I have had metal shavings in the fuel filter of my 2017 l5p every filter change since it was new 6 years ago. It has 135,000 flawless miles miles so far. Not sure of the source but 4500 hours of run time and the fuel pump has never skipped a beat.

My 2016 was a lot longer and time consuming. Also had to make sure the new ring was good after the install and then you had to prime the filter to get it flowing through. I have 5k on my 23 duramax, and this by far seems alot simpler. Also supposed to be self priming so that’s a big plus when the time comes. Appreciate the video.

My ram dealer wanted $65 for a 5.9 cummins filter. I told him it's a $30 filter why so expensive, he said "you aint getting nothing for $30 for a diesel" I went to the parts store and got a wix for $30. Same dealer wanted $40 to put a headlight bulb in my moms jeep, and that's was ONLY labor. I replaced it in under 2 minutes.

If it’s leaking from the bottom you will need to replace the bottom boll. If it’s leaking from the top a new filter with oring will fix it. But it’s under warranty so the dealer will fix it for free. I would replace it with billet aluminum bowl if you want to. The bottom drain plug strips extremely easy so don’t ever drain the field bowl from the bottom drain plug. Just unscrew a whole bowl with filter all makes more of a mess, but it will keep that from happening.

Those metal shavings are most likely from the CP4 return.. basic pump filters will catch that even if they are dirty, those are huge (comparatively speaking) ie +20 microns, could be from some sort of break in on the pump, but regardless, that can’t be good. Good thing the filter caught it and didn’t send it back to the pump and injectors. Good luck with that… 😢

You know you got a counterfeit filter from Amazon there, right? I fell for the same thing. The listing said genuine GM AC Delco part, but it wasn’t. I ordered what should have been the legit part from the GM Store on Amazon, but my order was fulfilled with a counterfeit part that looks exactly like yours in the video from a company called AMG LLC USA. I went to the auto parts store and got a genuine GM filter and there were definite differences. Just thought you’d like to know since the first thing you said was that these trucks are too expensive to risk damage to save a couple bucks.

I told you the L5Ps are super simple. They’re really no more expensive than the 6.6 gas to do routine service jobs on. The L5P doesn’t require synthetic oil so actually it is cheaper to change than the gas truck.
A tip for guys if that fuel filter housing leaks after you change it, put a little grease around the o ring on the canister itself.

@@troyl.8691I hope so, I own a 22 Denali 2500 13K miles on it. I replaced the fuel filter at 10K miles. No metal found. I don’t believe there’s any high pressure fuel pump that’s 100% bulletproof. I work on Freightliner tractors with DD13 and DD15 and the high pressure pumps fail between 400-600K miles. Huge mess. Even the fuel tanks have to be sent out to clean. I own a 99 Ford f350 7.3 diesel since new, never had a problem with the high pressure oil pump. Difference is fuel pump runs 25-32K pounds pressure. Oil pump only runs 1-3K pounds of pressure. Excessive pressure is what causes the pump to wear and come apart.

JB, another great vid. I will comment that I would not get hung up on Delco filters. I cannot speak for their fuel filters but will not buy them because all you have to do is look at their oil filters in a tear down comparison with others and consistently they are about the only filter lower quality than a Fram. It gives a person no reason to think their fuel filters are top quality. I’ve owned a number of Duramax engines and still have one but will not touch a Delco filter. I have two Ram’s now and at least the Cummin’s oil filter is made by Fleet Guard but I’ve replaced the original with Fleetguard brand as the replacement because it is higher quality in the filter breakdown comparisons as well. The RAM fuel filters however are identical down to the label on the actual filter as a WIX and unfortunately they are China junk. I love the content and appreciate you.

I bought my 2020 GMC 3500HD Denali Dually new right off the delivery truck. Since it was new oil is changed every 5k miles with Schaeffers 15w40, yes I know its overkill but I'm ok with it. Fuel filter is at 10k miles, or every other oil change. Every time I fill up I add Schaeffers diesel treat like religion. 32k on the truck and not a single issue what so ever. From experience I will swear by Schaeffers products. And I do all my own work on my truck. It will never see a dealer unless the motor or tranny ever had issues which I don't think will happen .
