The cinematography of this battle scene was incredible. The sheer scale of how many people, horses, arrows, gore, etc. happening all around was captured soooo incredibly well. Like, wow, bravo!

The scene of the horses charging at Jon wasn't CGI... it was actually shot live with a very long lens to visually compress the distance.
Did you notice that the shield that Jon used to protect himself from Ramsay's arrows at the end had a bear sigil on it? Lady Mormont of Bear Island could only provide 62 soldiers, but at least one of them reached the battle inside Winterfell and his shield saved Jon. They were a valuable asset.
And the scene where Jon pulled himself off the ground and struggled to the top of the mass of soldiers, as he came out of the pile, the shot mirrored the scene where Danerys was lifted up by the masses of people when she liberated Yunkai in "Mhysa".

When Davos picks up the toy and the crimson sky behind him looks like Shireen's funeral pyre...what a beautiful shot! That shot of the white horse emerging out of the middle as all the horses charge...beautiful! That whole 30 sec clip of Jon rearranging Ramsay's face and that *"Your name will disappear* . *All memory of you will disappear"* ending...I can rewind those a million times! The VFX Artists React channel did a frame by frame analysis of Battle of the Bastards a little while back,it's got a million something views. They basically called it one of the best examples of blending CGI and various other aspects of cinematography in a war set piece they've ever seen. It still holds up years later.

One of the coolest parts about how they filmed this episode was where Jon is standing alone with the calvary charge headed for him. If you look at the behind the scenes Kit Harrington is ACTUALLY standing there with horses running at him at full tilt!

Battle of the Bastards is still one of the best period battle on my list, definitely on the small screen and probably even on the big screen. Most of the overproduced heroic period battles age like milk, this one still holds up pretty well. Because of the gritty rawness of the scenes, which always left me stunned. A very non romanticized blood and gore portrayal of war. *The overwhelming pile of corpses is exactly how a correct portrayal of a Battle of Towton type battle should be btw* . Everytime I rewatch there's a new visual analogy that I'd previously missed. Deserved every accolade it got, just how well it was filmed. If this was a hurricane, the finale is the tsunami!

@@tomdeluca5946 It was. There was no CGI CGI in those scenes. But it is a process of filmmaking. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings really paved the way for today's on-screen CGI battles. Let's just accept that for now, CGI animals are not good on screen. CGI is good for non-real animals and beings, which is why I think Hardhome worked so well.

  • @Tormund_Giantsbrain

Kit Harrington did a deep dive on how the trampling scene was a metaphor for the rebirth of Jon. Jon by the time of the battle is a man beaten down by circumstance. His increasingly agitated interactions with the people closest to him is reflective of his inner despondence and self-doubt. This is a man betrayed by his own Brothers. A man who's lost faith. That iconic single shot of Jon zig zagging through the field dodging arrows and horses is the height of his resignation to fate. That's the point where he's on auto pilot with a singular purpose to kill or die. Probably the best way to remain alive in a pitched battle, when you've already accepted you're as good as dead. But as the crush starts and he gets buried under a mass of humanity, he's finally forced to slow down. There's a shot of his face looking almost blissful, like he's finally at peace with the end. But in this process of letting go he also regains the humanity he had lost after being betrayed. From under that stampede he finds a new desire to live stronger than before, and as he comes up gasping for air, he emerges a man reborn. THIS, is the real Resurrection of Jon Snow. Or as director Miguel Sapochnick calls it, 'the vaginal birthing shot' lol. It's a parable for the reawakening of The North. The turning point. Jon being raised above the stampede mirrors another similar turning point moment. To S3 finale "Mhysa" where Dany is held aloft the human tide, except the circumstance is turned over its head figuratively and literally. Btw after hearing the slow sad version for so long, that "triumphant reprise" of the Stark theme as they break through the Bolton lines is perfect use of emotive BGM.

It makes way more sense that the Boltons fall at the hands of the family they betrayed than a rando like Stannis. If the Boltons lost a season or two ago, it would've been Any. Other. Show. This was special to the masses because the river of shit they had to wade to get there. Think back how long it's been, where these characters were when we started! What other show would have the balls? Mellisandre saying "don't you wanna chase the rats out of Winterfell" or "welcome home lady Stark, the North remembers". So many seeds. Nothing was given, they made you earn it. The pleasure of dogfood Ramsay doesn't exist without the winter wedding. The last two episodes didn't exist in a random vacuum. All the prior season bleakness goes into creating the mood for the eventual turnover. *The longer the slowburn was the more memorable these moments became* . One can disagree, it's all subjective. What is not subjective is this being in the IMDB Top 10 Episodes List, or the viewership numbers of S5 & S6 or the 24 Emmys the two seasons won in total!! "You know what would've been better? If Sansa told Jon". You know what would've been even better? If Tywin sent word to KL that he was coming to attack Stannis. At least Sansa had the excuse of Jon being honorable to a fault to team up with LF.

Ramsay does exactly what William the Conqueror did in Battle of Hastings. That answers the plausibility of the strategies applied. The heaps of bodies is what Bosworth Field, Tewkesbury, St Albans, and other War of the Roses battlefields looked like. The close range combat, the human pile, the stomping, even the horse charge was done irl. The horses charged full speed and stopped about five feet from him. No room for error. The filming location was a field in Belfast, in mud, dirt and rain over weeks with an unprecedented number of extras. The CGI is flawless. Deep diving into the three questions raised about the battle. One is Jon being too lucky. If that one-take makes him look too "lucky", that's deliberately done to show no amount of skill would save you in a battle without luck. The camera follows him, but he's not the only one going through the same hell. All hundreds or thousands of survivors in every medieval pitched battle had the same "luck". Second is Jon's thought process, Jon didn't chase Ramsay cause he was fooled and lured out, he chased Ramsay cause he was mentally ready for and almost yearned a respectable death in the battlefield over the deceit and treachery that lead to his death the last time around. He was looking for an easy out. Rickon running in a serpentine pattern wouldn't have mattered either as Ramsay had hundreds of archers pointing at him. He was simply toying with his food. Third is the Vale being ex machina. Well sometimes predictability is good. The long list of subversions it took to get here counterbalances the ex machina. The logistics isn't much different from Stannis arriving at the Wall or Tywin's assault on King's Landing.Tywin didn't tell anyone either. Sansa's only option was to hide it from Jon as righteous Jon would've outright rejected Petyr's offer. No wonder the episode was as big as it was, they aimed to please the vast majority instead of the terminally unhappy ones. The last finale Mother's Mercy was so subversive it left a bitter taste in the mouth. This was the golden opportunity for an olive branch and give them that rare happy ending.

This was Theon Greyjoy's William Wallace speech in that fateful season two finale, right before he was betrayed to the Bolton. "And whoever kills that horn blower will stand in bronze above the shores of Pyke! What is dead may never die!" Did you make that connection when Ramsay was blowing a horn at Theon's face while he was being tortured? Welp, here we finally are! What a wicked voyage it has been!

I said at the last finale that a constant theme of GoT is that every season people crave for a comeuppance, every season the carrot gets dangled and at the last moment it gets snatched away brutally. A running gag of the show was people saying "if so and so dies (or don't die) I'm done!! We hate to admit it, but there's something about getting hit over the head with morbidity over and over again that makes you keep coming back for more. Probably as you start sensing from the build time alone that when you do get that elusive payoff, it'll be glorious. Well there it is at last. Imo it was every bit as cathartic as it would be at the end of an excruciatingly long road full of heartbreaks. Because you had to go through the grinder to get to the fanservice. I felt this was the right time to pull the trigger. Bastards used to be one of the most 'reacted to' tv episodes. You can see the gamot of emotions it brought out from fans who'd been waiting so long for the Stark banner to fly over Winterfell. For them this was one for the ages! I think the finale's even better. That Roman encirclement captures the random cruel chaoticness of war really well.

When I think of what it set out to achieve : purifying vengeance, Bastard Bowl fully lives up to its reputation. I'd say it still gets me hype just like it did when I first saw it, do they ever drop the motherload! After holding off for so long it's that pitch battle that we came close to many times but always got denied in the past. Which puts a bow to the frequently overlooked story spanning two whole seasons of the slow death of Jon's soul, a death more meaningful than the death of his flesh at the wall. A death that parallels the Northern death under Bolton yoke, with the Batttle of Winterfell being both their symbolic revival and restoration. This is probably my fav GoT episode. It can't be said enough that vengeance would not be as sweet as it was without that unique and prolonged buildup. It's the virtues of patience, good things come to those who wait.

I don’t know if anybody noticed this but the whole battle is supposed to parallel Jon’s resurrection. When he’s buried that’s when he supposedly died. Him emerging is supposed to be when he was resurrected. When he was looking around he was hopeless and lost until Sansa comes and gives him purpose. Jon beatin up Ramsey is parallel to Jon executing the mutineers.

The handful of book purists get extra defensive about this ep cause they know how hugely successful it was and just how much the casuals love it, with it winning all those awards and being a a top ranked ep on imdb and whatnot. That's why they gotta go overboard to shit on it. I knew how depraved the purists were when everyone in the world was gushing about how this was the most goated thing on tv, the bitter petty jealous Monday Morning Medieval Battle QBs at GOT and Freefolks subreddits took a break from making Ramsay S.A. jokes to put up a megathread about how stupid the battle is because of the dramatic arrival, as if Stannis didn't do the exact same shit to Mance or even Tywin to Stannis at Blackwater Bay in the books. It would've been really helpful if Cersei knew about Tywin's plan, she wouldn't have nearly poisoned Tommen. Why didn't Sansa let Jon know? You think someone as sanctimonious as Jon would've taken help from Baelish? Only thing Sansa could do was to try holding him back, but Jon was dead set on an offensive, and nothing she said stopped him. She had no guarantee the help was coming either, it could've easily been false hope. Ramsay couldn't have done anything to stop a head-on arrival as his army was depleted. Inevitability doesn't mean bad. If the last segment was something disruptive like previous seasons, purists would've thrown fits about them effing you over again. Unbelievable fickleness. But that's when I knew the show is doomed, when the fandom itself was hellbent on tearing down one of the best episodes ever made for tv. If you can suspend disbelief for zombies & faceless ninjas, you can do one for Davos finding the toy. Imagine being this petty. It's not about how many square inches is needed for correct cavalry placement, it's about appreciating the wild ups and downs these characters went through. But most purists are EQ vacuums and try to make up for it by knit picking technicalities. The lesser their understanding of a storyline progression, the more confidently they complain about the very ingredients that made the show as successful as it was. To purists it's almost as if GRRM's greatness cannot be established unless you go out of your way to shit on everything else. I've seen toxic fandoms, but the pettiness and sycophancy of the freefolks sub type Asoiaf purists hellbent on pissing on even all the good stuff is next level psychotic.

Yay!! Miya is back!! Daenerys definitely isn’t overrated she got her haters like every other badass queen dont listen to them! A dragon doesn’t concern herself with the opinion of the sheep! This is my favorite episode of the series!! Starting with Dany & her defeating the masters & then joining & changing the iron born! & the battle of the mf bastards!! Sansa was a c*unt for risking Jon & the few northern houses that supported her & the wildings just so she could seem like the hero! Glad she got her revenge tho but she should’ve told Jon about LF & the knights for the Vale!! Her face when she saw Jon still alive made me feel a way 😑 but yea Jon’s plot armor was very thick this episode!! Like Arya’s in the last one

oh please. it's better she didn't say shit to him because clearly he lost that battle by getting too emotional. he allowed ramsay to manipulate him instead of listening to sansa and realizing rickon was a dead man. he brought that battle loss on himself. he should've stuck with his plan, but he abandoned it and put his people in danger. sansa was right to have littlefinger under her sleeve, a perfect backup plan in case shit went left. if she'd told jon, they'd all have died on that field. and what face? ya'll are so weird thinking she wants her brother to die. the face she made was for _ramsay_ trying to get away. your fave jon fucked up, stop putting that on sansa.

@Garden Rose TBH that's a really interesting take, I've never thought about it in that exact way probably got distracted by just the number of soldiers aspect never thought that even with the increased numbers his approach may still have led to them getting surrounded, naturally it would of been harder to do but not impossible and if Bolton's army had surrounded them they'd be fucked. I'm you highlighted the Impact of Jon's emotional rash decision to charge in and in turn force his men to do the same

Yoooo. I remember watching Battle of the Bastards live during the NBA finals where Lebron and the Cavs came back from 3-1 down to win the title against the Warriors. Someone at the bar said Littlefinger came in more clutch than Kyrie Irving!!!😂 This was an awesome experience!

that tyrion dany conversarion about the mad king burning cities is signficant for our queen and placed in a way where it's gonna be the last thing on your mind. Tyrion talking about the caches stored under king's landing by the mad king is also a well placed hint of what's going to happen next. There's the superficial aspects of the battle which look optically outstanding. But the battle is as much a tale of the demise of Jon Snow's spirit & its rise from the ashes as it is about the actual fighting. That 'reverse parallel' with Daenerys from the ending of the third season is ingenious, right before the revelation about Jon. It's a remarkable once in a lifetime ep.

Waaay back when, I told you there were 3 things you had to overcome to no longer be a “Sweet Summer Child”: Ned’s Death, Red Wedding, & For the Watch. Then I said the vengeance will be sweet. Jon hung his killers & now Ramsey’s death. There’s still more vengeance to be had! Welcome baaa-aaaaak!

What an amazing insane balls to the wall experience! Out of the blood, dirt, spilled intestines and a mountain of dying men, ascends the great hope! It's the dawn after the dark! The reign of Richard III is over. Henry Tudor wins his crown in the field and becomes Henry VII. All rejoice!! Mellisandre's prophesy of seeing the Bolton banners being lowered to the ground is fulfilled. After Episode 6 of Season 2, finally the North belongs to the Starks once more. It's a homecoming fitting for the Kings of Winter.

      *A Longer Excerpt* :
"It was a fitting ending for the character whom The Atlantic’s readers determined to be the actual worst on television, across shows and genres, and whom The New York Times also dubbed, without irony, the “Most Hated Man on TV.” As my colleague Lenika Cruz has noted, one of the challenges Game of Thrones’s creators have faced as they have attempted to create plot lines that marry literary merit and fan service was to kill Ramsay off-his death was almost inevitable-in a way that would offer a satisfying mix of karmic justice and audience catharsis. Ramsay has inflicted so much pain, on his victims and by extension on his TV viewers, that few things would seem quite appropriate to that task. “He confounds many of the rules that would usually apply to small-screen villains,” Cruz wrote, “so it’s unusually difficult to imagine a departure that would hit all the right storytelling notes.” And yet: With the death Ramsay was ultimately given-particularly bloody, particularly painful, particularly degrading-Game of Thrones managed to give its worst character an ending that was, to the extent such things can be, fitting. This was not only because of the what-goes-around-comes-around mauling Ramsay endured at the hands (or, more precisely, the jaws) of his own weaponized beasts. It was also-and more so-because of the words Sansa sent him away with. Ramsay’s death was, in the end, not about Ramsay so much as it was about Sansa. A show that is deeply interested in its own portrayals of justice gave its audience an execution that was bloody and sticky and screaming and salivating; the scene got its gravitas, though, from the death warrant Sansa, Ramsay’s victim, read at its start. It was the scene’s words that gave it its moral heft." - *The Atlantic*

The protagonist who is emotionally reconciled to an honorable death at battle after going through betrayal, making a suicidal dash towards the enemy formation in pursuit of his kin is literally taken out of Gilgamesh, the oldest recorded epic in human history. A similar concept is also in Mahavarta, one of the oldest eastern epics in the style of Iliad. But none of it makes sense to the type of inc3ls who dwell on r/freefolks because wearing the fedora too tight cuts blood circulation to the brain. No wonder George Martin said he hates his own "fans". The purist coping and seething over battle of the bastards has become particularly visceral over time as it really chaps their azz that countless people loved every second of this greatness. All the revisionist coping in the world won't be able to change the objective fact that this has become embedded in modern pop culture forever due to the tremendous acclaim it received. Look no further than just how much the character Jon Snow has become embedded in our pop culture. None of that can be erased. This was the most legendary shit when it dropped. Don't ever let these cl0wns get it twisted for you.
