One of the most useful tips I was ever given and now pass on myself for 1 to 1 lessons is to not be afraid of quiet time. It is exhausting for both the teacher and the student to talk for the whole hour or however long the lesson is. Having the student do things quietly from time to time is a welcome break from both parties. Of course they probably expect a high level of speaking, but that doesn't mean it has to be constant, and quiet, contemplative tasks may lead to them producing more when it is time for them to speak.
Exactly. I had been very worried when l first started teaching 1:1 so l tried to fill up the session with unnecessary talking. I you can imagine how tense it was.
The point is that during your two hour online lesson you want a variety of tasks still so that it's not just a two hour conversation which can be exhausting for you and the student. So you may still have moments in the lesson where the student does something quietly on their own before discussing it.
@@AlexWallsELT OK, it was a bit of a throw away comment. I prepare tailor-made lessons for students, each about 1/2 hour or so. As I find areas of useful words I introduce words and phrase that will help that student. Since my students are junior high in Taiwan, it is very valuable to get them used to swapping back and forth between English and Mandarin. I have know Mandarin for many years, and my students appreciate that I can clarify things fast or they can. Also I guess my students are older than yours. Mine are Junior High, so 15-16 years old.
Even though I took all the notes I needed when I first watched this video, I've been rewatching it from time to time, because the tips are just soooo good and I always have insights for specific classes. This has been my "bedside video" for a while now. I can't thank you enough!
I have been teaching in one on one lessons (mostly on Zoom) for half a year, learning from your videos help a lot! Thank you for your videos. Would love to see more one on one teaching videos! I'm really having trouble teaching silent young children, and also those that are way too active lol Need something to capture their attention.
