Love your content K6, but you still fail to mention (And I understand, it's because it doesn't affect you personally, and I don't hold it against you, or anybody) one of the most fundamental flaws of BL3, which has been with it since it's inception.
I speak of keyboard/mouse gaming for players who choose not to stick with the now-standard (for some reason incomprehensible to me) WASD standard keyboard layout.
In previous BL titles (and basically any other game that's not ancient/ultra-low budget), you can remap the standard key layout to fit your gaming preferences, and for the most part, suffer absolutely no consequences or tradeoffs for doing so.
In bl3 however, this would result in the consequence that, for example, you couldn't map your grenade to exactly the key you wanted, and would have to settle for some other key somewhere near where you wish to actually set it (which I believe was fixed recently, and am still super-happy for).
Beyond that, for another example, there is the still present trade-off that, because I choose to play with an ESDF layout instead of WASD, I have to accept that transitioning to another map whilst in a vehicle is simply not possible. This means, in a new playthrough, if I want to progress the story by entering Ascension Bluff, for example, I have to drive to the transition point, make sure I'm not parked too closely to it, get out of my vehicle, walk up to and activate it, and then on the other side of it walk to a catch-a-ride and spawn a new vehicle, before I can continue on.
Sure, it's admittedly a minor trade-off, but it's immersion breaking, and a major pity to have such a minor oversight ruin a fundamental little bit of QOL in a modern and also (admittedly GREAT) AAA title.
There are other examples, I'm sure, but for the sake of brevity, they need not be included here.
Come to think of it K6, I have a new playthrough challenge for you. I know you've done a KB/Mouse playthrough before, and found it not as bad as you thought, but still prefer a gamepad, but I challenge you to a keyboard/Mouse playthrough where you DON'T use the WASD key layout for movement.
I'm not going to go crazy and stipulate “you must remap every single key”, or anything Draconian like that, but you must change the movement keys from WASD to absolutely anything else that suits you, and can change as many or as few other keys as you like to what would feel good for you to play with (and feel free to make any other adjustments along the way, if something else would work better, just so long as your MOVEMENT keys aren't WASD).
Feel free to limit yourself to any character, gear, manufacturer, other restrictions you wish, if you wish to, but I'd love for you to put yourself in the shoes of keyboard gamers who don't subscribe to WASD! (As any HARDCORE PC gamer knows, WASD is the devil! 😈).
Keep up the great content. I look forward to you picking up this challenge.

One of the awful things I can't stand is how, after multiple mainline games, the cutscenes just act like the VH doesn't exist. We talk to Maya and apparently just watch as she dies. Don't even fire off a round to hopefully wing either of the Twins. Actually, scratch that, there's one time where the cutscenes remember we exist and it's when Troy makes it so we can't do anything to effect the outcome.

The Calypso Twins felt like wasted potential, honestly. It felt like there was going to be an interesting subversive split between Troy and Tyreen, but it fizzled out immediately and the direction they went with just feels sloppy by comparison. The demented streamer concept isn't a bad one by itself, but the execution of it just screams that it could have gone over so much better than it did.

Especially concerning Tyreen and her dreamily talking about Aurelia killing her own brother... Where is the follow-up on that? It would have made a massively different storyline. Possibly even one where Troy would have been forced to switch sides after an attempt by Tyreen, or Troy could have killed her in said attempt, leaving him the solo baddie with all her powers as well. Both in my opinion would have been much better endgame stories.

    • @mrbigglezworth42

They are wasted potential, made worse that the moment Troy starts to get any real characterization and an actual spine to start pushing back against his more domineering sister...he dies. There was a real change to his character there, compared to Tyreen who starts as a bitch, and stays a bitch.

Mate, I'm the same, after years of playing the borderlands series I'm still the only one out of all my friends who plays any of the borderlands series. But I have done multiple farms of the raids bosses in bl2 except that gaint stalker in hammerlock dlc. You just need to be patient and get the right gear. If you just want to cheese them just gate crush master Gee or bore hyperius if you are zero, or just play broken Salvador at engame (ahab-pimp glitch). They are solo-able just do some research (there are plenty of tutorials of bl2 raid bosses) and gear up. I'm not trying to be a smart arse or anything just trying to help another player as much as I can.

I have to agree. With friends, raid bosses can be a fun challenge (except for Master Gee, fuck him), but tbh unless you really know how to cheese the game, beating the raid bosses solo is almost impossible on your own-not to mention it depends on the character you use. Like, if you play Krieg or Zer0 you have a much better chance at soloing, but anyone else and you’ve got an upward climb.

I appreciate how much you put into speaking both the praises and shortcomings of this game, but just one point on Ava - part of why some of the community (myself included) is because she doesn’t feel like she does anything that Maya couldn’t have. Maybe a takedown at the Hyperion prison where an invincible broke out and took control now you have to fight through the prison to get to the fight, and maybe they could've added a wildlife takedown with hermivourous and vermivourous at the end. Then just add a classic mode to all 4 that unlocks after beating the takedown at least once where for 500 eridium you can skip straight to the raid boss

Amara transition towards the end was smooth af but I agree with all of this. Especially the part about the story, Maya's funeral scene, and lack of Athenas. The most beautiful planet gets one map, a super memorable character gets a less memorable death, and the story is even more forgettable. I love the game, wholeheartedly. Don't get me wrong. And Troy was being set up to look like he'd betray Tyreen but ya know. Both of the cringe twins were, well, annoying and cringey. Katagawa could've been the final boss or close to it. But hey, bl3 as a whole, is a good, very fun and beautiful game.

Borderlands 3 was never going to have a villain that surpassed Handsome Jack. Handsome Jack is one of the greatest antagonists in video game history, it's not an easy task to replicate or surpass that. That said, it COULD have been done. But with fans demanding new products within a relatively short time frame and the need to renew the brand, there likely just wasn't enough time to create a new Handsome Jack. He ticked basically every box that can be checked by a villain, and he was hilarious to boot, which made us all love him despite the fact we hated him as well. Honestly to create a character worthy of succeeding him and surpassing him is a task any developer would struggle with. Because they'd inevitably run into difficulties trying to make them similar but different, and it'd end up feeling like a knock off version of him. With the way the universe is set up, I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to Palpatine his way into the next game somehow. Be the man controlling everything, including whoever you believe is the main villain. It didn't work for Star Wars but thats because of their piss poor writing. Just imagine having a scene appear after the "big bad" of the next installment is defeated and Handsome Jack's voice comes out of a speaker and says "Wow! Long time no see sweetheart! You've been busy! Me? Well it's kind of a long story, but let's just say that I'm awesome and leave it at that...k pumpkin?"
And boom...a road to the following game with hype out the ass because we get to go against Jack, who's had all these years to spend plotting and building tech that is going to absolutely fuck us up when we see him.

Although I disagree about no longer having to farm weapon parts, since I PERSONALLY like farming for highest damage rolls alongside perfect anointments. But even with that it 100% is still a lot easier on this game over BL2. The people that complain about drop rates being too high either need something to complain about, or don’t go for good anointments or good prefixes/parts. Otherwise the argument doesn’t make sense to me. Been watching you and joltz for the past 6 - 7 years and you both consistently put out great content. Great video and keep up the good work!!!

I personnaly don’t like the drop rates of BL3. even though I spend thousand hours of both games, I like playing the game casually, without looking for specific weapon parts/anointments. In fact, the game is easy enought to be completed without looking for any of this stuff. No, the complains about drop rate is linked to the topic of pearlescent drop : I need something to hunt, something visually extraordinary, not something like looking in a pile of dozen similars items just to get the extra 2% damage or a side effect that matters most than the weapon itselft…

But I can’t agree with you about annointments, the most that do is make bad/subpar weapons usable. But good weapons like the monarch and free radical don’t need them. The most they do is let you kill bosses faster than you would have. But you’d be perfectly capable without them. Just my opinion though. I wasn’t a fan at first but after time with changes I don’t mind them anymore.

I don’t think the twins where that terrible. They had the same issue I had with Ava, the writing doesn’t make you care about them until it’s too late. You didn’t need to reveal they where Typhon’s kids until the end, put it right out in the beginning. That would have made them far more interesting and deepen their motivations.
Cutting the funeral was the worst thing they could have done to Ava’s character. After I say that I actually started to want to see her grow as a person. Also putting her story on a side quest was a poor decision as well. How many players said “wow that’s girl is terrible I don’t want anything to do with her” immediately, even more so after she got Maya killed, never playing that quest.

I think the main problem with the villains and story in Borderlands 3 is that they aren't focused on the player character. They're rivals for Lilith and the Crimson Raiders. They hardly even talk to you directly, they're always mocking Lilith and other characters. You're just an afterthought.
What made Handsome Jack work was that he was always focused on the player. You start the game off having been betrayed and blown up by Handsome Jack, and you're out for revenge. Then he tricks YOU into doing his dirty work for him. It's about the relationship between the villain an the protagonist. Borderlands 3 makes the mistake of making NPCs the protagonists of the story, instead of the player character.

    • @Shad0wchasers1

Handsome Jack also makes a mistake in BL2, by forgetting that Lilith was a siren. He was so focused on you giving him access to Sanctuary that he forgot about Lilith and she was able to teleport the city away. But then he LEARNS from that mistake and doesn't make it again, kidnapping Lilith to further his plans.
The Twins... they're just arrogant and focused on Lil the whole time. Even if you're playing a siren, they have no interest in you. It makes no sense if Amara is RIGHT THERE that they wouldn't try to leech her powers, too. But they never even talk to her.

I'd have removed her from the game and given her role in the story to the player characters: Have the players argue with Lilith, have the players go off on a tear because they've been goaded into making a mistake by the Twins, have Maya die because of something WE did, and then have us try to get revenge and make peace with Lilith. Same arc, but make it about the players instead of NPCs. The story would have been much more compelling and the villains would have meant much more to us.

My Moze isn't only built around one specific weapon type, but also one manufacturer. Pistols only and Torgue only Unkempt Harold build (all elements) with Iron Cub, Revolter, Torgue Company Man and Mind Sweeper. Got as much Pistol and Weapon Damage on my gear as possible paired with Action Skill Cooldown Reduction and I can semi spam my Action Skill and keep up my Revolter for a good amount of time. Does melt most of things.

I actually quite e joyed the Calypsos. I thought they were a pretty good satire of modern streamer culture, especially recently where divisive public figures can build up quite a culty following in actual real life.
And as an older player with a teenage daughter, I can safely say, in Ava's defence, they're just like that! 😉
No mention of Arms Race. I personally really liked it, just wish they had added more maps, or a way to continue playing/progressibgif you've found good gear and reckon you could go again (or even better, progress to a second or third map)
Great video though, well thought out and I think you got it pretty much bang on.

You hit it pretty square on the head sir.
I am going to be firing the game back up in the near future, and poking around the new vault card(s)? (did they release all 3 now?) but I'm just not sure how much love is left for me with BL3. The final level cap, with no new content (I know, I know, we got the seasonal events permanently. I mean NEW) was such a kick in the teeth for me, especially when it just cemented a complete abandonment of the idea that they weren't just going to throw skill points at players, because the skill trees were supposed to be more impactful in BL3.
I defended GBX for a while. I stuck with them through some very rough patches.
But it just felt like they either didn't learn from the backlash when they made mistakes, or just didn't care.
Having a massive Farming Event and then following it up with previously unannounced level cap increase MULTIPLE TIMES was just too much for me.
Maybe I'll swing back through for Wonderlands. You're still one of the best streamers in the biz, and even though I don't get to watch because of the new job, I'm letting that subscription ride. You deserve it.

I play with my cousin, who introduced me to borderlands 2 back in 2012, and we enjoyed borderlands 3 more than ever. We rebooted with new characters and man, the game was so much smoother and less buggy making gameplay feel exponentially better.

I miss pearlescent gear, and I think many players wanted another tier of rarity to chase in the endgame. This would most likely extend the longevity of bl3 because with how generous the game is with loot drops. I think having another tier to grind new rarity gear would be something to keep players invested well after wonderlands comes out. But I'd imagine the devs are trying to focus more on TTW than bl3 now that it's been announced.

I feel like if they just added pearls in BL3 and made them as rare as they were in BL1 and add 1 new raid boss and a new armory that have a chance of dropping pearls it would add endless replay value. If they don’t add them I feel like they aren’t going to add them to wonderlands either which wonderlands will end up in the same state as borderlands 3 is in now

    • @DiceDweeb16
      @DiceDweeb16 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@canontheory Yeah. 1 more raid boss/takedown would be so satisfying. Or like you said, a big chest room like the armory dlc. Vaulthaulla is cool, don't get me wrong. It's just not as expansive as the original Knox boss chest room from bl1. I also hope that TTW shows more loot diversity via the melee weapons or spells that they incorporate in game. Maybe even a new tier of rarity to chase after. I'd be happy with that or pearls either way.

I personally missed TPS' personalized interactions between playable characters and non-playable ones. Like yeah the playable characters have their own unique dialogue, but other characters still just kept calling them "Vault Hunter", even after your character introduced themself. For all of TPS' flaws, that's one thing that it did right, the character interactions. Moxxi had unique words depending on whether she was talking to Athena, Claptrap, Timothy, Nisha, etc, and so did Jack, among other characters. Hell they had such a long base game that they could've easily done *more* of that than TPS.
Like, for example: Amara meeting Lilith. Amara seems to recognize the significance of meeting another siren, Lilith acts the same no matter if it's Amara or not. They really could have done some more with that. In Arms Race, they could've had Axton commenting on the similar backgrounds between him and Moze. Or Fl4k and Mordecai in the base game bonding over both having pets helping them in battle, or Fl4k and Zer0 comparing notes on each other's tactics when they go invisible. They just missed quite a bit of character interaction potential.
Sidenote: Why don't we have any scenes of Krieg meeting Ava? Ava is literally the person who inherited Maya's powers, that's going to have significance to Krieg. Ava would've been a great addition to the Krieg DLC and given more opportunity for her character to be developed more. And her seeing Maya again in Krieg's mind... yeah.
Side-sidenote: Also why does Krieg have Lilith, Brick and Mordecai in his mind but not Roland? Sure he wasn't around Roland as long but Roland was the nicest of the 4 original VHs, a calm presence, and well Roland literally dies in front of Krieg (like he did for all of 2's VHs). Another missed opportunity.

Favorite dlc by far of them all is Krieg's, it's the only dlc that I played a few times over simply because of the story along with the smaller side quests that also add even more about him. It wasn't too long and everything was rather direct with getting things done with no excess dialogue. At the end of each boss, you learn about what Krieg thought of those involved, etc.

Story the twins should've had more or two sides the on air that everyone sees, then "serious evil villian" they only show to you. (They kinda do it near the end.) Have the main heroes act dumb send in a siren again someone who steals powers, giving control of raids to Ava not someone older with leadship experience (like Axton or have brick and moricci step up) on the more of Axton they added 4 of the 6 bl2 characters in dlcs but having them in base game in form of echo logs would've been nice. No needing or wanting to play tvhm These are some of my main ideas others that were fixed legendarys didn't feel special, no target dummy to test on from start. And more fun game but 2 is still my favorite.

  • @TheLordDragonX
    @TheLordDragonX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's time for another thrilling episode of "Points and counter-points from the Dragon!"
Best #10: Quicker farming. No argument here. While I played BL3, farming for *Insert thing here* was indeed much smoother and faster. However, one thing you mention in this part: "Loot pools are crowded." Far too much in the pools made for many hours of getting multiple things I didn't want, to POSSIBLY get something I did.
#9: Audio and visual improvements. Again, no argument here. And much like you in this part, I'll save the pollution for later.
#8: Characters: Yes, this installment of BL has some of the most memorable characters ever. Interactions between most work, some don't.......and ICE CUBE IS A FOUL-MOUTHED TEDDY BEAR!!!
    #7: Maliwan Takedown: Yes.......'nuff said.
#6: Balancing: Here, I must disagree. Reach lv. 72, go to Mayhem anything, get pretty much any gun, one shot everything without a forced invincibility period. Even then, you one shot them TO the invincibility period. That's not balanced. That's Salvador, everyone's favorite cheat code in BL2. Every vault hunter in BL3 is Salvador. Get that one gun, one class mod, and one artifact, and you're an invincible, infinite ammo/grenade, no ultimate cooldown having walking nightmare. Everyone was so angry with BAR in BL2, that they turned it off, but even without Guardian rank on, everyone can one-shot God Mode everything. BL2 was better. Godliness was earned. BL3, it's given.
#5 DLC writing: Absolutely. If only, like you said, the main story had followed suit, many might be still playing it today. We'll get into pre-pubescent pre-teens later.
#4: Legendary diversity. Agreed, but it was way too diverse. You one breath named nearly 25 things, out of the few hundred available at this point. Given you probably named the better ones, and not the ones you look at, and say "Why the fu** is this on my screen?!!", which is most of the stuff in the game. And much like every BL game, the lesser loot, *Purple and below* are just renamed versions of the same item. Same power, accuracy, handling, mag size etc., different name. Large diversity is not always a good thing.
#3: Build variety: Yep, one build to one shot mobs, and one build to one shot bosses. Such a large variety. And mayhem just makes it worse. As mentioned in #6, get a lv. 72 mayhem anything gun, mod and artifact and BAM, instant Godhood. UVHM in BL2, yes, wasn't the most balanced thing, but it made you properly strategize your VH to the task at hand, not just get something that shoots death skulls to blow everything up.
#2: Free stuff!!!!!!: Indeed, but the free stuff, I don't think was more along the lines of "Have these free goodies just to have them.", more than it was "We are SO sorry that the endgame is absolute sh**. We forgot how to make raid bosses and pearls and gave you literally NOTHING to do after you beat the game. Take this free stuff as our humble apology."
HM: Multiple planets with multiple maps. Yeah, we all got tired of sitting on Pandora when there was an obviously large galaxy with many, many vaults out there, waiting to be hunted. No problems with this one.
#1: Quality of life changes. Although I absolutely agree with this, you said it yourself. It took Gearbox seeing what their PLAYERS were doing with community patches to say "Hey, we've been fu**ing it up all these years, we should do this right." If they want BL4 to be done right, they should hire the players to code it. We seem to do it right.

So what I liked about BL3 was that is was more casual in a good way, a lot of borderlands games can be especially brutal to first timers. BL1 comes to mind as level gaps there could be deadly. And TPS had some of the hardest most gruelling bosses of the series. So it was a nice change of pace to not get absolutely floored by a boss unless you were stupid. But the thing that made me dislike BL3 was that I don't feel like playing it all that much, after getting a couple of characters maxxed out there is very little motivation to get back into the grinding loop. To put it into comparison TPS made me want to make a character for every skill tree option we had where as BL3 is like yes there is more character diversity, but less motivation to see it to its potential. I guess mainly the lack of content probably is a driving factor but idk maybe I need to try co-op to refresh my perspective.

Sad that the Twin who actually had some character development died early. Tyreen was the weaker of the Calypso twins character wise. Heck, it would have been more interesting if Troy would have snapped from years of slights and verbal abuse and murdered Tyreen, stealing her powers and going insane as you progress towards the final battle.
As for Ava, they completely messed up with her from the start. Making her a little less annoying when you meet here and making the battle for Athenas into a 'scared straight' moment to set her on a better path. Had she buckled down and started working to be better, than even her causing Maya's death could have been used for better character development, rather than leaving her as a brat after the invasion and her causing Maya's death.

I honestly thought that's what they were going for with Troy because he actually had that feeling. While I hope BL4 comes out faster than the long break we received from 1to2 I do hope the next will be done right. Mayhem mode needs to be kept but no modifiers anoints can be kept but exclusive to pearls at a minimal rate to make pearls not only more desirable but increase the drive to farm. I was so lucky at lvl 65, had multiple CMT’s, a couple of close to perfect old gods, a Urad fire boom sickle, I even had a one shotter shield. And much more. Now my luck at 72 has been horrible. Making me even more burnt out on trying for those weapons again, when all I need is a revolter, a flipper, a light show, and a hell walker, and I can beat pretty much all the content in the game. I love the characters, I love the story arcs, I LOVE THE LOOT. On top of that, there is a whole bunch of content dropped that I feel gives good bang for your buck. Gearbox LISTENS, to the community. It has a live game feel without being a live game. It reinvents itself with each new iteration, making each new game eagerly anticpated (take Tiny Tina's Wonderland, for example). There is as much new innovation as there is a familiar nod to the old.
So for me, I can forgive the shortcomings, because what is so good about the games, outweighs them.
