Fun fact! Only the males of the species are coloured like that so when they embroider yuan yang couples on wedding gifts, they're almost always depicting male-only couples 🦆🦆
In China there are a lot of mandarin ducks, but I have never seen they bully other ducks. I think the duck is in irritating state because he can't find a female mate. In Chinese old tradition, guests of a wedding always give bride and groom gifts with mandarin ducks patterns on them because mandarin ducks always appear before people in pairs, one male and one female. So the ancient Chinese thought mandarin ducks were the symbol of fidelity in marriage. It was big mistake though. Modern zoological research shows they do always appear in pairs, but they also frequently exchange spouses. The ancient Chinese thought they were conservatives, not knowing they exactly were super liberals. 😜
In Korea, Mandarin Duck is called mandarin duck in Korea. However, this mandarin duck was called the couple's gold thread during a traditional Korean wedding.
In Chinese the bird’s name is called “Yin Yeung” it usually travel in a pair (male and female) it’s a symbol of happy couple. It’s the most common wedding embroidery decoration in Chinese custom.
Most of us may not be able to relate to bird watching, I certainly couldn’t, but sitting outside watching the ducks is surprisingly entertaining. They have their own drama, hostilities, peace making, requirements, oddities etc. I’m hooked. My neighbors watch while I’m at work so we are all informed.

Mandarin duck is a symbol for love in China. We call them yuan yang 鸳鸯.. They always be two together (male and female) in the water, if one dies, the other will not survive a long longer. Traditionally Chinese girl would like embroidered two mandarin ducks (male and female together) on their handkerchiefs and sent it to the young man she loved.
Ingredients: Duck -- 1 whole, about 4 to 5 pounds Chinese five spice powder -- 1 tablespoon Sugar -- 2 teaspoons Salt -- 2 teaspoons Fresh ginger -- 5 big slices Garlic -- 4 cloves Green onion -- 4 stalks Mandarin orange peels -- peel from 1 orange, cut in big strips Rice vinegar -- 1/4 cup Honey -- 1/2 cup Soy sauce -- 1/2 cup Mandarin orange peels Trim the excess fat from the duck in order to produce a crispy skin. Rinse the duck, pat dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, combine the Chinese five-spice powder, salt and sugar. Rub the spice mixture all over the duck, both inside and out. Stuff the duck cavity with ginger, garlic, green onions, and mandarin orange peels. Fold the wing tips back under the duck and tie the legs together with kitchen string. Poke the duck breast a few times, piercing the skin. Place a roasting pan on the stovetop, fill it with with 2-inches of water, turn the heat to medium. Set a V-rack inside the pan and lay the duck on the rack, breast-side up. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Steam the duck for 45 minutes to melt away some of the fat and shrink the skin, checking the water level periodically. In a small saucepan combine the vinegar, honey, and soy sauce over low heat. Bring to a boil and simmer and stir for 15 minutes until sauce thickens. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Take the foil off the duck, remove the rack with the duck, and pour out the water and all the fat that has rendered out. Then put the rack with the duck back inside the roasting pan. Baste the duck with the vinegar mixture, until all the skin is completely coated in the glaze. Put the whole thing in the oven. Roast the duck for 1/2-1 hour, depending on how big your bird is, basting periodically with any remaining glaze. The ideal color is deep mahogany. Cover the breast with some foil if it gets too dark. When your bird is ready, put it under the broiler briefly to make the skin more crisp
