to fully stop and the brake shoes and track gets clearly overheated. Should i consider using a wheelset with aluminum brake track? (I don’t want to buy for now a new DB bike)
As a person who knows the horrors of busted carbon, yes, you should. Get aluminum wheels for mountains and do not mix your brake pads. Pads used on aluminum can damage your carbon wheels. My trip to mountain routine is change from carbon pads to aluminum pads and then mount my aluminum wheels. I always have to adjust the rear derailer because of the mountain cassette.
i have flat bars right now, shpuld i just get bar ends or switch to drop bars if i wanna feel like i have control of the bike when i ride out of the saddle??
If you can manage the drop conversion, they make for a great upgrade depending on your biking style. You can find cheap drop bars to try them out, and possibly an older model of shifters.
#GCN Tech: A few years back I upgraded by Ultegra rear cassette from a 11-28t to a 12-30t to give me more hill climbing range (lots of hills in my area). However, sometimes I miss my highest gear with the 11t. I'd like to swap out the 12t with an 11t making a 11-30t cassette. However, I've read mixed reviews on what spacers and if the 12t lock nut needs to be replaced with one for an 11t and a possible 'skip' issue when shifting from the 11t to or from the 13t cog. What can you tell me about the hardware if the 'skip' issues is significant or not?
I normally run an 11-25 as my area is quite flat. I have a set of mountain wheels with an 11-34. Changing wheels always requires adjustment of the high and low limits screws, as well as a tweak on the indexing. It seems to me that you probably just need a turn or two on your barrel adjuster with perhaps some slight adjustment of your high limiter.
I've found that the only real way to wrap bar tape is to make an appointment with a local mechanic and pay him or her twenty quid to do it for me. I've watched the videos on wrapping bar tape and tried to do it myself five times at this point. It's simply not something to DIY. It's like baking meringue . . . just one of those things you pay to have done by a professional.
When GCN uploads a video on changing handlebars two days after you changed yours and it still misses a key information: Is there an easy to get of old tape residue? I spent 1h scrubbing, peeling and cursing

Flats to drops, please.
I just used a plug in my tubeless tire, now what?
I am very keen for the fitting an internal cable routed bar with hydro disc, video would be awesome
Bleeds brakes sram
#Askgcntech How to replace the Shimano hoods cover ? And do Shimano sell it?
Gcn has always the answers to my bike questions
Wow... and my new bars are coming in the post tomorrow.. perfect timing! Thanks GCN!
Perfect timing. What bars did you choose?
my bars are about a month away and they have integrated cable routings so looks like I'm going to have to undo all my brake and shifter lines
I went with the FSA Adventure Bar in 44cm. I wanted to try a flared bar and needed to add some width. For the price they can’t be beat. Cheers!
@@rm709 I have a set of those in 46cm on a drop bar mountain bike. Great bars.

Dear GCN, it’s 2020 and what we need more then this video is rather the internally routed option.

Still waiting for the hydraulic discs with aero bars upgrade video - come on GCN
Likewise!
STILL WAITING!!!
this is one fine illustration why i will never look at anything with internal cable routing.
"I can leave mine dangling at the side"
I am not sure I follow the comment about removing the cable for mechanical gears or brakes?? Or is that related to internal routing only…?

9:54 shouldn't Ollie wrap it the other way round?
I heard that on the drops you should do "from the bottom into the inside".
Or doesn't it matter?
A lot of people say it does matter, but i never saw a difference in directions. As long as you keep a lot of tension it should be good.
They did an interview with a Sky mechanic who did it the opposite way to Ollie. He had an equally rational reason why it should be done as those who favour Ollie's method. It's about personal preference and there are probably bigger things to worry about.
Can you please make a video on how to mount flat aero integrated cable handle bars? No videos or information out there.
Did the video to swap handlebars on an existing hydraulic disk bike with integrated cabling get made?
You suggest using anti-seize or grease on the stem bolts. I have read that using grease will confound torque settings. A myth?
@GCN tech please tell us about freewheels and cassettes pros and cons, difference

Just tape over it.
Isopropyl alcohol maybe? I find plastic scouring pads are good for adhesives and paint on other surfaces as they are less likely to scratch
Goof off
Handlebar tape is like wall paint- you add, never remove.
