Steppenwolf is a rock band that helped establish heavy metal music in the late 1960s along with bands like Blue Cheer and Iron Butterfly. The band was formed in 1967 in Los Angeles by vocalist John Kay, guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, keyboardist Goldy McJohn and drummer Jerry Edmonton after the dissolution of its predecessor, The Sparrows.
The band has sold more than 25 million units worldwide, releasing 8 gold albums and 13 Hot 100 singles, including three top-10 hits in "Born to Be Wild" (it is in the lyrics of this song in which the term "heavy metal" is first heard in rock music, thus, according to some, attributing the term to songwriter Mars Bonfire), '"Magic Carpet Ride", and "Rock Me". Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1974, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. Today, frontman John Kay is the only original member left, having served as lead singer for almost all of the 40 years since 1967. Kay has stated that there will be no more Steppenwolf tours, but according to band manager Charlie Wolf, he has left open the possibility of doing "a half dozen shows in '09"

One of my favorite bands live. I've seen them half a dozen times or so. I remember seeing them one night in Atlanta when another venue had pink floyd playing. It was a very intimate show and they were playing audience requests. They mentioned the obvious, core fans there that night. Nobody was enforcing seating and we were up front jumping up and down like a night club show. awesome.

Born to be wild” was the main theme of the film “Easy Rider” starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, riding their Harley Davidson, going down in history as one of the most striking moments of the sixties counterculture, and to this day inspires not only motorcyclists, but many people around the world.

On this day in 1968 {May 4th} Steppenwolf performed this song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand...
Two months later on July 13th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100..
Original bassist Rushton Moreve passed away on July 1st, 1981 at the young age of 32..
And original drummer Jerry Edmonton passed away on November 28th, 1993 at the age of 47..
R.I.P. Mr. Clark, Mr. Moreve, and Mr. Edmonton..
    *** "Heavy metal thunder" ***

WOW! Thanks so much for this.
I saw Steppenwolf for the first time when they opened for a band called "Chicago Transit Authority," at that time calling themselves "CTA," who later became just "Chicago."
Steppenwolf blew everyone else off the stage. The opening of Magic Carpet Ride still gives me chills and brings back memories of wearing suede "hot pants" and matching knee-high boots, and a fringed vest that fanned out when you're dancing. If only we'd known then that we had the world in the palm of our hands and there was nothing we couldn't do. Thanks for reminding me that we're all still "ROCK STARS" and continue to shine on.
    Still amazing.

LYRICS : "Born To Be Wild" - Steppenwolf (1968)
    Writers : MARS BONFIRE
    "Get your motor runnin'
    Head out on the highway
    Lookin' for adventure
    And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space
    I like smoke and lightning
    Heavy metal thunder
    Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space
    Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
    We can climb so high
    I never wanna die
    Born to be wild
    Born to be wild
    Get your motor runnin'
    Head out on the highway
    Lookin' for adventure
    And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space
    Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
    We can climb so high
    I never wanna die
    Born to be wild
    Born to be wild".

He's doing some solo dates here and there, blues kind of rock like he started out doing in the mid 60's.

i dont know. im pretty young. but i like to think that when you hold up to the test of time so well as long as steppenwolf has, you're nothing short of legendary.

During my mid-late teens, favourite bands were Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis Group, Ten Years After, Keef Hartley Band, Iron Butterfly AND Steppenwolf. Hardly recognize John Kay's voice now, but the man is still going strong and, the totally refurbished band sounds great. OMG the keyboardist, where has this guy been hiding?...awesome!!
