True story. A club in Bloomfield, NJ booked Steppenwolf and advertised the show. Except they forgot to tell John Kay and Steppenwolf. So somebody from the club calls John kay in New Orleans and, lo and behold, he says, "okay, i'll get the band together and we'll come up and play. It was a small place in the mid seventies and my sister went. She said it was outrageous and Kay and the guys were gracious and wonderful with the crowd and blew the doors off the place.

This song impressed quite a number of us in Vietnam in 1968-1969. It was heard over Radio Saigon and on the club juke boxes a million times. Never got tired of it.

Was 16. Parents gone far away...for a long weekend!
Dad left his keys by the door...
A few hours later I sat in his Le Mans. 350cc...
Had never driven a car before. I floored it till the end of the song... it was flying! Windows down... Spring had just started... second biggest rush in my life!

Although I had been watching dad for 10 years doing the shifting..... I came in too fast in the parking lot of our home... I was on two wheels for what seemed like an eternity!
;) told my dad about it 15 years later. And he did not believe me...

John Kay…an incredible early life. Born to a German soldier during the war in what is now Russia. Father killed. Mother and son refugees on an arduous journey in East and West Germany eventually to Canada. Partially blind…never spoke any English.

A great song, the first time I heard HEAVY METAL mentioned in a song or reference in music and first time I heard a guitar mimic a motor engine, I was hooked on this wild sound as a 60s and early 70s kid. That legendary howling 1 man chorus is for me still one of the most extravagant exclamations of youth power to this day 🙏🏽

Kevin Kelly not really. some of their early songs were recorded “live in the studio” meaning rehearsed until ready, then recorded in 1 take without punch-in overdubs. i had the extreme pleasure to do foh on a one nighter and it was seriously impressive how much they did play songs just like the recordings i had listened to for years, which helped me tremendously. just sayin too...

This song actually coined the phrase "Heavy Metal."

    • @yesdcotchin
      @yesdcotchin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@Chris Ward "this song... coined", i.e. the song literally used the phrase 'heavy metal' in the lyrics before anyone had referred to the music genre as such. This isn't a comment on which band was the first of the genre

    "Born To Be Wild"
    Get your motor runnin'
    Head out on the highway
    Lookin' for adventure
    And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space
    I like smoke and lightning
    Heavy metal thunder
    Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space
    Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
    We can climb so high
    I never wanna die
    Born to be wild
    Born to be wild
    Get your motor runnin'
    Head out on the highway
    Lookin' for adventure
    And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space
    Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
    We can climb so high
    I never wanna die
    Born to be wild

And the Hell's Angels came to us, I was 10 years old and I was a scared my brother always wears marine cap. They noticed we were poor they gave us some money good guys I saw Steppenwolf in 79 I believe at Fort Bragg maybe 80 and 81 thanks for the cool news wish I could have been there.
