You won't drain out more than half, because the torque converter is not being drained. The best you can do is drain it. Drive it for a month, then drain it again, where you are increasing the percentage of older fluid to newer fluid. In most cases, that is enough.
Hello sir . I no this is an older video.. very informative.. my question is upon re- installation does it matter if you put the magnet back on trans housing or inside the filter .. thx in advance

No issues at all. And, I read that GM drains the Transynd fluid at the factory, and replaces it with Dexron III before the new trucks leave to be delivered at a dealership..
Transynd is PAO and is superior to that swarf you’re pouring in your transmission. GM wouldn’t pour our transynd to replace fluids…I heard GM recycles every 2nd truck as it leaves the assembly line too.

If its never been serviced, it needs to be serviced. That old wives tale will not apply to automatic transmissions. Need to service the external and internal filters as well.
Hey I have a 2019 Chevy 3500hd dually and only 17k miles on it I am the only one that had the truck only pull a 8.5x24 trailer here and there and the transmission is slipping And changing gears rough just took it to the shop yesterday they asking me if I added some kind of additive Because the fluid seems thick When they rub their fingers together And I ask them why would I add something when it’s a brand new truck so now I got to see what they say today
This is all new to me. My ‘20 Duramax is my first diesel since my ‘97 Ford. My truck has reminders for fuel filter, def, oil change, air filter, etc., but nothing on a Trans Filter. Also, my truck has 49k miles on it, and all my service work, from oil changes, to tires is done at my local Chevy dealership. If this is so important, why has no one from the dealership ever mentioned it, and why is there no notification warning as there is for everything else? Is GM deliberately trying to hide this from us, ‘cause it wouldn’t surprise me? I’m not trying to be argumentative, just trying to follow this to its logical conclusion. Thanks!
The external filter is supposed to catch the majority of contaminants but the trans fluid is suggested to be changed at 75K miles, we suggest you change the internal filter then.
We usually change the external filter every other oil change. As for fluid and filter, I would suggest changing both at 50K miles. Cheap insurance for a healthy trans.
Have you checked fluid. Nothing in this installation would have affected your shifting unless you have some something to block fluid flow. I suggest taking it back down and checking your work.
@@thoroughbreddiesel If he followed your recommendation to flush it, that is where the transmission got F-ed up. Never "Flush" an automatic transmission!

If you are changing this filter every 10,000 miles, at 100K you would have swapped almost 3 quarts of fluid, which is just under 1/2 capacity. Another reason to change the filter regularly!!!

The factory filter should have a water separator built in... big plastic screw with a wire coming out on bottom of filter. Lots of companies make filter delete kits, basically a metel bowl that goes in place of filter
Great video buddy.... one question u don’t lose enough trans fluid to worry about adding? Or should I fill the filter up mines a 2020 so I can’t add from top it’s upfill I guess
If you are going to change over to an Amsoil, I would recommend doing an entire fluid flush and change. If not, follow factory recommendations on fluid (Dexron VI or equivalent).
@@thoroughbreddiesel You must be joking. You should know better. NEVER, EVER FLUSH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. You will end up with severe transmission problems, because you are back flowing the fluid and all the dirt and gunk in it and you will F*** up your transmission big time. Just drain it, change the filter and add new fluid. That is IT. If you flush it, expect to spend thousands of $$$ to fix your little flush job.
Yes, you can fire up right after the change. The pump will refill the filter, but we suggest you checking the fluid level and refilling to the correct level.
Check the diesel supplemental guide for your truck. It will suggest normal and severe duty intervals. I always follow the severe duty schedule for additional peace of mind.
@Thoroughbred Diesel, how many quarts approx are needed with a pan drop and internal, and a new external too? I am getting just to the start of the hot hash marks at 165 F in park, on the higher end of the cold hash marks, before I run the truck up to temp. thanks Wade!
After how many filter changes should you top off or should you top off every filter change and about how much fluid do you believe you loose in the filter when removing it
I believe you lose about 8-10 ounces per swap. So a quart of ATF will do you for up to four filter changes. You can check the stick for level, but it is really difficult to read IMHO.
I usually add about 10 ounces of ATF when done. First time I changed the spin on, I measured how much was lost, and that was the number. I top off with AC Delco Dexron VI, I believe that is the factory fill ATF.
Thanks for the video. If you're able to answer I have a question about my Duramax. I have a 2008 2500. I keep hearing that I should be putting a lift pump on my fuel system to prevent future injector/injector pump problems. Do you have an opinion on this?
The lift pump kits that offer extra filtration will decrease your chance of premature injector wear caused by lack of filtration. We do suggest using them for all common rail motors.
i guess im asking, for a good guide or routie to get started, fluid change ... flush? the truck used to be a lease truck, and plenty of dealership matiance but dont see anythign about tranny service. 150k miles what to service?
I just bought a brand new 2021 2500HD Chevy Silverado. It has an in closed transmission. I got under it and couldn’t find this spin off filter. Am I blind or does this truck not have one? Please help 🤓 thank you in advance.
HANDY TIP Take a plastic bag (Like the ones you get in the produce section of the grocery store and hold the filter with the bag wrapped around the filter as you take the filter off. NO ATF dripping down your arm, only dripping into the bag you wrapped around the filter. :)
A strong rear earth magnet on the outside of your filter will trap ferrous metal particles. And you can move it to the new filter when you service agian. You can do the same thing with engine oil filter also.

If its never been serviced, it needs to be serviced. That old wives tale will not apply to automatic transmissions. Need to service the external and internal filters as well.
How much transmission fluid do i have to add after changing the filter .
Seriously?
@@xploration1437 im talking about changing the spin on filter only
Dealer told me when i changed my spin on filter add only a half a quart
8-10 oz
Is there one of these on a 2023 GMC Sierra Denali?
If equipped with a Allison, yes.
Very strange. Let us know what they find.
@@thoroughbreddiesel will do
Question: Should you add new fluid to the filter (fill 1/2 or 3/4) and then install the new filter? To account for any loss of fluid when taking off?
Yes, adding a little to the filter then checking the fluid level is recommended.
Thanks!
So do you need to add tranny fluid afterwards?
Check after changing and add accordingly.
Are Allison filters the best or can another excellent quality compatible filter such as WIX or K&N be used?
I was told allison does not recommend changing the internal filter is this true?
The external filter is supposed to catch the majority of contaminants but the trans fluid is suggested to be changed at 75K miles, we suggest you change the internal filter then.
What type of fluid do you use? Transynd?
You can use transynd or any allison tes 295 fluid. I personally use mobile delvac atf with great results.
We used Dextron here, Transynd works too.
Lucas !
GM uses Dexron VI. I’m not sure you can mix fluids…
If there is metal fragments would you look at dropping the pan and doing an internal transmission filter change?
Internal filter only gets changed when a rebuild gets done
If you have metal fragments you’re way past just changing some filters…
Thank you for the video. I recently purchased a 07 lbz dually and did not do this to my vehicle. Doing so tomorrow.
How many miles before changing the transmission fluid and filter?
We usually change the external filter every other oil change. As for fluid and filter, I would suggest changing both at 50K miles. Cheap insurance for a healthy trans.
I followed his recommendation and now my transmission is shifting different. Anybody have any words of advise on what could be the issue?
Have you checked fluid. Nothing in this installation would have affected your shifting unless you have some something to block fluid flow. I suggest taking it back down and checking your work.
@@thoroughbreddiesel If he followed your recommendation to flush it, that is where the transmission got F-ed up. Never "Flush" an automatic transmission!
Did you put your magnet back in place
Are you in a regen? That definitely seems to make the shifting less smooth…. Other than that, make sure you are not low or overfill of level on tranny…
Glad I subscribed Outstanding Info
Do you recommend a warm up before changing filter and fluid?
I am going to drop fluid in pan as well
Will 2 gallons do the change?
Thanks for all you do.
Great video
I have 12,500 miles in my Allison since spin on and fluid changed
Will do the spin on
Allison Duramax said 30,000 to 40,000 miles to do the Fluid change
Thoughts?
How often do you recommend changing the transmission fluid?
Go with your owners manual on this.
If you are changing this filter every 10,000 miles, at 100K you would have swapped almost 3 quarts of fluid, which is just under 1/2 capacity. Another reason to change the filter regularly!!!
Is this the only service it needs?
I have rebuild with 30k miles trying figure out what i should due service it or only change filter
No, there are service intervals on the internal filter as well. Refer to you owners manual.
How many miles you have now when should you due internal filter after re built
Do you have a video on changing fuel filter? I have a 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 6.6 L turbo diesel 4x4.
They can be a pain in the ass... you can try cranking wheel all the way left and reaching up under fender, or pull front passenger wheel and inner fender liner off and you'll have a whole lot better acces... may or may not take a bit longer but a lot less swearing lol
I always fill new filter about 1/2 full of seafoam
Did you do this while transmission was full?
@pauljauch Yes, the trans doesn’t need to be drained to change the filter.
Is the 24 in the same location……how bout toppin off the trans?
No external on the 24.
@@thoroughbreddiesel……wow
Thanks brother. I would have never have thought about it. Just bought a 2019. And about to change fuel filter.
Ok so I just bought a 2500 HD I did all the fluid changes . Bought a magnet for. The trans filter. When I did the fuel filter .. I noticed it had no water sensor or separator on it. At this moment I still
Have 41% oil life left. Today I got all my oil and filters. I plan on getting aid dog set up. When I do what do I do with factory set up. How do I block it or get rid of it? Ty 2005 Chevy HD
2020’s if you have the 10 speed, don’t have the external spin on filter, only the internal filter.
What is the magnet for?
So metal trash can stick to it and not run through the transmission system
Thank you, I have been changing my spin on every 25K.
Did the 2020 2500 do away with this filter? Can't seem to find this online.
What year truck was the one you changed the spin on filter?
2011
Any special recommends on fluid? Amsoil atf worth the hype?
@@markdavid4897 Not if you line flush it!
Do you top off the fluid
Yes, you will lose a small amount of fluid.
What about the transmission fluid you lose while replacing the filter ? Should one just top off the new filter with new transmission fluid ?
Check your leve use the dipstick boi! and add as necessary
Add 8-10 ounces of Dexron VI.
So after that. Then what? Just fire it up and is it good? Will there be air in the system? Will it just bleed it self?
Yes, you can fire up right after the change. The pump will refill the filter, but we suggest you checking the fluid level and refilling to the correct level.
It's cheap insurance on your transmission. How often do you recommend the fluid to be changed.
Noah kraft good question
Check the diesel supplemental guide for your truck. It will suggest normal and severe duty intervals. I always follow the severe duty schedule for additional peace of mind.
Have mine changed with oil filter. Always figured, I would not have to remember if it has been changed or not.
New follower. First time duramax owner. Glad I watched. Good info.
Welcome aboard! Thanks.
@Thoroughbred Diesel, how many quarts approx are needed with a pan drop and internal, and a new external too? I am getting just to the start of the hot hash marks at 165 F in park, on the higher end of the cold hash marks, before I run the truck up to temp. thanks Wade!
After how many filter changes should you top off or should you top off every filter change and about how much fluid do you believe you loose in the filter when removing it
Not much is lost there, maybe 1/8 qt? Always check fluid on stick according to mfg recommendations.
I believe you lose about 8-10 ounces per swap. So a quart of ATF will do you for up to four filter changes. You can check the stick for level, but it is really difficult to read IMHO.
Do you need to add transmission fluid?
Not much but yes you will lose a little fluid.
Do u have to add trans fluid after the new filter is on ? How much fluid do I need to add ? And what kind of u recommend?
I usually add about 10 ounces of ATF when done. First time I changed the spin on, I measured how much was lost, and that was the number. I top off with AC Delco Dexron VI, I believe that is the factory fill ATF.
do you need to replace the magit every time ???
No, but you do need to clean the magnet every time.
Would it be OK since the filter is straight up and down to fill the filter with trans oil and then screw it in?
Just got a 2022 high country. This al all new to me, thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you for the video. Do I need to add fluid after I replace that filter?
YW. Just a little. Fill till fluid level is correct on trans dipstick, check with engine running.
Is it ok to use a WIX BRAND FILTER?
As long as it is the correct part number per Wix. We suggest using genuine Allison if at all possible.
Thoroughbred Thank you good to know. Does the positive pressure to the injector pumps have any benefit in your opinion?
how much fluid do u need to add after replacing the filter??
Just a small amount. Run the truck to operating temp then check fluid. Add as needed.
8-10 oz
info on... just got a 2015 3500 alison, whats proper fluid change? 150k miles, unknown if ever been done,
i guess im asking, for a good guide or routie to get started, fluid change ... flush? the truck used to be a lease truck, and plenty of dealership matiance but dont see anythign about tranny service. 150k miles what to service?
Thanks for a great and informative video. Good instructions and visual aid. I like the suggestion when to change the filter. Excellent video.
Glad it was helpful!
I fill mine with seafoam transmission additive just because that stuff has been great to me for decades.
How many quarts used
Just the capacity of that filter plus any more that you lose, call it less than a quart.
Wish I would have known this before my transmission went out. Damnit
I just bought a brand new 2021 2500HD Chevy Silverado. It has an in closed transmission. I got under it and couldn’t find this spin off filter. Am I blind or does this truck not have one? Please help 🤓 thank you in advance.
Only 6.6 Liter Duramax-equipped vehicles have the Allison transmission, which means that you have a gasoline engine in your truck.
I wonder why we don’t have a spin on filter on the LM2
Increased efficiency of the internal one but I think it was a stupid mistake from the design engineers. I said what I said.
HANDY TIP
Take a plastic bag (Like the ones you get in the produce section of the grocery store and hold the filter with the bag wrapped around the filter as you take the filter off.
NO ATF dripping down your arm, only dripping into the bag you wrapped around the filter. :)
Word of advice, check your bag for holes. There’s no guarantees in life! 🍻
So do you need to add trans fluid for that little loss or is it ok?
You will lose a little here so just top off.
That's it ?? Should you fill the filter to replace fluid level ??
You can, but still need to check the fluid level on restart.
I don’t, I add to the filler neck under the hood…. Less messy.
A strong rear earth magnet on the outside of your filter will trap ferrous metal particles. And you can move it to the new filter when you service agian. You can do the same thing with engine oil filter also.
Waste of time.
I'm curious, at what point do you lose enough transmission fluid doing this do you need to consider a fluid top off or change??
With anything you do like changing filters you should always check the fluid and top off as necessary.
@@thoroughbreddiesel Thanks for the info, and the reply. Just picked up my first diesel yesterday. A 2019 Silverado 2500 High Country with the beautiful L5P. Love it.
Casey Todd just wait until you put a tune on that thing....
@@kevinswartz2396 I actually found a shop in Florida (I'm in Texas) that specializes in cracking into and tuning the L5P since it's such a booger to tune and delete. The price to do all of the necessary shenanigans was NOT a pretty number.
@@caseytodd7632 so worth it, I like the l5ps but I picked up a 16 LML last year. Just did the full delete last week. AMAZING.
What about the filter inside the transmission
GM doesn’t recommend swapping the internal, until you run into a rebuildable situation. That filter is way more coarse, and would only catch some things from a failure. In other words, don’t worry about it IMHO.
Can a stopped up filter cause my transmission act up? Like jumping outta gear in 4th gear!
Yes. Change the filter may need pan drop and internal filter to wouldn't flush if your having a issue.
CUT N CLEAR !!

You're welcome!
Where do you add trans fluid?
Thru the dipstick tube.
In the gas tank!
In the same place you check the blinker fluid!
J Tomlin in you’re coolant reservoir...
If you put it directly into the air vents you dont even have to open the hood
Do you not add any fluid back?
If needed yes.
My magnet is missing. Just found out after I got filter off

Gloves, box of 100 from Harbor Freight for $7.99, good to have around for stuff like this!

@@segarza Ya I hear that, one in awhile I use real thin painters latex gloves if I'm doing something super greasy.

How often should a complete fluid change happen?
It should be inspected every 15K miles, filters changed and fluid changed at 50K.
Great stuff
However I was ready to change fluid and filter
But looked at Dip Stick and that fluid looks Brand New Crystal Clean
Last year put 700 miles 1 trip
Year before that 2000 miles
2008 Truck only had 61K org miles And has been. Well maintained by a Diesel Mechanic
So am thinking wait and out a few more miles on before change out. Have all the All Parts
Thanks for your great video
I usually don’t change the fluid warm, and I might be wrong on this. However, it doesn’t matter what I do or what precautions I take, I usually wind up WEARING about half of the transmission fluid. It never fails. So for me personally, I don’t change it warm.
does this go for the Allison with 8.1 i got 2006 2500 hd
Yep, same transmission is used with the 8.1L
I will listen to you and change it with my fuel filter thank you
Cheap insurance.
GM recommends 22,500 for fuel filter. The dash DIC matches that. Some guys I know do every 15,000. It will be worse the colder climate you live in. As for the spin on, I do every 10-12.5k miles…. It’s really easy…
news to me, i need to start doing this,
anything els i am missing and need to do to my truck ?
Great advice! LMM Duramax owner!🏁
