These are classic symptoms of a bad glow plug relay. Also check to see if there are any visible fuel leaks, because they will cause air to get into the lines and it will take a lot of cranking to bleed the air out of the lines when it sits. If it starts right up with starting fluid then it is definitely the glow plug relay.
These motors have a fuel advance built into the injector pump they are controlled by the glow plug controller they have 2 wires running to the injection pump standing in front of the truck the front wire is the fuel shut off and the rear wire is the fuel timing advance check to see if you have power to the glow plugs and fuel timing. The advanced timing is key to an easy start. I have used a jumper wire and jumped between the two injector pump terminals to help start them, remove the wire once the motor starts.
