My 2019 CX-5 was totaled by an oncoming car on the highway in wrong lane...I woke up smothered in air bags with a cut on my head. 65 mph on auto cruise control. I walked away. The other driver did not. So I wasted no time getting a 2021 CX-5 AWD with the GT premium package, with no discounts but they threw in navigation; I like the Mazda infotainment & navigation w/ADD unlike many other reviewers.
I would have the CX-30 AWD Turbo PP if I was 20 years younger. The CX-5 is perfect for my 55 year old aching back. A tip for fuel mileage on any vehicle from Mazda with the 2.5L NA engine. I use full synthetic oil - Valvoline - and in about 80% interstate travel - my mpg has increased from about 31 mpg to 38 mpg! I use the radar cruise control and find a truck to follow while driving at 70 mph...I just can't believe the mileage difference. Also, trip computer is right at .5 mpg too high versus actual measurements, which is very good imho.
Sad to see prices soaring while content has been removed. I feel lucky to have my 2021 w/nav & GT premium package...perhaps the best version of this vehicle ever (I love the LED fog lights). It's safe, has everything I could ever want, gets great mileage, and will last forever. I fell in love with Mazda in 2008 when I got a Mazda3 GT with a manual transmission. Bought another for my daughter, then a '16 Mazda6, a '19 CX-5, and now my '21 CX-5. Tires and oil changes only for 15 years now, which has always amazed me.
Sad to say but it's like the "secret is out" due to #1 CR reliability ranking and massive praise from the automotive press. The days of getting a "deal" are long gone it seems, and now Mazda is headed towards being the BMW of Japan. It's funny: I have always thought of Mazda that way, but without the pricing.

Just experienced both at a dealership and have to say two imp things that are different - cx5 definitely more roomier in every aspect- front max height should be 5 ft 10, second row cramped in cx30 and definitely less boot space too. Cx30 is def sportier and more compact and so if you have a tight garage space cx30 would be better. Getting in and out feels the same with right seat adjustment in cx30.

  • @NickleForYourThoughts

I had the cx30, just turned it in for another cx5, nothing beats the cx5 in my opinion, espically if you want more space, if you want a more sporty drive then you get the cx30.

I'm confused as to why you find the CX-5 more "sporty?" It's the same drivetrain and the CX-30 is on a newer platform and weighs less. I drove both before buying and found the 30 a bit more fun to drive. Not as much fun as the 3 but better than the 5.

This is very interesting to read. I struggled when I leased my 2nd new Mazda CX-5 in June. I sure did like the CX-30 with AWD and turbo. It put a smile on my face. But I knew it would be too small and the shape is not 100 appreciated by me yet. I am sure happy that I picked up the CX-5 because I moved out of state and was hauling lots of things and still do. It swallows everything I need it to with the rear seat dropped down. It’s really not too big and not too small, so the CX-5 is a great primary car. If I wanted 2 Mazdas then I’d get a CX-30 too possibly.

Good review, though I wish more channels would review base engines instead of always picking "turbo premium plus super duper top prestige" trims. I watched a video and still don't know how base engines compare, and I don't think I can afford top trim.

I love! Love! The cx30 and its looks i got one, but once the lease is up def I'm jumping into a CX5 CE. It comes down to seating position and adjustability. the cx30 seating position pushes my thighs up and no matter how much i try the seat doesn't go down enough, whereas the cx5 does have the adequate seating adjustments. I'm 6'1 maybe it is a height inconvenience. Great vehicles tho'.

It looks like the CX-5 is a few inches taller than the CX-30. I'm guessing the entry/exit might be easier on it? I'm 6'3" and am looking for something easier on my lower back than my current Subaru Legacy sedan. Seems like I strain it about twice a year and this last time I couldn't get in and out of my car for three days. That's what pushed me to shop for a compact SUV.

Another great comparison video by Jonathon. Both of the vehicles you've compared are quality cars. When I went to the Mazda dealership of Tustin (Calif) a few months ago, I was choosing between these two. My decision to go with the CX5 was mainly for the extra interior room and the ease of getting in and out of the vehicle. My prior car was a low seating Acura which I had to 'plop' into. With my new CX5, I just slide into it quite easily. The CX30 seems to sit a little lower. I'm glad I went with the CX5, but I'm sure there are many happy CX30 owners also. Interesting how my 2022 CX5 with preferred package and (white) parchment interior came with a BLACK center console armrest, but the one you showed (Premium package) has a white armrest. I like my black armrest better. It contrasts nicely with the white seats and will be less likely to show marks/stains.
