    I got the original a7r4 as soon as it came out almost 2 years ago. It remains my dream camera. I find its a huge upgrade from the older r sensor not just for stills but also video both in FF & super 35. The extra detail means that one can recompose in post & the extra cropping gives each lens more reach. It also means that when I use images for lectures I can zoom to great detail - even see what I did not with the naked eye. Also one can animate stills in very interesting ways so the potential of the camera is huge - it may not be medium format but it s more ergonomic and there is a huge lens selection. I have also adapted many vintage lenses - some of these lenses actually shine. The ibis has also improved - likewise AF - color reproduction. And the EVF is a joy to use & I am gad that they have improved the display on the newer version. Also in terms of video 4k 30f) I find that in post processing adding slow motion works well - maybe not like the a7s3 but then one also has the super 35 mode so the lenses become more flexible. My experience with the camera completely matches your review.

      I have this camera as I am photography first guy and I'd recommend it. For me the full frame video is good enough too, if you're not hardcore video producer. A little softer, but full frame video looks for me better than super 35 because of less magnifying I guess.

    • @gitithadani
      @gitithadani 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vads4683 I find the video fine at both ff & super 35.The work that does not need 10bit. I do a lot of work with animating so the 61mp stills are very useful. Most viewing devices donot display 10bit & also the 10bt 4k files are cumbersome to edit. Also video is not based on pxel peeping but how movement is composed etc

    A7R iv is definitely a camera one can shoot for 10 yrs and not upgrade. Its that good. The images are stunning and the ability to crop plus the usable aps c mode makes this one of the best cameras one can buy.

      Yeah, I can't really imagine state of technology, where somebody will say, that your A7R IV 61 MP shots are not good enough.

      Owned my for just over a year and as half and still blown away by the dynamic range and image quality. The APS-C crop mode is great for birds in flight and wildlife in general, images look great and shoots really fast.

      I think that we were at point where cameras have good enough picture quality like 21 years ago with Canon EOS-1Ds. Most smartphones still uses that resolution and most screens do display that resolution. If it was just about resolution so at say.

    Have you noticed if the shutter sound on the A7RIVa is quieter than the A7RIV? Just picked up the A7RIVa and noticed that its shutter has the same, nice quiet sound as my A7SIII, which is MUCH quieter than the very loud shutter on the A7III. I have never owned or used the original A7RIV camera, so I have no basis for comparison there. But even with Electronic Front Curtain Shutter turned off, I am very impressed by the muted sound of the shutter on both the A7SIII and and A7RIVa.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used the non-A A7R IV much, so I don't really remember how loud was the shutter. A7R IV A shutter is definitely on the quiet side.

    Today I bought a 7R4a with the FE 24-105 f4... hopefully it was a good choice not to buy the sigma 24-70mm dg dn (with dust problem). For me is it important to be flexible photo / film weather and focal lenth. The 20mm 1.8 is also ordered and in future the 90mm 2.8 for long end.

    The A7R IVA might be the most complete camera Sony offers now but just like A7c it messivly under appricated, almost nobody is willing to review it. People wants ground breaking specs but it's the details that make a camera practical. When there is something ground breaking, most people can't afford it just like A1.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess that it is a bit of a niche camera because not everybody can take advantage of that resolution. I definitely agree that it is a very complete camera without major downsides.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      No, Sony would have to be willing to do that, but it makes no sense from their point of view. They are happy that they are able to get 2.36 mil. dot screens at least for the new units, let alone for original A7R IVs. The whole reason why the A-version exists are component supply issues.

    Thanks for the video -very useful. I am currently using a Leica Q2 and, thanks to the 47 mega-pixel sensor and great 28mm f1.7 lens, it produces high quality detailed images … BUT … the fixed lens means that it fails as a general “all purposes” camera. So, I’m thinking about changing to the Sony A7R IVA to keep a high pixel count and gain the ability to change lenses. However, I know that good images require lenses that are capable of resolving to the capability of the sensor … so I’d be very interested in your views as to the ability of modern lenses from manufacturers other than Sony (e.g. Sigma) to properly fulfil the potential of this camera.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have already made a lot of lens reviews with A7R IV, you can find those on this channel. Generally, you don't need extremely sharp lenses to take advantage of 61 MP sensor, the pixel density is the same as with 26 MP APS-C sensor, so not that extreme.

    Excellent rundown of the RIV. I'm rocking the original RIV, but I rarely use the back LCD anyway as I prefer the EVF, so the difference in resolution isn't a compelling reason for me to upgrade. I'm sure if I shot more video that would be a consideration, but I'm primarily a stills shooter. It partners nicely with my a7RIII backing it up. I took your advice from a couple videos ago and down sampling definitely helps with the noise.

    I own the original version of this camera and like it. It's good for most photography scenarios, with the exception of high-speed action where you need very high frame rates. (I practice action photography at a local skateboard park and it works well for that.) The original version is currently on sale in the U.S. for $500 less than the 'A' version. Unless you really need the brighter, higher resolution screen-save your money and buy the older version while you still can! One thing that must be emphasized about the R IV's video is the crop: unless you have a wide angle lens, the crop factor can be problematic. The video is also a bit over sharpened (which can be adjusted) compared to Fuji's default settings. Great review-thanks!

    A7r iv a or a7 iv

  • @markshirley01

    Looks a fantastic camera - if only Sony could have produced a updated A73 (A73 mk2) with the new rear screen ibis and AF, I'm sure it would have sold.
    Can you shoot smaller files on the A7R 4A.
    Plus what's the 1080 like as I many shoot 50fps in case I want to slow down the footage in camera.
    Is there any catalyst browse or gyro data.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The margin on A7 III is probably not sufficient for upgrading the screen. The will just make A7 IV with upgrades at some point, at higher price point of course.
      Yes, you can shoot compressed RAW.
      I haven't shot 1080p video for years, so I don't know. There is no gyro data.

    I’m waiting until the 21 but seems a7iv has forgotten us photographers, so, I’m considering a7r iv a from my a7iii. I have a couple of good lenses 20g, 35 and 50 gm. I even feel I can live with just the 35 gm on this camera!….

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think so, it will most likely be great for both stills and video.

  • @kynio3433
    @kynio3433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm considering that camera with 100-400 for bird photography. It enables me to have lighter lens than 200-600 and still have 28Mpix which is crazy when it comes to weight of whole system (A7RM4 and 100-400). I would consider A7IV with 200-600, but A7IV has this bloody flip out screen which is a dealbraker for me when going offroad.

    I’m on the fence about this camera …. Is it really work the $3k ? Somebody convince me

    A7R IVa or A7 IV for portraits and family shoot?

  • @TTWGD3
    @TTWGD3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can’t wait for the a7rV and better codecs for video with 8k and hopefully 4K 60p. That would be a cheaper version of the A1 haha

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure why would Sony make another high-res 8K camera besides the A1. This sensor is also not capable of such high-speed read-outs, so it would have be a complete overhaul.

    The question is, now that no one has any excuse about their gear, what are you going to do with it that no one else is doing?

    i woudlnt say the AF is flawless or the IS is perfect. they're good but, theres definitely room for improvement.

      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IS is not perfect, but I don’t see much room for improvement with the AF.

  • @RamonLinares
    @RamonLinares 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In the video samples that you show there is a huge amount of aliasing (look at your glasses in the autofocus example or in the roof of the bus in a later clip). Maybe that's the price to pay for the extra resolution sensor and the lack of anti-aliasing filter?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't see any alliasing at all in the original files or on TH-cam. If there is any alliasing, it is cause by TH-cam. You also need to watch the video in 4K, full screen on 4K monitor to minimize visible alliasing.

    • @RamonLinares
      @RamonLinares 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheHybridShooter I watched it in my 65" 4k TV. It is strange that you cannot see it. I am going to double check in the PC monitor maybe it's the chromecast that is doing something 🤔

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can also be caused by "AI enhancing" features if you watch it on smart TV.

    • @RamonLinares
      @RamonLinares 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheHybridShooter I am a paranoic and I have disabled all the image 'enhancements' of the TV, my guess is that the TH-cam player of the chromecast dongle is doing some processing. I just watched the video in a 32" 4K monitor and I still can see it a bit but nothing compared what the big TV show, to the point that if I don't look for it I won't even notice. To be honest I trust you more than my 48 years old eyesight, so forget my comment and thanks for the reply!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, TH-cam is generally not suitable for judging aliasing, it seems that the compression also got a bit worse in the past couple of months. Always my pleasure!

    A7r4a use the same focus system as r4. It's 567 phrase detection. Not 759.

    Is the writing of the big files faster than before? With my a7riv i can wait with only 1 picture is buffering and it feels like a very Old Camera. The r5 is outstanding there. With the Same sd Card you have NO WAITING TIME!!!! you can Open and Zoom in a picture faster than you can open the picture. Yes the r5 has Not the 61mp but a lot and thats a Problem for me. If anybody want to See a picture i have to say wait 3-4 seconds 😡. And with the fastes 300mb/s uhs 2 Card

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know if it is faster, but if I take one picture, I can view it in the playback menu immediately. If you need a fast camera, Sony A1 will be more suitable.

    You reviewers have to be even more tough in ergonomics, I know you all mention it but you have to mention how bad it is, just that alone can’t qualify as a professional camera. Somy must address this stupid design.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't and won't mention that, because I strongly disagree with that. "Bad Sony ergonomy" is just one of the mantras that everybody repeats, but nobody really knows why. Sony ergonomy is actually very good, especially in 4th generation. All of the controls are logically placed, the grip is well shaped, it isn't too heavy... I don't have anything to complain about and I hope that Sony won't forcefully address anything in that regard.
