Great video and beautiful demonstrations. Thank you. A small suggestion: is to show the images of when the tensions are being adjusted for the people who are not well versed on sergers and may need to actually see the dials the video is referring to. Thank you again for sharing.
Seriously one of the best serger videos I’ve seen. Especially appreciate you mentioning your tension and stitch length/differential feed settings. 🙌 I am professionally trained and still found this video extremely valuable!
Wonderful, thank you! I used wash out interfacing and on the finest see through fabric I have ever seen it has worked! For those new to overlockers I suggest spending one day threading and unthreading your machine, over and over and over......it does work to take away all fears of thread breaking, or changing colours. The man who sold me my Bernina 1300MDC suggested it and now I LOVE my machine and as an alterations seamstress it is essential. Enjoy!
Great video, some awesome tips that I didn't know. Just shortened a formal dress, was so much easier with your stabilizing method. I used the plastic wrap since it's a black dress, however I did find that the plastic wrap would cling to the underside of the foot and the fabric would bunch up while the plastic stayed put. I overcame this by using an anti-static powder thingy I have that reduces static on cardstock when I'm heat embossing. Worked like a charm!
Thank you for this great tutorial and thank you, most of all, for talking about the importance of good thread. I though I could "cheat" and use regular (not made for overlocking) cheaper thread. My rolled hems looked awful! So, an hour of changing the tensions and sewing them again and again -rethreading and oiling the machine I came across your video.Boom! I heard you talk about the thread, (no idea why I didn´t think about it before) I got some good quality thread, and now my rolled hems look perfect. Thank you - sometimes it´s just the little things we overlook :)
Good video w/friendly explanations that encompass most machines without pushing what she is using. Love the various suggestions [plastic wrap - who knew!!] Now I can finally do something with these lovely chiffon-type fabrics I have. Here's an FYI folks - you need to use your serger on a REGULAR basis so all the parts stay lubricated!! - a $112 lesson. Broken wrist should not be an excuse :)
You have solved a big problem for me . Thank you for sharing this info . I never thought of using a stabilizer and this is going to make a huge difference ....❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks. I used my old serger for yrs just serging seam allowances on garment makes. My new serger I use for everything. Last yr I tried napkins w rolled hems. Just followed the manual and they came out great. Your vid helped so much bc if I try doing this on other fabric, I need to know that there are differences and how to set up for them. 😊
Thank You for the tutorial. Your teaching is great. I appreciate the priority of teaching over advertising. I have ordered parts because of the tutorials . Thank you. I was looking for a rolled hem foot for my old Singer. Your tutorial helped a great deal. I am making bags from cloth ie sails and billboards found after hurricane Irma. Last bag has serged edges and looks so much better than no serged edges.
Great tutorial.....I've learned so much from just two of your videos so far an I've been sewing for quite some time.......Thank you so much....your a wonderful teacher....
Hi mam... Heartily thanks to you for your tutorial series about foot presser , Its like a Milestone which can uplift from junior to expert level . Or from bachelor degree to Masters levels..🎓
Hi! I didn't have to use a rolled hem plate because the stitch finger on this serger is independently adjustable. I can just switch it off for a rolled hem.
Not yet. Typically, T-shirts have a cover stitch hem, which is different from what a typical serger can do. If you google Cover Stitch Tutorial, you should be able to find tons of great demonstrations. Good Luck!
I feel kind of silly for not having read the comments. Besides your oh-so-helpful videos, there is also a plethora of knowledge to be gained from reading the messages. You have been my companion for so many spots I manage to get into. I haven't sewn much for the last 30+ years and you have been here right beside me as I learn all over again. I can't thank you enough. Sincerely, Cheryl M.
Hi, I am new with serger and still learning. In your video, the setting of roll hem with left needle is 3, lower and upper loop is 8 (nylon thread) and 9 (polyester). So I don't know what is this setting? I want to do the roll hem for the scarves . Your video is very helpful. Thank you
Oh gurl,am I glad I ran into you. I suck at this. I've had my serger over 5 yrs., and I'm still afraid of it. When doing a rolled hem, do I set the stitch finger on "R", or leave it on "S"? By the way, I appreciate your teaching method. You explain so well, and clear. Thanks for simplifying this dark machine.
I'm so glad you cleared this up for me, and thanks for your response, because I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Okay, I guess I'll go play with it when I get the time:)
I am in neeeeeed of a tutorial settings for serging (I have the Singer Finishing Touch) a hem on lace and especially for the bottom. I'm trying to hem a lace peplum top to go over a dress and sewing isn't as sturdy (imo). I can't find a tutorial or even just a google search of the settings. Please help! Thank you and I love your videos they have been so very helpful.
thanks I just did a rolled hem on a poly table cloth. I think I need to redo it with a stabilizer, it looks like it wants to pull out in a couple area's :(.
I really enjoyed your lesson because I am sewing my wife a sheer high low blouse and I wanted it to look store bought as much as possible. now I am armed with the knowledge to do this thing. Is using the clear (fishing line type) thread ok to use when sewing? I dislike changing the colors all the time.
Tim R Hi Tim! Changing out the thread is definitely a pain, but I wouldn't use clear thread on a sheer blouse, because the thread is kind of harsh for such delicate fabric. A silk thread is nice for light fabric, but you can use polyester.
I am using a singer serger and I am doing the 4 thread stitch and I have been using my scrap piece of satin for almost two hours and it wont come out right. I am using diff feed of 1, blue 7, green 7, red 1, and yellow 1. I just need your help please .
Our pleasure! :) You do not have to use wooly nylon; however, it helps fill in the rolled hem nicely. If you don't have any wooly nylon handy, to have a nice- tidy rolled hem, try using a smaller stitch length. Thanks for watching!
thanks for DAT video i followed my server book n put d knife in d non working position after i put back d knife in d working position it not cutting d fabric any help please.
Charde Moore Yup! A rolled hem is great for stretchy fabric - especially with wooly nylon thread, as it fills in the gaps when the fabric is stretched.
My serger blade ...i can not get it to return to up so as to cut. I have a Janome 644d myLock . any suggestions on how to get it to lift up. it pushes in as it is to do before you turn it up. but maybe there is some step i don t know to do. thanks..
Rehema Afful-Nyannor Hi! I took a look at your manual. First, you want to turn off your serger and remove the power cord. Then, you need to open the looper cover and the right side cover. Then, locate the upper knife release knob. Pull the knob out and (while still pulling on the knob) turn it towards the back of the machine. You should see the knife move to the up position as you turn the knob. Once the knife is in the full, upright position, release the knob and turn the hand wheel to make sure the blade is activated.
Hi, I was just wondering if you have any tutorials on how to change the serger settings? For example how to only use the right needle? Sorry if this a pretty stupid question
Thanks for the beautiful video have on domestic Seger that can do rolled hem.for years , pls I have a brother serger so just want to know if my machine too can do this rolled hem and how to go about the settings . Thanks very much and God bless
Hello first time serger over here...lol well trying to learn to thread the thing. My husband always surprised me with machines and the last one he gave me was a Singer 5 professional serger I say last because he passed away January, 2013. It is still unused I want to keep it . Please if anyone can instructed me on how to thread it I would greatly appreciate it.
WANDA CAMPBELL Hi! Unfortunately, there really isn't that much information out on the web about serging with 5 thread overlocks. However, I found this book online that has a ton of great reviews and I think it's a good place to start. www.barnesandnoble.com/w/complete-serger-handbook-chris-james/1102499868?r=1&ean=9780806998077&kpid=9780806998077&cm_mmc=GooglePLA-_-Book_Under5-_-Q000000633-_-9780806998077 I found books to be the most helpful medium when learning to serge. Good luck!
Hi Sara :-) This video and all your videos are sooooo good. I have a teensy weensy favor to ask of you... Would you please include the Stitch Width that you are using in the video---as your outcome will give us an idea of which way to go with the width ( Your example would help us to gauge what width is needed for our project)...hope this makes sense...Would you please do that for us? :-) (Include the Stitch Width you used in the demo I mean ) Many Blessings, E.
badgebunny87 Babylock and Janomes are nice, but you really have to go for a mid-level machine - around the $500+ mark to get one that is relatively "quiet". Happy shopping!
I generally use the same settings on chiffon because I always stabilize it - which makes it just a tad bit heavier. Settings differ slightly between machines, but the ones listed are a great starting point. Test on a scrap and if you don't like the outcome, play around with the upper and lower looper knobs and observe what happens. What machine do you have?
I am sorry, but you are not able to covert that machine into a serger. I would suggest contacting Janome directly for more information. I am sorry I could not be of further assistance.
Rama Vasudevan The recommended needle size depends on the fabric weight (just like on a regular sewing machine). However, if your serger is more than 13 years old refer to your manual -- some sergers won't use home sewing machine needles and you may have to use a special needle. I did use the right needle -- I did not use the left. You do not use the left needle to create this hem. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
I spent hours reading the manual. Rethreading the machine. I finally took the Singer ProFinish to a local sewing machine shop that doesn't sell Singers. The technician spent an hour getting it to do the rolled hem. I surged about 6 pieces of fabric and then it started skipping stitches. Once again 6 months later, I'm attempting to use this machine again. I have put in a new needle. I have rethreaded the machine. I'm using cotton/polyester fabric to make napkins for centerpieces. It will make a beautiful stitch for 10-12 inches and then skip stitches and then make beautiful stitches for a another 6-10 or 12 inches and then skip stitches. This is only the second time doing a project on this machine and it is extremely frustrating. Help!
After watching hours of videos yesterday, I found Singer 14SH654 Overlocker Basics and Threading tutorial by Jamie Kemp. He hit what I needed... my thread was between the metal plate and plastic in the tension area, so any amount of changing to tension was not working. I changed needles, rethreaded and tried the 2 thread rolled hem instead of the 3 thread and was able to get a beautiful hem! Finally! I am using the thread I got at JoAnne's SureLock Polyester. I will be looking for Wooly Nylon thread. JoAnne's does not carry this. None of the other videos have shown the back of my machine and the detail of putting the thread exactly through the metal tension plates. So important for a beginner like me with this machine. I also have cleaned and oiled my machine. After 30 years of sewing on a regular machine this has been a very stressful experience. So thankful to get a good rolled hem now.
I'm so glad you were able to get it working! Yes, sergers are notoriously frustrating. If you're still looking for Wooly Nylon Thread, we sell the Maxilock version (Textured Nylon) here: www.sewingpartsonline.com/sewing-and-serger-thread.aspx#filter:fabricmaterial:Nylon/filter:genuine:Maxi-Lock/sort:ga_unique_purchases:desc
Hi! Wooly Nylon is great for rolled hems because it really fill in the empty spaces. If you aren't looking for a full, thick look - wooly is a great choice. Remember to buy good quality - poor quality wooly will fray and snag. Good luck!
Great video and beautiful demonstrations. Thank you. A small suggestion: is to show the images of when the tensions are being adjusted for the people who are not well versed on sergers and may need to actually see the dials the video is referring to. Thank you again for sharing.

Very helpful video! Thank you sooooo much! A dress up tutu is in my daughter's future!!
Great video! Thanks for the different methods, using a stabilizers to help make the perfect rolled hem with settings on the serger. Very helpful! :).

HAHA "this dark machine" - that's the first time I've heard it described like that. Love it! Anywho - for a rolled hem, switch to "R"
I'm so glad you cleared this up for me, and thanks for your response, because I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Okay, I guess I'll go play with it when I get the time:)

Thanks for your amazing tutorials on the Singer Serger. You have taught me how to serge!!! Do you have a tutorial on changing the needle position?
Thanks for this video. A ton of helpful hints. I love the rolled hem on projects but always had the problem of it tearing away from the fabric.
Great video for a (formerly) challenging task! Thanks

Thanks so much 😍😍 it's so helpful to me thanks again😍😍

OMG video is a life send!! Thank you!! 👏😊😄
Thank you for such a good video. Very helpful.
Can you please demonstrate rolled hem on stretch polyester?
REALLY HELPFUL, THANKS
You are now my BEST FRIEND!
Thank you, this info helped immensely.
So brilliant! Those are great ideas.
Thank you for your help.
Does this machine have presser foot pressure adjustment? I lighter adjustment may offer a better result.
I really enjoyed your lesson because I am sewing my wife a sheer high low blouse and I wanted it to look store bought as much as possible. now I am armed with the knowledge to do this thing. Hi Tashi! I'm so sorry you are having trouble. Are you trying to do a 4 thread overlock or a rolled hem?
4 thread overclock
Hi! Assuming you are using all polyester thread, try 5-5-5-5
How to you going around the corners and still have a nice hem?
Hello, wonderful tutorial! Thank you :). Do you have to use the woolly
nylon thread for a rolled hem?

Hi!! thanks for all your tips, I was wondering why my serger is sewing fine and at a point it will picker a bit why is it not consistent. thanks!
thanks for DAT video i followed my server book n put d knife in d non working position after i put back d knife in d working position it not cutting d fabric any help please.
Thanks for the tutorial! Do you know if this would work on stretchy fabrics? What I'm really having trouble with is song stretchy fabrics.
Charde Moore Yup! A rolled hem is great for stretchy fabric - especially with wooly nylon thread, as it fills in the gaps when the fabric is stretched.
Hi Nadeen! Just the Upper and Lower looper are fine. What are you making??
Genial. Mil gracias. Saludos desde Madrid. 🙋👏👏👏👍
Is the presser feet of a regular sewing machine like Singer Heavy duty 4411 the same of the Singer Pro finish Serger ?
The Pro finish Serger appears to gave different feet. I would recommend contacting our Customer Service Team at 888-824-1192
My serger blade ...i can not get it to return to up so as to cut.

What is the best way to finish the rolled hem on a scarf?
Wash away on the top and bottom should work wonderfully. Would you mind letting us know which method worked well for you? We'd love to know!
Thanks for the great lesson. If I am doing napkins or a scarf, I can curve around the corners, but what is the best way to end?
can you do a merrow hem on a serger?
I know all sergers are loud but I'm looking for a relatively quiet serger... any suggestions?
badgebunny87 Babylock and Janomes are nice, but you really have to go for a mid-level machine - around the $500+ mark to get one that is relatively "quiet". Happy shopping!
Can you do this on microfiber
I generally use the same settings on chiffon because I always stabilize it - which makes it just a tad bit heavier. Settings differ slightly between machines, but the ones listed are a great starting point. Test on a scrap and if you don't like the outcome, play around with the upper and lower looper knobs and observe what happens. What machine do you have?
Can we fit a serger in the Usha Janome ALLURE mechine?
Please give me a reply
I am sorry, but you are not able to covert that machine into a serger. I would suggest contacting Janome directly for more information. I am sorry I could not be of further assistance.
What size needles are recommended for rolled hem ? I see that you didn't use right needle, is that how the rolled hem stitch is obtained ?
Rama Vasudevan The recommended needle size depends on the fabric weight (just like on a regular sewing machine). However, if your serger is more than 13 years old refer to your manual -- some sergers won't use home sewing machine needles and you may have to use a special needle. I did use the right needle -- I did not use the left. You do not use the left needle to create this hem. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Do you need a stabiliser for silk crepe de chine? Thanks
You shouldn't need to use a stabilizer, but I would test on a scrap piece of fabric first.
Thank you

Hi! What needle and thread are you using? And are there any scratches or burrs on the needle plate?
After watching hours of videos yesterday, I found Singer 14SH654 Overlocker Basics and Threading tutorial by Jamie Kemp. He hit what I needed... my thread was between the metal plate and plastic in the tension area, so any amount of changing to tension was not working. I changed needles, rethreaded and tried the 2 thread rolled hem instead of the 3 thread and was able to get a beautiful hem! Finally! I am using the thread I got at JoAnne's SureLock Polyester. I'm so glad you were able to get it working! Yes, sergers are notoriously frustrating. If you're still looking for Wooly Nylon Thread, we sell the Maxilock version (Textured Nylon) here: www.sewingpartsonline.com/sewing-and-serger-thread.aspx#filter:fabricmaterial:Nylon/filter:genuine:Maxi-Lock/sort:ga_unique_purchases:desc
also how to set up overlocker fore rolled hem would be soooo helpful
Is woolery thread better to use on rolled hems? I think that is the name of it, I am trying to make pocket hankys so I want it to be full
Hi! Wooly Nylon is great for rolled hems because it really fill in the empty spaces. If you aren't looking for a full, thick look - wooly is a great choice. Remember to buy good quality - poor quality wooly will fray and snag. Good luck!
ok thanks a lot!
