      And for what reason?
Of course because he had to wait for his friends to kill Zeke and stop the rumbling (this was theorized after 137) so that he could pull a "surprise mothafucka" on his friends when the Beast Titan would have been inherited by Historia's baby (who was of course his own baby in their mind) and he could have regained the power of the Founding Titan by touching him/her. So he would have been able to restart the rumbling, kill the rest of the world, including his friends, and claim his blonde prize.

I think Isayama tied a clever historical analogy into his story, but the show doesn’t promote antisemitism. Instead, it emphasizes on Gabi’s character development after having realized that hating Eldians for their ancestors’ sins was pointless, which in the real world would solve antisemitism, the source of which is “Jews crucified Jesus” and all that grudge crap.

What am I supposed to be feeling when Armin thanks him for it and then allows him to get off scot free while also getting away with lying to the Marleyans? And what's more is I get the same impression at the end that “mankind will always be at war because that's what we truly are” which is a lazy and defeatist message that completely undermines any moral argument the alliance had. I agree with Video dimension that it sounds more like an excuse a warlord would say after butchering people.

On my third rewatch because this really scratches an itch that I can't describe. This video is great. It's a shame it's so underappreciated because not only does it really get what made AnR and especially AOE so fucking insane, it also describes the larger plague on modern internet discourse of assuming one interpretation is fact and trying to scream your opinion louder. It's kind of an eternal battle; if you believe in your interpretation, it is because you believe you understood the story and what it was trying to tell you. When you see someone then yell at you for totally missing what the author was going for, their opinion must similarly be due to a lack of reading comprehension. Sometimes no one is right and you're fighting over what shape an optical illusion is, but other times there really is a critical lack of understanding, but it's so hard to get that across without seeming like the condescending, "you have no idea what you're talking about" tone that even those who are totally wrong will also use.
Also, I really appreciate how specific your language is, and overall think the writing in this video is incredible. I was trying to place whose style it reminds me of, thinking first of anime content creators like Geoff Thew or like older Digi videos. However, I think what this is closest to is something like Dan Olsen from the channel Folding Ideas -- this video almost seems like the anime adaptation of Dan's In Search of a Flat Earth video, in the way that people who are drawn to an emotional claim gravitate to conspiracy theory, alt-right ideologies, and bending reality to fit their theories rather than the other way around. Everything from the "at once unbelievably complicated and trivial to debunk" to the "admitting they're wrong would be embarrassing," and even the idea that sometimes when the prophecy fails (read: anime finally ends and it's basically the same as the manga), rather than breaking people out of their devotion to the theory, it rather exacerbates them and they move the goalposts yet further. Great stuff all around.

People would make fun of her in spite of her toxic stans, and some kids would take it in a literal way, because they can't distinguish these things. But to say, that it was based on Mikasa hate is completely false, on the contrary AOE tried to make Mikasa an interesting character in its own way. Again, people who were blabbering about how Eren will stopm her, slice her head off, or anything like that, are just retards/or trolling.

I'm only 16 minutes in, but I gotta compliment you for your work and editing!
The titanfolk/yeagerbomb folk seem batshit crazy to me, and I'm saying that as someone who felt Paradis was morally justified in using the Rumbling to eliminate the world that wanted them dead.
But those people really saw dead-eyed traumatized Eren talking about genocide to scared teary-eyed Historia and went "Yes, this is good romance"? They thought that Historia's pregnancy which was a clear cut and dry political move to not have to eat Zeke or run away, which is why she looked unhappy as it wasn't a pregnancy out of love but one out of necessity, that that was somehow a massive storyline ending up in Eren being the father? They thought Eren would brutally murder all his friends who he keeps throwing his life away to save and is ready to sacrifice the entire world too for that purpose, and that he'd just shrug after killing them all?
Or that for no reason at all, Historia's child would be the reincarnation of Ymir because... just what the shit at this point.
That's some of the worst and most bizarre fanfic I've ever seen, and to think they're spreading so much negativity and even trying to hurt Isayama's mental well-being...

Especially the scene with Eren and Armin, as if breaking down in front of your best friend right before you are about to die because you don't want to lose the love of your life that you spent your entire life protecting is some how considered character assasination. Despite there being massive hints that Erens cold nature was to protect his friends and ALL of Eldia.

I want to shine my perspective on the Aoe as I was a believer of it even after the anime ended. I was never really as connected with this section of the fandom, so I didn't think to question enough as to the depths and other explanations behind the reasoning for their theories. I never had a problem with the ending of the story other than that the manga ending felt rushed (which was thankfully fixed in the anime). The thing that a lot of the fandom hated such as Ymir's "love" for king Fritz was one of the things I had felt was well excuted. My reasons for that liking that aside, I didn't believe in Aoe out of a dislike of the ending, I believed in it because I thought that the evidence was credible enough to warrent that at least something was coming. There was a sound designer who had talked about its existence on tape, strange choices that the anime did when adapting material, trying to make sense of the berserk eren scene, Anr, and the connection to MudLuv. I wasn't hoping for an ending that the rest of the fandom wanted, but I saw these bits of evidence as a possibility that we'd get some more attack on Titan content in some way (without obliterating the story, character or its themes).
After watching this video, I realize just how much of the validity behind the evidence was stretched in order to fit this fanbases narrative, and I feel embarrassed to have indulged myself into this section of the fandom that is so clearly dethatched from reality. I was hyped for more attack on titan, and where I used to feel that the aoe fandom had decent points, because much of it comes from trying to validate their egos, none of the other explanations cross their mind. It's as you said, the only explanation they want to accept is that it's a bigger part of a non existent puzzle and a hopeful desire for their egos to be validated. I really appreciate you making this video and calling out the section of the communities for what they are.

im a manga reader who actually was fine with the ending and could not understand those people at all didnt take part in any community and just tried to make out the logic of the ending alone and to be honest it really was a clear conclusion, how eren was "slave to his desires", how history repeats, how conflict can never be wiped and all this stuff and for this reason seeing people judging those was VERY baffling to me, all i could pick was the little complaints like "eren crying in the end is out of character" but those are kicked out of the window easily too by just basically saying what the guy in the video said
after the anime version was completed and i watched it along with the slight changes of dialogue in the end i was 100% satisfied, i seriously could not think of any better way to end the series and just hated every AOE theory out there and also hated the whole fandom...ironic that my most favourite anime has my most hated community in it isn't it?

I always felt like aot using true historical references and real politics for the conflict within the story could have caused strong misinterpretation from all sides of the political spectrum and tbh I don't blame whoever believed that.
After this premise, the fascist interpretation from that part of the fandom will always surprise me and I can't deny that I gave up on aot because of that, since I didn't wanted to be involved in such vague themed story.
But in the end I am glad I stuck, I am glad I used my own brain and mostly I am glad i was always right: Eren is a villain, jaegerists are evil and Hange, Onyankopon and Armin, who are considered the smartest and most human characters from aot, ACTUALLY AND OPENLY STATED genocide is wrong(which seems a controversial take for those fasci).

    • @Hoogalindo
      @Hoogalindo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

So, I wanted to kind of elaborate on the pipeline towards plotchad-ery and then ending hater. For me and a lot of people it started when Titanfolk first began. Now, this is a while back so I can't 100% recall everything and may have a few things mixed up. The main AoT sub did a big purge of meme-y comments which lead to an exodus of shitposters towards Titanfolk. This created a very, very dense sense of community. If I recall correctly, it was around the time everyone thought Armin 'died'.. so very close to the Marley arc.
Everything was good and fine. People were happy and making dank as fuck memes and really interesting theories and enjoying the shit out of the story at the time. But somewhere along the lines, we either fell upon the ANR theory or someone in our community actually made it. At first, it was just a theory. No one really treated it as being confirmed but as an interesting 'what-if' sort of deal.
Now, you talked about Akatsuki no Requiem. It was, of course, the backbone to the theory.. but there were two other songs that pushed it just from being a neat little theory into what we assumed the story was going to be about - Call of Silence, Zero Eclipse, and Linked Horizon's Kimi ga Fusawashii to Omou Daimei. Like Akatsuki no Requiem, we analyzed the shit out of the lyrics of these three songs.
Kimi ga Fusawashii to Omou Daimei we immediately knew to be Eren asking what Ymir wanted which was a second chance at life. The baby crying at the song's end cemented it for us the idea of her rebirth.
Call of Silence we assumed was Eren making a promise to Ymir that he'd make sure she WOULD be reborn.
Zero Eclipse we analyzed as being about Historia and Eren's furtive relationship.
It fucking EXPLODED from there. Everyone convinced themselves ANR was canon - all of our interpretations slightly different. Myself, I believed the story would go something along the lines of this: Eren destroys the outside world after probably killing his friends, uses the power of the Founder to cultivate the wastelands left after, either takes Ymir's place as Founder after she's reborn or destroys the Power of The Titans entirely and in the process frees her to reincarnate, and spends the remainder of his life unable to let go of the past. He would unironically become what Titanfolk's strawman of Mikasa's character in 139. Someone who is constantly visiting his friend's graves.
You know what happens next. We utterly DESPISED the ending. I won't speak for others anymore but myself from now on. I hated it for the longest time and was incredibly bitter about how it all went wrong. But something happened. I noticed that people were being unreasonably cruel to those that defended the ending. Straight up bullying. It disgusted me to the point that I left Titanfolk and was able to calm down a bit.
Invaderzz' video popped up not long after in my feed and I pushed myself to watch it.
I have no idea how the hell it happened but that man somehow reset my brain. I was able to go back through the story and read it for what it was - what it was ACTUALLY trying to say. I shed most if not all of my preconceived notions about Eren's character and the over-importance I held for the pro-natalism aspect of the story and the missed opportunity of Ymir's rebirth. I came away loving the ending; it made so much more sense.
Eren wasn't some agonized man who had to defend his home at any cost. He was a boy caught up in his own selfish desires who used external factors to justify the fulfillment of them. He didn't really care about Paradis like he cared about seeing a flattened world. And I kind of think that goes for his friends.. albeit to a much lesser extent. They came second to that awful wish. A not very close second in my view.
Anyway. I really appreciate this video and how raw it is. You really did not hold back and even though there were a few points that I feel were a bit unreasonably harsh in the sense that I don't think a lot of the community INTENTIONALLY gaslit ourselves but more.. fell into a self-digging pit of conspiracy, you are talking about Yeagerbomb, Titanfolk, and ANRime.

As someone who hasn't caught up with the AoT anime yet but has seen the manga ending, I hated the manga ending because I think the genocide of millions of people and massive ecological devastation (the Rumbling) is bad and that Eren's psychotic genocidal plan was bad. Is that valid?
The only AOE that I wanted is for Eren's friends to actually call him out for being a genocidal maniac to his face, which they never really did in the manga. In the manga, I kind of got the lowkey feeling that his friends thought Eren Was Right/Had A Point, which I did not agree with. I didn't have a problem with Eren being a genocidal maniac; my main issue is that the other characters don't rightfully condemn and call out Eren for being a genocidal maniac.

The quick answer is that he's completely out-of-character and that the people who wrote the fanfiction completely misunderstood him and his intentions. They wrote the wrong idealization that they had of Eren: a sort of Lelouch-like super chad master-puppeteer character archetype, which is not what Eren is. Even when he influenced his father, it was all because he found himself in the perfect position to do it due to multiple conditions being true at the same time (and he had no influence on them).
The long answer is that Eren is simply a badly written ass**le.
He says he doesn't want to fight his best friend and he makes a sad face at the end of the second chapter. But at the same time not only he has already seen everything, but he has also already decided the path he considers the best to undertake. This is because they completely changed the structure of the timeline in their fanfiction.
The freedom to stop him he gives to his friends in chapter 134 therefore is bullshit, because Armin and the others in this fanfiction are doomed. They're gonna die and we all know that, because of the Akatsuki no Requiem theory. And this is something the Eren of the fanfiction himself has deliberately chosen. On the other hand, in the manga it's so clear that he wants to be stopped. Also, it is explicitly said that he has not seen everything when he kissed Historia's hand and he is not 100% sure that everyone will survive. He knows only that he will be stopped in the end.
If Eren really didn't want to be stopped, like the fanfiction says, and he really cared for his friends (and honestly I cannot believe that so many people completely forgot the sunset scene on the train in chapter 108!), he would not allow them to follow him and he would do something to block them on Paradis. But hey... he has already decided that they will die because he saw everything and he chose that specific path among the infinite ones of this new Doctor Strange timeline!
There is nothing that makes sense there LMAO

Both are pretty much identical except the anime adds new scenes.
Probably the biggest issue with the manga ending was the conversation between Armin and Eren which even fans of the ending like myself could admit was a bit rushed in execution and the anime greatly improved upon that part of the story.

AOE theorists and the Yeagerbomb fans are the reason Aot is a masterpiece of a story because it reflects the true reality of our world. Just like in the show where there were constant moral dilemmas and discussions and extermisms and radical ideas, that perfectly reflects the AOT fandom, we have the same problems just within the fandom that exists in the story. So as much as i don't like those guys, they prove that AOT ending is the only way it could have ended.

Been a fan of yours for years and love when you put on these intelligently-worded deep dives on AoT.
Thank you for this. For calling it what it is.
I stopped following the Titanfolk Reddit some chapters before 139 just because of how fascist it got.
I once did a series of polls in different AoT Reddits and it was intriguing, but sad because I remember there being so much support for Eren.
It’s incredibly distressing. People on the subreddit would go “it’s just a story, don’t make it political”,
    but of course
    for one it’s already political
and two, it is a fictional story, but it shows their real-world values in how they react to it.
It largely drove me away from the fandom, and I’m happy to see other fans here that aren’t fascist weirdos.
There was a meta-fictional component in that the division between people who supported Eren and people who held to their principles. Seeing people in the real world that were radicalized just like the Yeagerists was terrifying, but also important. The banality of evil. That radicalization, like how bigotry is laundered through “jokes”.
With other fandoms, I was reminded of the whole conspiracy Sherlock fans concocted after they were disappointed by Season 4. Also, Lord of the Rings, despite its messages of friendship and love, has fascist fans.
I felt Chapter 139 was hugely disappointing, but not for their reason. I think the series should have gotten rid of time travel. The Eldians losing their titan powers felt like a cop-out and had troubling implications for me.
I didn’t like the hopelessness inherent in supporting Eren’s plan (in addition to it just being evil). Attack on Titan is a story about overcoming the odds and causing change; this idea that it’s about succumbing to fate is a distortion, just like how their interpretation of the “children of the forest” is a distortion.
And while people can have interpretations, having such an interpretation that’s so counter to what the text is, is worth pointing out. I also think that some Eren fans just haven’t yet acquired the maturity to read these stories.

    • @awfulanime1301
      @awfulanime1301  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    • @Jonas-ob2sh
      @Jonas-ob2sh 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Eren succumbing to fate (that was partially created by his future self) is not distortion of the theme because he is the villain and the real heroes like Armin continue to fight against fate, the cruel world and impossible odds despite the world of AoT being pre-determined after Eren's death.
Also, Eldians being able to get rid of titan powers allowed them, Ymir and the rest of the world to be free, which is important thematic element, so I don't understand how it is troubling or a cop-out. (Especially when conflict continues despite titan powers not being part of the equation)

Lost girls OVA alternate reality is all in her head whereas the one in Special 2 is alternate reality created in paths by Eren, but it's still not new seperate timeline.
Lost girls OVA was meant to foreshadow Special 2 but both realities don't work the same way mechanically, they're thematic parallels.

@@awfulanime1301 Glad to hear it! Also something that you haven't said in the video but you might know already, there are A LOT of parallels between the freefolk treatment of the end of GoT and the titanfolk treatment of the end of SNK. Now the freefolk are very justified because the ending of GoT was objectively very bad, but it's clear that at least on some levels the titanfolkers want to emulate that behavior onto another series.
The very name is an obvious clue, but things like "Eren just forgot" perfectly mirror the comment by one of the writers of GoT who said "Daenerys kinda forgot". By drawing parallels they reinforce their own preconceptions (one series had a bad end, so another could also have one ergo that other series must have a bad one, it's sophistry but they don't care) and have preexisting examples for how to lash out at a bad story and use the same techniques against a good one.
That last point also relies a lot on the "on the spot" fallacy. They say tons of stupid things in very quick succession, and only a long format can adequately answer all of their false claims, something like your video. But on a forum like Reddit, it is impossible to do so, so short good-sounding ideas are what dominates, not the truth.
Recently I saw a post criticizing Mikasa for her treatment of Louise in the hospital, I answered not even defending her behavior but simply explaining the awful headspace she is in at that moment with all her allies leaving her in some way, Eren hurting her gravely, Armin having a mental breakdown right before, Floch establishing a dictatorship and executing an innocent right in front of her, Floch lying and telling her Levi and Hange were killed by Zeke... and I got downvoted for it. They don't want explanations, they hate them, they just want to circlejerk around objectively wrong or irrelevant points.

      2. While I do anthropomorphize these communities into singular belief systems, as I said, there are people who are in these communities for all kinds of different reasons, and between the two, the hope chads were way less far-right than the plot chads. Like, I do think you kind of got got by conspiratorial thinking, but it's not like I think you specifically are a bad person or a bigot.

I think the "I'm an idiot" scene is a bit overblown or misunderstood by most. It's the same basic idea when Eren fails to save Hannes and says that he is "Still useless as ever". It's just Eren saying this is the best he could come up with but he feels it isn't good enough. But neither Mikasa nor Armin agree with him in their respective scenes. Eren asks for feedback, if Armin thinks he is an idiot for doing this and Armin trusts him that he made the choice that made the most sense... TLDR: The scene is just Eren asking Armin if he thinks he is an idiot for doing all this. It's not Eren giving the audience a reason why he did what he did. It was really weird seeing people misunderstand it.
Edit: It's also fascinating that people think that Paradis/the Eldians would just live peacefully till the end of times if there was no outside world... without that remaining 20% that threatened their future they would have soon turned on each-other and Eren's plan of "a brief time of peace" for his friends would have been over...
