    Great video. I thought I'd let you know that I managed to used your technique on quite a heavy velvet Lycra fabric. To counteract the weight, I used a reel of gardening strimmer wire. It worked a treat, just don't wind it on too narrow a tube. I found a kitchen roll tube was about right. Was making a ballroom dance dress for my daughter.

    Well dang!!! I ended up here somehow...I was looking for how to sew mitered corners!!! It must have been karma. I have several LONG skirts that I love, that I was procrastinating hemming shorter. Since I moved away from my favourite fishing river several years ago, I also have a tackle box with allll kinds of (now) useless fishing line! Good thing I never throw anything out :) My little universe converged right here! Thanks! I would never have thought of this... !!

    Excited! I thought that I had imagined this. When I was a child, a million years ago, my Mom gave me the most beautiful night gown. My most favorite ever. @alohachristine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jacquiline.... A serger. I hadn't thought of that...but I have one! :) Thanks for the idea! That does sound faster than trying to get it to curl into the rolled hem foot on the machine. But on the serger you don't use the rolled hem foot?

      @jagilo9677 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      alohachristine ... I hemmed (lettuce hem ruffles) 58 dresses for our show choir a year ago and saw this video. I realized Pincushion's method would take too long. My Brother Serger comes with the foot needed for lettuce hem. Check your machine's manual. Good luck!

    Does the fishing line go through the washer and dryer ok? Does horse hair braid was and dry well?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Leslie Elmore You can get it wet no problem but the heat is what sets the curl. If you throw it in the dryer, you'll more than likely lose the curly hem. horsehair braid is normally washable and dry cleanable. I'd probably still line dry instead of throwing it in the dryer.

      @stalstonestacy4316 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      This method has been used for ages to revitalize a crinoline petticoat that had lost its loft. Being a square dancer i have several that have this treatment. Machine wasing on the gentle cycle in cold water and laying flat to dry in room air will not pull the coils flat. Also, i highly recommend using the cheapest line you can get as it tends to have more spring to it. Quality fishing line is meant to be invisible in water and move with the slightest current; this makes it unsuitable for these types of projects. I suggest buying Wal-Mart or similar in 20-60lb test depending on your desired finished results

    • @LiliAquinas
      @LiliAquinas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stalstonestacy4316, thank you for the tip to buy the cheaper stuff! I hadn't considered that the higher quality line would be less springy.

  • @ruthcline5465
    @ruthcline5465 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s sooo much easier to leave a wider fabric before sewing.
    To trim close to the sew line after sewing, you’ll need to cut the hem longer by an inch or two.
    Much easier.

    Can this method be used with a stretchy fabric like lycra? What would be your suggestion in regards to the presser foot and needle in that case? Thank you!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried it and you might try it on a scrap. I think the biggest issue is the weight of the fabric. Granted, lycra isn't a heavy weight fabric but it's usually heavier than organza and the weight might prevent the fishing line from curling.
