My father died some years back in Northern Michigan. He was embalmed but it was a bad winter, and it would have been impossible to break the ground in that tiny town. In the spring, when the funeral was held, they offered a viewing. I declined, though others did not. My stepmom told me I made a good decision.

Thanks ladies, I enjoyed this episode as it struck home with me. We lost Mum two years ago, tragically in theatre during an op to mend a broken leg, so a real shocker to lose her. Obviously, the coroner got involved and we had to wait for p/m. Luckily, we were allowed to make an appointment to see Mum in the hospital morgue, although the room she was in was just like a chapel of rest. She still had her tubes in etc as they weren’t allowed to remove before pm. When she eventually arrived at the funeral home, we were advised not to see her and accepted that. You were right, you can’t unsee what you see and I now have that last image in my head. You have settled my mind thank you ladies. Hertfordshire Uk

Yes to a podcast! New subscriber here, and I am finding your content extremely interesting. My grandmother worked in a funeral home in North Carolina, USA for many years, and I used to go to work with her a lot when I was a kid. She was front office staff, so of course I didn't actually ever go into the embalming room when there were bodies in there, but I've always found deathcare to be fascinating.
You ladies do a wonderful job explaining this stuff! You are compassionate, but very matter of fact. I so appreciate that. Merry Christmas to you both.
A very good friend of mine died and no-one found the body for 3 weeks. 3 weeks in a 72°house! Of course it was closed casket. I always wonder what state his body was in when they found him. I get nightmares of body parts just falling off. 🥺

Hello ladies, I went to view my 95 year old Mum in the Chapel of Rest, 3 weeks and 5 days after she died. She wasn't embalmed. She looked peaceful but had red lips and a strangely wide mouth. Her nose had a dip in it but she looked very good. This was last week. She died of advanced Alzheimer's. I'm glad I went, I took pictures which give me comfort. Mum's funeral is on 6th April.
We are so very sorry to hear you have just lost your mum 😞 please accept our deepest condolences to you and your family 🌹🌹 Thinking of you today 💚 hope it's a beautiful service. Please take good care and always be kind to yourself 🙏💚💚

Hi Tracy and Trish If someone has to be held over for 4wks or so Where are they kept At the morgue or the funeral home Would they have cold rooms in both? Another question if you don't mind If a close family member passed away could you stay with them for the different stages of preparation for their funeral eg.be with them when they are washed styled and dressed I can remember one Auntie was always called when aa family member passed a few women would ans i was sent away to get rolls of cotton wool? This is usually home deaths Sorry for longwinded questions I have SO MUCH to ask you both Hope you don't mind G.
This is really interesting! Just found your channel. My dad had his brain removed for autopsy. So it was 3 months before he was cremated. He wasnt embalmed. The undertaker did say a viewing wouldn’t be advised. So i kind of guessed at what he would have looked like. You use the term skin slipping. What does that actually mean? Do people start to get mold on them? Like food in a fridge?
Hi, so very sorry to hear you have lost you dad 😢 sending you all our best 🌹🌹 Skin slip is when the skin begins to separate from the underlying tissue, often caused by putrefaction and bacterial growth after death. The skin just becomes delicate and tears easier and our skin holds in liquid, so when it tears it leaked fluid. Yes bodies will eventually get mold on them if not treat. We are all organic just like a piece of fruit that you have seen go rotten the human body god through the same changes naturally. Take good care of yourself 💚💚
That is a big question as it depends on a lot of factors. Such as how, where, when, temperature, water if any, cause of death and so on. So I really can not give you a definitive answer. Thank you take good care ❤️❤️
When my Mum died a couple of years ago, it was "expected" so she was transported to the Funeral director the same day. Her funeral was three weeks later. (I managed to get it all planned by three days after she passed). we had a viewing for her just close family members who wanted to, and she looked fine, if a little "grey" around the mouth and on her forehead, small areas. She wasnt embalmed. When my husband passed away suddenly and unexpectedly 6 months ago, because he was "young and healthy" there had to be a PM so we didnt get him back for almost a month, then we had to sort all the funeral and official stuff out so it was nearly two months before his funeral. Family members still wanted a viewing so I had to have him embalmed. He still looked okay. Obviously pale. His fingertips were a bit blue/grey in comparison which I expected. But he was red/purple across his forehead. I have no way of knowing if that was bruising from his death, or early decomp. Obviously he had been kept refridgerated during the pm/wait etc. Not that I'm concerned as I have worked with end of life, etc so am not unaware of death/dying processes and have seen enough dead people in my time. The other thing i noted was he looked very "swollen" almost to the point of distortion. I had to look really hard to make his features out, which was bizarre as he wasnt overweight or anything. Yet his face, chin and neck were definitely swollen. It was down his arms too. Reminded me of fluid retention, like when your feet swell up and you get that "crease" at the ankles. And his stomach looked a bit bloated and lopsided, like he had a colostomy bag or something but I put that down mainly to the damage to his chest from the CPR. Would any of this be a result of the embalming process? Is it normal for embalming to cause that much fluid bloating? Sorry if this is all a bit graphic but thats the way I process things.
Hi there, yes, sounds like he was overembalmed. Sometimes this is done on purpose for different reasons. We are sure the mortician involved did the best they could - we hope you are doing ok💙
Odd question! But I’m a tattoo artist in the uk and I’m curious if you could tattoo a body? I’d like to have my tattoo artist friends give me one last tattoo. Would that be possible or has anyone done this that you know of? If embalming is or isn’t done? Thank you 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Hi Symone, never had that request before but if you wanted that done I personally would not have a problem with the tattoo artist coming in to do that. It would be better on embalmed skin as this firm's the skin up not sure if it would work well on un-embalmed skin as this can tear easier. It's definitely a different request, I have only had the request of removing a tattoo for the family to keep. Thank you for your question 😊 take care 💚💚

Hi do you have an email I can ask a personal question? I viewed my mum after 4 weeks and ended up with PTSD. The funeral home did not tell me she would look like she did.
Oh Emily, so very sorry to hear such sad news of your mum 😔 we both send you our deepest condolences 🌹❤️ Yes we do have an email it is - areyoudyingtoknow@gmail.com Will watch out for your email. Take good care 💚💚
We just had a loved one who died the end of November but because of the delay in post Morten and Christmas they are only being buried now. They are viewable? You think they were frozen in the hospital and if so how is it possible they still look fine?
Hiya, we are sorry for your loss and send hugs to you and your family. There is no way of us telling, without knowing all of the details, if they would be viewable, I'm sorry, but to give you an idea, the most I would be able to keep an unembalmed body for with constant application of cream etc would be a month provided there weren't other circumstances involved... If the person has had certain medications before death, if there was a delay between when they died and when they were refrigerated and the treatments done after death by the coronor and the mortician would all contribute to how they looked so long after death. It would be best for you to ask the funeral home if they are viewable and if not, why not. They may have been embalmed in which case, you may be fine to view, but you won't know until you ask.💜 I hope you can find peace in this awful situation. Sending our best wishes xx

Hi Rio, the family was advised by the funeral home that they shouldn't view the body because time had passed. We are guessing the body had started to disintegrate but we don't know all the details. Thanks for your comment.
Yes some family do viewing when we advise against. We can not stop any family only advise. We do have waivers to sign for theses cases and we will always offer support throughout. Thank you for your question take care 😊💚
In Sweden Most deseased have to wait in the fridge for at least 4 weeks, since most funerals only take place on fridays (for convenient reasons),and to my knowledge its not common practice to enbalm deseased People here(at least none in my friend/family zones ever been offered one). It strikes me now, when seeing this episode, that there ought to be an awful smell of decomposition when walking around the coffin saying goodbye, right? Or is it just masked with something? I would love to know how the procedures are done different in different parts of the world. I think in general, in Scandinavia, death is really taboo topic. You never hear anything about Whats being done after your dead up until the day of the burial. Makes death even more mystic and scary 😱 Btw Im all for a pod cast. I have a 30 minute drive to/from work every day, so that would really brighten those long drives. Have a merry christmas. Hope People never run out of question for you🎅/Robin
Hi Robin, thank you for sharing all that information. Wow had no idea about the way the funeral industry works in Sweden how bizarre to only have funerals mainly on one day 🤷♀️ I would really think that a lot of chemicals are been used in the coffin and funeral homes to mask the smells if no Embalming take place and deceased are held for such a long time. This is why we started this channel to get people talking about the one thing that will effect us all yet lots of cultures just don't want to talk about it and keep it hidden behind closed doors 🤷♀️ Thanks, we are trying to see if we can fit in a podcast too. Thank you for your support and watch this space. You and your family have a wonderful Christmas and New year 🎄🥳 take care 💚💚
That’s so sad. With the way things are with getting the help they need, delays are being put on a lot of things. Okay, I have a question. Is it true that more embalming fluid is more on the face?
Ok no it's not true, the face does not need a lot of Embalming fluids, it's one area you have to be super careful about as you can easily over embalm the face and head. Thank for your question Neil 😘 💚💚

What if the body didn't go through cancer treatment would the cancer still fasten the decomposition???
Hi, yes it would not be as fast as with treatment. ❤️❤️
You said the body shouldn't be taken in and out of the fridge, so how do you apply the cream every other day?
Hi, I just go into the cold room and place the cream on in there. 😊💚
Yeahhh podcast is greattt

Hi do you have an email I can ask a personal question?
I viewed my mum after 4 weeks and ended up with PTSD. The funeral home did not tell me she would look like she did.
Oh Emily, so very sorry to hear such sad news of your mum 😔 we both send you our deepest condolences 🌹❤️
Yes we do have an email it is - areyoudyingtoknow@gmail.com

Hahaha thanks user. Glad you like our style. 😁
Cavity aspiration and full index injection is standard procedure in the US on ALL cases. You wouldn't do otherwise here.
🤔 interesting.

Hi!! Why couldnt his mother have a funeral for a month after death? Is it related to the cancer? Was she abroad? Thank youuuu ❤❤
Hi Rio, the family was advised by the funeral home that they shouldn't view the body because time had passed. We are guessing the body had started to disintegrate but we don't know all the details. Thanks for your comment.
Merry Christmas from here in the UK 🇬🇧 can you actually view a loved one a year after they passed away I've never heard of that
Woo hoo Merry Christmas to you too Natalie and have a wonderful New Year 🎄⛄🎅
Stay warm 💚💚
Do families ever ignore "your advice?" For instance, providing a viewing WAY after they should have? What would be the backlash?
Makes death even more mystic and scary 😱
Btw Im all for a pod cast.
This is why we started this channel to get people talking about the one thing that will effect us all yet lots of cultures just don't want to talk about it and keep it hidden behind closed doors 🤷♀️
Thanks, we are trying to see if we can fit in a podcast too.
Hi Neil, thanks for your comment. I'm so sorry but we don't understand your question. What did you want to know?
@@Areyoudyingtoknow I had heard that when a person gets embalmed, more of the embalming fluid gets put into the face. Is that true?
My name is Neil
Hi Neil, sorry we know it's you 😊 the replay automatically puts in the name deview 🤦♀️ just did notice it. 💚💚
Ok no it's not true, the face does not need a lot of Embalming fluids, it's one area you have to be super careful about as you can easily over embalm the face and head. Thank for your question Neil 😘 💚💚
Lucky number 70❤❤🌹🌹 x
Very lucky x
