The only difference is that modern materials have more grip and are less likely to fall out of your pocket than a smooth handled traditional knife. I'm not saying don't carry a traditional knife, I'm just telling you that if you are having modern knives fall out of the bottom of your pocket, an old style will be at best the same, but more likely worse. I don't understand your reasoning at all. How on earth do you think this will be better?

+Falney I've worked on Navy ships and in some other interesting environments. Only lost one knife in 19 years of carrying one, and it was my own damn fault, I put it down and must have been distracted or maybe it got pushed off the work space and disappeared, because I didn't realize I had lost it until the next day back on site. By then it was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, I've found a few. The best was a Kershaw Leek. It needed some cleaning up but is a nice little beater to toss in a tool box or take on a picnic. If I lost it, wouldn't care.
Oops. I lost my first Benchmade 940 Osburne too Cody. I just replaced it but now I'm hesitant about carrying it in the woods so I use a belt knife of an old school pocket knife.
I've lost a few too. I don't ever use the clip - due to the loss. So I keep them deep in my pocket. As long as my keys don't grab it as I pull them out, my knife is safe.
Ive got to say Cody I think you would be good with a nice quality neck knife as long as you keep yours tucked under the shirt until needed...I love my pocket folders but reviewing aside I would just use my neck knife for most things....always right there at my chest, also good for using while sitting too...
I have to agree with jeff! I lost several clip knives over the last year! I never carried one until I won a contest of his awhile back and won the crkt minimalist! (Big thanks to cutlery lover for that one!)It's my go to edc forever!
I carry my grandpa's old Old Timer. It's a USA made one, by Shrade, 1080T. Still in very good condition. I feel very fortunate. ;) I suggest you search around antique stores and garage sales. I've found many old USA made, carbon steel knives for cheap.

it's more of a problem with his pants then anything else, ive carried clip knifes for about 9 years and never have I lost one.. It's not fair to blame the clip knives when it's obviously how he carried them.

I have had similar issues with loosening knives because they get caught while working. I seemed to loose them baling hay and straw. I always carry the bales at my right hip and it would seem to catch the clip on my pocket and bend if and slowly loosen up until it got lifted right out of my pocket. I got a good USA made buck knife that I have yet to have any trouble with.
Why don't you jut take the clip off your Benchmade. Problem solved. I recently watched your "Who's Best Benchmade or Spyderco" and it seems as if you're not only changing knives but that you're changing your entire philosophy of carry. There isn't anything wrong with the Benchmade but with the way you carry it correct? I'm not intending to simply be critical but I felt that your reasons for carrying your Benchmade were pretty valid. Now you're intending to go against that philosophy with carrying a Victorinox Tinker which isn't going to be able to handle the cutting jobs that your 940 can.

I'm obviously using a generalization. I watched your video about how you lost your knife. I watch a good deal of your videos and like them but that reply wasn't sincere and I find it a bit insulting to be honest.
Exactly what I was going to suggest. Not sure how Benchmade attaches their clips, but my spyderco allows me to take the clip right off. Spend the money on a quality knife and just take the clip off.

I believe the second to last knife that you looked at was an old Schrade. I got an old Schrade from my Grandfather with the same fish shaped badge and it was made in N.Y. U.S.A.

I've worked for tree services for years and I've learned that branches are like fingers pulling on your knifes and other items. I once lost a watch in a wood chipper, the brush pulled the watch off my wrist and I don't even feel it.
FYI, if I'm looking at it right, the first knife with the "sheepsfoot" blade, that's actually called a "spey blade". You can guess what they were originally used for.
Not true Wranglerstar. I have from day one put the 940 in my pocket. It has never opened up on me, not one time. Are you Clipping that knife with the knife outside your pocket like some one els said? If so, your fault you lost it.
wranglerstar I carry multiple benchmade knives in my pocket with out clips with no issues. I also have a tactical fixed blade artimas benchmade which has an amazing belt clip. All of the clips are removable... you can also get a griptillian which has the ability to add a cord to it for either reflective rope or to run a neckless with it. All of my benchmades are thinner than the ones your showing off in your video. posting a video "im not buying or carrying a knife maker because i loose them" is just not fair to any vendor.
wranglerstar Sometimes I carry a Spyderco Native 1 inside my pocket. The FRN handles are lightweight and never poke me. I use a paracord lanyard to retrieve it from my pocket as the $10 flea market price did not include a pocket clip. Use reflective paracord and you'll be able to find it at night with a flashlight.
Sorry for your loss(es). I've been EDCing my 940 a LOT lately so I know how bummed I would be. I recommend sticking with budget EDC knives if you're worried about losing anymore. I've made some videos on the topic that you might find interesting... :)
Cody its a very misleading title to the video, implying that there is something wrong with benchmade knives. then in the video your saying you personally are not carrying clip knives from any manufacturer because of your own experience with them. I dont think such a title is fare to benchmade or to your viewers
wranglerstar I would hope that if it were a Benchmade representative, they'd be more careful with their grammar and capitalization. Avi makes a good point, though. Your title makes it seem like you have a problem which is specific to Benchmade.
I have a Benchmand 940 and have had it do the same thing. I have also had problems with the springs breaking in the Axis lock. I bought a Emerson CQC 7 (Spear Point) and I find that the extra weight of the Emerson in combination the tight clip against G10 locks it in my pocket snug. I've had zero issues in all different terrain and conditions for over a year now. In fact I just did a one year anniversary video. Lol. My 940 is now collecting dust. I also carry a vintage (1965-1969) Case Bear Head Trapper (with a lot of character) in pocket just as backup. Keep up the great work! -Keith
Cody, I'd go with a small Case knife. Made right here in the USA, traditional style, made right down the road from me. I'd even pick one up from the factory FOR YOU!
OPINEL #8 CARBONE!!!!!!!!!! You wont beat it in that price range for blade quality and because of the birch handle it is so light u wont even know ur carrying a blade. They have made them unchanged for well over 100 years that is a testimony in its self of how good they are. I have carried all kinds of swanky flick open knives but my go to carry is the Opinel #8 carbone
No offence but I have nothing but bad experiences with Opinel and one thing you can't say is that I don't have enough experience and I'll explain... I've been traveling a lot in my life but more so, I've been part of Tom Brown group and many beginners and kids are suggested to get an Opinel. Without fail, all of them get rusty and stuck. The locking snaps out like a bad corck, it's bulky and the metal requires too much attention for a constant working blade. So, Opinel would be an absolute bad choice. Plus, you need to be at a steady and specific weather for it to not simply go all rusty on its own even without any use at all. So maybe you're just lucky to live in a place like that and never realised that this blade is way too delicate for different weather but I'm telling you, I've owned at least 10 and have seen hundreds being used and Opinel is absolutely terrible.
BravingTheOutDoors No offence taken further more don't take offence to my response. Clearly you don't look after the blade. If you buy any high carbon blade regardless of the brand and u don't look after it rust is what you should expect. Keep it oiled. If you are lazy or live in a high humidity environment you should purchase the stainless steel version. I stand by my point that for the money you cant beat it. I do a lot of fishing off shore and do not take any high carbon steel blades on my boat there as they will rust by the time I get home. Stainless is the obvious choice if you are in a high humidity environment. Guess what you can buy stainless steel versions of Opniel so that is clearly the way to go for you in this case. If the locking device is failing clearly there is something wrong with your technique. There should not be so much pressure on the locking device forcing it to close under normal usage conditions for it to fail. You have to be forcing it to close when it is locked open to have it fail So if all u got to say is they rust I say get the stainless version or look after your carbon steel blades like you should be. For special people like yourself I would recommend a non-folding stainless steel blade. You will be much happier. I can't believe it took you at least 10 versions of the same blade to work this out.

justgonnastay I could not disagree more. Why change something that works, is simple and reliable? To change it just for the sake of changing is the most illogical reason of all. Technically they did add the locking device in the 50's so realistically my statement is wrong. But apart from that there has been no changes since original manufacture. They are the definition of perfection.
So what you're saying is... somewhere out their, in the wilderness, there are several of you're beloved folder's, lost. awaiting to be found, an used again...
I went to Cabela's the other day for the first time. Couldn't believe that buck knives were around $150! Used to carry several of those when I was a kid, but never paid more than $20-$30 for them. Times have changed!

Umm I know it's late but you could attach a piece of paracord to a carabiner and then attach that to a belt loop. When you know you are going to be using the knife unhook the carabiner and when you are going to be moving make sure it's secured. I mean what else are lanyard wholes for if not to secure the knife?
There are light weight metal/chain lanyards (about 20" long) which can be attached to the knife's lanyard hole and to a beltloop to prevent lossing your knife. The most simple solution.
or, you could get another Benchmade (or Spyderco, ZT, etc.), thread a nice long piece of para-chord through the lanyard hole, and tie it to your belt loop? I wouldn't give up my Spyderco Domino for anything, much less an issue that has an easy and simple fix that can be made in a few minutes for just $5 and a lighter.... and the second knife had a Wharncliffe blade, not a sheepsfoot. wharnies have flat edges while sheepsfoot blades have a slight swoop to the blade.
I've tried this many-a-time. It's a PITA every time you use your knife because you need to tuck all the paracord away neatly in a way you won't get a tangle the next time you need your knife. I still haven't found a good way to carry a knife.
keifsanderson i see... perhaps you could use one of those auto-retract pen holder things for your car that you could tie around the lanyard hole? that way, it would automatically get out of your way once you put it in your pocket. besides that, a smaller knife like a cold steel mini tuff or a custom kiridashi in a neck carry sheath could suffice with a few mods to the clip to make it stronger.
Tanner saslow I love those auto-retract gizmos. I'm just stuck in a unique situation because of my work wear. But for Codt, I think that would be a solid option. Good call. Manufacturers make all different sizes/capacities of those things, and they are all lightweight and low-profile.
Years upon years of this man losing his 940 then always coming back to it. I’ve had my 940 for 2 years and I just love it. It works as a great work knife as a carpenter
I have carried a Benchmade for many years now, and thankfully I have not lost this one. For Christmas I received a Havalon knife. They use replaceable blades that are easy to switch out and or sharpen. I am not through with the Benchmade but I have never carried a knife this sharp. They are not expensive and seem to fit my needs beautifully right now.
Cody I mean No disrespect but seems ODD to blame Benchmade for when you lose the knife. You figured out the reason you lose the knives is because you get the clips caught on branches. Now your solution is to carry a knife in the pocket. Why not just carry a Benchmade or another in the pocket without the clip. I know all the Benchmade's carry the clips is removable.
I had my SOG Aegis clipped to my pocket, and then I took with me my camera equipment, in a bag around the size of a lunchbox, and apparently there was a loose string on my bag, which caught on my knife when I removed the bag from my neck, I was pissed off because I lost it, moments later I discovered it was there the whole time and I was happy as fuck, I didn't even notice because the knife was black and so was the bag.
I've always grown up with buck as my grandfathers go to brand along with case and I recently got my first buck for Christmas, and out of the box it was cuts-the-hair-off-your-arm sharp and that amazed me, it's sharpness and edge retention have held up with only a little touch up after cutting apart a lot of boxes

Fits in your pocket, good sized blade, and CHEAP. $12 plus shipping from Amazon, and I'm sure you could get a better deal somewhere else if you looked around. My dad has had his forever, my brother used his in the Service and still has it (as well as a larger one of the same design), and I have had one for 6 years or so. made in France, Killer knife.
Same thing happened to my old timer, which I purchased about 2 years ago. Very quickly after receiving the knife I realized the quality wasn't at all what I had expected. My first and so far, last shade.
Some real classics there. My father was a Buck 110 man for years. He always had it on his belt. Now everyone carries clip knives but I have still love my old Swiss Army knife I carried all through high school and college.
I have carried a Benchmade 551 Griptilian Mel Pardue with D2 plain blade for years. I love it! I gave one with S30V blade to an elder friend and one with a 154CM blade to my lawn boy!
+Wranglerstar Maybe I am failing to understand something, but if you are switching over to something like a gentleman's folder to carry in your pocket, couldn't you just remove the pocket clip on any of the clip knives and carry it in your pocket? That would seem to me to be the most prudent course of action.

So Cody I had this issue as well and have found the solution. I broke my leatherman three weeks ago and sent it in for repair in the meantime I got a new bigger leatherman for my bday it has a clip but I was not wanting to have it lifted from my pocket so I fashioned a length of paracord bright color and made a loop at the end. I ran the clip through it and clipped it back to my pocket then I ran it through my belt to secure it when I want to use it I just slide it out of the cord loop and use it. No more lost knife it works with all my clip knives
Enjoy the vid! just a quick info- Ka Bar was a trade mark steel used by Union Cutlery Company up until the second world war when they changed the actual company name to Kabar due to the popularity of their fighting knives. Union made a lot of cutlery with the Kabar name, i have a Union CC Kabar straight razor that is a fine example of an American made tool (still shave with it) when the market was primarily flooded with German made tools. the Kabar name can be found on a variety of things like Scissors, razors, and many different pocket knives. hope this helps!
Never mind. I see below that you don't care for the profile in the pocket. Maybe a little work with some abrasives could reshape it? There certainly is plenty of meat on my Benchmade that could disappear without compromising functionality.
That blade on the Ka-Bar that you didn't know about is a leather punch . Folks who worked with saddles and other tack , always wanted a pocket knife with a leather punch . I once had a case ×× with one.
Why not just say you are done carrying a knife with a pocket clip? Why throw the BENCHMADE name in? For more views? Why can't you periodically check your pocket for your knife after going thru dense brush? Whatever dude, in all honesty I'm about "done" watching your videos.
just thinking about the problem of a knife getting snagged on something and pulled off your pocket, belt, backpack.....what about a chain attached to a belt loop...you would have to unclip ur blade from it for use.....switching from a axis knife to a nail-nick lockback ....?..do you not trust the blade retention of a axis BM enough to keep it in the pocket?....with or without the clip still on?
My EDC is an old(circa 1950) Klein Tools electricians knife. Single blade made of high carbon steel, fits nicely in my front pocket, and it came with a metal loop to attach it to something(which I removed). My wife's great-uncle was an electrician and I found a whole bunch when he passed, but I have ever seen them on eBay for $4-$15 based on condition.
Cody love all my BM knives. Lost two of the same model elisiwitz strikers. Great knife! My wife found replacement of the same on line, very collectable. Now sits in gun safe, only comes out occasionally. My EDC presently, a Sog flash 2. Even though it has a clip, sits in my pocket fine. Good quality, not too big, made in USA and reasonable price. How the hell does a knife just jump out of your pocket if you're using the clip? My mini Griptillian doesn't budge without me pulling it out of my pocket. You must just be careless with your knives or something.
Had the same issue, went with a chineese spyderco $30 3.5" blade large enough to do everything, stay fairly sharp, don't cry if you loose one, and small enough to pocket carry when in the field or hiking.
My EDC is one of my grandpa's older Old Timers. I worked at a hardware store for a while and we started carrying Schrade. I got excited at first, then I handled one of them. It literally weighed about half of my knife of roughly the same appearance and almost felt like it was going to fall apart in my hands... made me pretty sad, and happy that I have a good old one.
Cody, Have you considered Raven Concealment's Modular Pocket Shield? It's a flexible piece of kit that allows you to clip knives, flashlights, magazines, and other EDC items to it. It's meant to be carried in your front pocket keeping your things organized without being clipped to your pocket. Check it out, it may just be the solution to your problem.
I had a Buck 110 for over 20 years. Broke the tip on a Deer's sternum . Had a re shaped by a Knife sharpener that owns a small shop in the next town over. He remade the exact form of the original but a 1/4 of an inch shorter- perfect skinning knife, period. Unfortunately dragging a deer a couple of hundred yards it and it's wonderful leather sheath fell somewhere in the mud out of my haversack ! Broke my heart, lol. But, every day carry is victorinox . Small , utilitarian and fairly rugged.
I carry an old timer as well as a Mora fixed blade when I work in the woods. Have you considered a neck carry of a small fixed blade, something with a 3 - 31/2 blade?
I've got a limited edition Mini Griptillian in CPM M4 which I love and almost lost due to failed pocket clip as well. Now I keep it in my pocket with a short paracord lanyard for easy retrieval
While working I carry a spyderco endura in my little pocketwatch pocket no clip in a pair of jeans. Still sticks out a little but no clip to get caught and pulled
I have been immensely satisfied with my small victorinox. Big blade, small blade, scissors, screwdriver, can opener and awl....I threw away the toothpick and lost the tweezers but I never used them anyway.
Bought a skeletool from leather man I have been happy with it. I find that it is not overtly bulky like many multi tools they kept the design relatively slim. I like it has a carabiner built into the design making it easy to secure it to a belt loop albeit it does have the option of a clip or holster I can relate to the issues of knives working their way loose especially with lots of movement or if your like me finding yourself in awkward body positions at work.
Solid reccomendation from a farm guy, any one of the CRKT M-16 line. I'm currently alternating between the Fossil (small model) for when I'm in town or at the office) and the M21 with the big belly for working/skinning animals/miscellaneous chores. Both super good, excellent locking systems, VERY easy to get out and open, and superb blade material. I trust my life to em, and no regrets yet. Also, both are UNDER $100 U.S.
I got a 940 just a couple weeks ago. I absolutely love it, but I've already snagged the clip twice. I was carrying a skyline for a couple years before and never had that problem. Is there a replacement clip for the 940 out there that doesn't snag as easy?
As a 940 EDC carrier I am sad for you. I force myself to get in the pelican case every few weeks and pick something else. Somehow, it only seems to stay out for one day. Including a few Sebenza choices. I have a lot of great knives but I love the 940 Osborne. I don't slog through the brambles every day though. I usually carry an Emerson or other thicker beefier blade down in the pocket for hunting and bush humping. I also love the Kershaw Skyline. It is a really good knife for the price. And the price is pretty darn reasonable. Maybe frustrating to lose one but it would not cause me to tear up like losing a 940 Osborne. Can't wait to see what you are going to go with.
I wonder if a j-hook clip (like on firearm holsters) with a paddle system and slight protrusion to act as a finger switch would be a good solution. It would be more difficult to fall off accidentally.
I an a forester and stopped carrying pocket clip knives years ago because they invariably get lost in the woods sooner or later. It either has to be on your belt or in your pocket.
I love old folding knives, Im a bit of a collector.. Not a serious one, But I have a dozen or so. My EDC for work is a Kershaw Leek, But i also have a benchmade barrage that I carry when Im not at work..Love the videos..
Cody, I have been extremely fortunate to have only ever lost one knife I have ever owned. One solution you could have used that would have saved your knives from the tree's would have been to use a Benchmade model or any knife model that featured a lanyard hole. Then all you would of had to do is lanyard it to your belt or belt loop and if for whatever reason you needed more length just unclip or undue the loop finish the task and then refasten the lanyard. You would never have lost even one knife unless, somehow the lanyard broke.
I carry my great grandfathers Schrade, that along with my kershaw blur. I spend some time refurbishing the Schrade works well for small stuff and it's great to carry a piece of my family history around everyday.
I went to a lock blade knife, never to return to one that did not lock in place after using the tip of a regular pocket knife on a wood project, only to have it unexpectedly, & forcefully fold on me, cutting my finger. I now just carry a lock blade knife with a clip in my pocket, as I was unwilling to take the clip off. The downside however is, that it is a weight in my pocket, which will eventually wear a hole in the pocket, not to mention the lint that accumulates in it. I've run into some of the same issues as you have, in trying to find that perfect personal tool.
I don't know if this is too obvious, but if you weren't digging the pocket clip style carry, you can always just remove the pocket clip and carry the knife in the pocket just as you would carry a classic pocket knife like the ones you showed here. I've gotten in the habit of removing the pocket clips from my folding knives lately because I've found the pocket clip digs into the palm when using the knife for long periods of time and quickly becomes very uncomfortable. I've found that the knives are *much more* comfortable without the pocket clips and feel more reminiscent of a fixed blade in the hand. Give it a try with one of your benchmade or other pocket clip style carry knives. I really think you may prefer it! =) good luck!
Opinel No. 8. They will hold an edge really well and they are comfortable in the pocket. You can buy them by the case and not lose too much sleep over losing one.
Stick with case knives there my favorite personally I work in a metal fab shop and mines has held up to years of abuse easy to sharpen and made in the US they hold a wicked edge too
The Knife I love the most and will always buy is the CRKT M16 series knives with double sided guard. if you put the handle clip on the other side and backwards you can put the knife into your pocket tip up and they deploy when you remove them from your pocket with one hand.
I like my gerber paraframe II. It was fairly cheap, holds an edge well, sturdy, removable pocket clip, locking mechanism, feels good in the hand, decently balanced, looks cool, and easy to clean. Had it for a few years now and it still does just as well as the day I bought it.
I took the clip from my benchmade and stuck the tip into a vice and slightly bent it so it creates less surface to snag on other things. I can still slide it onto my jeans pocket with no problem, but it is far less likely to snag anything else, since it has a slight curve. Give it a try and you'll keep carrying a pocket clip knife. I haven't lost one yet, since I did this to mine.

I have never lost a pocket knife when it was clipped in my pocket, I'm 43 been carrying a blade since I was 8

The only difference is that modern materials have more grip and are less likely to fall out of your pocket than a smooth handled traditional knife.
I'm not saying don't carry a traditional knife, I'm just telling you that if you are having modern knives fall out of the bottom of your pocket, an old style will be at best the same, but more likely worse.

Only lost one knife in 19 years of carrying one, and it was my own damn fault, I put it down and must have been distracted or maybe it got pushed off the work space and disappeared, because I didn't realize I had lost it until the next day back on site. By then it was nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, I've found a few. The best was a Kershaw Leek. It needed some cleaning up but is a nice little beater to toss in a tool box or take on a picnic. If I lost it, wouldn't care.
Oops. I lost my first Benchmade 940 Osburne too Cody. I just replaced it but now I'm hesitant about carrying it in the woods so I use a belt knife of an old school pocket knife.
I would go for a new Chinese made Schrade, that way when you lose it you will actually be happy. Problem solved.
I've lost a few too. I don't ever use the clip - due to the loss. So I keep them deep in my pocket. As long as my keys don't grab it as I pull them out, my knife is safe.
Ive got to say Cody I think you would be good with a nice quality neck knife as long as you keep yours tucked under the shirt until needed...I love my pocket folders but reviewing aside I would just use my neck knife for most things....always right there at my chest, also good for using while sitting too...

I have to agree with jeff! I lost several clip knives over the last year! I never carried one until I won a contest of his awhile back and won the crkt minimalist! (Big thanks to cutlery lover for that one!)It's my go to edc forever!
There's definite disadvantages to a neck knife, I keep my TOPS mini scandi in my right pocket for EDC rather than around my neck.
I personally don't like having a cord around my neck. To dangerous for the type of work I do. Gives someone a good "ripcord" too.

I carry my grandpa's old Old Timer. It's a USA made one, by Shrade, 1080T. Still in very good condition. I feel very fortunate. ;) I suggest you search around antique stores and garage sales. I've found many old USA made, carbon steel knives for cheap.

I have had similar issues with loosening knives because they get caught while working. I seemed to loose them baling hay and straw. I always carry the bales at my right hip and it would seem to catch the clip on my pocket and bend if and slowly loosen up until it got lifted right out of my pocket. I got a good USA made buck knife that I have yet to have any trouble with.
Why don't you jut take the clip off your Benchmade. Problem solved. I recently watched your "Who's Best Benchmade or Spyderco" and it seems as if you're not only changing knives but that you're changing your entire philosophy of carry. There isn't anything wrong with the Benchmade but with the way you carry it correct? I'm not intending to simply be critical but I felt that your reasons for carrying your Benchmade were pretty valid. Now you're intending to go against that philosophy with carrying a Victorinox Tinker which isn't going to be able to handle the cutting jobs that your 940 can.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Not sure how Benchmade attaches their clips, but my spyderco allows me to take the clip right off. Spend the money on a quality knife and just take the clip off.

I've worked for tree services for years and I've learned that branches are like fingers pulling on your knifes and other items. I once lost a watch in a wood chipper, the brush pulled the watch off my wrist and I don't even feel it.
FYI, if I'm looking at it right, the first knife with the "sheepsfoot" blade, that's actually called a "spey blade". You can guess what they were originally used for.

Not true Wranglerstar. I have from day one put the 940 in my pocket. It has never opened up on me, not one time. Are you Clipping that knife with the knife outside your pocket like some one els said? If so, your fault you lost it.
wranglerstar I carry multiple benchmade knives in my pocket with out clips with no issues. I also have a tactical fixed blade artimas benchmade which has an amazing belt clip. All of the clips are removable... you can also get a griptillian which has the ability to add a cord to it for either reflective rope or to run a neckless with it. All of my benchmades are thinner than the ones your showing off in your video. posting a video "im not buying or carrying a knife maker because i loose them" is just not fair to any vendor.
wranglerstar Sometimes I carry a Spyderco Native 1 inside my pocket. The FRN handles are lightweight and never poke me. I use a paracord lanyard to retrieve it from my pocket as the $10 flea market price did not include a pocket clip. Use reflective paracord and you'll be able to find it at night with a flashlight.
Sorry for your loss(es). I've been EDCing my 940 a LOT lately so I know how bummed I would be. I recommend sticking with budget EDC knives if you're worried about losing anymore. I've made some videos on the topic that you might find interesting... :)
Cody its a very misleading title to the video, implying that there is something wrong with benchmade knives. then in the video your saying you personally are not carrying clip knives from any manufacturer because of your own experience with them. I have a Benchmand 940 and have had it do the same thing. I have also had problems with the springs breaking in the Axis lock. I bought a Emerson CQC 7 (Spear Point) and I find that the extra weight of the Emerson in combination the tight clip against G10 locks it in my pocket snug. I've had zero issues in all different terrain and conditions for over a year now. In fact I just did a one year anniversary video. Lol. My 940 is now collecting dust. I also carry a vintage (1965-1969) Case Bear Head Trapper (with a lot of character) in pocket just as backup. Keep up the great work! -Keith

OPINEL #8 CARBONE!!!!!!!!!! You wont beat it in that price range for blade quality and because of the birch handle it is so light u wont even know ur carrying a blade. They have made them unchanged for well over 100 years that is a testimony in its self of how good they are.

No offence but I have nothing but bad experiences with Opinel and one thing you can't say is that I don't have enough experience and I'll explain...
I've been traveling a lot in my life but more so, I've been part of Tom Brown group and many beginners and kids are suggested to get an Opinel.
Without fail, all of them get rusty and stuck. The locking snaps out like a bad corck, it's bulky and the metal requires too much attention for a constant working blade.
So, Opinel would be an absolute bad choice.
Plus, you need to be at a steady and specific weather for it to not simply go all rusty on its own even without any use at all.
So maybe you're just lucky to live in a place like that and never realised that this blade is way too delicate for different weather but I'm telling you, I've owned at least 10 and have seen hundreds being used and Opinel is absolutely terrible.

Clearly you don't look after the blade. If you buy any high carbon blade regardless of the brand and u don't look after it rust is what you should expect. Keep it oiled. If you are lazy or live in a high humidity environment you should purchase the stainless steel version.
I stand by my point that for the money you cant beat it. I do a lot of fishing off shore and do not take any high carbon steel blades on my boat there as they will rust by the time I get home.
Stainless is the obvious choice if you are in a high humidity environment. Guess what you can buy stainless steel versions of Opniel so that is clearly the way to go for you in this case.
If the locking device is failing clearly there is something wrong with your technique. There should not be so much pressure on the locking device forcing it to close under normal usage conditions for it to fail. You have to be forcing it to close when it is locked open to have it fail
So if all u got to say is they rust I say get the stainless version or look after your carbon steel blades like you should be.
For special people like yourself I would recommend a non-folding stainless steel blade. You will be much happier. I can't believe it took you at least 10 versions of the same blade to work this out.

Technically they did add the locking device in the 50's so realistically my statement is wrong. But apart from that there has been no changes since original manufacture. They are the definition of perfection.

I went to Cabela's the other day for the first time. Couldn't believe that buck knives were around $150! Used to carry several of those when I was a kid, but never paid more than $20-$30 for them. Times have changed!

Umm I know it's late but you could attach a piece of paracord to a carabiner and then attach that to a belt loop. When you know you are going to be using the knife unhook the carabiner and when you are going to be moving make sure it's secured. I mean what else are lanyard wholes for if not to secure the knife?
Why not just put the the benchmade or clipknife inside your pocket? You could even remove the clip

There are light weight metal/chain lanyards (about 20" long) which can be attached to the knife's lanyard hole and to a beltloop to prevent lossing your knife. The most simple solution.
or, you could get another Benchmade (or Spyderco, ZT, etc.), thread a nice long piece of para-chord through the lanyard hole, and tie it to your belt loop? I wouldn't give up my Spyderco Domino for anything, much less an issue that has an easy and simple fix that can be made in a few minutes for just $5 and a lighter....
and the second knife had a Wharncliffe blade, not a sheepsfoot. wharnies have flat edges while sheepsfoot blades have a slight swoop to the blade.
I've tried this many-a-time. It's a PITA every time you use your knife because you need to tuck all the paracord away neatly in a way you won't get a tangle the next time you need your knife. I still haven't found a good way to carry a knife.
keifsanderson i see... perhaps you could use one of those auto-retract pen holder things for your car that you could tie around the lanyard hole? that way, it would automatically get out of your way once you put it in your pocket. besides that, a smaller knife like a cold steel mini tuff or a custom kiridashi in a neck carry sheath could suffice with a few mods to the clip to make it stronger.
Tanner saslow I love those auto-retract gizmos. I'm just stuck in a unique situation because of my work wear. But for Codt, I think that would be a solid option. Good call. Manufacturers make all different sizes/capacities of those things, and they are all lightweight and low-profile.

I have carried a Benchmade for many years now, and thankfully I have not lost this one. For Christmas I received a Havalon knife. They use replaceable blades that are easy to switch out and or sharpen. I am not through with the Benchmade but I have never carried a knife this sharp. They are not expensive and seem to fit my needs beautifully right now.

Cody I mean No disrespect but seems ODD to blame Benchmade for when you lose the knife. You figured out the reason you lose the knives is because you get the clips caught on branches. Now your solution is to carry a knife in the pocket. Why not just carry a Benchmade or another in the pocket without the clip. I know all the Benchmade's carry the clips is removable.

The edges on the handle of the knife will wear through the inside of your pocket. Look how smooth those old style pocket knives are.
I had my SOG Aegis clipped to my pocket, and then I took with me my camera equipment, in a bag around the size of a lunchbox, and apparently there was a loose string on my bag, which caught on my knife when I removed the bag from my neck, I was pissed off because I lost it, moments later I discovered it was there the whole time and I was happy as fuck, I didn't even notice because the knife was black and so was the bag.

Victorinox Swiss Army knife. I would highly recommend the Tinker for a good pocket knife.
I've always grown up with buck as my grandfathers go to brand along with case and I recently got my first buck for Christmas, and out of the box it was cuts-the-hair-off-your-arm sharp and that amazed me, it's sharpness and edge retention have held up with only a little touch up after cutting apart a lot of boxes

Fits in your pocket, good sized blade, and CHEAP. $12 plus shipping from Amazon, and I'm sure you could get a better deal somewhere else if you looked around. My dad has had his forever, my brother used his in the Service and still has it (as well as a larger one of the same design), and I have had one for 6 years or so. made in France, Killer knife.

Super Tinker has been my EDC for about 2 years now, replaced my Leatherman Rebar when I started working in the city.
Some real classics there. My father was a Buck 110 man for years. He always had it on his belt. Now everyone carries clip knives but I have still love my old Swiss Army knife I carried all through high school and college.

I have carried a Benchmade 551 Griptilian Mel Pardue with D2 plain blade for years. I love it! I gave one with S30V blade to an elder friend and one with a 154CM blade to my lawn boy!

So Cody I had this issue as well and have found the solution. I broke my leatherman three weeks ago and sent it in for repair in the meantime I got a new bigger leatherman for my bday it has a clip but I was not wanting to have it lifted from my pocket so I fashioned a length of paracord bright color and made a loop at the end. I ran the clip through it and clipped it back to my pocket then I ran it through my belt to secure it when I want to use it I just slide it out of the cord loop and use it. No more lost knife it works with all my clip knives

That 3rd "blade" on the kabar is a rope pick, It's main purpose is to help loosen knots in ropes. You often find them on "sailor's knives".

Enjoy the vid! just a quick info- Ka Bar was a trade mark steel used by Union Cutlery Company up until the second world war when they changed the actual company name to Kabar due to the popularity of their fighting knives. Union made a lot of cutlery with the Kabar name, i have a Union CC Kabar straight razor that is a fine example of an American made tool (still shave with it) when the market was primarily flooded with German made tools. the Kabar name can be found on a variety of things like Scissors, razors, and many different pocket knives. hope this helps!

That blade on the Ka-Bar that you didn't know about is a leather punch . Folks who worked with saddles and other tack , always wanted a pocket knife with a leather punch . I once had a case ×× with one.

just thinking about the problem of a knife getting snagged on something and pulled off your pocket, belt, backpack.....what about a chain attached to a belt loop...you would have to unclip ur blade from it for use.....switching from a axis knife to a nail-nick lockback ....?..do you not trust the blade retention of a axis BM enough to keep it in the pocket?....with or without the clip still on?
My EDC is an old(circa 1950) Klein Tools electricians knife. Single blade made of high carbon steel, fits nicely in my front pocket, and it came with a metal loop to attach it to something(which I removed).
My wife's great-uncle was an electrician and I found a whole bunch when he passed, but I have ever seen them on eBay for $4-$15 based on condition.
Cody love all my BM knives. Lost two of the same model elisiwitz strikers. Great knife! My wife found replacement of the same on line, very collectable. Now sits in gun safe, only comes out occasionally. My EDC presently, a Sog flash 2. Even though it has a clip, sits in my pocket fine. Good quality, not too big, made in USA and reasonable price. How the hell does a knife just jump out of your pocket if you're using the clip? My mini Griptillian doesn't budge without me pulling it out of my pocket. You must just be careless with your knives or something.

Had the same issue, went with a chineese spyderco $30 3.5" blade large enough to do everything, stay fairly sharp, don't cry if you loose one, and small enough to pocket carry when in the field or hiking.
My EDC is one of my grandpa's older Old Timers. I worked at a hardware store for a while and we started carrying Schrade. I got excited at first, then I handled one of them. It literally weighed about half of my knife of roughly the same appearance and almost felt like it was going to fall apart in my hands... made me pretty sad, and happy that I have a good old one.

Have you considered Raven Concealment's Modular Pocket Shield? It's a flexible piece of kit that allows you to clip knives, flashlights, magazines, and other EDC items to it. It's meant to be carried in your front pocket keeping your things organized without being clipped to your pocket. Check it out, it may just be the solution to your problem.
I had a Buck 110 for over 20 years. Broke the tip on a Deer's sternum . Had a re shaped by a Knife sharpener that owns a small shop in the next town over. He remade the exact form of the original but a 1/4 of an inch shorter- perfect skinning knife, period. Unfortunately dragging a deer a couple of hundred yards it and it's wonderful leather sheath fell somewhere in the mud out of my haversack ! Broke my heart, lol. But, every day carry is victorinox . Small , utilitarian and fairly rugged.
I carry an old timer as well as a Mora fixed blade when I work in the woods. Have you considered a neck carry of a small fixed blade, something with a 3 - 31/2 blade?
I've got a limited edition Mini Griptillian in CPM M4 which I love and almost lost due to failed pocket clip as well. Now I keep it in my pocket with a short paracord lanyard for easy retrieval
While working I carry a spyderco endura in my little pocketwatch pocket no clip in a pair of jeans. Still sticks out a little but no clip to get caught and pulled
I have been immensely satisfied with my small victorinox. Big blade, small blade, scissors, screwdriver, can opener and awl....I threw away the toothpick and lost the tweezers but I never used them anyway.
Bought a skeletool from leather man I have been happy with it. I find that it is not overtly bulky like many multi tools they kept the design relatively slim. I like it has a carabiner built into the design making it easy to secure it to a belt loop albeit it does have the option of a clip or holster I can relate to the issues of knives working their way loose especially with lots of movement or if your like me finding yourself in awkward body positions at work.
Solid reccomendation from a farm guy, any one of the CRKT M-16 line. I'm currently alternating between the Fossil (small model) for when I'm in town or at the office) and the M21 with the big belly for working/skinning animals/miscellaneous chores. Both super good, excellent locking systems, VERY easy to get out and open, and superb blade material. I trust my life to em, and no regrets yet. Also, both are UNDER $100 U.S.

I got a 940 just a couple weeks ago. I absolutely love it, but I've already snagged the clip twice. I was carrying a skyline for a couple years before and never had that problem. Is there a replacement clip for the 940 out there that doesn't snag as easy?
As a 940 EDC carrier I am sad for you. I force myself to get in the pelican case every few weeks and pick something else. Somehow, it only seems to stay out for one day. Including a few Sebenza choices. I have a lot of great knives but I love the 940 Osborne. I don't slog through the brambles every day though. I usually carry an Emerson or other thicker beefier blade down in the pocket for hunting and bush humping.
I also love the Kershaw Skyline. It is a really good knife for the price. And the price is pretty darn reasonable. Maybe frustrating to lose one but it would not cause me to tear up like losing a 940 Osborne. Can't wait to see what you are going to go with.
I wonder if a j-hook clip (like on firearm holsters) with a paddle system and slight protrusion to act as a finger switch would be a good solution. It would be more difficult to fall off accidentally.
The one with no marking is a soligen surgical steel knife my grandfather passed away and I got one very similar to that one.
I an a forester and stopped carrying pocket clip knives years ago because they invariably get lost in the woods sooner or later. It either has to be on your belt or in your pocket.
Very sad to hear you lost your Benchmade, I really like the design of that particular knife and yours had a lovely used patina.
I love old folding knives, Im a bit of a collector.. Not a serious one, But I have a dozen or so. My EDC for work is a Kershaw Leek, But i also have a benchmade barrage that I carry when Im not at work..Love the videos..
Cody, I have been extremely fortunate to have only ever lost one knife I have ever owned. One solution you could have used that would have saved your knives from the tree's would have been to use a Benchmade model or any knife model that featured a lanyard hole. Then all you would of had to do is lanyard it to your belt or belt loop and if for whatever reason you needed more length just unclip or undue the loop finish the task and then refasten the lanyard. You would never have lost even one knife unless, somehow the lanyard broke.

I carry my great grandfathers Schrade, that along with my kershaw blur. I spend some time refurbishing the Schrade works well for small stuff and it's great to carry a piece of my family history around everyday.
I went to a lock blade knife, never to return to one that did not lock in place after using the tip of a regular pocket knife on a wood project, only to have it unexpectedly, & forcefully fold on me, cutting my finger. I now just carry a lock blade knife with a clip in my pocket, as I was unwilling to take the clip off. The downside however is, that it is a weight in my pocket, which will eventually wear a hole in the pocket, not to mention the lint that accumulates in it. I've run into some of the same issues as you have, in trying to find that perfect personal tool.
I don't know if this is too obvious, but if you weren't digging the pocket clip style carry, you can always just remove the pocket clip and carry the knife in the pocket just as you would carry a classic pocket knife like the ones you showed here.
I've gotten in the habit of removing the pocket clips from my folding knives lately because I've found the pocket clip digs into the palm when using the knife for long periods of time and quickly becomes very uncomfortable. I've found that the knives are *much more* comfortable without the pocket clips and feel more reminiscent of a fixed blade in the hand. Give it a try with one of your benchmade or other pocket clip style carry knives. I really think you may prefer it! =) good luck!
Opinel No. 8. They will hold an edge really well and they are comfortable in the pocket. You can buy them by the case and not lose too much sleep over losing one.
Stick with case knives there my favorite personally I work in a metal fab shop and mines has held up to years of abuse easy to sharpen and made in the US they hold a wicked edge too
what about removing the clip from a benchmade, spyderco ect. and making it an in the pocket knife?
The Knife I love the most and will always buy is the CRKT M16 series knives with double sided guard. if you put the handle clip on the other side and backwards you can put the knife into your pocket tip up and they deploy when you remove them from your pocket with one hand.
I like my gerber paraframe II. It was fairly cheap, holds an edge well, sturdy, removable pocket clip, locking mechanism, feels good in the hand, decently balanced, looks cool, and easy to clean. Had it for a few years now and it still does just as well as the day I bought it.
I just bought a mini one of the old-timers and am very impressed!
I took the clip from my benchmade and stuck the tip into a vice and slightly bent it so it creates less surface to snag on other things. I can still slide it onto my jeans pocket with no problem, but it is far less likely to snag anything else, since it has a slight curve. Give it a try and you'll keep carrying a pocket clip knife. I haven't lost one yet, since I did this to mine.
