I’m still so glad I got to see them… at the time I was like who cares but looking back I feel super blessed.. they came with the strange days festival.. Yardbirds, vanilla fudge, steppenwolf, and the doors of the 21st century.. epic
I got a Harley and this song says it all; almost…. I'm a teacher too, and John Kay is also a humanitarian helping many poor kids in S.E. asia. Fame and money is not what is important in life. What a great incredible guy!
+Terryl Miller he hasnt changed much since way back voice still the same read your bit about humanitarian didnt know shows one can learn somethink every day thankyou
On top of that he survived the red army, allied bombings, east Germany and extreme poverty. :) Unfortunately he lost about 85% of his eye sight at an very early age.
Wanted john kay to walk me to school every day..stop the bullies..having the band bros there would have been the topper..would not turn the group away…even today…❤️🇨🇦
One of my favorite bands live. I've seen them half a dozen times or so. I remember seeing them one night in Atlanta when another venue had pink floyd playing. It was a very intimate show and they were playing audience requests. They mentioned the obvious, core fans there that night. Nobody was enforcing seating and we were up front jumping up and down like a night club show. awesome.
couldnt agree more. man he looks so cool in there, he's around 60 or something, he's on stage in front of small, middle-aged audiance, and he still demonstrates the biggest and unique Rock spirit and coolness ever.
Born to be wild” was the main theme of the film “Easy Rider” starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, riding their Harley Davidson, going down in history as one of the most striking moments of the sixties counterculture, and to this day inspires not only motorcyclists, but many people around the world.
WOW! Thanks so much for this. I saw Steppenwolf for the first time when they opened for a band called "Chicago Transit Authority," at that time calling themselves "CTA," who later became just "Chicago." Steppenwolf blew everyone else off the stage. The opening of Magic Carpet Ride still gives me chills and brings back memories of wearing suede "hot pants" and matching knee-high boots, and a fringed vest that fanned out when you're dancing. If only we'd known then that we had the world in the palm of our hands and there was nothing we couldn't do. Thanks for reminding me that we're all still "ROCK STARS" and continue to shine on. Still amazing.
I think this is the first time I've seen John Kay perform without glasses! As i commented on the Magic Carpet Ride Video, this 67 year old falls somewhere in the badass category.
The absolutley most perfect live rock'n'roll performance! I give it a 10........X 10!!! one of the best songs to hear while driving No song catches the American spirit quite like this song
John Kay plays a mean guitar solo here. Way cool in every way! A great great performance by one of the most iconic rock acts of all time performing the most iconic biker rock song of all time!
Jon Kay and the band brings it real again. This song does have more genuine meaning and heart than many may ever discover. First time I heard this version and it ROCKS.

On this day in 1968 {May 4th} Steppenwolf performed this song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand... niall gormley Yep, unfortunately you have to grow up with all the rap bullshit polluting the airwaves. I'm so sorry for your generation. You have no idea what you missed because it'll never be repeated.
I met John Kay once about 1989 shook his hand and he wouldn't let go lol. But I had to go somewhere so I moved on. He was in excellent physical condition, as he appears in this video. And it's like 20 years later when this was recorded I believe!!
I just saw one of there shows...a couple days ago... they had a live bass player... he switched between a 4 string bass and a 5 stringed one.... Steppenwolf is amazing!!!!
During my mid-late teens, favourite bands were Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis Group, Ten Years After, Keef Hartley Band, Iron Butterfly AND Steppenwolf. Hardly recognize John Kay's voice now, but the man is still going strong and, the totally refurbished band sounds great. OMG the keyboardist, where has this guy been hiding?...awesome!!
62 years old here...rockin' for a dang long time...thank god... Oh man I would love to jam with these old school rockers like steppenwolf or Led Zeppelin...
Moderne Methode….).
Holy crap - they still look good 45 years later. One of the best in the 60s.
Miles Harris Even though John Kay is the only original member and the others are probably a generation younger.
Are you kidding? He's really showing his age, and well past his singing prime.
take a look at him rn at 80 in 2024 , guy is ageless
I’m still so glad I got to see them… at the time I was like who cares but looking back I feel super blessed.. they came with the strange days festival..
Yardbirds, vanilla fudge, steppenwolf, and the doors of the 21st century.. epic

Unfortunately he lost about 85% of his eye sight at an very early age.

"Heavy metal thunder", John Kay coined that term
"Mars Bonfire" actually wrote the song....his brother was the original drummer in the group. ^/^
It doesn't matter, who was the first to sing this song? So, he was the messenger...got it?
Bour to be ai like
Steve Woan j
He was referring to a motorcycle. So it was a complete accident that it came to mean his entire genre of music.

"Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild".

Amazing how so many groups used the organ in rock music in the 60's , really like the sound.
he still got that voice. and hits the high notes just pretty well. The Heavy Metal Thunder!
yes!
Check out the 69 live version from the Beat Club.
Always great.
I have always "loved" Steppenwolf. Everybody can play it and it is listenable. The band is still great.
First concert back in 1974..front row in Pershing Auditorium...Lincoln, NE
Awesome voice still.. Much richer! I loved my youth!
Good guitar player as well...
You got so lucky to be born back then ;)
I met John Kay once about 1989 shook his hand and he wouldn't let go lol. But I had to go somewhere so I moved on. He was in excellent physical condition, as he appears in this video. And it's like 20 years later when this was recorded I believe!!
He doesn't sing it as awesome and badass as back in the day, but I still have great respect for them.
One of, if not the best song to come out of my childhood!!! Still resonates loud and clear today!!

Saw these guys in Colorado. They rocked. Front row, center. Favorite concert ever!
No song catches the American spirit quite like this song
but the singer is German....
About as German as you are intelligent.
No, a Canadian, born in Germany, and now living in California.
Herman Thegerman I just saw John Kay and Steppenwolf at CNE at August 26 i think. It was Awesome!!
It doesn’t talk about killing people in poor countries and acting like the world’s police
I just saw one of there shows...a couple days ago... they had a live bass player... he switched between a 4 string bass and a 5 stringed one.... Steppenwolf is amazing!!!!
Whoa! John Kay is hotter here than when in his 20's..by far! Love these guys. Most awesome band! 🙂🙂☮☮✌✌💕💕
One of the best and recognizable rock'n'roll songs
rock n roll racing have this music gem too in 8 bits
During my mid-late teens, favourite bands were Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis Group, Ten Years After, Keef Hartley Band, Iron Butterfly AND Steppenwolf. Hardly recognize John Kay's voice now, but the man is still going strong and, the totally refurbished band sounds great. OMG the keyboardist, where has this guy been hiding?...awesome!!
Sings it even better than back in the 60s!
WOW! Its not often when a live version of a song sounds better than the studio version but I like this much better and Kay sounds better with age!
Dear America, you're welcome for Steppenwolf.
Love Canada.
Gran grupo de los 60
Songs like this I think will never die!!!
My salute to classic rock & roll music. I think they were given from heaven!!! :-)

I hate he's not touring anymore. I would love to see him again. ❣️
He's doing some solo dates here and there, blues kind of rock like he started out doing in the mid 60's.
He is 80 now and deserves retirement.
Wow, this guy still has it. His voice progressed in a very interesting way through the years.
Baddest ass rocker of all time. Back during the flower children era, Steppenwolf was an in your face, f-you, biker band. Coolest band ever.
