    Watching that scene with Ned accepting the baby from Lyanna is so deep. They’d fought this war and slaughtered thousands, and he finally gets to his sister and realised the entire thing was based on a lie. The men there were _protecting_ Lyanna. She was never a hostage. I can’t imagine the kind of guilt he’d been carrying for all those years. And the pain he must’ve felt every time he looked at Jon.

    • @gilbertallard306
      @gilbertallard306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Ohh f@ck you just made me realize something! The guilt he was carrying for killing the guards, especially with one his men pulling the final blow from the back is the reason he despised the King Slayer. I’m remembering that scene in the Throne room where Jamie is asking Ned : “Would it have made a difference to you if I had stabbed him in the belly?”

    • @AdriaNicoo
      @AdriaNicoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I wouldn’t necessarily call it a lie though. They weren’t “lying” when they assumed Rhaegar had abducted her, they just didn’t know otherwise. Plus, if we try to imagine how things would have unfolded if they did know, I’m not entirely sure the war doesn’t happen anyways.
      The war began not after the “abduction” but after Brandon and Rickard were murdered by the Mad King for going to Kings Landing and demanding she be brought back. It is very possible that even knowing Lyanna went willingly Brandon would’ve gone south and demanded the same being that Prince Rhaegar was already married with children and Lyanna already betrothed to Robert. It would’ve been seen as outrageous and as a source of shame and dishonor for houses Stark and Baratheon.

    • @hali_55
      @hali_55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AdriaNicoo maybe “lie” isn’t the right word. Misunderstanding maybe?
      I’m not sure. If the Starks knew that Lyanna loved Rhaegar and vice versa, it’s possible that they would’ve been allowed to marry. After all, he was the crown prince & the Starks and Targaryens didn’t have any issues until then. It definitely would’ve caused a rift between the baratheons and Starks though. But even if they hadn’t been permitted to marry, knowing that Lyanna willing ran away with Rhaegar would’ve made things completely different.
      The whole reason Brandon & Rickard were angry is because they thought Rhaegar had abducted Lyanna. Aerys killed them both for their disrespect (and because he was crazy). So the inciting incident is still Lyanna’s alleged abduction at the hands of Rhaegar.

    • @AdriaNicoo
      @AdriaNicoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hali_55 I don’t see them just accepting that so easily but there’s no way to know really so your guess as to what could’ve happened is just as valid. Either way, if that lack of communication was the culprit then I think we can lay the blame on Rhaegar and Lyanna for not letting anyone know. I think Ned has a great sense of regret but he’d be very hard on himself if he felt guilty, they made the decisions they made with the information they had. (Not saying he doesn’t feel guilty, just that he shouldn’t).

    • @hali_55
      @hali_55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AdriaNicoo yeah, I agree with you. Lyanna and Rhaegar carry most of the blame. Ned seems like the type to carry guilt that he really shouldn’t. It appeared like he even had some guilt over the way Arthur Dayne died even though he wasn’t the one who stabbed him in the back. I guess that’s just him.

    Tommen had the most subversive death ever. The whole show is about all these families commiting all types of murder and violence to get to the Iron Throne and the man who's sitting on it couldn't wait to give up. Crushed by the pressure. Brilliant! Reminds me of the old saying "heavy is the head that wears the crown".

    *PROMISE ME NED*
    In the 1st book there's a very somber sequence where Robert in his deathbed is pleading with Ned to take care of Joffrey. Before he dies last thing Robert says is " PROMISE ME NED ". But Ned hears that sentence in a female voice. It's so well written, it's hard to do justice. That was my first vague inkling. All through the 1st book Ned has a crisis of faith looking at Robert deteriorating on the throne, and asks himself if Robert really was a better alternative to the Targaryen Crown Prince. It kills Ned cause he starts to second guess everything he had fought for. In the process of winning the war he lost the Brother he knew. There's times when Ned is walking through the castles and wherever he goes he comes across these relics left by the Targaryens, which reminds him of Prince Rhaeger. The greatest dynasty is gone, but their imprint is still everywhere. Even as absolute masters of King's Landing, it's Ned and Robert who felt like outsiders there. It's all beautifully written and Ned's constant inner torment is impossible to do justice on screen. But that's when you start to wonder why is Ned feeling so guilty all the time? Maybe everything is not what it seems? It's that "chaos, a gaping pit" line from Varys. The victors kept telling lies about the vanquished so many times, they themselves forgot what the truth was. People say ASOIAF is the tragic love story of Rhaegar and Lyanna. But it's really A Tragic Love Story of Eddard and Robert. Back in the day ASOIAF forum had a funny thread where they listed every suggestive moment between Ned and Robert, including just the sheer number of times Ned thinks of Young Robert as "muscled like a maiden's fancy". Dude slick left his wife home to be with King Bob 😅

      Thank you for jogging my memory on this! For Ned to see his sister AFTER the war had been won, and that it was all based on a lie, I can’t imagine. And for what? That had to be what he was thinking. All the loss of life. And Robert. Why? Tragic

    I still can't get that melancholic piano music out of my head. The camera panning out to Cersei's coronation is my favorite shot, waited the whole series for that moment. The King in the North chant lives, once more after all this time! With Jon and Sansa at the table as throwback to Robb and Cat from the end of S1. Very evocative score and visuals. This is my favorite GoT episode. Through hell and highwater we keep hoping for all these outcomes, and at last the floodgates open up! Remember how we all do the "Winter is Coming drinking game" gag in early seasons as the Starks keep saying it every 5 mins? Bet you didn't think next time you'll hear a Stark saying it again in the show, it'll be under these circumstances. Or as Sansa quotes Ned in winter is here, "when the Snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." There's that badass teaser for S7 called Long Walk which shows the two queens and the one king walking to their respective thrones and subconsciously you just know that this is it, they've peaked, it's down from here. Oh well, at least for a second it did feel like a time for wolves!

    Tywin was shot by a crossbow bolt, just like Robb & Catelyn were. Roose Bolton was stabbed in the heart, same as he did to Robb. And Walder Frey had his throat cut the same way Catelyn was killed. AND the two sons Arya baked into the pies were the ones who stabbed Talisa (Lothar) and the one who personally cut her mother's throat (Black Walder). Tywin, Roose & Walder forced Catelyn to watch her own son die, and all met their ends because of their own children. Just perfect.

    I had the same reaction when the episode was over. Even when I watch it now I'm still in awe of just how many shocking turn of events they pack in a single episode. Every one of them hit like a brick wall. In one stroke it manages to resolve two seasons worth of arcs, and leaves you with one you never thought about. This is like a multiple watch episode cause the first time you're just in a shell shocked state. It keeps on giving until there's nothing more left! At the beginning of last episode Tyrion foreshadows by telling Dany the story of Mad King hiding caches of wildfire in King's Landing. By the end of Bastards that's the last thing in your mind! Hats off to Ramin Djawadi's music. The music alone is better than pretty much every finale I've ever seen. The way it adds to the suspense of the Sept scene is unreal. Who else is unreal? Liam Cunningham as Davos berating Mellisandre. Battle episodes are always crazy,but this is fantastic in a different kinda way! It deserved every accolade it got.

    Sometimes, succession to the throne isn't by way of inheritance.
    Aegon the Conquerer took the kingship (and created the Iron Throne) by force.
    Robert deposed the Targaryen king Aerys II and took the throne by force.
    Cersei essentially did the same thing. Disposed of all her opponents and enemies by force and claimed the throne.

    Never a time that I don’t cry watching Jon become king. Especially after seeing how much he was loved. We knew Rhaegar had his knights there protecting something of utmost importance, and valuable to him, because the knights could have saved Rhaegar from death had they been with him. Lyanna, his mother, who is laying there in white. Beautiful, and lost her life in childbirth. And the love of what Ned did for her, to keep his promise. Lied to his wife for years. Took the abuse as a cheater, when all the while he was protecting his nephew from a realm that would want any Targaryen dead. Sad. Beautiful but sad. Jon’s life would be so different if his parents lived. And becoming king short of makes me feel that it is finally honoring his place.

    "We know no King but the King in the North, who's name is Stark". An awesome insane ep. It's in my top three. The moral is "power recides where men believe it recides" - Varys. The whole edifice of the ruling power that was held together by so much bloodshed comes crashing down like a deck of cards. To watch it all go up in flames (literally) was as rewarding as watching it slowly being built up was irksome. Out of the wreckages of the North, the South and the East emerge the three contenders to the Iron Throne : the Bastard of Winterfell, the Lioness of Casterly Rock, and the Stormborn who intends to re-create what her ancestor Aegon the Conqueror had done three centuries ago.

      *some real time reviews from publications* :
      "Game of Thrones recap: season six finale - The Winds of Winter". Talk about saving the best until last: it was a heart-stopping and spine-tingling conclusion heavy in blood, revenge and death. Winds of Winter aka Game of Thrones: The Ultimate Vengeance Edition was a heart-stopping conclusion heavy in blood, revenge and death in which scores were settled, new alliances formed, old fan theories confirmed and the stage set for what promises to be the mother of all clashes between Dany, the Queen of Dragons, and Cersei, the queen of ashes and dust. - *The Guardian*
      "Sunday night's episode of Game of Thrones exceeded every single one of my expectations. Revenge, revelation, and the most brutal winnowing of the show's cast since the Red Wedding, all collided into one of the best episodes yet of HBO's fantasy drama. I don't even know where to begin. The sheer quantity of incredible moments in The Winds of Winter have left me reeling. For a show that boasts some of the best music on television, somehow Game of Thrones managed to up the ante even more in the Season 6 finale. Right from the first scene, and right up until the last, just about every bit was simply gorgeous. An almost mournful piano greets us in the High Sept. Later, during Cersei's coronation, the urgent rise and fall of strings, dark and moody. The episode deserves awards based on its music alone.

      "Game of Thrones : 'The Winds of Winter' Season 6 Finale Review"
      After many false starts and narrative detours, there was a tremendous sense of momentum to “The Winds of Winter,” a feeling of ends being tied up and of story threads dovetailing in extremely satisfying fashion, with plenty of murder and darkness mixed in, of course. I loved every moment of it. - *The Atlantic*
      "There’s a lot to discuss when talking about Game Of Thrones. Brilliant performances, incredible special effects, impressive writing, action, suspense, drama, comedy… there’s so much to take in that it’s very easy to forget about something when discussing episodes. It's the music." - *Den of Geeks*
      "A Breakdown of Why the Directing in Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Finale Was So Brilliant"
      "Game of Thrones fans can be a contentious lot, but the sixth season went out on a note of near-unanimous approval. That’s due in no small part to the contributions of director Miguel Sapochnik, who was responsible for the season’s last two episodes, “The Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter.” BuzzFeed’s Adam B. Vary vaulted “Winds” to the top of his ranked list of every Game of Thrones episode, with “Battle” and last season’s Sapochnik-directed “Hardhome” also in the top 10, and Vulture’s Sean T. Collins placed the same three episodes in his top 11. A Twitter poll by critic Alan Sepinwall gave the “Winds” opening sequence, depicting Cersei Lannister’s carefully orchestrated revenge plot, a Brexit-sized 52-to-48 lead over the “Hardhome” massive White Walker battle. While voting was still open, one of Sepinwall’s followers chimed in, “Whatever the results of this poll, we can all agree the real winner is Miguel Sapochnik." - *Slate*

When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king." That was Jon's first and only interaction with Tyrion in Winterfell.They don't even see each other again after the third episode! After that convo Tyrion follows Jon back into the feast as lights from the hall cast both their shadows. But shadows don't discriminate between dwarfs and regular sized humans. That was how GRRM described this oddity. " And for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king* is probably the very first subtle hint of Jon's parentage in the book. Of him being the Prince That Was Promised. That or Tyrion third head of the Targaryen Dragon theory confirmed lol. But yeah, as you see more of young Jon before he leaves for the wall in the book, you see him as the wily neglected boy who could barely hold his tears at how he's treated by everyone. So his journey in the show, with the ultimate payoff in the finale, strikes the emotional chord even more vividly.

    So with The Starks reclaiming The North and Cersei more or less castrating The Tyrells; The War of Five Kings is effectively over. Tens of thousands dead, bloodlines destroyed, lands ruined, and a kingdom divided. Cersei may be queen but what exactly is she queen of?
    The North hates her and made Jon their King, The Riverlands don't care for her and with Walder dead, lordship for it is up in the air, The Vale has signed on with The North, Dorne and The Reach want revenge against Cersei and The Iron Islands(Theon and Yara) have signed on with Dany, who'd obviously see her as a pretender to The Throne. All Cersei is queen of is a city that also hates her and The Westerlands(where Casterly Rock is) which according to Tywin in S4 is barren of the gold that once enrichened it.
    In terms of the political maneuvering and scheming, Cersei won the "Game of Thrones" but it cost her pretty much everything she coveted. Her children are dead and no doubt Jaime is not loving his trip down memory lane. This is what you could call as the end of act 2 of the overall story, with Seasons 7 and 8 being act 3.

My guess is that the ships were all located down near Dorne & now that Dany had her answer (and alliance) from Dorne & the Tyrells, she’s headed north, towards King’s Landing..

    Nothing to see here, just back to back episodes ranked in IMDB's Top 10 TV Episodes list. If Jon had taken Stannis' offer, it woulda been any. other. show. No matter how disagreeable his end was, a cataclysmic failure is necessary for the eventual success to mean anything. This was special to the masses because the river of shit they had to wade to get there. Just think back how long it has been, where these characters were when we started. What other show would have the balls? Mellisandre hinting "you know nothing Jon Snow" or Maester Aemon saying "a Targaryen alone in the world" or Lyanna Mormont's "Bear Island knows no King.." letter to Stannis. Bran's journey finally ending in the Tower. *All those moments are why the crowning at Winterfell feel so gratifying* . Nothing was given, it had to be earned. The last two episodes didn't exist in a random vacuum, all the prior season bleakness goes into creating the mood for the eventual turnover. *The longer the slowburn was the more memorable these moments became* .
    If you think that's nonsense, well it's all subjective opinion. What is not subjective is the viewership numbers of S5 & S6 & the 24 Emmys the two seasons won in total. Yep 24!

  • @FredtheFrisian
    @FredtheFrisian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Miya for sharing your journey through this season, despite your health problems!
    Regarding the seasons: I think it is hard to compare; season 5 was also not my favorite, but that might well be because it is a dark season in which many things happen that are difficult to watch. Luckily season 6 brought us relief and some long awaited justice. I personally think (and I hope you don't consider this a spoiler) that this episode (season 6 finale) was the best one (though I am not really into rating), if not surely "the biggest".
    There are that many big scenes in this episode, I could write a whole reaction page to this one; instead, I want to comment on a more trivial one: as a Dutch I want to comment that Daario Naharis was ordered to stay behind in Essos. I wanted to add that the actor, Michiel Huisman, also played a side character in the other great (Canadian) show, Orphan Black, during the same years. I don't know if you saw the show, but it's also an awesome one, definitely worth to watch. Also in that show he more or less vanished.
    I wish you good fortune on the seasons to come; I centainly did not see them as bad as a part "of the community" did; there are still a lot of great episode to look forward to.
    Warm regards from the Netherlands (land of Daario and Melissandre)!

    I don't think the Rat King's story applies to Arya, as she wasn't a guest in Walder's house, and anyway, she did harm to him not the other way round. As to her getting thee quickly - well, we don't know how long it's been, do we? She might have left Braavos months ago.
    What does get me is: when and how did she learn to use the faces? And why is it no longer harmful? She did it before, to kill Meryn Trant, though we never saw her have any lessons in this magic. Then Jaqen told her that to the untrained, the faces are as good as poison, and she lost her sight. How is it she can now kill Walder's sons, 'process' them, cook them, and then use a face she presumably stole from the House of B&W to infiltrate the castle, and it does no ham to her at all?
    It's a great scene, but ever since I first saw it, it has never made sense.
    People do get hung up on Varys being back with Dany, but think about it: he went to Dorne to make a deal. Then Olenna had to go back to Highgarden to plan the sailing of the Tyrell Fleet. Then the Tyrrell and Martell ships had to sail across to Meereen. I imagine at least some of them would need to be outfitted to carry not just troops but Dothraki troops with all their horses. While all that was happening Varys would have gone back to Meereen to plan the invasion with Tyrion, Dany and the rest. It's been months.
    Anyway, good to have you back.

    Cercei had basically accepted after Marcella died that the profecy was going to come true regardless. So she was able to let go of guilt or remorse for her actions leadinf to Tommins death because in her mind its "fate". Its such a stark contrast to her in the beginning of rhe series where everything she did was to protect her children from the fate the witch told her of. Her entire life she worked to prevent that prophecy and protect her children....but after M's death she realized there was absolutely nothing she could do to save them, so she gave in and decided she would just focus on whatever was in her own best interest. The last part of the prophecy said she would be Queen (for a time), so the fact that her Tommin's death meant she would be Queen is only further validating her belief that nothing could have been changed or done differently...this was always her fate. This was always her family's fate. She's just rolling with the punches now.

    Jon is Dyneras’s nephew, born from Ned Starks sister out of consensual love for the mad kings brother or son ( not clear on that) So Robert murdered everyone (including dany and her brothers younger and older siblings). For his fiancé falling in love with someone else, he made up the rape and kidnapping thing because his ego was hurt. And his best friend kept their love child under his nose in the north as his bastard ( risking his marriage and hurting his wife) but nephew, to fulfill his sisters dying wish.
