Wranglerstar: spends five minutes talking about why the name fastball makes no sense *Procedes to talk for five minutes about the ball bearing and how fast they are
You can rant all you want. I've seen adverts that go a lot crazier to get their product name, brand, and quality out there. Here we have a comprehensive history of the brand and guess what? You're not going to forget the name of the knife, how it works and what it costs. At $100, I believe Gerber couldn't have made a better advertising investment.

@Christian Dinero Benchmade helped a police department destroy guns that should have been sold to a wholesaler and not wasted. In addition (and more damning to most outdoorsmen) it came to light that Benchmade has donated RIDICULOUS amounts to anti-gun politicians. Of course, Benchmade corporate sleazeballs and some low-honor Benchmade apologists say "They're just contributing to politicians who support the knife industry" which is a baseless copout. Leftist politicians will say anything to get more money, more power, more control (sand yes, I know some conservative ones will do the same, but nowhere near as bad as the Communists on the fringe left) and while they may present themselves as "knife-friendly" now, if the time comes that they get all guns outlawed (which is what all the leftists want, and if they claim otherwise they're straight up lying) the next thing they'll do is start to put as many restrictions on knives as they can get. Just look to London to see the truth of that. The corporate slimes behind Benchmade are anti-gun, or if they personally are not (which I'm more than willing to bet they are) they support politicians who are. Randall P damn that’s really disappointing because I like knives as well as guns. What a shame because benchmade makes good knives. However, I’m not willing to support something that is against our freedom.
I had both a Gerber Mark I and still have my Gerber Mark II, both bought in like 1978 down in Texas. The Mark II is in brand new condition, kept in a case these forty-plus years. Where is the Mark I with its premium brown leather sheath? My then-girlfriend and I were visiting old friends of hers in Athens, Georgia, and this one couple were really sweet and the husband really liked the Mark I, but they were living in a trailer and I could tell he couldn't afford one. So I just gave it to him, right there on the spot because he liked it so much, and I didn't want him going without and feeling shitty because of his financial situation at the time. Best thing I ever did because I miss that knife so much today, and that makes it even more meaningful. I hope it's still as razor sharp as it was the day I gave it to him, and that it has served him well. I don't even remember his name.
Nice review! It’s always good to hear the opinions of someone who has actually carried and used the knife for a while. I checked out the Fastball recently, and the only thing that hat kept me from buying one, was the liner lock. A frame lock would have made the knife thinner, while providing a strong, secure lockup.
Great video ! I've carried a Kershaw Leek for ... the past 3 years or so, and it seems to have similar features than this one. USA made, which for me, has always carried the ideal of "Quality" and "Made to outlast you". My Kershaw, and those knives you've presented all have this to them. Thanks for the vids Cody, keep it up. Cheers from Belgium.
My dad is a custom knife maker and I can honestly say that the 940 is the only production knife that I have or will carry. Thanks to your reviews I bought one and have never regretted it. Now that dad has pretty much quit making knives all together the 940 stays in my pocket and the ones that he made are to be passed down as air looms to our children. Again thanks for the introduction to the Bench-made brand.
They're good overall. A lot of their knives are made in china with cheaper materials but you can't go wrong with any of the USA made knives or really any of the knifes using 14c28n/420hc steel or better
I carry a leek, Bought one for my wife too. I also had a third one but I gave it to a buddy. It’s a great light duty EDC knife, And really good for food prep
im guess you know, but in case you don't, keep those magnets (on torch) away from your automatic watch, even 'anti magnetic' watches will mess up if you put a strong magnet right next to it.
I was at walmart one day and my dad said something like oh hey a Grerber they are great and I asked him "when were you born" (and it was before fiskars bought gerber) and just said "that explains alot"
Very entertaining, honest review. Snorkeling in Gallatin River, MT, I found Kershaw Leek 3" Wharncliffe assisted opener w/ stainless integral frame lock. Absolutely the best EDC knife. Very smooth handle shape / design by Ken Onion. As you say, retrieving slivers & splinters is of major importance, and having a knife handy for opening packages, cutting string, webbing, and sharpening pencil is a must. I disagree w/ you re pocket clip. LEEK carries deep and secure. More secure and more comfortable than flopping around in pants pocket. If you like the assisted opening feature, I suggest you take a look at the KERSHAW LEEK and KERSHAW DIVIDEND. 1/2 the price of the FASTBALL. For the money, Fastball is definitely reasonable S30v and made in USA. Leek and Dividend are affordable alternatives that just might tick your boxes. As for the OSBORNE -- I had one, and returned it. Could not understand all the hype, and overall the knife just didn't wow me. Ugliest color handle. If Benchmade would simply offer the 940 with black, silver or grey handle, I might give it another look. However, with that said, for less money, I would probably get SPYDERCO PARA MIL II.
Couldn't agree more about those SOS/Strobe modes on flashlights Cody. However, there are a whole buncha really great folders that AREN'T made by Benchmade, and are a better value. Best budget folder for my money is an Ontario RAT 1.
My Dad taught me "A Thing of Two" out in the woods about logging and staying alive, like when the cat skinner says, "Get *out* of the way." it means *WAY* out of the way. Not just barely enough! I had no idea what he really meant . . . _until I _*_learned_*_ a thing or two!_
I bent and broke my benchmade’s pocket clip when it caught a seatbelt. I replaced it with a titanium clip i found online and love it! It’s thick, strong, and doesnt protrude as much as the factory clip. That really helps keep it from catching stuff. It’s also shaped so my knife sits deeper in my pocket, which also helps keep it from falling out. It’s a knife i’d really rather not loose!
I have always liked gerber knifes, I had a gerber knife as a kid that I lost in my grandfathers yard and he gave it back to me a few years later. It had a bit of rust and stuff, Well I ended up sending it to them to get it fixed. They sent it back all good. Personally I like pocket clips, Never had it come off in the woods. Good video, Thank you.
You know, it's almost like they designed the 'Fastball' in the same style as the 1776 + Kershaw Leek, then tookthe same blade steel and aluminium handle from the 940, then the 'Fastball' was born. The name _really_ cheapens the knife in my opinion.
I have fallen in love with the Kershaw Leek, really thin so easy to carry and open(as long as you remove the lame safety). Very similar to your Gerber.
Axis lock >>> liner lock every time... if you like the assisted opening, go for a benchmade barrage or mini-barrage. I have the mini-barrage and absolutely love using the thing. Sturdy, has some heft but not too much, can lock closed or double lock open, and great blade shape and steel
I too have a Gerber A400. I bought mine new about 1990. It's never been used except cutting some paper to test sharpness! I wrapped 3/4 of the handle with camo 550 paracord. It gives it a better purchase an looks pretty cool! I think this is chrome plated! Very unusual.
I absolutely love my 940-1 its just a bit higher end than the 940 it cuts like a beast and is light as all . I dig the carbon fiber look. I am however a collector and hard user so my stuff has to be made well and tough to last
I love the bugout. Carried it for over a year every day. Not one complaint. Have a 940-2 also so i can compair to your 940. One month is still in the honeymoon phase for the gerber.
I personally like frame lock folding knifes. The thin metal lock holding the blade open had always bothered me, like on the gerber. That blade is a lite duty knife only. Frame lock , way more robust.
@@BryceKimball7.3 I haven't held that one, but the Manix 2 & Paramilitary 2 feel too blocky. They just sit in my room collecting dust because I never carry them.
Gerber made a SF fighting knife during the Vietnam War. Some of them had a 5 degree cant on the handle. This allowed a better fit at the waist. It tucked in tighter.
I bought a $100+ Gerber knife with 154cm blade steel, made in the USA, and a bendy plastic handle that you might expect on a knife with a plastic blade in the toy section. I was like, “What The!?”. One hand sticky opening that you really needed two hands for. Hot spots for days, even though I didn’t trust it enough to put much pressure on it. Last Gerber product I’ll buy. I then bought a $25 Schrade that was 50 times the knife. Not as sharp out of the box, no fancy steel, but I’ll tell you what: The handle ain’t gonna break and put my hand into the blade. The only other Gerber I had was a compact multitool that had the backspring on the knife blade collapse. I have never broken a knife or multitool from a reputable name before or since. Had the same Victorinox Electrician for 14 years and I gave it away fully functional after daily use.
It’s called a “Wharnecliffe” blade shape. Named after Lord Wharnecliffe in England many years ago who commissioned a new design for hunting and skinning. There’s your worthless knowledge for the day. 😂
A real wharnecliffe blade has a completely flat edge. The edge on that Gerber sweeps up, so its not a real wharnecliffe at all. People are calling everything a "wharnecliffe" now because it's trendy. Just stop.
BornIn1500- They’ve evolved a bit since 1820 for sure... but still a Wharnecliffe if the spine has a sweep down to a point. The minor up swept edge doesn’t disqualify it from being a Wharnecliffe style blade... Here is an excerpt from a Knife Depot Blog... “The standard definition has since broadened a bit to include any blade with a straight edge that tapers toward a point. (Although I’d argue some light curves in the blade don’t immediately disqualify it from being a Wharncliffe.) The Wharncliffe is widely mixed up with the sheepsfoot blade and lesser known lambsfoot blade. In fact, manufacturers will often mislabel the blade style. Whereas the Wharncliffe has a spine that gradually tapers to a point, the sheepsfoot blade has a spine and edge that remains parallel until the spine more dramatically curves to the edge. The result is lack of a piercing point”
@@neeko7878 I wouldn't say they've "evolved". It's that every design has been done many times over, so people are making every different shape they possibly can to differentiate themselves. And in the process, the specific definition of terms are being manipulated to mean something completely different. Wharncliffe used to mean something VERY specific. Now since people bastardized it, when people say "wharncliffe", nobody knows what the hell we're talking about since it's so broad. People have completely ruined it. That's a bad thing.
Great video! I was so excited to hear gerber might actually be back. I just ordered one and the tension that holds the blade shut is so tight you literally can’t open it with one hand. I’d suggest waiting till the smooth out the kinks because I’d expect a 100 dollar knife to be perfect and I don’t even think this is repairable. Quite frustrating.

I hope it's still as razor sharp as it was the day I gave it to him, and that it has served him well. I don't even remember his name.
That Gerber shorty did not cost $15 and a pixie did not cost $10. I bought those knives in the 70"s and still have them
"You didn't buy them for a certain price because I bought them for a different price"
Nice review! It’s always good to hear the opinions of someone who has actually carried and used the knife for a while. I checked out the Fastball recently, and the only thing that hat kept me from buying one, was the liner lock. A frame lock would have made the knife thinner, while providing a strong, secure lockup.
When Fiskars took over Gerber the heritage was lost
Right! Something lost on most when a great and proven name is absorbed by another company.
Ruike p801 ball bearings, stainless handle and good steel for around $35 opens amazing. It's a great knife
“... It opens FAST ...”
“.... It works FAST because of the BALL bearings... “
I have the benchmade bugout and I drove over it with my suv on concrete and it still works just fine.
Benchmade also has a superior heat treat on their s30v, definitely better than Gerber's.
No! Benchmade destroyed Benchmade Gerber just filled the void
You should definitely check out the Kershaw Leek, it has been my favorite EDC for probably 6 yrs.
Yeah, my first thought was "Hey! That looks a lot like the Kershaw Leek." I have had several leeks for ages. They are great, affordable knives.
How do you feel about Kershaw? I carry one as my EDC.
I have two Leeks and just ordered a Scallion.
Thicc Boy The blur is probably my favorite knife as well!
CRKT makes some great knives in that price range.
im guess you know, but in case you don't, keep those magnets (on torch) away from your automatic watch, even 'anti magnetic' watches will mess up if you put a strong magnet right next to it.
I was at walmart one day and my dad said something like oh hey a Grerber they are great and I asked him "when were you born" (and it was before fiskars bought gerber) and just said "that explains alot"
But fiskars is goddam awesome
You should try a Kershaw speedsafe knife theyre finger flick opening is amazing super fun and fast and easy to open and kershaw knives are great
Legal too 😎
I won a 940 in a raffle the day, I was pumped! Awesome knife for sure. Great video brother. 👍🏼
"Gerber Wranglestar", that sounds better.
Couldn't agree more about those SOS/Strobe modes on flashlights Cody. However, there are a whole buncha really great folders that AREN'T made by Benchmade, and are a better value. Best budget folder for my money is an Ontario RAT 1.
You are right when i see gerber i think of Bear Grylls and that is not a good thing in my opinion.
Why not? Just wondering if you don't mind
The Paracord was the only decent Bear Grylls knife Gerber ever produced from China.
It's ground very thick behind the edge, and they're all wildly inconsistent. It's a huge step up from the norm, but they've still got a lot to learn.
As always a good video! I like reviews! More like this :)
Glad to have you here as a member Emil,
I have always liked gerber knifes, I had a gerber knife as a kid that I lost in my grandfathers yard and he gave it back to me a few years later.
It looks more like the Skyline than the Leek except for the blade, which is very similar to the Leek.
@@jackagain8346 With they comparison of the two Kershaws, I was intending the blade shape.
I have fallen in love with the Kershaw Leek, really thin so easy to carry and open(as long as you remove the lame safety). Very similar to your Gerber.
You would have to pry my benchmade out of my cold dead hands
Axis lock >>> liner lock every time... if you like the assisted opening, go for a benchmade barrage or mini-barrage. I have the mini-barrage and absolutely love using the thing. Sturdy, has some heft but not too much, can lock closed or double lock open, and great blade shape and steel
I'm not paying $200 for a pocket knife. I'm just here for the comments.
Thank you for the information!, I take the clips off as well, especially on my tape measures.
Wow Gerber has ripped off the Kershaw Leak!
I love my Leak! I was about to post the same thing.
I genuinely love how Cody's mindset is just like my dad's.
You might want to look at a Kershaw Leek. Much cheaper, but the S30 in the Gerber is much better steel.
Edward Nutter my edc knife is a Kershaw brawler best knives I’ve ever had
Power Wagon, Kershaw steel isn’t bad, but it doesn’t hold an edge as well as some. My edc is a Grid. But I’d like a 3.5” Leek with VG-10 or S30 steel.
I too have a Gerber A400. I bought mine new about 1990. It's never been used except cutting some paper to test sharpness! I wrapped 3/4 of the handle with camo 550 paracord. It gives it a better purchase an looks pretty cool! I think this is chrome plated! Very unusual.
Ok why is he not carrying a 943 it’s exactly what he needs??
Wondering the same thing. Or get a zt 0450 which is my favorite knife right now
Cameron Blaine my next knife I get is hopefully a 0562 cf
That's also a really sick knife, the blade shape is amazing for slicing and it's built like a tank. I just use the 0450 titanium cause it's smaller.
Sean Bates I have a lightly used one for sale.
It's too fragile of a tip for him he likes to use the 940 for screwing screws
I absolutely love my 940-1 its just a bit higher end than the 940 it cuts like a beast and is light as all . I dig the carbon fiber look. I am however a collector and hard user so my stuff has to be made well and tough to last
Do yourself a favor and check out the Kershaw Leek designed by Ken Onion, that's my favorite EDC, what a point and the opening is spectacular. Thanks!
ERIC FOLSOM like wise , I was just going to say that it’s also very affordable I have several
@@k.medeiros1983 Every year at Christmas they go on sale at Menards for 28.00, I buy a couple whether I need them or not, they make great gifts.
I recently purchased the Kershaw Blur Ken Onion edition and it craxked right through the thumb stud area. Very disappointing.
I love the bugout. Carried it for over a year every day. Not one complaint. Have a 940-2 also so i can compair to your 940. One month is still in the honeymoon phase for the gerber.
everything you described liking in both knives describes every ZT knife ever made
Thats what i was saying this whole video😂
Depends on the ZT. The Fastball is $99 and ZT's can go for more than the 940 and/or Fastball combined.
Note that he flicked open knife without it being a switch blade. All knives can be made to do so hence no need to forbid them.
thank for giving us Exclusive access to your video.
No thank you for supporting us Jeff,
I personally like frame lock folding knifes. The thin metal lock holding the blade open had always bothered me, like on the gerber. That blade is a lite duty knife only. Frame lock , way more robust.
My edc has been a Kershaw leek the past 5 or so years
I'm not a huge fan of Kershaw but those do look quite nice.
I have had a leek or 7 as my edc for the last 12-13 years now.
I have the carbon fiber + CPM-154 model & I love it.
Until the tip turns into a flat head screwdriver. In # idk how many at this point but cannot put them down
Ball bearing pivots need much more attention than bronze phosphate bushings. That Osborn is 10x the knife at 2x the price.
I hate ball bearings because the knife gets horizontal play.
I carry a 943 right now. Next is a Reeves or Hinderer. Not bad for a Gerber though!
No Gerber is worth anywhere near $100.
Got me a Gerber Hunter 450. Love it.
I don't think I'll ever buy a knife that costs $240. I lose things ALL the time and that would be a huge loss for me.
Spyderco para 2 for life hehe
It's a good knife, but the handle is very uncomfortable. It just doesn't feel right, in my opinion.
@@PerceptionVsReality333 para 3 is probably one of the most comfortable knives I've held, and the blade geometry makes it insanely sharp
@@BryceKimball7.3
I haven't held that one, but the Manix 2 & Paramilitary 2 feel too blocky. They just sit in my room collecting dust because I never carry them.
Gerber made a SF fighting knife during the Vietnam War. Some of them had a 5 degree cant on the handle. This allowed a better fit at the waist. It tucked in tighter.
Love the Rolex Explorer , was the Seiko too beefy after all ?
I bought a $100+ Gerber knife with 154cm blade steel, made in the USA, and a bendy plastic handle that you might expect on a knife with a plastic blade in the toy section. I was like, “What The!?”. One hand sticky opening that you really needed two hands for.
Hot spots for days, even though I didn’t trust it enough to put much pressure on it.
Last Gerber product I’ll buy.
I then bought a $25 Schrade that was 50 times the knife. Not as sharp out of the box, no fancy steel, but I’ll tell you what:
The handle ain’t gonna break and put my hand into the blade.
The only other Gerber I had was a compact multitool that had the backspring on the knife blade collapse.
I have never broken a knife or multitool from a reputable name before or since. Had the same Victorinox Electrician for 14 years and I gave it away fully functional after daily use.
"Did Gerber Just Destroy Benchmade ? Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaahaaaaaahaaaaaa🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
best response
Id call it "The Crow" for the black aluminum handle and the crowish beak look on the blade.
It’s called a “Wharnecliffe” blade shape. Named after Lord Wharnecliffe in England many years ago who commissioned a new design for hunting and skinning. There’s your worthless knowledge for the day. 😂
Nick Navarre thx lol 😂
(Although I’d argue some light curves in the blade don’t immediately disqualify it from being a Wharncliffe.)
The Wharncliffe is widely mixed up with the sheepsfoot blade and lesser known lambsfoot blade.
Modified Warnecliffe might be the better term. Thanks for the history!
